He shares a fabulous recipe for a spicy and spiked hot cocoa. Kevin Kraft and his amazing local event design company, By Dzign shares their ability to bring holiday magic to life. CANYON GATE RESIDENT KARAN FEDER’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIRST TOURING BARBIE DOLL EXHIBITION

THE FIRST BARBIE DOLL EXHIBITION TO TOUR IN THE UNITED STATES IS CREATING NOSTALGIA ACROSS THE VALLEY. The exhibit was masterminded and built by Illusions Projects in partnership with Mattel and brought in part by Canyon Gate resident Karan Feder. Karan, a costume historian, was instrumental in bringing Barbie®, A Cultural Icon: 60 Years of Fashion and Inspiration to the Las Vegas Strip, inside The Shops at Crystals. The exhibit celebrates 60 years of Barbie fashion and culture. You don’t have to be a Barbie collector or a fashionista to appreciate the historical significance of Barbie in the American experience. This museum-level exhibition explores the story of fashion from 1959 to 2019 as told through the iconic 11.5” doll. Karan, owner of Entertainment Exhibitions, is considered the local authority in the preservation of Las Vegas entertainment costumes and costume history. She turned her passion for fashion into an extensive and varied career as a Hollywood costume designer, fashion collector, costume historian, exhibit curator, and author. From her start at the University of Wisconsin Madison’s Historical Society to her time as a volunteer at the Liberace Museum and her more recent costume preservation and exhibit projects with the Nevada State Museum Las Vegas, fashion has always been the common thread in the tapestry of Karan’s professional life.

Karan spearheaded and curated the priceless “Les Folies Bergère: Entertaining Las Vegas One Rhinestone at a Time” exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. The state museum’s Folies Bergère archive consists of 8,000 vintage costumes spanning the show’s 50-year run at the Tropicana. The archive is recognized as one of the most significant museum collections of cabaret costumes in the world. It made Karan a showgirl expert, but it was fellow museum volunteer, David Porcello, who turned Karan into a Barbie connoisseur. Porcello, an avid Barbie enthusiast had been acquiring and perfecting his vast collection since childhood with a goal to own all fashion released by Mattel from the very first Barbie in 1959 through the early 1980s. The pandemic afforded Karan the time necessary to explore the concept of a fashion exhibition using Porcello’s Barbies. Entertainment Exhibitions partnered with local Illusion Projects, whom Karan refers to as “the backbone” of the exhibit since they expressed interest in developing a new touring exhibition program, and Karan was poised to not only deliver the more than 250 artifacts but also provide the expertise to interpret the material. Karan defines the project as “primarily a fashion exhibition, that walks us through six decades of Barbie fashion, displayed in parallel with cultural events of the time.” She expounds by using Jacqueline Kennedy as an example. Her fashion style was replicated by Barbie designers in the early 1960s and the exhibit used multiple historical records, Vogue covers, newspaper clippings, and high-fashion runway offerings to present the parallels between the real historical

18

figures that inspired the Barbie fashion designers and the significance of their choices, all from a historical and cultural perspective. Karan describes the exhibit as different because she chose to explore the reasons behind the fashion trends that were produced by Mattel, as well as those that were omitted—like the lack of punk clothing in the late 70s and 80s. Plus she included surprising elements, like life-sized examples of the Barbie fashion that help us better appreciate the mastery employed when adapting and scaling down the outfits. She also strove to be inclusive by highlighting important moments in fashion and Mattel history, like her conversation with Kitty Black Perkins, the designer of the first African American Barbie in 1980. Karan affirms that she did her best not to re-write history, but instead to encourage Mattel to embrace their past, the company’s evolution, and, of course, their place in fashion history.

WHAT IS THE BEST HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING DÉCOR ITEM THAT WILL BE A SHOWSTOPPER? A great focal point: the tree, a fireplace or hearth, the front door or entryway, or perhaps a stunning staircase. Decide what your focal point is, and that is your showstopper. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD? For me, when I walk into a home and see personal design choices, I beam knowing what went into the choices and love to question them as everyone has a story behind their choice. There are so many styles out there, and personality makes them unique, so remember that whatever you design or place in your home should be something that brings joy, makes your home cheery, and has that personal added style. Whether grand or lowkey, the placement of décor is key so that everyone who enters your home can experience the design and gain the same excitement as you do for the holiday season. Designer tip: command strips, command hooks, and assorted zip ties are very helpful. Plan ahead and enjoy! CityLifestyle.com/RedRock

HOW DR. CHRISTINA VELA, ANDY BISCHEL, AND LISA HABIGHORT ARE HELPING LOCAL AT-PROMISE YOUTH THIS HOLIDAY SEASON AND BEYOND

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS SYNONYMOUS WITH SMILING FACES OF CHILDREN. The reality is that some children need more cheering up than others. In fact, the Children’s Advocacy Alliance gave Nevada an overall “D” grade in the the most comprehensive annual reports on child wellbeing. But local charitable organizations are

Our work is focused on three core areas: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Character & Leadership—because these are the tools EVERY kid, regardless of household or socio-economic status, needs to have a joyful, happy, and productive life.” Primarily serving elementary school-aged children living in low-income communities across the state, Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing childhood literacy by changing lives one book at a time. Co-Founder & CEO Lisa Habighorst declared, “Our largest area of concentration is in Clark County, where we serve children in 62 Title 1 elementary schools. We also serve three elementary schools in Washoe County, and we deliver books throughout Nevada’s rural communities.”

DISCOVERING THE TRUE NEEDS OF YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY Andy Bischel sees an “urgent need for mental health services in our community. This is especially true for youth, as the adolescent years provide a critical window in which strong mental health can be promoted, problems can be addressed, and good habits can be developed. As we work to understand and recover from the long-term effects of COVID, this issue has never been more important. Boys & Girls Clubs are working diligently to help address this deficit with new mental health and counseling services in our Clubs.” Spread the Word Nevada gives the gift of books all year-round. All three children’s charities work year-round to collect donations to support their various programs and services to help the youth in our community. In addition to donations, you can also volunteer at several fun holiday events. SPECIAL HOLIDAY EVENTS Spread the Word Nevada and St. Jude’s Ranch for Children are hosting holiday events to support Nevada’s youth. According to Dr. Vela, these holiday events have a deeper meaning for at-promise youth, “Receiving support from our community ensures we can provide children and youth with the very best holiday experience to create happy memories and reinforces to the children that they are not alone.” December 4 & 5, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Badges and Bows Toy Drive The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Nevada Department of Corrections, in support of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, will host this toy drive at Walmart on 8060 West Tropical Parkway. December 11, 7:00 - 9:00 PM Angel Tree Toy Drive Spread the Word Nevada will partner with the CASA Foundation of Las Vegas for their annual Angel Tree event to provide brand-new books for children under 18. Night of Lights St. Jude’s Ranch for Children will hold its 15th Annual “Night of Lights” festival to bring the holiday spirit to youth living in foster care. The community is invited to enjoy the festivities, visit Santa, make-yourown s’mores, eat, sing, and be merry. December 18 Gift of Giving The annual event brings together brothers and sisters separated in foster care. Siblings pick out a gift for each other, wrap it, and then get to see each other open it. They enjoy a holiday meal and fun activities. For most, this will be the only time they get to see each other over the holidays.

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

Anna Sarol

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
