A celebration of womanhood in our community! WELCOME TO THE LADIES ISSUE OF RED ROCK LIFESTYLE. May is the month we celebrate women! It is through their caring and nurturing example that our community can be strengthened. My mom and my niece, both pictured here, are amazing examples of women I admire. Anyone who knows Ruth and Leslie has been touched in the most positive ways. This photo was taken of them together in my brother’s backyard last September. This was not the original date or venue booked for Leslie's wedding. But like so many other events in 2020, COVID-19 created reason for change. Leslie’s advice printed on a

Dignity partnered with three organizations — all led by women — for an event at Honey Salt restaurant to empower girls through community service. Representatives from the Girl Scouts, Junior League, and Girlfriend Time gathered to assemble and deliver meals to the doorsteps of families who cannot safely leave their homes for food due to the COVID-19 crisis. More than 700 boxes of Girl Scout cookies were purchased and donated from the local community before being loaded into meal bags by the volunteers. deliveringwithdignitylv.org

OTHER MAMA IS
LOOKING OUT FOR MAMAS MOTHER'S DAY SELECTIONS FOR EVERYONE
“WOULD YOU SERVE THAT TO YOUR MOM?” I’ve found this question to be the best way to completely crush a line cook’s soul when they put up a dish that is not up to the restaurant’s standards. Instead of yelling, I lay a heavy guilt trip with a connected feeling that we all have; that we all owe our mothers the highest level of respect and attention to detail. I try to think of every customer as someone’s family member and it helps me to stay grounded in what we really are here to do in hospitality. Having a mother who was raised in New York, and a father with deep Oklahoma roots, I grew up with a very broad understanding of what people eat and how they like to dine. Bagels and lox with Mom, and fried okra with Dad. I love it all. When I moved to Las Vegas, I immediately knew I didn’t want to work in a hotel, but instead I wanted to know my customers; locals drive me to do what I do. When I created my “Other Mama” restaurant, I wanted a place with no cultural boundaries, so that everyone could come in with an open mind and experience the best we can offer adapted to different tastes. “But Uncle Jimmy doesn’t eat sushi.” Yes, we have some sushi - the best from my time training in Japan - but we are not a sushi bar. Just show Uncle Jimmy the menu and he’ll see things like grilled Heritage pork with a spicy glaze, prime NY steak with hollandaise and fresh waffle fries, and responsibly-sourced seafood. We have vegan menu items for the large increase in Las Vegas’ vegan community and we always buy local when possible. Everything from the oils to the salts, I ask if this is what I would serve to a loved one.

CULINARY CREATIONS (CONTINUED)
There’s a lot of responsibility being the family member that makes the reservation for Mother’s Day, it’s our goal to make you look good on your choice. I always dread it when I have to pick dinner for a group. Everyone says they don’t care where, but then they all have an opinion if it wasn’t for them. This is when I usually start getting cranky and need a drink. With more than 10 seasonal cocktails to choose from, you can take that edge off of spending time with some family members that you don’t see very often. We’ve recently acquired the largest selection of Japanese sake on this side of town and with our in-house sake sommelier, we can guide you on a journey through them. Such as our Beatrice cocktail, which is a perfect May drink because of the smell of fresh lemon and chamomile paired with Japanese Shochu, a special distilled beverage made of rice and barely. Our open kitchen and intimate dining room aspires to create direct relationships with our customers, to constantly be improving what we offer. Relationships are an important part of our business. “Other Mama” is named after my great grandmother who helped raise my dad and his siblings. This has been something that we learn in life, that a mother’s love doesn’t always come directly from your mother. It’s a certain kind of person, someone who loves, cares, and does everything she can to set you up for success in life. It’s our job to repay that by working hard and being the best version of ourselves. My career is my life and I’m honored to show all moms respect through my outlet, Other Mama. Thanks, Mom, love you.

Showroom Consultant and Product Expert Paige Snodgrass shared why we lean toward trends. “Think about when you turn on the radio and hear a song from when you were a teen. Memories come flooding back and it’s like you are experiencing them again. Or when we turn on a type of music so we can feel a certain way. It’s the same in design selection. They may not know how to describe the feeling in words, but homeowners want products that recreate a feeling. We look to trends for inspiration. Trends give words to those feelings.”

Subaru of Las Vegas honor America’s heroes, both past and present, who give their lives to defend our freedom. The United States remains “the land of the free and the home of the brave” because of their selfless service and sacrifice. This month, we pay special tribute to their valor and honor their memory. One could easily assume that Subaru of Las Vegas is just another car dealership, but doing so would be a big mistake. What distinguishes Subaru from every other automotive brand is the Subaru Love Promise. These guiding principles are the platforms for engaging with our local community, and the pillars that define our unique culture. At Subaru of Las Vegas, it is our mission to continue to make positive changes in the community and to spread love as far as possible. This month, Subaru of Las Vegas is activating the Subaru Loves to Help stewardship pledge with donations to the United Service Organizations (USO). The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country,
throughout their service to the nation. USO Nevada provides a home away from home and a sense of community for the 32,245 active duty troops, 4,760 National Guard personnel, Reservist, and their families based in Southern Nevada. They offer moraleboosting and family-strengthening programs, deployment and re-deployment support to help our troops adjust to the duty ahead, resiliency training, discreet and compassionate support for Families of the Fallen, as well as passenger terminal assistance for troops and loved ones alike. Since 2010, USO Nevada has served more than 155,000 troops and their families. Though the USO is not part of the federal government, the Las Vegas community has been vital in helping the USO Nevada fulfill their mission. The USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish their mission of connection. This May, in celebration of National Military Appreciation Month, Subaru of Las Vegas and its customers are declaring their support to those who serve through donations. Starting May

HOW WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS ARE CHANGING WORKPLACE DYNAMICS THROUGH LEADERSHIP
SHANE YOUNG More than any other time in history, women are taking over. Female business owners are fearlessly running their own companies, some for decades, some newly taking the plunge. As the economy of Southern Nevada continues to diversify, we are seeing more “boss ladies” in a variety of industries, each making their mark and breaking stereotypes of what leadership used to look like. “I’m authentic, relations-based, and lead by example. I get in the trenches and expect the same from each of my team members,” said Shane Young, founder, owner and attorney and counselor at law at Young Law Group. Young launched her Las Vegas-based firm in 2017 after practicing law for more than a decade. Young said it’s the women in her family, including her two grandmothers who each raised eight children while running their own small businesses, who continue to be her role models today. “We are a family business, and my family is what motivates me every day,” said Young. “I want to make sure that all of my employees enjoy the time they have with their loved ones and work in a way that is efficient, effective, and produces the highest results and service to our community.”

FEARLESS FEMALES
K I M B E R LY M I L E S Kimberly Miles, founder and president of TPC Payroll/HR Consultants, Nevada’s largest privately held national payroll and human resources management firm is celebrating its 20th anniversary and Miles credits her employees for her firm’s success. “I count myself fortunate to work with a great team; because they go above and beyond for our clients, we continue to flourish.” But it is the Miles-led values system at TPC that provides the foundation for prosperity. “It is because of our commitment to our values, such as ‘our people make the difference,’ that we’ve been so successful. I started this company to create a safe place for all our teammates to reach their highest financial potential while never experiencing the glass ceiling. We have a family-like culture with fair pay and benefits to compete with larger corporations. I believe that to create a better world, the number one investment is to help humans. It is our social responsibility to give a hand up, to keep money in circulation locally, and to create better communities within our own economy. When we empower one another the true nature of our being shines. I found very early on that when the females rule the finances, they nurture the process the same way they do their own children. In turn, money experiences growth.”

SHANNA KEHOE Some female leaders embrace the “boss” role quite easily, but for others it takes a little getting used to. “I don’t love being a boss. I think you have to almost prove to yourself that you are capable of that role,” said Shanna Kehoe, a wealth advisor and managing partner of Diamond Wealth Management. A University of Nevada Las Vegas graduate and a Las Vegas native, Kehoe says what she appreciates about her career is her ability to do what she loves while also raising her 10-year-old twins. She says being a woman, a wife, and mother all helped her to become the leader she is today. “I think as women, we tend to listen a little more,” said Kehoe, whose business has a strong focus on providing financial advice to women. “We listen to people versus speaking over them. We notice things and we really take the time to understand their needs.”

KARI COMROV Finding work/life balance is also an essential part of the business plan for Kari Comrov, president of TruFusion and founder and owner of a brand-new tanning spa concept called Summer House. “True leadership is rooted in responsibility and accountability,” said Comrov. “My most important responsibility is to grow my team professionally, and through that hopefully personally as well.” Comrov said it’s through her experience becoming pregnant right after she was promoted to chief operating officer at her former company, that she saw the kind of pressure women can put themselves through to “do it all.” “I was so nervous that people would think I would not be able to keep up because I was pregnant. So, I worked until the minute I was in labor and then after giving birth to my daughter, I went back two weeks later. Now, looking back, I can see that all the concerns and worries were self-inflicted.” Today, whenever one of Comrov’s employees is expecting, she assures them they are supported, and they should enjoy this special time knowing their job isn’t in jeopardy. “It has always been important for me to set an example for my female counterparts and explain my story to them so they too can achieve whatever their goals may be,” said Comrov.

T O N YA G A L E Business owner Tonya Gale, who founded Epic Association Management in Las Vegas in 2014, said her success in management is rooted in empathy which is a key trait for any leader, man, or woman, especially in her industry. “Our company manages homeowner associations across Southern Nevada which includes some 7,300 homeowners,” said Gale. “Honestly, it’s a pretty thankless industry. You don’t often hear from people who are happy. You hear all the negative comments.” Because of this, Gale is focused on making sure her staff receives constant support, starting with their work schedule. Gale tries to end the workweek at noon on Fridays and offers rotating Fridays off to employees who have been at the company for some time. “This is my way of giving back and thanking them for what they do day in and day out,” said Gale. “It allows them to have a life. We are a family in this office, and we love working with each other.”

HOW LOCAL CORPORATE, WEDDING, AND PRIVATE EVENT PLANNERS ARE REINVENTING HOW LAS VEGANS CELEBRATE
PLANS HAVE CHANGED QUICKLY IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE SINCE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BEGAN. The multi-billion dollar event planning industry, made up of small businesses including florists, caterers, musicians, photographers, bartenders and wedding and corporate event planners has been particularly hard hit with the majority of events postponed or cancelled in 2020. Her company quickly pivoted its website to

really control those aspects of a virtual event and those things all affect how audiences experience the content,” said Gilday-Shaffer. The JGS Group

had years of experience producing videos for their clients, but they had to adapt that expertise to a remote environment. Additionally, they had challenges with educating customers about the expense of a virtual event. “We are so used to consuming extremely high-quality content on our televisions, phones and computers. Many people forget how costly it is to produce that type of content which includes streamlined graphics, seamless transitions, a high production value and a lot of planning,” she added. Despite all of the changes, Gilday-Shaffer believes that many aspects of our new virtual communications will remain long after the pandemic subsides. “As much as we talk about Zoom fatigue, it has allowed us to be more efficient with our time,” she said.

Instead of driving across town for meetings, many of her clients now are open to teleconferencing. “Now you can have a hybrid of individuals at an event, some live and some virtual,” she added. This is appealing to those who still don’t feel safe, can’t travel, and those abroad who are limited by travel or financial restrictions. Another added plus with virtual events is that watching content on a laptop, television, computer, or phone is up close and personal. “While with virtual we have the barrier of a screen, we also can utilize interactive developments like chat and Q&A that allow the audience to participate with presenters. Because the hosts and speakers are literally full face on each attendee’s screen there is a new kind of intimacy with streaming events,” said Gilday-Shaffer. Her nonprofit clients can now expand well

don’t hold a liquor license and it becomes more affordable because clients can keep what they don’t drink.” Clients can purchase the liquor they need and the staff picks it up and brings it to the location of the event. Clients have the option of bringing the Wandering Box Bar trailer into an inside event, using it for an outdoor bar at private homes or taking it to beautiful locations such as the Valley of Fire or dry lake beds. The trailer is tailored in theme and decorations for each individual event. “We work with each client to incorporate their theme, from BoHo to elegant, incorporating specialty cocktails, signage and photo options to make each event unique and personal,” said Eldridge. Another local event company has seen changes too. McKenzie, office manager at Lakeside Weddings, saw her business drop last year from approximately 35 ceremonies per month down to five or six. “Now we see more micro-weddings with under 50 guests,” she said. “Big weddings are not gone, especially as we move to a less restrictive environment. We still are seeing a mix of small, large, and in-between groups, but also there is a huge increase in weddings that are just involving the couple.” A wedding is much more financially feasible if it is on a smaller scale with less pressure when planning a more intimate ceremony involving close family members and friends. And Lakeside Brides’ Dannielle Novak is able to help brides get the look they desire for the special day with salon service. With 30 years of experience, Dannielle is a licensed professional who is a stickler for PPE protocols. “We are about safety, sanitation, and technique,” said Dannielle. “We have the passion and talent to do it right for the bride and the bridal party.” Lakeside Event Center will be opening its highly anticipated Vino Las Vegas Wine Club this spring. The Club will offer wine events, education, and wine cruises on Lake Jacqueline, all convenient to make the couple’s special day all that more special and to provide diverse options in the current climate. For all three companies, one element remains constant - businesses need to be flexible and adaptive to succeed in the COVID era and beyond.

Girl Dad For STEM HOW ONE FAMILY IS CHANGING THE FACE OF THEIR INDUSTRY IN NEVADA
AT AGE 11 TRENT KEENAN KNEW HE WOULD BUILD A LAND SURVEYING COMPANY. After he moved to Las Vegas in 1987, he saw a couple of surveyors walk to the center of an intersection and was fascinated. He explained the experience by quoting an industry saying, “the profession finds you.” The profession also found Trent’s daughter, Heather, 19, when she was in fifth grade. She is currently attending Great Basin College in order to take over the family business, Diamondback Land Surveying. Both father and daughter are doing their part to pave the way for future females in the industry. Only 2 percent of surveyors in Nevada are women and women are only 29 percent of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workforce in the United States. Heather’s interest for surveying was developed by her own early desire to plan her future, and further encouraged by West Career & Technology Academy’s project to engage and prepare students in college during their freshman year. She decided on Oregon Institute of Technology and transferred to Great Basin College in March of 2020. She will graduate in 2024. Heather isn’t as much interested in the idea of taking over her dad’s business, but more so proving that CONTINUED >

women can do the same things men can do, “When someone gives me a hard time about my profession, I just shrug it off and think to myself, ‘You’ll work for me one day.’” Her confidence is breathtaking when the stats veer the other way. A report from Ypulse Research Group and the authors of The Confidence Code for Girls found that today’s girls often experience low levels of confidence. Between ages 8 and 14, girls’ confidence levels drop by 30 percent. During their tween and teen years, girls’ confidence that other people like them falls from 71 percent to 38 percent — a 46 percent drop. Between ages 12 and 13, the percentage of girls who say they’re not allowed to fail increases by 150 percent. Ypulse also reports that while young girls and boys are equally likely to believe they will succeed in a STEM career, when girls enter their teen years, their confidence often stagnates, and they begin to doubt their abilities. The Keenans believe the way forward is investment in STEM education through local technical high schools and to be involved in STEM programming with the Girl Scouts. Girls need access to early STEM experiences and the opportunity to learn from inspiring women role models. Seeing the process of designing, building, testing, failing, and retesting early on will allow young women to understand that failure is okay as they build confidence in their capabilities and advocate for themselves in male-dominated fields. The Keenans are putting their money where their mouths are and continue to support Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada. They have provided pro bono work for both Camp Foxtrail and the new Frias Frontier, previously named Cowboy’s Dream, and gifted by the Charles and Phyllis M. Frias Charitable Trust, of which Trent expressed, “the property is beautiful, and the possibilities are endless.” When pressed as to his why, he simply said, “I want to promote girls in STEM and provide a platform for women and girls in this profession.” 38
