business monthly A round-up of exciting news from local businesses.

Monica Delgado, Morazan Grocery

Jamie Kushner Blicher, Glitter Enthusiast

Sydney Rosenberg, Flex All Day

Monica G. Delgado, a University of Maryland Baltimore County alumnae, first generation Salvadoreña and current Mrs. Potomac, Maryland is the proud president and owner of Morazan Grocery II, Inc., a Latin grocery store and carry out located in the heart of Gaithersburg offering all Latin American products and delicious ready-to-eat dishes from El Salvador. The small, woman and minority-owned business has been successful for the past 24 years.

In 2016, before there was Glitter Enthusiast, there was just the artist Jamie Kushner Blicher alone with her art and seemingly too many IVF needles. Her art served as a welcome mat of sorts to begin tough conversations around her infertility journey. Today, Glitter Enthusiast’s mission is to educate, support, and empower all women, but especially the 1 in 4 who have their own infertility journeys to tell. Visit glitterenthusiast.com

It was only natural that Sydney Rosenberg combine her two loves with the creation of Flex All Day: fitness & fashion! As a self-proclaimed legging connoisseur, Sydney proudly wears her daily uniform while chauffeuring her two kids around town, trying all the coolest fitness spots in DC, MD & VA, and attempting to keep everything else running somewhat smoothly. The stars aligned when Flex All Day came to be. Sydney takes her job of bringing the best athleisure to the DC/Bethesda area very seriously. Visit flexallday.com

How to Avoid the Court at Death? When one thinks of completing an Estate Plan, the typical thought is the establishment of a Last Will and Testament. While a Last Will and Testament will distribute the assets of your estate according to your wishes, those assets will be subject to a process known as Probate. Probate is a procedure by which the Court or more specifically, the Register of Wills, supervises the admission of the Will to Probate, appointment of a Personal Representative and distribution of the assets to the beneficiaries. While there are various types of Probate, it typically requires petitions to the Court, notice to heirs and legatees, inventory, and accountings. While many individuals attempt to avoid Probate by creating joint accounts or adding the beneficiary to the deed, this often times results in unanticipated taxable gifts, the loss of step-up in basis at death, and most tragically family arguments. Probate can easily be avoided with the establishment of a Revocable Trust, which will allow assets to pass to the beneficiaries without Court supervision and, thus, less time and expense for the grieving family.

Fierce and Fabulous It’s been more than 50 years since Helen Reddy first sang, “I am woman. Hear me roar.” And nearly 40 years have passed since a perfume commercial introduced a woman who could “bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan.” The following five women are doing all that and much more. Each has achieved great professional success and all are moms who know that balancing a life full of competing demands does not require perfection but every now and then, some roaring may be in order.

FIVE ACCOMPLISHED WOMEN IN LAW, FINANCE AND REAL ESTATE REFLECT ON KEEPING LIFE AND WORK IN BALANCE ARTICLE BY LAURI GROSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACK HARTZMAN

Jennifer Chow

Team Leader at Long & Foster Potomac Village

Of the many hats Jennifer Chow wears, one is pink and furry. Well, not literally but, to some, she is known as the Energizer Bunny, and since she gets by on five hours of sleep, avoids caffeine, is a mom to three boys and works as a top area realtor, the nickname seems appropriate. Even during the 15 years Jennifer was an at-home mom, she remained extremely busy and involved in her kids’ classrooms, plus volunteer work and more. When her youngest was in first grade, she decided to pursue a real estate career. She is now team leader for the top-producing group at the Long & Foster Potomac Village Office, with many “top agent” and other honors under her belt.

“The great thing about real estate,” Jennifer says, “is its flexibility. I always tried to schedule appointments when they were in school,” referring to Nicholas - 23, Alex - 18, and Matthew - 14. “And I have a wonderful husband who, on weekends, would take the kids to their events,” while she was busy with open houses and showings on Saturdays and Sundays. This fall, Jennifer’s middle son heads to college so there will be just one child at home. “He is excited but he might not want all that attention,” Jennifer laughs. To other women considering a return to the workforce, Jennifer advises, “Working moms are strong. We can do it all…just maybe not all at the same time.”

Michelle P. Cooper Co-founder of XML-W

With a resume that includes attorney, author and financial advisor, and a backstory that includes becoming a widow with two toddlers, perhaps Michelle P. Cooper’s ability to gracefully handle change came from necessity. In her current role as Co-founder of XML-W, a division of XML Financial Group that focuses on the planning and financial needs of women, she advises her clients to take an active role in their financial lives by understanding their assets and liabilities as well as establishing a financial plan to help achieve their life goals. She also encourages women to stay in the workforce when they become parents. Maintaining a career, she says, “is so reassuring and such a confidence builder” and may become a necessity because, she adds, “you never know.” When Michelle lost her husband to suicide, she had been at Merrill Lynch for about nine years where, because of her solid track record and reputation, she was granted a measure of flexibility that allowed her to juggle the demands of being a working parent. When she remarried and gained three “bonus” children, she and her new husband, Paul, worked together to juggle five children and two careers. Along the way, she embraced her natural organization skills along with technology, from the calendar on her phone to grocery delivery apps to make it all work. Today, she tells her clients, “Don’t be afraid to get creative and ask [your employer] for flexibility to make life manageable.” Michelle’s now-grown kids have always known her as a working mom. She says, “They are proud to have a mom with a career. And that makes me smile.”

“Don’t be afraid to get creative and ask [your employer] for flexibility to make life manageable.”

Erin Kopelman

Partner at Lerch Early & Brewer

Erin Kopelman cites her “village” when reflecting on her ability to juggle parenthood with a high-powered career. “I’m one of the fortunate moms,” she says. “I am not juggling by myself. My husband is just as active with our daughter as I am, and my parents live nearby.” By age 34, Erin had become a partner at Lerch Early & Brewer, the firm where she practices divorce law. And when Erin asked her daughter to assess her mom’s ability to juggle work life and home life, the nine-year-old Emma responded, “You’re great. You don’t procrastinate. You just get it done.” Indeed, Erin credits her parents’ careers as Naval officers for her own disciplined and precise approach to tasks. “I don’t put things off,” she laughs. “I get up and work out on the elliptical or rower, or I take a walk or go paddle boarding with the family. And I try to get everything done before I go to sleep. It can be a struggle and I live and die by my calendar.” Being named on many “best of” lists and earning the moniker “super lawyer” by area bar associations and other groups, however, never out-shines her title of Mom. “I try to be present for the important things,” she says. “I’m sure when she’s older, Emma will tell me things I missed and I just want to be able to say that I did my best.”

Judyann Lee

Real-Estate Attorney at McMillan Metro, P.C. As a real-estate attorney and single mom of an 18-year-old son, Judyann Lee has seen her share of life’s transitions. “My mom was a huge help for me (raising my son). She was retired and she lives with me,” says Judyann, who is senior counsel at McMillan Metro, P.C. “My son, Matthew, was always supportive and helpful with my mom too,” she adds. “I’m sort of the sandwich generation, since I’m now taking care of my mom,” says Judyann, who explains that, despite her mom’s recent heart attack, they still enjoy taking long walks together. “She’s doing ok and is still pretty independent.” At the office, Judyann enjoys her work with developers. “It’s always fun to drive by Crown Farm or downtown Bethesda or Park Potomac and see the finished product and the vibrant communities and neighborhoods and know you had a part in making that happen.” As for anything she might have done differently along the way, Judyann says, “I would have been less hard on myself. I think moms tend to be hard on themselves and usually you’re giving 110% both at work and at parenting but you always feel like you are falling short. So, we need to really recognize all that we do and all that we are juggling.” CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / P OTO M AC

“My kids are happy and that, to me, is the most important part.”

As a trust and estate attorney at Oram & Moss, where she is a partner and owner, Lesley Moss considers the best part of her job to be her work with families. “If I have to take myself away from my family, at least I know I am helping other families as I plan for major life events like the loss of a loved one or the birth of a grandchild. It’s rewarding,” she says. With a 3-year-old daughter, Emilia, and a 5-year-old son, Logan, Lesley and her husband have no local family to rely on for an extra set of helping hands. Although Lesley says she did, technically, have a maternity leave, “as principal and owner of a business, you are never completely off,” she adds, as she recalls working from home with a newborn. “I remember nursing my son while being on a call with a client, whose spouse was dying, to discuss the estate and tax planning. Life goes on for other people and we have to be there for their family.” Despite all the challenges of juggling work and family, various magazines and organizations have named Lesley, “top wealth advisor,” “rising star” and more. She notes, “My kids are happy and that, to me, is the most important part.” Reflecting on how she makes it all work, she says, “You just do it and you make it happen. You figure it out. That’s what makes women so amazing: You continue to rise to the occasion.”

The Luxury of Laughter THE FOUNDER OF BRANDYWINE LIVING ON HER CAREER PATH AND THE IMPORTANCE OF LAUGHTER

ARTICLE BY LAURI GROSS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Brenda Bacon, Brandywine Living facility co-founder, President and CEO

Since 1996 when the first Brandywine Living facility opened, co-founder, President and CEO Brenda Bacon has added additional communities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. When two more Brandywine locations open early this summer, the total will be 32. Although each location has some local flair (such as clambakes at the Maryland location), each also adheres to Brenda’s exacting standards which helped establish the brand as a leader in luxury senior living. Earlier this year, Brenda was inducted into the American Seniors Housing Association’s Senior Living Hall of Fame. Just prior to that, she was recognized by Savoy Magazine as one of the 100 most influential Black members of public boards. (Brenda serves on the boards of Hilton Grand Vacations (NYSE: HGV), and FTI Consulting (NYSE: FCN.) And she was named by the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of their 2021 Women of Distinction.

“I walk in our buildings and I hear laughter and it’s wonderful. Family members see their mom and dad smile and laugh out loud. I have seen the look on people’s faces when they see that and there’s nothing like it.” — Brenda Bacon

Advice to working moms Brenda, whose two children are now grown, recalls the challenge of staying engaged in their lives and their education, while pursuing her professional ambitions. “Women sometimes try to find the roadmap to make the right decisions and we talk to other women about how they did it,” she says. “But it’s important for young women to choose their own path. If you make decisions too early, you could miss opportunities along the way to look around and see what’s developing and what you’re passionate about. I encourage women to figure out what makes them happy so they have a career that they enjoy every day.” Brenda’s path to Brandywine “I always had a need and a want to change things and impact people’s lives,” Brenda says. From working on healthcare issues in the 1970s with Congressman James Florio, to being on the management staff of a Philadelphia hospital and working on Florio’s gubernatorial campaign in the 1980s, Brenda became part of a team that built a skilled nursing facility in 1985. She later served as co-chair of the committee helping to transition the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for President Clinton. Finally, Brenda left government to start Brandywine, where she combined her skills and passion for helping others. Life at Brandywine Brenda created Brandywine as a place that, in addition to providing excellent care,

“feels like a home, where you have friends and neighbors, like the house where you raised your kids and you have a reason to get out of the bed, where you can enjoy the company of others and learn something new every day and age with dignity,” she says. When people are busy taking care of their elderly parents on their own, Brenda explains the relationship becomes transactional and focused on things like making sure mom took her pills. “They don’t expect to see mom or dad smile again,” she says. But at Brandywine, she adds, “I walk in our buildings and I hear laughter and it’s wonderful. Family members see their mom and dad smile and laugh out loud. I have seen the look on people’s faces when they see that and there’s nothing like it.” Brandywine Living Highlights: • Escapades for life: Movies, stage performances, karaoke, painting, exercise, watching sports, trivia, educational programs, cooking classes and more. • Reflections (for memory-care residents): Engagement to enhance independence, plus programs to celebrate each resident’s special interests and abilities, whether they are a gardener, a DIYer, gamer, artist, avid reader, story teller, knitter etc. • Serenade: A luxurious senior living experience that features a private butler, luxurious suites, concierge service, room service, private dining and more.

Team Nurit The Agency DC

Leading with Head and Heart ARTICLE BY CHRISTINE SHAPIRO

Nurit Coombe Leads Her Top-Producing Real-Estate Team with Intelligence and Love Mauricio Umansky and Nurit Coombe

Nurit Coombe

There’s a special gene required for members of Team Nurit at The Agency DC. According to Nurit Coombe, it equates to “Having a good heart!” Of course, team members need smarts, commitment, and drive, but above all else, the heart is where it’s at. “When you surround yourself with an amazing team that believes in you and vice-versa… and they have extra motivation for the job they are doing for our clients – then it’s not just a job – it’s so much more.” Clearly, it’s working, as The Agency DC has been ranked 14th among real estate teams nationwide by the Wall Street Journal and #1 in Maryland, with billions of dollars in real estate deals across the DMV. In 2021 alone, they closed over $300 million in sales with more than 585 transactions. Still, Nurit doesn’t measure her success by sales numbers. Instead, she focuses on people. It’s essential for her to keep her company “family-oriented, loving, and caring.” According to Nurit, you can’t lose focus of what is important, “being there for a buyer or seller every step of the way; to answer questions, to offer support, to give them everything they need. They are not just a client, they become part of our family.” In her native Israel, Nurit rose through the ranks of the Israeli Army to become the Director of Business Development for the Israeli Armament Development Authority, putting her strategic, analytic, and planning skills to good use. Today, she uses those same skills in her role as a top real estate professional. She gathers intelligence about homes coming on the market to remain at the top of her game. Knowing the area she serves is critical. “We offer refreshments at community meetings; we serve on boards in our own neighborhoods;

we throw parties, ice cream socials, and other fun events,” she explains. “I love parties, I love people, and I love being immersed in the community.” At weekly meetings, Nurit and her agents discuss the economy, inflation, the war in Ukraine, oil, the stock market, and more. “Being on top of the market and understanding every aspect is important,” she says, adding that she is one of only a few agents in the country certified to buy and sell real estate with cryptocurrency. Nurit regularly talks to builders, community leaders, lenders, insurance companies, government officials, and then shares what she learns at her monthly public seminars. The seminars (virtual, in-person, or hybrid), she says, “are for buyers, sellers, everyone.” Find the schedule at TeamNurit.com/events. Her latest accomplishment is bringing The Agency to D.C. Originating in Los Angeles and founded by Mauricio Umansky, it’s now the fastest-growing luxury real estate company nationwide. The founders of The Agency wanted to create a company that mattered, with a shared mission and passion, and Nurit immediately connected with the brand. “We believe in offering our clients a spirit of partnership, innovation, passion, and integrity, and they are the perfect fit,” she proclaims, “it’s amazing. I’ve never seen a company that is so on top of things and cares so much. Everyone welcomed us from every level, and Mauricio was right there - texting, calling, caring. He is a genuine, real, and wonderful person.” Mauricio feels the same way saying, “Nurit caught our attention with what she has been able to achieve in D.C., and we know she will be a great steward of The Agency brand and culture.” And with the power of The Agency behind her, there is no limit to her team’s future success.

For Nurit, family is everything

“For us, luxury isn’t about price; it’s about the experience. We’ve rekindled the lost art of white-glove service, being with The Agency means we can utilize their systems and provide extensive services for every one of our clients.” In keeping with The Agency’s philosophy, Nurit is committed to providing luxury service for every client. “For us, luxury isn’t about price; it’s about the experience. We’ve rekindled the lost art of white-glove service,” she explains,” being with The Agency means we can utilize their systems and provide extensive services for every one of our clients.” “We have everything they might need, right at our fingertips,” she adds, describing her access to national advertising campaigns, national social media platforms, marketing experts, designers, contractors, decorators, and more.

What’s ahead for this powerhouse businesswoman? Nurit says that 2022 will be a challenging year for the real estate market. She is already developing strategies and marketing plans to help her sellers and buyers maximize their profits and get the best deals while also understanding their needs. She’s also focusing on expanding her team and providing them with all the necessary tools to succeed. But most of all, she looks forward to helping her clients find their dream home, becoming a part of their story and developing a friendship for life.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS How Churchill High School clubs focused on helping women in business, computer science and politics are making a big impact

THE GIRLS OF CHURCHILL HIGH SCHOOL TA K I N G O N M A L E D O M I N AT E D I N D U S T R I E S

“It gives girls a place where they know they will be welcomed and encouraged to learn about computer science.” - Sonia Bhatia

Less than one-tenth of Fortune 500 companies are run by women. That concerns Luna Wang, the President of the Women in Business (WIB) club at Winston Churchill High School. “Throughout history, there has been significant gender inequality in the workplace…today, the gender gap is gradually narrowing,” Wang said. “Our club is committed to offering an environment that allows girls to explore career paths in business.” WIB, which hosts workshops and information sessions with industry professionals, is not the only club at Churchill helping women in traditionally male-dominated industries. Elizabeth Qiu leads Women in Politics (WIP). Her interest in politics stemmed from a politically-active music teacher who inspired her to learn more. “Our goal is to increase student involvement and awareness in politics, specifically for women,” Qiu said. “We launched an active blog…I also helped launch an active GroupMe community since the breakout of COVID and we still have it growing strong.” The club has had notable guest speakers including Montgomery County’s Student Member of the Board Hana O’Looney, State Delegate Lily Qi (a Churchill graduate), and former government official and business executive Amie Hoeber. Hoeber’s visit was arranged in collaboration between WIB and WIP. Sonia Bhatia is in charge of Girls Who Code (GWC), which started as a national push to get more women in computer science. Bhatia joined as a sophomore to meet others interested in coding. GWC plans to eventually expand to middle schools. “It gives girls a place where they know they will be welcomed and encouraged to learn about computer science,” Bhatia said. “I’ve learned the importance of problem-solving through coding and how working as a team is most helpful when trying to complete a project.”

Readers’ Pick, Best Dental Group Practice

Ask Dr. Katie! Why does Oral Health Matter? Companion animals have increasingly become considered primary members of our family. Periodontal disease can affect other parts of the pet’s body. If oral health is left unrecognized, this can impact the overall health and longevity of our pets. Because of this dental care is equally as important of a topic in the exam room as vaccines and heartworm preventative. The heart and liver are especially prone to developing inflammation from dental disease. There is evidence that dental disease is linked to cardiopulmonary diseases like endocarditis, according to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA). This evidence is supported by cultured bacteria from infected heart valves being the same as those also identified in the mouth. Similarly, diabetic dogs tend to have higher rates of dental disease. The inflammation and infection affecting the blood glucose levels of these patients in what ends up being a vicious cycle. Often times, once the teeth are addressed, we can see improvement in these patient’s numbers, overall energy, and quality of life.
