A Year of Progress, Not Pressure Happy New Year, Ramapo Valley! This time of year always makes me pause and take stock of where I am and what I want for the months ahead. For a lot of people, that means resolutions. For me?

HOW HILARY RUSSO HELPS OTHERS HEAL FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Hilary Russo’s career began under bright studio lights. As a television news anchor and reporter, she once envisioned herself climbing the ranks to a national broadcast desk. But in the years following 9/11, her reporting on tragedy and loss began to take a personal toll.

“I didn’t even realize the level of dysregulation I was experiencing,” Russo says. “I was taking the burnout and stress of work home with me.”

That awareness marked the start of a transformation that would take her far beyond newsrooms—into the heart of trauma-informed holistic wellness. Today, Russo is the founder of HIListically Speaking®, LLC, a nationally recognized media and wellness brand dedicated to helping people turn trauma into triumph through neuroscience-based tools and storytelling.

After years in journalism and acting, Russo’s transition to wellness began while working on Daily Burn 365, a live-streamed fitness show based in New York City.

TRANSFORMING TRAUMA INTO TRIUMPH

“When I was a reporter, I held space for people to share their stories with the world,” she explains. “Now, I hold space for people to share their stories with themselves. In one, you broadcast out; in the other, you broadcast in.”

Her belief in narrative transformation inspired her trademarked HUG It Out® Method, which weaves humor, understanding, and gratitude into everyday life.

“The ‘H’ is humor—finding moments to laugh, even when things don’t go your way,” she says. “The ‘U’ is understanding—knowing who you are and how you show up in the world. And the ‘G’ is gratitude—not just for things outside yourself, but for who you are.”

Russo is currently writing a book based on the method, which recently earned an honorable mention from Hay House Publishing. “If you can’t have me personally,” she says, “you can still have the HUG It Out way in your pocket.”

LEADING A NEW KIND OF WELLNESS MOVEMENT

“It was the first time I ever learned what a health coach was,” she says. “We all had health coaches, and it really inspired me. I wanted to help others live better—and I wanted to live better myself.”

Her curiosity led her to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the largest health coaching school in the world, where she earned her certification. She later became a faculty host for the program’s educational series, combining her broadcast expertise with her passion for wellness.

But Russo’s journey didn’t stop there. At a networking event, she was introduced to Havening, a neuroscience-based technique that uses touch and pleasant distractions to rewire the brain, regulate stress, and build resilience.

“Someone offered to try it on me at a bar,” she laughs. “I didn’t know what she did to me, but I wanted more of it.”

That encounter deeply changed her path. Russo became a certified Havening Techniques® practitioner—and later, a trainer who now teaches doctors, therapists, and first responders around the world.

In addition to private practice, Russo’s work spans multiple platforms. She hosts HIListically Speaking, a globally ranked podcast in the top 1.5% worldwide. She’s also a seasoned media professional, having worked for outlets such as QVC, CVS, and Aetna, where she co-hosted the Healthy Communities travel series highlighting wellness initiatives in underserved areas.

Her work today centers on corporate wellness, speaking engagements, and trainings that bring emotional intelligence and resilience into workplaces.

“We live in a sick-care system,” she says. “If we aren’t asking questions about our own health and well-being, we’re putting control in someone else’s hands.”

Her second signature program, The Pioneer Practitioner™, encourages people to advocate for themselves.

“Being a pioneer practitioner means you have the right to ask questions, to learn more, to take ownership of your journey,” she says. “You don’t have to have all the answers—you just have to be willing to explore.”

“More than anything, I want to help people be kind to their minds,” she says. “That means teaching tools that are accessible and actionable. Whether it’s through a podcast episode, a corporate workshop, or a one-on-one session, my goal is to remind people that resilience and emotional well-being are basic human rights.”

Even as her brand expands, Russo stays grounded in the values that guided her from day one.

“At the end of the day, the real currency isn’t cash,” she says.

“It’s time well spent with people you love. It’s living the HUG It Out way—finding humor, understanding, and gratitude in every part of your story.”

Cold and flu season hits hard in Bergen County, where school drop-offs, packed grocery stores and chilly commutes make it all too easy for sniffles to spread. But staying healthy doesn’t always start at the pharmacy — often, it begins right in your own kitchen.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches that everyday ingredients have medicinal properties. These foods carry warming, cleansing or restorative qualities that support the body through winter. You may already have these wellness staples in your Bergen County pantry.

WARMING HERBS: GINGER, CINNAMON, PEPPER, TURMERIC

The body’s digestive system thrives on warmth. Ginger is commonly prescribed in TCM for stomach issues, inflammation, arthritis, food sensitivities and respiratory viruses. It can be sliced, grated or powdered and added to soups, vegetables or baked fruit.

Other warming herbs—such as cinnamon, black pepper and turmeric—help the body maintain balance during the cold months.

Tangerine Peel

Baked Apples INGREDIENTS • • • • •

4 apples, cored 1/4 cup goji berries or raisins 2 Tbsp honey or brown sugar 3/4 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp grated fresh ginger

DIRECTIONS Place apples in a baking dish with 1/2 cup water. Fill cores with remaining ingredients. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

TCM Tip: Fill a cotton sock with dried ginger, peppercorns, cinnamon, sea salt and cloves. Warm it in the microwave for 15 seconds and use it as a heat pack for stomach aches or areas of discomfort.

ALLIUMS: ONIONS, GARLIC, SHALLOTS, LEEKS

Alliums are rich in sulfur, which gives them their familiar aroma and contributes to detoxification. Using onions to absorb viruses and bacteria dates back to the early 1900s, when white onions were kept bedside to ward off illness.

In TCM, white onions are often prescribed to move cold and phlegm out of the body.

Lentils With Fried Onions INGREDIENTS • • • • •

1 cup French lentils, rinsed 1/4 cup rice, rinsed 1 tsp salt 2 onions, thinly sliced 3 Tbsp cooking oil

DIRECTIONS Bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add lentils, rice and salt; reduce to a simmer and loosely cover for 20 minutes.

In a frying pan, heat oil over medium heat and cook onions until golden. Spoon lentils onto a plate and top with fried onions.

TCM Tip: For congestion, place a cut white onion on the bottom arch of each foot and secure with socks. This activates the Kidney meridian and helps draw impurities from the body.

TANGERINE PEEL

Tangerines, available from October through January, are a winter wellness staple. TCM practitioners often

recommend tangerine peel to reduce phlegm, ease coughs and relieve congestion. The peel also aids digestion, reduces bloating and helps with nausea.

Save your peels to make a simple tea. Tangerine peel can also be dried, ground and mixed with honey. Always use organic tangerines to avoid pesticides—especially important when shopping local farmers’ markets or Bergen County grocers.

Tangerine Peel Tea INGREDIENTS • • • • •

Peels from 2 tangerines 4 scallions, roughly chopped 2-inch piece fresh ginger Handful of almonds Brown sugar or honey, to taste

DIRECTIONS Smash ginger to release its juices. Add all ingredients to a pot of water and bring to a boil. Boil 2–4 minutes. Sweeten and drink hot.

TCM Tip: For a cold, take a hot bath or shower, drink tangerine peel tea and wrap up to gently sweat out the illness. For a scratchy throat, add two peppermint tea bags while steeping.

When Linda Lemery lost her mother to cancer, her search for alternative therapy set her on a new path. She explored acupuncture, reiki, essential oils, chiropractic care and functional medicine—experiences that deepened her passion for natural wellness.

The science of infrared Infrared light—the invisible part of the sun’s spectrum—penetrates tissue to stimulate circulation, support detoxification and promote cellular repair, the studio says. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, infrared saunas warm the body directly, raising core temperature to produce a deep sweat. The studio says this approach may help slow signs of aging, decrease inflammation, support brain performance, aid pain relief and burn up to 400 calories per session.

Red-light therapy targets the mitochondria—the “battery packs” in each cell—to support cellular energy, according to the studio.

At just 15 years old, Emily and Katherine Cho are rewriting what it means to be young athletes in a fast-rising sport that’s sweeping the nation—pickleball. The Ridgewood-based twins, who started playing three years ago, have already won state and national titles, earned ambassador roles, and built a community that stretches far beyond the court. But for Emily and Katherine, it’s about much more than medals—it’s about connection, confidence and giving back.

FINDING THEIR GAME

Like many during the pandemic, the Chos were looking for something new to do when their tennis lessons came to a halt.

A family friend suggested pickleball and invited them to a clinic at Downtown Sports in Mahwah. At first, they were the only kids surrounded by adults. But with the encouragement of their first coach, Tina Marchie, they quickly fell in love with the game.

“She made us feel like we belonged,” Emily says. “We realized age doesn’t really matter in pickleball. Everyone’s welcome.”

As the girls progressed, they found strength not only from their coaches, but from a growing support system of mentors who treated them like family. Among them is Sarah Kim, who the girls lovingly call their “second mom” in all things pickleball. Whether cheering them on from the sidelines, helping them navigate tournament life, or stepping in when their mom wasn’t sure how to

handle a pickleball-specific moment, Sarah has become one of their biggest champions. It truly takes a village.

A SHARED PASSION—AND TWIN TELEPATHY

Emily describes herself as the quiet, focused twin; Katherine calls herself the loud and social one. Together, their contrasting personalities create a strong on-court partnership.

“We understand each other really well—like twin telepathy,” Katherine says with a laugh. “We know what the other one’s about to do.”

Their teamwork shows in their results. This year, Emily and Katherine competed at the 2025 Pickleball World Championships in Dallas, taking home gold in the 4.5 Women’s Doubles Champions Division Under 50 (ages 8–34)—the largest pickleball tournament in the world, featuring competitors from Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and more.

They also competed at the 2025 Minto U.S. Open Pickleball Championships, where they earned silver in Junior Girls Doubles.

(Katherine also brought home gold in Junior Mixed Doubles.)

As their competition level climbs, so does their commitment.

Pickleball is a year-round sport, and between tournaments the girls train up to five times a week while managing a full schedule of sophomore-year honors coursework.

“Sometimes it’s hard missing school or taking tests early,” Emily says. “But it’s worth it.”

A SPORT THAT BUILDS MORE THAN SKILL

Pickleball has helped the Chos grow not only as athletes, but as young women.

“I used to be really shy,” Emily shares. “Playing with adults helped me come out of my shell. The community made me feel confident.”

Katherine agrees. “The community at The Pickler feels like family,” she says. “Everyone supports each other.”

Giving Back Through the Game Earlier this year, the sisters helped co-host and work at the Dink for a Difference charity event after learning about it from friend and organizer Paula Southren. Proceeds supported Comfort Cases, a nonprofit founded by Rob Scheer that provides essential items to children entering foster care.

“When Rob gave his speech, I cried,” Katherine recalls. “It really inspired us.”

The girls are now working to start a Comfort Cases club at their high school. They also volunteer by teaching developmentally challenged young adults how to play pickleball, including youth connected with Give Chances who expressed interest so they could eventually compete in the Special Olympics.

“It feels special to use something we love to help others,” Emily says.

Reinventing the Classic MEATLOAF ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

INGREDIENTS: • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 large onion, finely diced • 1/2 cup finely diced celery • 1 pound lean ground beef • 1 cup barbecue sauce • 1 cup well-drained diced tomatoes

• 1 cup finely diced jalapeño Jack cheese • 4 large eggs • 2 cups bread crumbs • Salt and pepper • 2 tubes thawed frozen croissant dough • 4 cups croutons • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Heat olive oil in a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Add garlic, onion and celery; sauté about 4 minutes, until softened but not browned. Set aside to cool.

2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, barbecue sauce, tomatoes, cheese, cooled vegetables and 3 eggs. Lightly mix with your fingers. Add bread crumbs, season with salt and pepper, and blend gently without breaking up the cheese.

4. Roll croissant dough into 2-inch balls. In a small bowl, whisk the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water.

5. Spray a nonstick bundt pan. Press croutons into the bottom in a tight, even layer. Spread meat mixture over croutons. Top with croissant balls, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with poppy seeds.

6. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 degrees. Rest 10 minutes, then invert onto a platter. Slice with a serrated knife.

Meatloaf, that fixture of home cooks’ repertoires, is not as American as you might think. Its origins as a way to use meat scraps date to Roman times, and today many cultures claim their own variations, including those throughout Western Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East. The common denominator is the same: ground meat mixed with binders and seasonings, baked or steamed and often shaped into a loaf.

Meatloaf’s popularity is rooted in its practicality as a protein stretcher, its simple preparation and its universally comforting nature. It’s also one of the great second-day dishes. A cold slice is a treasured treat—all it really needs is a swipe of mayo, though I’ve been known to add a dab of chutney.

And then there are meatloaf pancakes. Once your batter is bubbling on the griddle, place a slice of meatloaf in the center of each pancake, then flip.

The meat caramelizes on the bottom while the batter cooks around it, creating a perfect breakfast or brunch centerpiece.

Meatloaf is endlessly adaptable. While we tend to think of it as beef-based, it doesn’t have to be.

It can be made with almost any meat, organ meats included or omitted. The key is balancing the meat, liquid (milk or cheese), bread and eggs—essentially a meat custard that needs proper seasoning to reach its full potential.

I once developed a duck meatloaf with cornbread that was delicious, and I created what I called “Millionaire’s Meatloaf” for a menu, which included shrimp chili as well as beef. It was such a hit that The New York Times ran the recipe. I’m proud to say it has hundreds of five-star reviews, partly because the beef portion stands on its own as a memorably flavorful meatloaf.

You don’t have to go far outside the box to elevate the classic version. My meatloaf bundt cake (recipe below) does exactly that with the addition of a crouton base and croissant-dough topping. The bread absorbs the rendered fat, turning irresistibly crisp and savory—the bread might be the best part.

Visually, the meatloaf bundt cake is a showstopper, making it worthy of company.

A SUNDAY FILLED WITH PURPOSE

When people walked into Sportime Englewood on Sept. 14, the energy was instantly different—bright, buzzing and unexpectedly tender. More than 100 supporters arrived ready to play, cheer and connect, but beneath the fun was an undeniable sense of shared purpose.

The inaugural Dink for a Difference Pickleball Tournament, benefitting Comfort Cases, quickly became more than a friendly afternoon of matches. It transformed into a gathering where community and compassion intersected in the most genuine way.

Leading the charge on the courts were Katherine and Emily Cho, twin teenage

pickleball players who have been turning heads in competitive circles for the past two years. Though still in high school, they stepped into the role of junior ambassadors with maturity far beyond their years. They spent the afternoon cheering on players, offering tips between matches and rallying with adults who joked that returning even one of their shots felt like a personal victory.

By the time the final matches wrapped, more than $20,000 had been raised through sponsors and registrations. But ask anyone who was there, and they’ll tell you: the true impact wasn’t measured in dollars. It was measured in heart.

THE HEART OF THE DAY: WHEN ROB SPOKE

COMFORT WASN’T JUST THE MISSION— IT WAS THE MOOD

The most emotional moment didn’t happen on the court.

It came when Comfort Cases founder and CEO Rob Scheer stepped forward to speak. The crowd instinctively grew quiet as he shared his story.

Scheer entered foster care at age 12 and aged out at 18. He spent his high school years homeless. He remembers, vividly, being handed a trash bag to hold his belongings—a moment that stayed with him and ultimately led to the creation of Comfort Cases decades later.

He also spoke about his children, all adopted through foster care, with tenderness that moved the room. Though they live in Maryland and were not present at the tournament, Scheer described how each carries a story of resilience. As he spoke, attendees wiped tears, held hands and listened with the kind of attention only a story from the heart can command.

“Dink for a Difference was more than a tournament—it was a reminder of what happens when good humans come together with purpose,” Scheer said. “The energy on those courts, the conversations, the connections… It showed all of us that Bergen County is a community that truly shows up for its kids. We met incredible people who care deeply about making sure no child enters foster care with a trash bag, and I believe this is just the beginning. Thanks to everyone who picked up a paddle, we didn’t just raise funds—we built a movement. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish next together.”

It became the emotional core of the day—the moment everyone kept talking about long after the final match ended.

WHERE COMMUNITY AND COMPASSION MEET

Co-chairs Paula Southren and Aimee Berger brought the day to life with leadership, warmth and a clear vision. Their goal was simple: make philanthropy feel personal, joyful and human. And that’s exactly what happened.

Katherine and Emily Cho inspired players of all ages, while Scheer inspired everyone who listened. Businesses showed up in force, families and friends made memories, and most importantly, children in foster care will feel the ripple effect.

THE HEART OF THE AFTERNOON

Midway through the tournament, players stepped away from the courts and gathered around long tables stacked with blankets, pajamas, toiletries, books and stuffed animals. Within minutes, the atmosphere shifted from competitive to collective.

Side by side, strangers packed Comfort Cases for children entering foster care—backpacks filled with essentials that say, You matter. You’re cared for. You belong. It was philanthropy at its most tangible.

Let’s be real—every January, we make big promises to ourselves. Eat better. Move more. Spend less. Be more mindful. And by mid-February, most of those promises are… well, somewhere between “I’ll start tomorrow” and “Wait, what resolution?”

You’re not alone. Studies show about 80% of New Year’s resolutions fizzle out by February, and only 9% of people keep them all year long. But here’s the good news: It’s not about willpower—it’s about strategy. You don’t have to overhaul your life in one giant leap. You just have to make micro-moves that build real momentum.
