Journeys Close to Home

Travel does not always require crossing oceans or chas ing distant horizons. Sometimes, the most meaningful escapes are found in the places that continue to inspire us to slow down, explore more deeply, and reconnect with beauty, history, and community. In this Travel Issue, we celebrate destinations and stories that remind us to live with curiosity and intention, whether just beyond the Beltway or along the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

This issue takes readers from the timeless water front of Washington to the easy elegance of Bimini, where crystal waters and relaxed sophistication offer the perfect island retreat. For more than 250 years, the Potomac River has shaped the story of the nation, flowing through the heart of Washington as a timeless symbol of history, progress, and place. Our cover artwork captures that enduring contrast, with Kirsten Nicholson poised between the river’s storied past and the modern elegance of the luxury waterfront that defines its banks today. In Puerto Rico, we explore the enduring legacy of Caribe Hilton, a historic resort that helped define tropical luxury while remaining deeply connected to the culture and spirit of Old San Juan.

Closer to home, we look at the enduring influence of the  Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce as it marks 100 years of leadership, advocacy, and community impact. We also celebrate the remarkable 125 year legacy of  Schaeffer's Piano Company, a family business whose craftsmanship and devotion to music have quietly shaped generations across the Washington region.

Along the banks of the Potomac River, we revisit the iconic hotels, historic landmarks, and waterfront destinations that continue to define the character of the capital region. We also invite readers inside Bar Angie, where thoughtful dining and vibrant atmosphere reflect the evolving energy of the city’s culinary scene.

Throughout these pages, you will also find our latest Around Town selections, curated experiences, and seasonal inspiration designed to encourage exploration both near and far.

At its heart, this issue is about choosing to live life adventurously. It is about saying yes to the weekend getaway, the hidden local gem, the historic destination rediscovered, and the experiences that leave lasting impressions long after the journey ends.

We hope this issue inspires your next adventure.

Bon Voyage!

In the past century, the market has fallen more than 20% on 22 separate occasions, with the average bear market decline reaching -37%. If history repeats itself, and it usually does. Think about it.

Are you prepared to lose 30% or more of your portfolio in the next 12 months?

THE UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH

Millions of investors believe they have active “money management,” when in reality they are paying for a buy-and-hold strategy with no protection. When markets fall, most advisors do nothing and still collect their fees. That’s not management. That’s exposure & neglect..

THERE IS A BETTER WAY

In his new book, John F. Reutemann Jr., CLU®, CFP®, reveals what most advisors won’t tell you and what you can do to protect yourself. With over 50 years of experience, he outlines how to:

• Recognize early warning signs of market downturns

• Avoid advisors who rely on outdated strategies

• Use disciplined approaches like sector rotation and trend signals

• Demand real risk management, not excuses

DON’T LET YOUR MONEY BECOME THE BEAR’S NEXT MEAL

If your portfolio dropped significantly in past market crashes and you were told it was “normal,” you’re not alone.

But you do have a choice moving forward.

Bimini, EFFORTLESSLY REFINED

Classic coastal luxury, thoughtfully reimagined

Bimini has a way of reminding you that a true escape does not always require a long journey. Just beyond South Florida, the island offers a striking change of scenery, where impossibly clear turquoise water and open skies signal that the pace is about to slow. It reads accessible, yet special, the kind of destination that allows you to disconnect quickly while still feeling fully immersed in the experience.

Resorts World Bimini reflects this balance beautifully, combining contemporary comfort with the relaxed elegance of coastal living. The marina sets the tone upon arrival, often framed by sleek yachts gently moving with the tide, creating an atmosphere that feels polished yet welcoming. Spanning hundreds of acres, the resort provides space to explore while maintaining a sense of calm that never feels overwhelming.

Amenities are thoughtfully designed to complement the natural surroundings. The rooftop infinity pool connects with the horizon seamlessly, while the beach club’s cabanas offer an idyllic setting with soft sands and calm,  shoreline views. Guests may also enjoy a full-service spa, boutique gaming concept, and various dining venues all of which transition easily from relaxed daytime meals to refined evening experiences.

Fresh pastas, grilled fish, and refreshing cocktails reflect the destination’s easy sophistication, where marina side dining adds an especially memorable backdrop as boats drift quietly in the distance. What makes Bimini especially memorable is its natural sense of balance. THE GREATER BETHESDA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF LEADERSHIP, ADVOCACY, AND GROWTH IN BETHESDA AND BEYOND

For a century, the  Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce has served as one of the defining forces behind the growth and evolution of Bethesda and the surrounding Montgomery County region. What began in 1926 as a modest gathering of local business leaders has grown into one of the area’s most influential civic and economic organizations, shaping not only commerce, but also the identity of the community itself.

As the Chamber celebrates its centennial anniversary this year, the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on a legacy built through advocacy, collaboration, and a deep understanding that thriving businesses and thriving communities are inseparable.

Long before Bethesda became nationally recognized for its dynamic downtown, flourishing culinary scene, and expanding innovation economy, local leaders recognized the importance of creating a unified voice for business. Informal meetings among merchants and professionals in the mid 1920s laid the groundwork for what would officially become the Chamber on April 1, 1926. Their goal was straightforward yet ambitious: strengthen the local business climate while helping guide the future of a growing community.

That spirit of forward thinking leadership would define the organization for decades to come.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the Chamber became deeply involved in efforts that would shape the region’s infrastructure and accessibility. Advocacy surrounding transportation improvements, road development, and public services helped position Bethesda for long term economic growth at a time when suburban communities surrounding Washington were rapidly evolving. These early initiatives reflected an understanding that economic vitality depended not only on commerce, but on thoughtful planning and investment in the broader community experience.

By the 1950s, the Chamber had expanded both its reach and influence. Under the leadership of President Robert R. Furman, the organization broadened its programming and introduced initiatives designed to strengthen retail development and encourage ethical business practices. The Chamber also played an instrumental role in attracting major investment to the region, including a successful campaign supporting a significant Pepco facility in Maryland, generating meaningful economic impact for the surrounding area.

The organization’s growing regional presence led to its renaming in 1956 as the Bethesda Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce, reflecting a wider commitment

to representing businesses across neighboring communities. Membership quickly surged, surpassing 500 members by 1957, a remarkable achievement that underscored the Chamber’s growing importance within the region’s civic and economic life.

At the same time, the Chamber embraced creative ways to engage the public and strengthen local connections. Community guides, radio programming, and youth focused initiatives demonstrated an organization that understood the importance of cultivating both commerce and community engagement. Even in its early decades, the Chamber recognized that sustainable growth required more than economic success alone. It required participation, visibility, and shared investment in the future of the region.

That philosophy continued well into the modern era as the Chamber remained closely connected to many of the region’s most transformative initiatives. From supporting transportation projects such as the Purple Line to advocating around economic development tied to the expansion and relocation of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the Chamber consistently positioned itself as a trusted convener between business leaders, government officials, and community stakeholders.

Left to right- Carla Young, IOM Vice President, Membership & Community Relations, Allie Williams, IOM President & CEO, Clarissa Harris, Vice

Its role has often extended beyond traditional business advocacy. During periods of economic uncertainty and moments of broader community challenge, the Chamber has helped support public safety efforts, promote local businesses, and foster collaboration across industries. That adaptability has remained one of the organization’s defining strengths across changing decades and economic climates.

Today, the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce represents more than 650 member businesses spanning a wide range of industries, reflecting the diversity and sophistication of the modern Bethesda economy. From healthcare and hospitality to technology, retail, professional services, and nonprofit leadership, the Chamber continues to serve as both an advocate and connector for the region’s business community.

Yet despite its growth, the organization remains rooted in the same core principles that guided its founders a century ago: supporting businesses, strengthening community partnerships, and creating opportunities for long term prosperity.

“As we celebrate 100 years, we honor the visionaries who built this organization and the members who continue to shape its future,” said Allie Williams, IOM, President and CEO. “Our history is rooted in advocacy, collaboration, and community impact, and we are energized to carry that legacy forward into the next century.”

That balance between honoring history and embracing innovation remains central to the Chamber’s identity as it enters its second century. Bethesda itself has evolved dramatically over the past 100 years, transforming from a developing suburban corridor into one of the Washington region’s most influential business and cultural destinations. Throughout that transformation, the Chamber has

remained a steady presence helping guide conversations around growth, infrastructure, and economic opportunity.

The centennial celebration serves not only as a tribute to the past, but also as an invitation to imagine what comes next.

On October 29, the Chamber will commemorate the milestone with its Centennial Gala, themed “Our Connection with our Past, Empowers our Future.” The evening will celebrate the people, partnerships, and vision that have shaped the organization’s first century while looking ahead to the next era of leadership and regional impact.

For an organization built on connection, collaboration, and civic purpose, the anniversary represents far more than longevity. It reflects a century spent helping businesses grow, communities evolve, and Bethesda establish itself as one of the region’s most vibrant and enduring destinations.

Legacy & Luxury

HOW THE POTOMAC TELLS AMERICA’S STORY, FROM HISTORIC ICONS TO WATERFRONT ESCAPES

Few waterways in America carry a story quite like the Potomac River. Long before rooftop cocktails, waterfront promenades and luxury hotels lined its shores, the Potomac served as a lifeline for commerce, politics and the shaping of a young nation. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the river once traveled by presidents, visionaries and revolutionaries continues to define how people gather, celebrate and experience the nation’s capital.

For centuries, the Potomac has connected communities, fueled commerce and framed some of the nation’s most important moments. Today, that same river tells another story: one of reinvention. Along its shores, America’s history and modern luxury now exist side by side, creating a distinctly elevated journey through the Mid-Atlantic.

On one side of the story sit Washington’s enduring legacy properties, places where history lives not in museum cases but in grand ballrooms, marble corridors and stories whispered over generations.

The iconic InterContinental The Willard Washington, D.C., often called "the living room of America," has welcomed presidents, diplomats and world leaders for more than a century. Political deals, inaugural celebrations and defining conversations have unfolded beneath its chandeliers. Its halls remain part hotel, part living archive.

Nearby, The Hay-Adams continues to embody old-world Washington elegance. Overlooking the White House, the historic property delivers timeless luxury with one of the city’s most coveted views. The St. Regis Washington, D.C.,

“Historic ballroom chandeliers and rooftop sunset cocktails now tell the same Potomac story.”

another enduring landmark, brings nearly a century of glamour and refined hospitality to the capital.

Then there is The Watergate Hotel, whose dramatic curves and striking midcentury architecture make it one of Washington’s most recognizable addresses. Positioned along the Potomac, the hotel occupies a unique place in both design and political history. Long associated with one of the most talked-about moments in American history, the property has evolved far beyond the headlines that first made it famous. Today, following a thoughtful renovation, The Watergate blends sleek contemporary luxury with subtle nods to its storied past. Guests can take in rooftop views overlooking the Kennedy Center and Potomac, unwind in sophisticated surroundings and experience a property that remains one of Washington’s most recognizable and enduring destinations.

Beyond Washington, another icon quietly continues its own remarkable chapter.

Nestled within the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, The Greenbrier has welcomed guests since 1778, dating back to the Revolutionary era and placing it on the

Must-Try Dish: Milk Bread

doorstep of America's own 250-year celebration. Known as "America’s Resort," the legendary retreat began as a destination where visitors traveled to experience the area's natural mineral springs. Over nearly two and a half centuries, The Greenbrier has hosted 28 U.S. presidents, international dignitaries and generations of travelers seeking equal parts grandeur and escape.

History permeates every corner. During the Civil War, the property served as a hospital and military command center. Decades later, it housed a secret Cold War congressional bunker hidden beneath the resort. Yet despite its remarkable past, The Greenbrier never feels frozen in time. Dorothy Draper’s vibrant interiors, grand staircases and signature hospitality continue to make it feel both nostalgic and unexpectedly fresh.

These destinations represent a version of luxury rooted in permanence, places that have endured because they offer more than accommodations. Voted a favorite by Potomac Lifestyle Publisher KC Cole and must-see, especially during the holidays! They preserve experiences.

Still, the Potomac’s newest chapter may be equally compelling.

Along Washington’s Southwest waterfront, The Wharf has transformed into one of the capital’s most dynamic luxury destinations. Once an industrial waterfront, the area now blends marinas, music venues, restaurants and waterfront living into a modern gathering place that feels distinctly Washington.

Among its standout properties, InterContinental Washington D.C. – The Wharf offers a sophisticated interpretation of waterfront hospitality. Floor-to-ceiling views overlook the Potomac, while rooftop spaces frame sunsets that seem designed specifically for long evenings and unhurried cocktails.

Inside the hotel, Willowsong has quickly emerged as one of the waterfront’s most exciting culinary experiences.

abundance through a modern American menu led by Executive Chef Jeffrey Williams. Nearly 60% of ingredients are sourced within 150 miles of Washington, creating dishes that feel deeply connected to the surrounding region.

Williams returns to Washington after building an acclaimed career across Los Angeles and Miami, earning recognition through national television appearances and culinary accolades along the way.

One menu item has already developed a following of its own: Willowsong’s milk bread.

The restaurant sold nearly 3,000 orders during its opening year, transforming a seemingly simple dish into something guests now seek out intentionally. Warm, rich and perfectly indulgent, it reflects the larger philosophy behind Willowsong: familiar flavors elevated through craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Inspired by a favorite milk bread from Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, Williams created his own pull-apart version rooted in a traditional milk bread recipe. The dough is intentionally slightly over-proofed, then steamed before baking, allowing each order to be prepared fresh and creating its signature texture. Served with brown butter whipped with miso and yuzu and finished with salmon roe, the dish balances sweet and savory flavors in a way that feels both elevated and comforting.

The pairing feels fitting. Along the Potomac, the story has always been about gathering.

Centuries ago, that meant trade routes and diplomacy. Today, it may look like rooftop cocktails overlooking the river, dinner reservations at the waterfront or weekends spent wandering between historic landmarks and luxury hotels.

Named for the willow trees woven throughout the nation’s capital, the restaurant celebrates the Mid-Atlantic’s agricultural

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the Potomac remains what it has always been: a place where stories converge. Only now, historic ballroom chandeliers share the spotlight with rooftop sunsets. And history comes with a waterfront view.

ASK THE VET

Q: It’s been so hot lately—how do I know if my dog is at risk for heat stroke, and what can I do to prevent it?

A: Great question — and one we hear a lot this time of year. Heat stroke is one of the most dangerous (and often preventable) emergencies we see during the summer months. Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat to cool off; they rely on panting, which isn’t always enough in extreme temperatures.

The Caribe Hilton Hotel

A Staple of Puerto Rico’s Hospitality Industry in Old San Juan

If you are planning a trip to Puerto Rico, consider staying at the Caribe Hilton – a resort that offers history, a great beach, and a true resort feel just a short drive from Old San Juan. The hotel sits on a 17-acre peninsula that includes a beach, pools, nine dining options including full-service restaurants, casual dining and cafes, bars, lounges, and room service, a full-service spa, tennis courts, and countless other amenities.

As the largest hotel in San Juan, it accommodates both groups and leisure travelers. For groups, it has 652 guest rooms and meeting and event space for gatherings of any size. Weddings and wedding receptions take place both outdoors in beachfront locations and in indoor venues including an elegant ballroom or small event rooms.

And families are more than welcome and can also enjoy the three cascading pools, and a splash pad for the kids.

The Caribe Hilton was the first international Hilton hotel outside of the continental United States. Founded in 1949, Puerto Rico’s government owned the land and promoted building a hotel there with the goal of attracting tourists. Conrad Hilton saw it as a great opportunity to expand the Hilton empire. With its location and generous resort ambiance, it attracted celebrities, politicians, and royalty, including Elizabeth Taylor, Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly, and former President Barack Obama.

Caribe Hilton offers ten novel food experiences where there is something for everyone. They range from Nectar Del Caribe’s breakfast buffet, Caribar – a destination bar with panoramic ocean views, Lola’s Puerto Rican Cuisine, the Italian Rustica Ristorante, Bagua – a poolside swim-up bar and casual al fresco restaurant, Mojito’s Caribbean Fusion, Morton’s The Steakhouse, Starbucks, Ice Cream and Cookie Co., and – of course – room service for the tired traveler. No visit to the hotel’s many culinary offerings is complete without sampling the piña colada. In 1954 the hotel’s bartender, Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, created a refreshing drink consisting of coconut and heavy creams, and pineapple juice. He later added local rum, starting the region’s tropical cocktail movement. Today the hotel claims that more than 59,000 piña coladas are made yearly. In 1978 Monchito’s signature beverage was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico.

The Caribe Hilton offers guests many on-site and off-site activities, including guided island tours and excursions. This writer enjoyed an unexpected offering in the resort: the Live Bomba y Plena experience, where our group enjoyed an AfroPuerto Rican cultural tradition complete with dancing and drums. From yoga to ocean adventures including snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking, the Caribe Hilton offers plenty of diversions both on and off the resort property.

Ten minutes away is Old San Juan, whose people have a distinct cultural heritage, deriving from Spanish, Caribbean, and American history. Old San Juan’s colorful streets, history, music, ocean views, and great food are all packed into seven square miles. Visitors can sense both a

historic city with a European background, a seaside town in the Caribbean that is home to the Spanish forts of El Morro and San Cristóbal, built to protect the town from invaders, and 16th-century Spanish colonial buildings and churches, including the San Juan Bautista Cathedral.

One must-visit site in San Juan is the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, which houses a mix of contemporary and historic pieces, many dating back to the 18th-century, such as the well-known painting The Daughters of Governor Ramon de Castro, painted in 1797. Another is the charming restaurant La Casita Blanca, known for its traditional Puerto Rican cuisine. After the Puerto Rican rapper, actor, and singer-songwriter Bad Bunny was spotted eating lunch there, this lovely dining spot became a popular tourist destination.

THE ENDURING CRAFT OF SCHAEFFER’S PIANO

125 YEARS IN PERFECT TUNE

Rick Schaeffer has spent his entire life around pianos. Today, he owns and runs a family business that started 125 years ago. It all began with his grandfather tuning pianos along the Washington, DC-to-Glen Echo trolley line in 1901. In a country turning 250 this year, 125 years is a remarkable legacy. Yet for the Schaeffers, it was never about longevity but a love for the instrument, passed down through four generations.

1ST GENERATION

John Pierre Schaeffer (founder and grandfather) came from Luxembourg, where his family was musical, and he trained as a concert pianist. He arrived in the Washington, DC, area around 1901 and began tuning pianos in DC and Montgomery County. He spoke French, German, and English, and is believed to have tuned pianos at the White House for President Theodore Roosevelt. As a German immigrant during the World Wars, life was difficult, yet he kept working, and eventually his son Albert joined him in the business.

2ND GENERATION

Albert Victor Schaeffer (father) served in World War II as an aircraft mechanic on aircraft carriers in both the Pacific and Atlantic. When he came home, he joined his father in the piano business. In 1951, the family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, where Albert opened a storefront on Sligo Avenue: the Silver Spring Piano Company.

In 1980, he moved to his second location in Gaithersburg. Albert was a self-taught ‘fixer’ who could handle almost anything: pianos, plumbing, and electrical work. He worked long hours his entire career and passed every one of those skills on to Rick. He died of lung cancer, at 62, in 1982.

3RD GENERATION

Frederick Earl Schaeffer (Rick, the current owner) started working in the shop at age 13, cleaning and helping out after school every day. He studied at Montgomery College, but chose the family business over finishing his degree. After his father’s death in 1982, Rick took over the family business. Under his leadership, the store now

does 2,000 tunings a year, sells 150 pianos, and restores at least a dozen Steinways annually. Rick has tuned pianos at the White House for Presidents Carter, Clinton, and Obama, and at major venues, including the Library of Congress and Ford’s Theatre.

Carolyn Jean Schaeffer (Rick’s wife, and store manager) studied political science, and worked as a political analyst before meeting Rick. When they started a family, she shifted her focus to the business. Today, she manages the day-to-day operations of Schaeffer’s Piano. Rick credits her sharp mind, and attention to detail, as essential to keeping everything running smoothly.

4TH GENERATION

Megan Hamilton Schaeffer (Rick’s daughter, and marketing manager) studied art at the College of Charleston and built a career in fine art inventory management software. Based in Atlanta, she helps Schaeffer’s Piano develop its marketing and digital strategy while also managing the family’s historic photo archive, which includes images dating back to the family’s roots in Luxembourg. Megan works closely with her mother, Carolyn, and cousin Tim to help carry forward the family’s four-generation tradition of excellence.

Timothy Essick (Rick’s nephew) is in the fourth generation of the family’s piano business. Rick says he “spotted [Tim’s] potential after watching him completely take apart, and perfectly put back together, the dashboard of a Ford Mustang at a family gathering.” That kind of patience and precision is exactly what piano rebuilding requires. Tim originally planned to become a police officer, but was injured before he could qualify. One summer, he came to work at the store and never left. Fifteen years later, he now runs the store’s daily operations, carrying on the family tradition.

THE BALOS

restaurant group

Rooted in Hospitality

Balos Restaurant Group Owners Joe Ragonese, Stefanos Vouvoudakis, and Tom Tsiplakos
Balos Estiatorio

In Washington’s ever-evolving culinary landscape, where trends can feel fleeting and competition relentless, the rise of the Balos Restaurant Group has been both immediate and intentional. Founded by Stefanos Vouvoudakis, Tom Tsiplakos, and Joe Ragonese, the group arrived in the District in 2023 with a vision grounded in timeless hospitality, elevated dining, and the belief that restaurants should feel as celebratory as they are refined.

Their flagship concept, Balos Estiatorio, quickly became one of Dupont Circle’s most coveted reservations. Inspired by the famed Balos lagoon in Crete, the restaurant channels the warmth and effortless beauty of the Greek islands through airy interiors, fresh seafood displays, and a lively atmosphere designed to transport guests beyond the city. The restaurant’s “sea-to-table” philosophy and commitment to pristine ingredients soon earned recognition from the Michelin Guide, solidifying its place among Washington’s standout dining destinations.

But Balos is as much about experience as cuisine. The restaurant has developed a reputation for spirited evenings where dinner seamlessly turns into celebration. High-profile guests, including Alexander Ovechkin, Barack Obama, and Seth Rogen, have all passed through its doors, drawn not only by the menu, but by the unmistakable energy that has become synonymous with the brand. Signature moments, including the restaurant’s festive napkin-tossing tradition, have transformed Balos into a setting where milestones are celebrated with unmistakable Greek exuberance.

The group has also proven its versatility beyond dinner service. Balos’ polished power lunches and sought-after weekend brunches have become staples for the Dupont and West End crowd, with standout offerings including Lobster Benedict, Baklava French Toast, and specialty coffee cocktails created in partnership with For Five Coffee Roasters.

Building on that momentum, the group expanded with Bar Angie in the city’s West End. Moodier and more intimate, the concept blends classic New York bistro energy with European sophistication. Tableside martinis, refined comfort dishes, and playful signatures like the Angie Chop Martini reflect the group’s ability to balance elegance with personality.

Now, with The Angie planned for Ballston and the Italian concept Sorella slated for 2027, the Balos Restaurant Group continues to expand thoughtfully across the region. What began as a shared vision between three friends has quickly evolved into one of Washington’s most dynamic hospitality stories, defined by bold flavors, memorable experiences, and an enduring commitment to old-world warmth.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
