Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
I would like to send a special Happy Father’s Day to my business partner Jess Bousa along with photographer Jack Hartzman whom we have worked together since the inception of Potomac Lifestyle. They are valued colleagues and friends along with Tony Powell, Ryan Corvello, Glen Cox, and Ben Fischer -- all great examples of amazing fathers that both balance work with family, much like PLM’s featured person this month, John Carlson.
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smiles can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s physicality can be challenging
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say — thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

For professional athletes, life can be a balancing act as they focus on competing in their sport and at the same time try to allow for a family life at home -- just ask Tom Brady! For the Washington Capitals’ number one defenseman and alternate captain John Carlson, his hockey career is an example of dealing with unforeseen challenges that have impacted both his team and his personal life.
Carlson, 33, was born in Massachusetts and raised in New Jersey. He says hockey has always been in his blood: “My dad played Division 3 hockey at Framingham State and I grew up having a passion and obsession with the game.” John played high school hockey with his older brother Andrew for one year, then his brother went on to play in college.
He says he has always been competitive in everything: “Whether in school or sports, I had a burning desire inside to compete no matter what it was for – the competitive side of me is important for me as a human being.”
Carlson has spent his entire NHL career as a defenseman for the Capitals. He was selected by the
Capitals in the 2008 NHL entry draft and made his NHL debut in 2009. From 2010 through 2022 Carlson played regularly except for an injury in late 2015, but he still scored 39 points by the end of the 2015-2016 season. In 2018, the veteran blue-liner was key to the Washington Capitals’ first-ever Stanley Cup championship. His playing record continued to stand out as he became the first Capitals’ defenseman to reach 600 NHL points in 2022.
The real challenge for Carlson and the Capitals came on December 23, 2022 when he suffered one of the worst injuries in NHL history: a 90-mph slap shot hit him directly in the head, sidelining him for three months.
As Carlson later described it, he felt like he was hit by lightning. He realizes how fortunate he was that his injuries weren’t worse. As any bystander can attest, hockey is a tough sport and it’s easy to forget how much of a risk players take just stepping out onto the ice. Unfortunately for his team, when he was injured the Caps were in a playoff position in the midst of an impressive 11-2-2 games.
Carlson’s injury marked a turning point of the season; it was the first time in eight years that the Caps did not go to the playoffs for the Stanley Cup.
To get back in the game he started riding a stationary bike and lifting light weights, gradually working with the team’s skating coaching to ramp up the intensity until his final return to the ice.
Carlson shone in his comeback game against the Chicago Blackhawks, recording two points after picking up an assist on a goal and scoring his own goal – his ninth – of the 2022-23 season.
At home Carlson and his wife Gina are parents to three young boys – Lucca, Rudy, and Sawyer, and are expecting their fourth child (a girl) in early June. He reflects that “in my line of work I am gone a lot in terms of being out of town, but I can be very flexible on the days I am home and I try to be as present as I can.” He adds that the constantly shifting scenario of being home, say, for the summer months, and then being absent again is challenging. He is quick to credit his wife Gina: “She is unbelievable in how she is able to maintain the household and keeps everything together in the midst of my erratic schedule.”
Needless to say Carlson and the Capitals are looking forward to a healthier and more successful season ahead.
Whether designing a new piece of jewelry or repairing a beloved family antique, jewelry is personal to Aras Uslanian, the founder and owner of Aras Jewelry in Rockville. His philosophy for his business is that his store goes beyond just selling to people – “We work with them, and our ultimate goal is to make them happy.”
This is evident when a customer first enters the unpretentious shop, which Aras and Leslie Schwab, his associate, proudly call “a working studio.” Leslie often meets shoppers who know they want a one-of-a-kind piece and helps guide their design experience in jewelry creation.
Aras then takes over with a multi-step-process that begins with a Computer-Aided Design (CAD), a 3D digital model used in modern jewelry design. The CAD is used to 3D print a wax
model which is then cast into a precious metal. Aras collaborates with and involves the customer throughout the entire design process.
Aras prides himself that at his store all work is done in his facility, whether it be polishing, restringing, repairing watches, or any other necessary work on jewelry.
Jewelry is personal for Aras because of his background; growing up in Turkey with his Armenian family, he started working in the summer for his uncle’s jewelry store. His first foray into jewelry design came from creating a linked bracelet from a silver vase of his mother’s. After immigrating to the U.S., Aras worked in jewelry for nine years before opening his own store in 1987 with his sister, Zepur (Laura) Uslanian. Word of mouth from happy customers expanded his clientele, his business to a bigger building in 1995 and, later, to include Leslie.
Leslie has been in the jewelry business for 26 years; with a degree in fine arts, she went on to jewelry design and finally worked in retail. Leslie joined Aras eight years ago and is an invaluable member of his team.
Both have stories to recount of unique designs. Aras once created a pendant of a beloved husband’s fingerprint for his widow to wear, and another in the shape of the Star of David with a shamrock center signifying the marriage of a Jewish groom and Irish bride.
Not until 2001 did Aras discover his most intimate connection to jewelry. Tracing back nearly 100 years ago, his great-grandfather designed a ring as a twentieth anniversary gift for his wife inscribed with their initials and the words “this too shall pass,” a message of hope for the then persecuted Armenians to look forward to happiness and prosperity in the future to come.
REGROUPING WITH THE GUYS?
WE’VE PLANNED YOUR NEXT NIGHT OUT!
ARTICLE BY RACHEL ERSKINE OF @RAYCHILLYCHOWSWhile ladies love having their GNOs, or “girls night out,” we all know men love their version of that as well. So here’s why you should take your next “guys night out” to Bacchus of Lebanon in Bethesda.
The restaurant was recently renovated and added an enclosed heated patio. When remodeling, restaurant owner Zaid Barsoom says he wanted to differentiate his restaurant and “find a form of entertainment that was unlike anywhere else in the area.”
What better way to fit the Middle Eastern theme than a belly dancer? Performances are on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8:30PM, and if you’re lucky, you may be called to participate and dance with her.
Bacchus of Lebanon has a wide selection of whiskey, Bourbon, beer, cocktails, wine, and more to get the night started. Are you brave enough to try the traditional Arak Ksara? A Lebanese favorite, the cocktail is made with grapes and aniseed. And for the most important part, let’s get to the food.
Bacchus offers a variety of Middle Eastern halal plates including lamb, veal, beef, chicken, salmon, and vegetarian options.
Zaid says the “Warm mezze, hummus, Shrimp or Drummets, Soujok,” are some of the fan favorite appetizers, and the “Lamb Chops, Veal Chop, Variety Kabob, Branzino” for the main dish.
So next time you gather the guys, plan your dinner at Bacchus, sit at the trendy bar or outdoor patio, stay to watch the belly dance show, then bar hop to your favorite sports dive to keep the night going!
From Brooklyn to Bethesda, Beyond Measure Custom CCO Matthew Plotner found his calling and love of tailoring during his years as an opera singer, citing the confidence on stage that came from a perfectly fitting suit. He hopes to bring that same feeling to his clients. “When something is made for you and only you, it’s a feeling unlike any other,” said Plotner who was previously at the helm of Ralph Lauren’s Made to Measure program. Beyond Measure is committed to using 100% natural cotton fabric milled in Italy and Switzerland in all of their garments to ensure maximum comfort and longevity. The entire process from start to finish is fully custom with each client able to develop their own personal palette of fabric, lining, and buttons.
Christopher Schafer Clothier is located inside a historical 1800s era building originally made for copper smiths and wagon builders, they provide a wide range of custom clothing from suits and jackets to shirting and neckwear. Schafer, born and raised in Baltimore, learned to design in the world class shops of London. Schafer’s approach is to help his clients develop an interchangeable, daily wardrobe of clothing made of the highest quality fabric; he is breaking away from the norms of a traditional tailoring practice to foster a
more welcoming environment for those both new to and familiar with the bespoke world alike.
Hand-picked fabric programs are the specialty at Commonwealth Proper, where clients are offered a curated selection ranging from deadstock vintage to luxury from industry staples like Prada and Loro Piana. These fabrics create an intentional fitting experience, says owner Craig Artheur Von Schroder, where each client’s vision is accentuated through the lens of the brand. Speaking to their emphasis on sourcing, they’re one of the few luxury brands in partnership with Swiss fabric maker Schoeller Textiles who offer specialty technical fabrics typically used in outdoor spaces. With its waterproofing, windproofing and reinforced construction, what results is a garment that can be worn repeatedly without worry.
Milo Andres specializes in catering to every individual’s personal style, each suit is a unique creation made for its wearer to look and feel their best. In a made to measure suit you’re getting the knowledge and skill of a bespoke atelier at a fraction of a cost, but with the same opportunity to choose your ideal fabric, pocket, and fitting details. Milo Andres hopes to soon evolve offering specialty service client visits across the country in hot-spots like Miami, New York, and Los Angeles.

On the first weekend in April, folks gathered at Olney’s Lone Oak Farm Brewing Company to commemorate its namesake, a majestic 200-plus-year-old white oak that had recently fallen to heavy winds. The tree had been a symbol of strength for the three-year-old farm and brewery. As they raised glasses of “Lone Oak Lager” and “All the Smoke” brews (using malt smoked with wood from the tree), co-founders Chris and Charlie Miller, with Ralph and Ryan Mollet, were heartened by the community’s support and the knowledge that something good would come from the loss — they’d be repurposing the wood for use across the property, making tables, chairs, and barrels to age their craft brews.
Community support is not uncommon for the family-friendly brewery; it’s what inspired the Millers and Mollets to open the farm to begin with. “Our goal was to create a place for young families to get away from computers, cell phones and TVs, and enjoy nature and a nice atmosphere and product simultaneously,” Charlie says. Their scenic 28-acre farm sees up to 1,500 visitors on a busy Saturday — as they like to say, it’s “a farm with a brewery,” not the other way around. Rare for area breweries, barley is grown on-site in the “ground to glass” operation. It’s a process that visitors will get the chance to view up close at the farm’s Harvest Fest this June.
“It will be a visual experience,” Chris says. “You’ll get to see the machines working in the field, taking the grain out, putting it into trucks, and eventually it will end up in the beer people are drinking while getting to watch this. It’s a true harvest fest, not just in name but in practice.” The free event will feature food trucks, live music, a farmer’s market, and wine and spirits from local partners including Doc Waters Cidery, Two Story Chimney Ciderworks, Twin Valley Distillers, and 61 Vineyard.
They’ve also partnered with the Special Olympics of Maryland for a “Pint-Sized Plunge” in July, a kid-friendly summer version of a polar plunge that will feature ice buckets with prizes inside, raffles, music, and more. The goal is to raise as much money as they can for the thousands of Special Olympics athletes that live in their state.
“We’ve been blessed with this property, with our community, with all of the business advances we’ve been able to make during hard times,” Chris says. “We opened during Covid and made it through the dark days. We love to give back because we’ve been given so much.”

In a perfect world, we would eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and sleep eight hours a night, allowing us to avoid chronic disease and injury, and to live long, fulfilling lives. But the reality is, at some point, we all experience aches and ailments that interfere with our productivity and compromise our general wellbeing. Luckily, there are steps you can take to tilt the scales in your favor for a long, healthy life.
Dr. Michael D. Lewis, MD, an expert on men’s health issues and the brain who runs a concierge medical practice in Potomac, emphasizes the importance of maintaining optimal testosterone levels in order to counter the most common symptoms of aging in men. When working with a new patient, Dr. Lewis does a thorough blood analysis. Then, based on the results he prescribes a combination of exercise (weightlifting, strength, and interval training) and targeted nutritional therapy that covers diet and often includes fish oil and other supplements in very specific dosages. “It’s a travesty to approach this unscientifically,” he says. “Our patients are generally high-achievers, and when they begin to lose that edge they notice it. We provide a great way for them to regain that edge.” braincare.center
According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 25 million adult Americans suffer from chronic pain. Too often, treatment involves highly-addictive opioid painkillers or invasive surgery. With offices in Potomac and Fairfax, the team at Spine and Pain Clinics of North America (SAPNA) has over 20 years of experience in the treatment of pain brought on by injuries, arthritis, migraine headaches, degenerative spine disease, and other maladies. Dr. Majid Ghauri, MD, and his team work with your primary physician to identify the root cause of your pain and tailor a
customized plan that employs the most cutting-edge treatments. “Rather than temporarily masking the pain with prescription pills,” says Dr. Ghauri, “we develop long-lasting treatment plans that aim for complete pain relief.” sapnamed.com
Physical therapy (PT) is an integral component of orthopedic medicine that helps you to build strength and flexibility that aids in recovery from injuries and other conditions while helping to prevent future injuries. It is ideal for treating arthritis, back, and neck pain, and sports injuries like tendonitis and strains. It is also ideal for patients recovering from surgery. It can help reduce pain while improving mobility, balance, strength, and flexibility. The clinic at Metro Orthopedics & Sports Therapy (M.O.S.T.) can help you to live a healthier, more active, and painfree life. mostsportsmedicine.com
With three locations in Silver Spring and Washington, DC, Stretch Workz has been providing professional partner-assisted stretch therapy since 2014. Unlike traditional massage, Stretch Workz’ therapeutic protocol is intended to correct imbalances, relieve long-term or temporary pain, and realign the body. Whether you’re an elite athlete preparing for competition or a desk jockey who is beginning to suffer from the tell-tale signs of aging, consistent stretching can help reduce stress and anxiety and generally provide you with more energy. During your visit, a stretch therapist will assess your joint mobility and flexibility before putting you through a total-body customized stretching session (25, 55, or 90 minutes) that addresses your specific needs. “We’re trying to help everyone to feel better, to feel happier with themselves,” says managing partner Eric North. “Because at the end of the day, a flexible body means a flexible mind.” stretchworkz.com
