Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds is universal.
Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about coming home from a tropical trip to H2O Suites in Key West - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people.
Interested in the latest home trends? Let Sharifa Wellman and her expert team guide you through your home improvement project. Want to gear your smart home with the latest tech? A.B.E. Networks has you covered. As for landscape and curbs, A1 Trees and Curbs Gone Wild are your best bet.
We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood and most all ofyour home. And when you’re looking for a home away from home for the most precious members of your family, look no further than our kids summer camp round up, including PLM mainstays Academy Child Development Center, Georgetown Hill, Fusion Academy and others.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!

When Potomac homeowners want to make high tech improvements, they do not have to sacrifice high style. That is the mission of A.B.E. Networks founded in 1991 in a garage in Silver Spring.
Now based in Rockville, they introduce their customers to what they call “design-driven custom installations” like home theaters, conference rooms, state of the art security for residence and commercial buildings, and fast Wi-Fi coverage for every inch of the property.
“As technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are permeating into everything from dishwashers to sprinkler systems, the need to integrate these technologies has never been greater,” explains Avi Benaim, president of A.B.E, and a leading colon cancer advocate.
“Remaining on the cutting edge is what drives us and sets us apart as technologists. Achieving the desired result while maintaining an aesthetic appreciation is another A.B.E. trademark.” This is what Benaim calls “leading with design.”
CONTINUED >
In 2023, A.B.E. won the Home and Design Readers’ Choice Award in the Smart Home category and the Interiors Washington Best of Design Award among other past accolades.
Benaim says consumers considering technical upgrades to their homes should do research on the firms they hire as this area is an emerging market, and there are many contractors getting into the business without the necessary expertise.
His best advice to a new client is “to communicate their vision without constraint, first. Then apply the practical implications following that. This gives us the frame of reference to guide the client to their dream system. The second bit of
advice is to make certain that the underlying infrastructure to achieve that vision remains in place to allow them to execute in a modular fashion over time should the budget not allow for immediate wholesale execution."
Their Instagram account @abenetworks showcases their adventures in everything from automated window treatments to motorized skylight shades and turning basements into home theaters in homes across greater Washington.
“Everything from your countertop voice assistant to barbecue grill will have embedded AI by the time the snow thaws this year,” Benaim says.

Other major trends savvy homeowners and real estate investors should be aware of are human centric lighting that follows the sun’s movement and color temperatures, audio solutions that match lighting fixtures, and, of course, integrating voice-activated systems to cater to your every whim.
These trends not only make life easier for us but make our carbon footprints much lighter.
“Energy management is a burgeoning space that is changing the way that people see power delivery in their home. Efficiencies in solar are cutting into the market once dominated by gas powered generators, and these systems even further bolster the savings and reduce environmental impacts.”
FOUNDER ROB HUFFMAN AND HIS FAMILY ARE CRAFTING CUSTOM CURBS ACROSS THE DMV
Curbs Gone Wild is a local company based in Potomac that provides custom decorative concrete curbing for residential and commercial properties.
In the spring of 2003, Rob Huffman, company founder and decorated Navy Veteran, took a leap of faith and launched Curbs Gone Wild, a business specializing in handcrafted decorative concrete curbing for residential and commercial properties. This began a remarkable entrepreneurial journey for Rob and his family. Little did they know that their venture would grow into a local family business that would
captivate clients and revolutionize the curbing industry across the DMV region. “It is the first thing a visitor sees when they come to your home. It is why people drive through neighborhoods to get ideas for their homes,” said Huffman.
Rob started his journey into the world of decorative concrete curbing over 20 years ago and is a testament to his innate skill and passion for the industry. As the son of a brick mason and concrete contractor, Rob was exposed to the craftsmanship and artistry of working with concrete from an early age and his first job was building concrete buildings and mausoleums. It was this exposure that laid the foundation for his future success.
Now, their reputation extends nationwide, with other curbing companies seeking their guidance and expertise. Curbs Gone Wild is a testament to his family’s passion, expertise, and family values. Rob, alongside his sons, daughter, and brother has created a legacy of excellence that has left an indelible mark on the decorative curb industry.
“We have actually installed curbing at multiple homes for the same customers as they upgrade,” said Huffman. “That is the great thing about curbing, it’s beautiful but extremely functional, so once you have it in your yard, there is no going back to other bordering systems, nothing else compares.”

Wellman General Contracting & Home Improvements, located in Gaithersburg, has been remodeling homes for happy clients across the DMV for more than a decade. We spoke with designer Sharifa Wellman about the services her company provides. From kitchen remodels to drywall, Wellman is well versed in home improvements.
1. WHAT TYPE OF WORK DOES WELLMAN GENERAL CONTRACTING & HOME IMPROVEMENTS SPECIALIZE IN?
We’re a build design company specializing in kitchen, bathroom, and basement remodeling. We take care of all interior home remodeling needs, as well as window and door installation. Wellman General Contracting & Home Improvements utilizes our own master plumbers and electricians. We start with the estimation process with one of our experienced estimators, which then moves into the design and conceptualization phase with one of our in-house interior designers. We use computer aided drawings to recreate the potential new living space. After working with the designer, the next phase is to make the client’s dream living space a reality.
2. HOW LONG HAS THE COMPANY BEEN IN OPERATION?
The company has been in business since 2007. However, Duane Wellman comes from a long line of builders and stonemasons — he’s a fourth-generation contractor. My family was also in the construction business. My grandfather, alongside other family members, owned and operated a demolition company from the late 1960’s until the early 90’s.
CONTINUED >
3. HOW DO THE DESIGN TOOL VISUALIZATION OPTIONS ON THE WEBSITE HELP IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?
These tools empower homeowners to envision their dream spaces before the construction even begins. There are mock kitchens and bathrooms where clients can put together preliminary ideas to get a general idea of what certain colors and finishes look like in the space. They can plug in cabinets, countertops, tile, paint, etc. It helps ensure that the final result aligns perfectly with our client’s visions.
4. WHAT SETS WELLMAN APART FROM OTHERS IN THE INDUSTRY?
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to providing a personalized design experience. The DMV region is known for its diverse and dynamic communities. We embrace this diversity by tailoring our services to the unique needs of each homeowner. We believe in co-creating spaces that reflect the unique personality and style of each homeowner.
We have a showroom with approximately 5,000 sq. ft. of inventory to choose from — no need to pay a designer to come in with you, because we already have designers onsite! As a design-build firm, we’re a one-stop shop handling every step of the process from the initial consultation, to design and construction, to the final reveal. We believe you can’t rush the process; we take the time at each step to consider every detail.
5. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU CONSIDER AS AN IMPORTANT PART OF KITCHEN REMODEL THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED OR NOT TAKEN AS SERIOUSLY AS IT SHOULD BE?
The obvious go-to would naturally be cabinets or countertops, right? Well, I am going to say lighting. I can’t stress enough how important lighting is, not only in a kitchen, but in homes in general. The kitchen requires more lighting than other areas of the home. The importance of good lighting should never be overlooked when designing a kitchen. The designer must not only consider the type of lighting installed, but where the lighting is placed. Lighting is very important in a kitchen to provide the necessary visibility when cooking and preparing meals. It also provides and enhances the overall aesthetic of the space and sets the mood. Recessed lighting is a great, solid option. When the proper size and amount of them are installed, it ensures the space has enough light. What use is it to have great cabinets, countertops, and a beautiful backsplash, if you don’t have the proper lighting to see or enhance it?
When we design a kitchen, we always look to layer the lighting. There will be ceiling lights, recessed or flushed, etc. Undercabinet lighting is great for ambient/accent lighting. Pendant lighting is great over islands as not only accent lighting, but to illuminate the area for prep work. It establishes the nice decorative islands as centerpieces in any luxury kitchen.
This past decade, grey was the new beige. Over the past 3-4 years we’ve been seeing a lot of blue tones. We’ve seen it in paint colors as well as kitchen cabinets. When designing, I’m not seeing many full kitchens in blue, but islands and tile work are bringing more blue into the space. The second half of 2023 and going into 2024, we’re seeing the resurgence of earth tones working their way back into our clients living spaces. “Greige” is the color to look out for. It is a color that is a combo blend of grey and beige. Taupe in a sense but with an affinity towards more of a grey but will blend well with earth tones. Multiple shades of green are making their way into the cabinet rotation as well.
Another thing I was surprised to see but welcomed it wholeheartedly was the migration towards the brushed gold finish in the metals used in kitchen and bath in 2023. 2024 will definitely see more of this as well as mixed metals.
Wellman General Contracting & Home Improvements services Frederick County, Montgomery County, and Washington, D.C.
A1 Tree Pros, the trusted tree and landscaping service provider in Montgomery County, is dedicated to preserving trees and turning clients' visions into reality. From planting new trees to removing stumps, the company approaches every project with moderation for optimal results in tree and shrub health and longevity.
Owner Jeremiah McCarthy relishes the opportunity to visit clients' homes, walk properties, and provide insights on maintenance, landscaping, and tree selections. This personalized connection allows gradual project phases, which aligns with clients' long-term goals of achieving a desired look.
The optimal time for planting new trees is between April and mid-October. The choice of tree depends on individual preference, desired maintenance levels, and consideration of the property’s overall ambiance.
After planting, proper nurturing and watering schedules are crucial. Jeremiah advises against overwatering saplings, highlighting the resilience of trees that can often thrive with less water than expected. A two- to three-foot shrub typically needs
a half-gallon of water once every 10 days, with adjustments based on seasons.
Tree removal is viewed as a last resort by licensed experts at A1 Tree Pros. Diagnosis precedes removal, with potential treatments like tree injections considered for diseases and insects. Jeremiah emphasizes the safety aspect, noting instances where inadequate planning led to possible safety hazards, urging evaluation when a third or more of a tree appears dead or sick.
Taking only a few hours, stump removal opens the possibility of transforming the area into grass. Jeremiah recommends grass seeding in the spring, assuring that within 120 days, the area can seamlessly blend as if a tree was never there.
A1 Tree Pros prioritizes safety in every project, regardless of size. The crew, trained for 100% certainty of predictable results, adheres to strict safety measures from every cut to every climb, ensuring the well-being of the team, clients, and surrounding structures.
Jeremiah McCarthy's deep connection to nature led him to establish A1 Tree Pros after realizing his fulfillment existed beyond a desk-bound career. Growing up in the D.C. area, he and his father found solace in the lush greenery of Gambrill State Park, inspiring Jeremiah to make Frederick County his permanent home.
Jeremiah's passion for the outdoors is evident in A1 Tree Pros' commitment to preservation. His projects, often taking him to unique properties, offer lessons in Civil War-era history, enriching both his work and the county's natural beauty. Providing budget-friendly options, Jeremiah and his crew guide clients through each step, striving to preserve Montgomery County's landscape for future generations.

The Center’s summer camp programs carry out those same priorities, offering families a place that feels like home.

“The program has diverse activities that are fun and educational and that facilitate social development and physical health.
