THE STY LE ISS UE

A Style All Your Own

Having a style is about displaying who you are and what is important to you. Your sense of style shows something of your individuality and character. A person can be as bold as a red scarf or as delicate as a pale pink rose tucked into a lapel. We are drawn to style, it gives us insights into how people choose to live and even inspires us to embrace our own style. This month's issue dives into the many ways we incorporate style and why it matters to us.

Creating a thoughtful space that brings about calm in your own backyard but also a gathering for family shows how style runs deeper than merely looks alone. Yet style can also refer to the manner in which you approach something. Why camp when you can 'glamp', for example? Providing some flair to the ordinary can redefine an experience. Style should, at times, be hands on and fun. Selecting colors and embellishments for a hat that really catches the eye is a clear statement.  Style shifts and comes in waves, heralding the seasons and the time for change. There are those who make it their life's work to style homes, both inside and out. Style can be both traditional as well as innovative, either way, we welcome the expression and marvel at how many different styles there are. As you turn each page of this issue, we hope you find inspiration and even the courage to display your own style.

Valley Fever is caused by a fungus that lives in the desert soil in the southwestern United States. Dogs can get valley fever lesions on the skin, in the bone, lungs, and even the brain. Like people, dogs are very susceptible to Valley Fever. Dogs primarily contract Valley Fever in the low desert regions of Arizona, New Mexico and southwestern Texas and the central deserts of California. Dogs accompanying people traveling through these areas or wintering in these warm climates have about the same chance as their owners of being infected.

GO GLAMPING!

Upgrade your camping plans and go 'glamping' instead.

Pitching a tent, sleeping on the ground, and the lack of... shall we say... proper facilities, is what typically accompanies the camping experience. However, what if you could still enjoy the campfires, the picnics, and the beauty of nature but still sleep on a mattress and have a real shower too, maybe even air conditioning? The Cozy Peach at Schnepf Farms has a fleet of beautifully restored vintage Airstreams and other trailers for you to choose from and experience a more glamorous form of camping or 'glamping'.

CONTINUED >

Set on the grounds of Schnepf Farms and amidst mature trees with beautiful views of the mountains, you can enjoy lawn games and barbeques, while at the same time sleeping on plush bedding and still watching movies on a flat screen tv. Guests of the Cozy Peach can also enjoy the Country Store, the Bakery, the Upick gardens, train rides, and more during their stay.

You can even enhance your 'glamping' experience by ordering from their catering menu, which is updated monthly for guests, to opt in for a Farm to Fork experience at a communal dining table.  You can also enjoy breakfast at the Country Store Cafe and whatever seasonal activities are on offer. Meanwhile, the vintage trailers, which

still have some of their original features provide a comfortable and stylish backdrop. Each trailer has its own grass yard and patio as well as a kitchen stocked with dinnerware and a coffee machine.

The Cozy Peach has everything to enjoy the outdoors with corn hole and even a ping pong table. They also have bicycles for you to ride around the farm, or if you are so inclined, pick up some warm pastries from the bakery. You can come as a couple or as a group as there are several communal areas for everyone to gather and roast marshmallows or watch the sun go down. Nearby picnic tables can accommodate a crowd, or a cozy bistro table for two just outside your trailer.

So for those who like the sound of camping but would rather skip the rougher parts, the Cozy Peach at Schnepf Farms is the perfect compromise. Create a memorable time with family or friends, whether it is a weekend away, a birthday celebration, or a bachelorette party. Your time at the Cozy Peach is that touch of nature without completely giving up modern conveniences. Who says you can't go camping in style? www.schnepffarms.com/glamping

Ivy AND SAGE

A TREASURE TROVE OF UNIQUE PIECES, BIG AND SMALL, TO STYLE THE SEASON WITH.

ARTICLE BY FLORENCE DANIELS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY JOHNSON

Upon entering through the doors of Ivy and Sage Lifestyle Co., your eyes will lead you into a shop of curiosities where you are instantly met with towering mushrooms, garlands of fall leaves, and the animated expressions of jack o’ lanterns. It might still be in the triple digits outside, but inside is a golden landscape of Autumnal hues and scents. Fall has arrived.

If you find yourself lingering as you shop, that may well be the idea. This is not just a store for furniture, accessories, decor, and gifts, though it certainly does all that.  This

is an experience. Owners, Jill and Thomas Herman, are mother and son who left the corporate world to do something in which they could support the talents of others.

In addition to the Ivy and Sage brand of products there are about 15 local vendors, as well as hundred of small businesses from across the nation represented.

The ornate and creative displays are built by a number of designers and artists that work in concert to create a magical world of everything Fall during the five days that Ivy and Sage shut down. However, all of what you see had been carefully planned for a year before that. There are no neatly lined shelves here with

strict aisles. Instead, the pieces seem to cascade forth, one leading to the next, as you travel through meandering pathways. Thomas says this lends itself to ‘the thrill of the treasure hunt’.

For the last four years Ivy and Sage has been passionate about inspiring seasonal styling with customer care. They have even become a destination for many of their original products and displays. A place to explore and experience for yourself. They are open seven days a week with the exception of resets and holidays.

Copper Brim Hat Bar

Style starts with the head and comes from the heart.

Owners Logan Gililland, Cari Gililland, Jordan Anderson, and Morgan Dimbatt run a mobile custom hat bar. What is a hat bar you ask? The chance to design a hat using a variety of accessories, brands, feathers, ribbons, even playing cards. The result, says Logan, 'is a hat that perfectly matches your style and personality.'

The inspiration for their hat bar came during a family trip to Texas. They came across a hat bar and thought the experience was fun and original, spurring them to bring the concept back home. The name of Copper Brim Hat Bar came about after careful consideration. They wanted a name that mingled both the product and a nod to their home state of Arizona. Once known as the 'Copper State', Arizona was so rich in copper that it eclipsed all other precious metals.

The hats on offer include flat-brim hats, cowboy hats, and trucker hats, along with a wide range of customization options. Depending on what catches your eye, you might choose from scarves, dried florals,

or matchbooks. Branding is another customization using numerous symbols, letters, and numbers. For trucker hats, there are hundreds of patches to choose from, covering themes from western designs to funny sayings. Additionally, you can also use chains and pins to further personalize your hat.

Logan says the appeal to their customers is 'the opportunity to create something that truly represents their style and personality'. The process of designing a hat is in itself part of the excitement and creativity. Logan says it best when she discusses style and Queen Creek:

'The town has grown significantly, but it has retained its strong western roots. The local style reflects this heritage, with many people wearing boots and jeans, embodying a blend of hard work and western fashion. However, there is also a casual, trendy aspect to the way people dress here, making it the perfect setting for custom hats.'

The result, says Logan, 'is a hat that perfectly matches your style and personality.’

The Tower of London

THE SETTING FOR HISTORY, ROYALTY, AND TRAGEDY IN ONE INCREDIBLE SPOT.

The White Tower
““...the Tower of London... has been the site of murder, executions, ghost stories, revolts, and daring escapes.”

Legend has it that if the ravens in the Tower of London ever leave, the monarchy and the country will fall. The ravens strut around as if they know this and happily pose for photos. If you want a snapshot of English history, the Tower of London is your first stop. First built by William the Conqueror in 1076, it has been the site of murder, executions, ghost stories, revolts, and daring escapes. In addition to being the site of some famous and even royal executions, it is also where the crown jewels are housed. Get a taste of history and some family fun when you visit this historic site by the river Thames.

RUSTIC CREEK LANDSCAPING BRINGS STYLE AND BEAUTY TO YOUR BACKYARD.

In Arizona, our backyards are extensions of our homes, allowing us to create a space that reflects how we want to spend time outdoors. Rustic Creek Landscaping, based in Queen Creek, helps their clients find that balance between the demands of the desert and our personal tastes. Owners, Nick and Stacey Bluth, customize each yard they work on to the personality of the homeowner. One of their clients, Audrey, kindly allowed us a chance to see how a vision becomes her very own oasis of peace and calm.

CREATING 'ROOMS'

RUSTIC CREEK LANDSCAPING

Nick and Stacey began their business 20 years ago with just a shovel and a wheelbarrow. Now they use their unique eye and extensive knowledge to create an exciting outdoor area that works for clients. For Audrey, they included an outdoor kitchen, various focal points, pergolas for shade, and even trails to follow and explore the L-shaped garden.

Outside of summer, the temperature is some of the most temperate in the nation. Therefore cooking, lounging, and watching tv are even better in the fresh air. This outdoor kitchen and fireplace allows for a gathering space that is cozy and versatile. The pergola also offers shade from the direction of the setting sun. Being aware of the sun's position helps with layouts and planting too.

HARDSCAPES

TEXTURES AND LAYERS

Nick advises to plant vegetation where taller plants grow behind shorter ones, allowing for a layered effect. He also advocates for the use of different colors and sizes in the gravel and rocks to create contrast and interest that draws the eye around the entire space. In Audrey's backyard, Nick also softened cactus with nearby pygmy palms.

For Audrey, Nick reduced the grass and used pavers and trails to enhance the feel and look of a desert landscape. However, the use of potted plants, various vines for pops of color, heat hardy flowering plants, and maintaining some of the pre-existing mature trees meant that the effect still was lush and green rather than dusty and brown. Therefore by intermingling hardscapes wisely with well positioned desert plants and proper watering lines you can achieve a low maintenance garden.
