Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. We each put so much thought, effort and ourselves into our homes that it was endearing to hear from all our partners, including Goldberg Group and Persiano Gallery, the emphasis on the heart and people at the center of it. Our warm congratulations to Dave Goldberg and Louis T. Donatelli for the legacy they've built in Potomac. We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. The Lido Civic Club of Washington, D.C. awarded Louis “Lou” T. Donatelli its 2022 Man of the Year Award on November 19th at its annual Past Presidents Night Gala. Richard DiPippo, the president of the club, described Mr. Donatelli as “an outstanding American of Italian descent who has been a dynamic business leader who has served this community via local charitable and industry organizations.” Mr. Donatelli started his professional career in the stock brokerage and investment banking business. In 1973, Lou turned his focus to real estate, having formed Donatelli & Klein, Inc. and First Potomac to invest in and develop real estate. Donatelli & Klein, Inc., now

Lou was born in Washington and lived in Potomac for over forty years. He and his wife Ann have been married for 62 years, raised four children, and have 11 grandchildren. As a strong supporter of Catholic education, he served on the Board and received the President’s Medal from his alma mater, St. John’s College High School. An alumnus of Villanova University he served on its Board of Trustees for nine years, was a member of the Executive Committee, and received the President’s Medal. Mr. Donatelli served on the Boards of Directors of Gonzaga College High School, The United Service Organization (USO), The Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C., and the Yellow Ribbon Fund. He is a member of The Sovereign Military Order of The Knights of Malta and is affiliated with Associated Catholic Charities. Recognition of his many civic contributions include the Catholic Businessman of the Year Award in 2009 and, in 2013, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Italian American Foundation for Contributions in Business. An avid golfer, reader, and gardener Lou is most proud of a sports bar in Washington, D.C., named in his honor: Lou’s City Bar, which he frequents for a burger and beer on game days. Nurit Coombe and Alex Martinez are rewriting the real estate rulebook. As managing partners of The Agency DC, a residential real estate brokerage based in North Bethesda whose net sales were over $326 million last year, they constantly juggle emotions and hard data to sell homes and help clients. This goodwill was started by Mauricio Umansky, who launched The Agency in Los Angeles as a

boutique luxury firm with global reach; with over 60 offices worldwide and featured on international television shows, including Million Dollar Listing LA, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and the brand-new Netflix series, Buying Beverly Hills. On their bond with Umansky, “We’ve been best friends from the hello,” says Nurit; Umansky has worked with Alex and Nurit since 2019. Their trust is built on mutually held convictions in pursuing success while remaining down to earth in an ever-changing business. Umansky agrees, saying, “Nurit and Alex caught our attention with what they have been able to achieve, and we know they will be a great steward of The Agency brand and culture.” As an ominous cloud has hovered over the economy and housing market, Nurit and Alex remain optimistic about real estate, particularly in Potomac. They recently hosted a seminar for 54 potential homeowners

on the market’s outlook for 2023 based on number crunching with economic experts. “The real estate market has surely slowed down in many areas nationwide, including this one,” says Nurit, “But if you are looking to sell, you are still sitting on top of the market as prices are 38% higher than pre-pandemic pricing.” “And if you are a buyer,” adds Alex, “currently, there are great mortgage programs to lower your rate. This market allows you to take your time so that you can negotiate for better terms. You can always refinance later when rates go down again.” Both Nurit and Alex agree you should “marry the house, but date the mortgage.” Meanwhile, the partners flex their creative side to develop a customized marketing strategy that conjures the spirit of a client’s home. “Every house has a story to tell,” Nurit explains, “Buying or selling a house is one of the biggest decisions in life. It’s a very emotional experience.”

ARTICLE BY MARIE ROBEY WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH REZVANI Calling Persiano Gallery “just a furniture store” is almost like calling Picasso “just a painter.” This high-end design center’s offerings range from a selection of furniture and handmade rugs to lighting fixtures, art, wall-to-wall carpeting, floor selections, window treatments, mirrors, interior design consultation and cleaning and repair of rugs and chandeliers. Customers can wander the two floors of the Rockville store where the furniture they sell ranges from contemporary, transitional to traditional. Brands such as Century, Vanguard, Leathercraft and more are represented in the store. The gallery’s owners and founders, John and Laura Hashempour, come to the homes of clients upon request and assess the family’s needs and wishes. They then make suggestions on furniture and accessories tailored to the individual living spaces and lifestyle needs of the owner; they especially enjoy updating. John Hashempour’s background and experience in many different areas have all played a role in his expertise as a design consultant. He started as a child in Iran watching and helping his father, who was a master tailor and clothing manufacturer. He learned how to cut fabric and even designed dresses. There he also learned about textures and colors. After the Revolution in Iran, he followed his older brother Reza to the U.S. in 1983. He and his younger brother, Ricky, opened a jewelry store in Gaithersburg – J&R Jewelers which is still operating today – where John

worked for thirteen years designing and repairing jewelry. “There, he was involved in every aspect of the business, which helped him become an integral part of the community.” After retiring from the jewelry business, John traveled to Mexico with his now wife, Laura Hashempour. He spent days visiting local shops of furniture makers and art owners. The quality of the art and furniture inspired him to open his own store in Maryland. Previous trips to Turkey and Italy helped refine his eye for quality furniture and color, textiles and materials. These travels, as well as working all those years designing and appraising jewelry, helped him see the detail necessary for interior design in the DMV market. With this as his background, Hashempour started with Persiano Rugs, selling rugs in the Kentlands – sourcing oriental rugs from a friend who owned a Persian rug factory in Iran. Later he launched Persiano Gallery to offer the DMV area clientele handmade rugs plus furniture, chandeliers, and art. Persiano Gallery can now be found in three locations: Gaithersburg, Premium Outlets in Hagerstown and their new flagship store in Rockville with its bi-level, 40,000 square foot showroom. This new store took over the space of the previous occupant, Sheffield Furniture Outlet, on Rockville Pike. John Hashempour is particularly proud that so many of his customers have been coming to him for over 20 years, since he first opened his business. Hashempour’s 24-7 work at the gallery includes everything from overseeing furniture shipments to maintaining floor displays. He has even expanded upon his design skills to development, having bought and renovated a historic hotel in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania that he then helped turn into an assisted care living facility. The Hashempour’s passion for design shines when helping people transform their outdated homes or assisting new homeowners to fully furnish a fresh abode.

In honor of Women’s History Month, let’s take a look at the outstanding women who are now taking elected office in Maryland. When it comes to electing women to political office, the Free State has had a less than progressive record. Until last November, Maryland has never had a female comptroller, and it still had never had a female governor or attorney general. Currently there are no women in Maryland’s congressional delegation. However, a number of qualified and experienced women were elected and are hoping that they can play a role in “changing the tide” to see more women succeed in elective office in the not-toodistant future. Here are a few of these leaders:

ARUNA MILLER, LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR Aruna Miller, the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Wes Moore, was elected lieutenant governor of Maryland when the Moore-Miller ticket won the general election last November.

Miller holds the distinction of being the first South Asian woman elected lieutenant governor in the United States as well as the first Asian American lieutenant governor and the first immigrant to hold statewide office in Maryland. A transportation engineer, she worked for more than 25-years in Montgomery County. She previously served two terms in the House of Delegates, representing District 15, as the first Indian-American woman in the Maryland legislature. Miller and her college sweetheart, David Miller, have three adult daughters.

BROOKE LIERMAN, ATTORNEY, MARYLAND COMPTROLLER Brooke Lierman, a civil rights attorney, is Maryland’s first female comptroller and is the first woman independently-elected to state office in Maryland without being connected to a male candidate. As a delegate she served on several committees, including the Appropriations Committee and on the Environment and Transportation Committee. As the state’s chief financial officer, Lierman has vowed to work to help Maryland residents achieve financial resilience and advance policy priorities such as climate sustainability. She is married and the mother of two young children, and lives in the Fells Point area of Baltimore.

MELONY GHEE GRIFFITH, MEMBER OF THE MARYLAND SENATE Melony G. Griffith currently represents District 25, Prince George’s County, in the Maryland State Senate. In 2020, Senator Griffith become the first African-American woman elected as President Pro Tempore for the Maryland Senate. In this role, Griffith serves as the leader of the Senate chamber in the absence of Senate President Bill Ferguson. In addition to serving as President Pro Tempore, Senator Griffith also serves as the Chair of the Budget and Taxation Committee’s Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. She is a valued member of the Maryland Senate senior leadership team, providing input and guidance on major policy initiatives.

Changing the tide to see more women succeed in elected office in Maryland. APRIL FLEMING MILLER, MEMBER OF THE MARYLAND HOUSE OF DELEGATES April Fleming Miller represents District 4 in Frederick County. An optometrist, Miller served two terms on the Frederick County Board of Education. She has said that direction of education is one of the biggest concerns in Frederick and she hopes to bring her experience on the board of education to work with other delegates in considering the impact on students and teachers. She would like the General Assembly to pause implementing the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, a comprehensive K-12 education reform bill passed in 2021, a plan she believes — because it was pre-COVID — doesn’t reflect the changes in education in the past several years. As a Republican she is in the minority in Annapolis, but believes that there is common ground with both Republicans and Democrats and there is much they can accomplish together. Locally, the recent election was historic for the Montgomery County Council. The county council, which plays a key role in planning and development decisions, now has six new members who are all women and this is the first time in its history that the council will be governed by a female majority. This is also the first time that the body is expanding from nine to 11 members.

MARILYN BALCOMBE, PHD, MEMBER OF THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL Marilyn Balcombe won election to represent District 2 on the County Council. Her years of experience as a community activist

in upper Montgomery County included a stint as the President and CEO of the GaithersburgGermantown Chamber of Commerce, service to the Montgomery County Small Business Recovery Workgroup and service to the Upcounty COVID Community Committee. A strong advocate for building the Germantown Library and Town Center Park, she also served as the first executive director of Germantown’s BlackRock Center for the Arts. She earned a degree in accounting and a Ph.D. in organizational psychology. She and husband Jonathan are parents to daughter Emily, a graduate of Northwest High School in Germantown.

LAURIE-ANNE SAYLES, MEMBER OF THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL Laurie-Anne Sayles is a first-generation JamaicanAmerican. Born and raised in Maryland she is the first person of color elected to the Gaithersburg City Council. She ran successfully for an at-large seat on the Montgomery County Council on what she calls a “S.M.A.R.T.” platform, an acronym for a policy of strengthening learning for students, creating more affordable housing, advancing local food production, revitalizing the economy, and finding better solutions for transportation. As a representative of northern Montgomery County she represents a change in leadership from the previous council, where at-large delegates were always from the down county area. As a young, single mother to her daughter, Sayles managed to graduate from high school, college and earn a master’s degree in public administration.

in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES

Brooke’s Pro Tip:

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen. Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
