LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. On the heels of our holiday awards gala, we approached the January issue of Potomac Lifestyle from a mindset of valuing what is sustainable over the long haul; much like how our celebratory collaboration with Brandywine Living honored the staying power of community. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health in 2024. Follow the extraordinary path of Dr. Hassan A. Tetteh, whose mission statement is to make a positive impact and may lead to a new acai restaurant in Maryland, which we know “vegan coach” Joseph Blair would be grateful for! Learn how to become an ally for Autism, find clarity with therapist Jackie Aston or simply take a break and disappear into the desert –the luxurious Palm Springs of course. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. As a correction from our December issue, we’d like to recognize our partners Brandywine Living at Potomac who provided the beautiful stage not only for the cover shoot but for the PLM team spread. Couture gowns were provided by Anya by Vivien and can be perused at Westfield Montgomery mall in Bethesda. KC C O L E , P U B L I S H E R @ P OTO M AC L I F E S T Y L E D C

Monii
The PoshMallow
Monii embodies innovation in the personal care industry, representing a uniquely designed hair/beauty product that has no current equivalent in the market. Traditional towels, with their tendency to fall off the shoulders, and hair turbans, which can pull at the hair, are less than ideal solutions. Even vinyl capes, while water-resistant, often forfeit comfort, especially for home use. Monii, however, is meticulously crafted to be water-absorbent, unrestrictive, secure, and, above all, comfortable.
Handcrafted and decadent, PoshMallow is on a mission to create unique and indulgent kosher treats. Their high standards of quality and ingredient transparency are central to their philosophy. That’s why PoshMallows do not contain top allergens such as: tree nuts, peanuts, dairy, gluten, eggs, shellfish, artificial dyes, or sesame. Most PoshMallows do not contain soy. They carefully curate every ingredient, so you can feel confident knowing exactly what you are eating and sharing.

DR . H ASSA N A. TETTEH No moss grows under his feet!
Need inspiration as you tackle your new year’s resolution list? Consider learning about Dr. Hassan A. Tetteh and his work. He has accomplished more in his 50 years than most of us can even dream of. Dr. Tetteh is a heart and lung surgeon, author, A.I. expert, Navy veteran, professor, poet, marathon runner, TEDx speaker, medical school lecturer, and entrepreneur. He is also a husband and father of two. But he’s not content to rest on his laurels – he’ll be working on several more projects in the near future. First, a little more about Dr. Tetteh: Tetteh’s parents, originally from West Africa, moved to Brooklyn where he was born and raised. He dreamed of becoming an artist but his father had a different vision for him: he
wanted Hassan to become a doctor. However, months before he was to start medical school, he contracted bacterial meningitis and almost died. He believes focusing on becoming a doctor while sick gave him purpose and helped him get well. This experience led him to embrace the mind-body-spirit connection that has informed his medical practice ever since. He did recover, earning his medical degree and then completing his general surgery residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. Following his medical training, Tetteh joined the Navy in 1998. He spent 25 years in the service, having retired as a captain last summer. He reflects: “the uniqueness of serving in the military afforded me the opportunity to do things, which would have never

happened if I was a civilian surgeon…such as going back to school and traveling to over 50 countries – it opened the aperture of my world view.” He started his Naval career as a staff general surgeon at Bremerton Naval Hospital in Washington followed by two years as a carrier strike group surgeon on the USS Carl Vinson and deployment to the Persian Gulf. Dr. Tetteh advanced his education while in the Navy. He completed his thoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota, completed a mid-career MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School and finished an advanced cardiac surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In 2011, Dr. Tetteh earned an MBA in Medical Service Management from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. After graduation he endured eight grueling weeks in Camp LeJeune and was deployed to Afghanistan with II Marine Expeditionary Forces. Not surprisingly, the seven months he served as a combat surgeon, working and sleeping in a tent, was an eye-opener, even for someone used to the rough and tumble world of Brooklyn. Among his first casualties was a baby with a bullet in his heart. With other members of the surgical team he was able to operate on the child and save the baby’s life. However, soldiers suffering catastrophic injuries continued to present with a heartbreaking frequency. Returning to the States Dr. Tetteh never slowed down, and worked as a cardiothoracic surgeon at Walter Reed and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He joined the Washington Regional Transplant Consortium, serving as a heart and transplant surgeon. He founded and previously led a Specialized Thoracic Adapted Recovery (STAR) Team in Washington, DC, and his research in organ transplantation aims to save lives. He also taught at the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and as an adjunct professor of surgery at Howard University School of Medicine. He somehow found time to serve as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow and was a visiting scholar at the Congressional Budget Office. Not content with just practicing an extremely demanding form of surgery he expanded his horizons

yet again, participating in the Harvard Medical School Writers’ Workshop and Yale Writers’ Conference. He created The Art of Human Care book series, and wrote several best-selling books, including Gifts of the Heart. According to Dr. Tetteh, his last assignments in the military were among his best. During a twoyear assignment as the Command Surgeon for the National Defense University, Tetteh earned an MS in national security strategy with a concentration in artificial intelligence with the National War College. His tour provided him an opportunity to travel to 16 countries within a year, including trips to Jordan, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, and Israel. He subsequently served as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer for the Navy and was then recruited to serve as the Warfighter Health Mission Chief for the Department of Defense Joint Artificial Intelligence Center at the Pentagon. After retiring from the Navy last August, Dr. Tetteh reflects on what to do next. Ever the planner, he has written a mission statement: “To inspire, to serve, to heal, to teach, to lead, and to create.” He adds, “I want to make an impact and I want to be an inspiration — whether it be an inspiration of someone saying ‘I read your book’ or a student saying ‘I heard you lecture and you made me think a certain way because of what you said.’” He sold his STAR Teams (heart and lung transplant) practice but will continue to work in heart and lung transplantation. He plans to bring a Nautical Bowls franchise, a healthy, quick-service restaurant serving acai bowls and superfoods, to Maryland. He is working on a new book with Forbes called Smarter Healthcare with AI. He intends to stay active on the three boards he currently serves on: The David Lynch Foundation, Mentoring in Medicine, and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. Recognizing that it is necessary to keep healthy himself while serving others, he has always kept fit. To date, he has finished 24 marathons – including the recent Boston Marathon – and completed his first half-distance IRONMAN over the summer. He is now training for a full-distance IRONMAN. All bets are on that he accomplishes this goal with a flourish!

A T H E R A PI ST ’ S W NE YEA R’ S OU The new year is an ideal time to reboot our minds to embrace the challenges and joys of the next 12 months. We checked in with Jackie Aston, a licensed therapist in Washington, DC and Maryland, for her ideas on getting our heads in shape. She says her clients, mostly millennial professionals, come to her with “difficulty adjusting to life situations and anxiety about having anxiety.” Aston explains that coping with anxiety requires accepting that it’s part of being human.

Jackie Aston therapist
Aston has been in the mental health field for over a decade. She earned her master’s degree at the University of Maryland Baltimore and trained by working with eating disorder clients, one of her specialties. She is also trained in Crucible Therapy, which is integrated treatment for relationship problems. As principal of Clarity and Growth Therapy, she offers therapy to individuals, corporations, and couples dealing with relationship issues, difficulty with life transitions, and career stress. Aston tells us that one of the issues individuals and couples face is conflict avoidance. “Counseling can help individuals or couples learn how to better collaborate, instead of being combative.” A question Aston often hears around the New Year: how do I change my unhealthy habits such as spending too much time on social media or overeating? “Pleasurable activities such as eating food, watching T.V., sleeping, using social media, and having sex, aren’t bad,” Aston says “It’s about developing a healthy relationship with them and learning to tolerate our uncomfortable feelings.” Therapy can help improve your mental health and strengthen your relationships. This new year, Aston reminds us: “Dealing with your anxieties and relationship issues will help you gain more confidence and self-respect.”

THE NBA ASSISTANT COACH JOSEPH BLAIR COUNTS HIS BLESSINGS.

Washington Wizards’ assistant coach Joseph “JB” Blair eagerly shares his heartfelt life lessons with up-and-coming athletes who seek out his guidance and mentorship. Proudly wearing the
barrel filled with blessings, and if I hoard them the water becomes stagnant and unusable. Constantly giving blessings out to others, nourishes both me and others.”
“CONSTANTLY GIVING BLESSINGS OUT TO OTHERS, NOURISHES BOTH ME AND OTHERS.” moniker “Vegan Coach,” he feels a strong sense of spirituality and gratitude for his many blessings, as well as a strong obligation to give back – to his players, to children who want to follow in his footsteps, and to his community. “I want young athletes to understand that the road I traveled is the road I paved on my own and that they can’t copy it; everyone’s path is different and unique,” explains Blair, who formerly played with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Harlem Globetrotters. He spent his career as a power forward and center. After several other coaching stints, he joined the Washington Wizards for the 2021–22 season. “Becoming who you want to become requires consistency, diligence, putting in the work every single day, and maintaining your focus,” he adds. “I have this big imaginary water
FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Blair’s initial love for basketball, and now for coaching, is all about being a positive role model for the next generation. “For me, this is being part of something greater than myself. No one person can do anything; it’s a team effort to make sure everyone puts in work together,” he says. “My love for the game and coaching is the same; camaraderie and competition.” For Blair, it all starts with the understanding that none of us can succeed on our own. “As a player, I loved it when I became better, stronger, could jump higher or run a little faster,” he explains. “As a coach when I see those things in our players, when that light switch turns on and it all clicks together, and seeing your team work collectively as a unit, and become a family, it’s an amazing sensation.”

HOW THE ‘VEGAN COACH’ THRIVES
As an effective leader, Blair’s worldview is rooted in his deep concern for all living things, creating a more sustainable future, and “conscious living.” “I understand that every decision I make will affect someone else,” he says. “If we can start living that way and show love and compassion toward not just those like us, but those who are unlike us, not just in our diet but in our everyday lives, the better it is for all of humanity.” As a proponent of a vegan lifestyle, he frequents local vegan restaurants, including Elizabeth’s Gone Raw, DC Vegan, and PLNT Burger. He also has a few favorite go-to holiday recipes, including chickpea ceviché and Mexican-style tacos topped with delicious homemade salsa.
A SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP
After playing basketball in Italy for six years, Blair formed a relationship with legendary designer Giorgio Armani. The two hit it off right away, and before he knew it Armani offered to design and create Blair’s tuxedo and his wife’s wedding gown in what turned out to be an extremely generous gift.

“EVERY SINGLE DAY HOLDS AT LEAST ONE OPPORTUNITY THAT WILL HELP ME GROW.”
He still recalls the 2005 fitting with awe. “The next wedding that he did after mine was Tom Cruise’s, so I was super taken aback,” Blair says. “I remember his assistant telling me, ‘You don’t know how many famous people call him all the time, wanting him to design their stuff, and he says no.’ So, it was such an honor!”
JUMPING OUT OF BED EVERY DAY
When it comes to appreciating his personal and professional life, Blair practices a five-second rule after his alarm goes off. “Within five seconds I am out of bed, saying good morning to God and getting my day started,” he continues. “It’s the thought of what opportunities that day holds for me. I know every day holds at least one opportunity that will help me grow, change my life, or help me change the lives of the people around me,” he says. “What more could you ask for?”

Autism Ally Group (AAG) is a local, nonprofit organization that helps families and individuals affected by autism and other intellectual developmental disabilities. In the words of CEO Ike Ogbuebile: “Our focus is to provide resources and support in any way we can to help them attain independence in the community.” It started when Elizabeth Ucheya, the founder and CEO of Renoxx Caregivers, a for-profit licensed home and community-based provider caring for children and adults, heard stories from families and caregivers of the challenges they faced when
children had graduated from the school system and had to return tablets and other tools that helped them navigate their environment. With this background and her experience as a consultant, she decided the best way to fill that gap was to form a nonprofit. Two years ago she reached out to Ike Ogbuebile (AAG’s first CEO) for help based on his years of experience in repositioning Organizations. Today AAG helps over 100 families every month through its various programs. 80% percent of the money donated goes directly to these programs. They are: CONTINUED >

The Food Distribution Program is designed to address special dietary needs of the neurodivergent communities and educate their families about healthier food choices. AAG partners with One Acre Farm and KITE Realty to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those facing food insecurity. The Respite Funding Program enlists licensed agencies to take over a caregiver’s duties for a few days, providing them with a rest period. (Eligible to those not receiving Medicare or Medicaid). Ome-Nma (Make Me Feel Good) is a self-esteem-building program, that partners with occupational therapists who help individuals prepare for sensory-related services and identify companies specializing in adaptive clothing and footwear.
Employment Readiness Services is a cornerstone of all AAG’s programs. In addition to helping place individuals in job positions, the team works with Rehabilitation Services and a network of community businesses to create a good fit for their population. Their assistance continues with on-the-job support for both the employer and employee. Caregiver and Family Empowerment supports caregivers and families of neurodivergent individuals. Services include monthly peer-to-peer mentoring support. According to Ike, “This support system helps reassure parents that they are not alone on this journey.” Conversations might be as simple as suggestions from barbers and dentists.

HEAD TO PALM SPRINGS FOR A VACATION THAT WILL LEAVE YOU RESTED AND REJUVENATED.

M UST SE E | TRAVEL
Nestled at the base of the rugged San Jacinto Mountain Range, Palm Springs has for over a century been luring well-heeled visitors drawn to its vibrant cultural scene, stunning natural beauty, therapeutic mineral springs and mid-century architecture. While its reputation as a lively party town dates back to its early days as a desert playground for Hollywood’s rich and famous, these days Palm Springs radiates a healthier vibe. Owing to its hot locale in the sunbaked desert, summers in Palm Springs are relatively quiet, but from milder months November to April this popular desert oasis flourishes. Tourists and seasonal residents return, shops and restaurants fling open their doors and downtown comes alive with people shopping in the galleries and boutiques and dining at the many upscale eateries that line Palm Canyon Drive, the city’s main thoroughfare. Grab a healthy salad and a smoothie to go at Palm Greens Café or enjoy a romantic meal at Farm, a charming country-chic bistro that sources seasonal ingredients from local farmers (reservations required!). The city’s annual calendar is filled with world-class sporting and cultural events including the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, tennis and golf
tournaments, and Modernism Week which celebrates the area’s treasure trove of meticulously preserved mid-century architecture and all things ‘mod.’ For the active set, Palm Springs provides a wide array of attractions and activities. Runners, walkers, joggers and hikers can choose from a vast network of well-maintained trails on Mt. San Jacinto, easily accessible from the city center. The nearby Indian Canyons wilderness offers access to the ancestral home of the native Agua Caliente Indians—the area’s earliest inhabitants who arrived in the valley over 8,000 years ago. Hikers can trek through verdant oases of 80-foot fan palms, past dramatic rock formations and beneath majestic waterfalls as they explore the sacred canyons. Those seeking a more “elevated” outdoor experience can head over to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks passengers 2.5 miles to the summit at 8,500 feet above the desert floor. From there, you’ll have access to more than 50 miles of well-marked trails and 14,000 acres of pristine alpine forests. Just remember to dress appropriately because temperatures at the summit can be 30 to 40 degrees cooler than in town. Coachella Valley are a golfer’s paradise. While many of the 100-plus area courses are private, there are plenty open to the public, including those at the world-famous Indian Wells Golf Resort which offers two championship set-ups with spectacular views of the nearby mountains, and are rated among the top public-access courses in the country. When you’re ready to unwind, head to the luxurious Spa at Sec-he, recently opened by the Agua Caliente Indian tribe on a site directly above the hot mineral springs that gave the city its name. Enjoy the facility’s cryotherapy chamber, float pods, salt caves and saunas, and finish it all off with a soak in a private mineral bath that draws water directly from the hot springs, the area’s original “tourist attraction.” Whether your idea of the perfect vacation involves recreating in the pristine outdoors, indulging in leisure, or immersing yourself in the history and culture of your destination, a visit to the desert oasis that is Palm Springs will leave you mindful, rejuvenated and eager to return.
Hiking the Indian Canyons trails takes visitors through groves of native California fan palms which grow up to 60 feet and can live up to 100 years.

the BENEFITS OF PLANT-BASED EATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.
48
EAT R IGH T | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows to you consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!
TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.
