LIFESTYLE LETTER

Have Faith! Spring is here! We made it! Spring is finally in the air, my friends. With more daylight and warmer temps, this season always manages to boost our spirits and to inspire more activities. There are holidays to celebrate as well! What better way to tap into this energy than to check in with a trio of dear friends and this month’s cover stars in their quest to deliver exceptional restaurants in the DMV. The wildly popular Flavio in Georgetown is set to open a second location in Cathedral Heights (including a nightclub!) and the Wharf will see a Brazilian steakhouse in the fall. Bravo Fernando, Mekki and Hamza! Rabbi Adam Raskin's welcoming smile is a true reflection of the warmth and accessibility of Har Shalom's 700 members and of the brightly lit space where they worship. In hopes of breaking down barriers, Rabbi Raskin developed Potomac Area Interfaith Communities where several faiths share a commitment to make the world a better place. A leap of faith between faiths does a world of good! Happy Passover! Stephen Riley, Executive Director of Potomac Community Resources, is also quite familiar with how addressing differences takes on many forms as he carries on the mission to provide community-based programs for loved ones with developmental differences, a need that Joan and Jim Sullivan of Potomac and Monsignor John Enzler, former Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Church, first championed. Through innovative and therapeutic programs and partnerships with the county, civics groups, school and non-profits, this vital resource is impactful! Doing good and serving others fulfills both a religious duty for families of the Islamic Community Center of Potomac as well as an appreciation of different faiths. In collaboration with local synagogues, churches, and relief organizations, Dilshad Fakroddin, Communications Manager, reflects on the honor and gratitude experienced through service. Their purposeful deeds are a true blessing! Happy Ramadan! Warmth abounds in April in all its glorious forms! With neighbors bettering the world, there is a lot to be happy about. There is also plenty to see and do in the coming weeks to refresh our adventurous sides. Have fun, Potomac! And Happy Easter! KC COLE, PUBLISH ER @POTOMACLIFEST YLEDC

How Much Can I Give Away Each Year Gift Tax Free? While many clients are not ready to make significant taxable gifts, the use of Annual Exclusion Gifts whether for education trusts, 529 Accounts, Life Insurance Trusts, forgiveness of debt or “just because” remain an invaluable and widely used method to transfer wealth. The Annual Exclusion has increased for the first time in many years from $15,000 to $16,000 per person in 2022. This means that a married couple can transfer up to $32,000 per person on an annual basis without filing a Form 709 Gift Tax Return with the IRS and more importantly without utilizing any of their Lifetime Federal Exemption (currently $12.06 Million). These gifts can add up quickly with larger families and over time are an excellent way to help the next generation with education, going into business or acquiring that first home. CELEBRATING UNIVERSAL VALUES THE ICCP OFFERS EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IN THE SPIRIT OF GAINING KNOWLEDGE AND SERVING OTHERS

“We are like a family,” says Dilshad Fakroddin, the Islamic Community Center of Potomac Communications Manager. “The Imams help the community see things through the lens of Islam in a palatable way that makes sense and makes one grateful for higher understanding in a complex world.”

1. Afghan Refugee Relief “ICCP has been honored to help with relief efforts of all refugees who seek aid,” says Dilshad. “We work with churches, synagogues, relief organizations and individuals to provide monetary aid, food, clothing, shoes, appliances, and furniture, etc. to Afghan families and individuals.”

2. Annual Ramadan Interfaith Event The ICCP welcomes community members, churches, and synagogues to break bread in the holy month of Ramadan.“Discussions surround what we have in common: doing good, serving others, revering a higher entity, respect for oneself and others," Dilshad explains of the Ramadan discourse. "The impact is an incredible feeling of oneness and an appreciation of those who practice a different faith.”

3. Hunger Van This monthly program fulfills a religious duty to feed the poor and homeless, and much more. When students participate, Dilshad says, “Some cry when they are met with such sincerity and gratitude from the homeless in DC. Some say they feel better serving others.”

Sometimes a small step taken to address a specific need develops into a much wider resource to benefit an entire community. Thus began the story of Potomac Community Resources (PCR), a unique organization that assists individuals with developmental differences and their families. PCR was started in 1994 by Joan and Jim Sullivan of Potomac and Monsignor John Enzler, then the Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Church, as well as other families of the parish that included loved ones with developmental differences. Stephen F. Riley is the Executive Director of Potomac Community Resources, co-founder of the 501(c) (3) nonprofit, and parent of a PCR member. He talks about how the organization began: “Our experience living with our family members and seeing firsthand their immediate needs is what guided us through our journey.” During non-COVID times, PCR offers a wide-range of therapeutic, recreational, social, and respite care programs. These include music, fitness and movement, respite care for individuals with significant and moderate care needs, discussion groups for men and women, communication skills, basketball, art, a social club, photography, information sessions for parents of transitioning youth, and many special events throughout the year. All programs are led by caring professionals in their field: experienced music, art, and speech therapists, certified fitness trainers, and clinical social workers, all of whom specialize in working with people with developmental differences. They are assisted by PCR’s staff and dedicated volunteers. With the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic and the need to suspend in-person programs for health and safety reasons, PCR immediately pivoted its focus by providing virtual program offerings to include 20 online programs via Zoom and 100 program videos that are archived on pcrinc.org. Their monthly “Transition Times” info sessions, offered via Zoom webinars, provide much-needed information and access to community resources, such as applying for Social Security SSI/SSDI, and more.

PCR, in partnership with the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), has also created, produced, and distributed a new, five-part video series on what the DDA is, the various services and supports it offers, and how to access those services and resources. These videos include ASL interpretation to make them accessible for persons who are deaf, and also include Spanish language interpretation. Potomac Community Resources recognizes the benefit of working with other organizations for the good of its members and collaborates with the Montgomery County government and more than two dozen nonprofits, religious organizations, schools, civic organizations and clubs in the community. PCR does not own or lease office or program space, operating programs at sites made available through collaborations with other nonprofits. They employ only four full-time staff, which is supplemented with contracted professionals and hourly direct-care staff and a cadre of dedicated volunteers. Its program excellence, operational efficiency (89.2% of revenues go directly to programs), and good governance practices have been widely recognized, including six-time recognition by the Catalogue for Philanthropy as “one of the best small charities in Greater Washington.” More compelling than these awards, however, is the impact PCR makes in the lives of its 500 plus members by helping participants achieve goals relating to independence, self-care abilities, fine and gross motor skills, communication skills, positive social interactions, self-awareness and esteem. As one parent wrote, “My son loves all of the PCR classes he is taking and has taken over the years. They have especially meant a lot to us during this pandemic. Thank you for the classes online, thank you for all you and PCR do!” To learn more about PCR and its many offerings to support individuals and their families who have developmental disabilities visit their website: pcr-inc.org.

HAR SHALOM IS PROUDLY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL CONGREGANTS AND FAITHS

FA I T H

For 58 years, residents in the Potomac area have been congregating at what is now known as Har Shalom synagogue, starting in the early 1960s when individuals met in each other’s homes or maybe in a public-school auditorium, before the group purchased a farmhouse on the land where Har Shalom now sits. Since then, a lot has changed, but as Rabbi Adam Raskin explains, “We are an ancient faith tradition so there are timeless values” that serve as the foundation of Har Shalom, which the Rabbi rightfully considers a cornerstone Potomac institution. Today, among its more than 700 member families – and the surrounding community – Har Shalom is known for serving everyone regardless of their religious observance, political views, gender, sexuality, age, race, or disability. In fact, new members of Har Shalom often cite the synagogue’s accessibility as one of its most appealing aspects. “Everybody describes it as being unpretentious, warm, like a family, accessible and welcoming,” says the Rabbi. “We pride ourselves on that.” Accessibility is even built in to the architecture. Describing the welcoming sanctuary, Rabbi Raskin says, “Even the table where the torah is read slides down so someone in a wheelchair could read from the scroll. Also, everything is designed to be round, which is meant to cultivate a real sense of community. We see each other’s faces rather than the back of heads. The clergy doesn’t sit above the congregation. There is no elevated platform. That was part of the spirit of Har Shalom long before I came and I very much appreciate it.” Rabbi Raskin arrived in 2011 and by 2014, he spearheaded a capital improvement campaign for renovations. The original part of the building, he says, “was tired and dark and it was time to be refreshed and renewed.” The overall renovation, says the Rabbi, “transformed the whole feel of being in the building.” Today, Har Shalom offers programs for every demographic. “I think that’s a unique feature,” says the Rabbi, referring to Har Shalom’s film festivals, speaker series, book clubs and much more, including the very popular full-day Monday-Friday early childhood education center for kids aged 18 months through pre-K. “That’s really where community begins here,” he says. “It begins for the children but also for the parents who become very connected to each other.” CONTINUED >

Pre-Covid, celebrating Passover with a community seder was also popular among Har Shalom congregants and their extended family and friends. “It’s pretty raucous and family-friendly, with lots of singing and activities and movement and discussion,” the Rabbi recalls with a laugh. This year, like the last two, Har Shalom will instead acknowledge Passover through educational programming. “Our schools provide a lot of education and celebrating and preparing kids to be active participants with their families at Passover,” he adds. Soon after Rabbi Raskin first arrived at Har Shalom, he developed the Potomac Area Interfaith Communities. “It’s a very special group,” he says, as he ticks off members, including a Unitarian church, a Hari Krishna Temple, the Islamic Community Center of Potomac, a Baha’i’ place of worship, plus Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Presbyterian churches and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “They were excited to join forces and it’s been incredible,” the Rabbi says. The group started by having an interfaith Thanksgiving service. “There were choirs, we did a social action project with Manna Food Center, and we’ve done a lot of things together besides that. We’ve done some educational programs, etc.” the Rabbi explains.

26

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

He continues, “There is a very profound commitment to being involved in the larger community. Jewish values instruct us to help make the world a better place through our generosity, our hands-on involvement in various causes, being a voice for justice and compassion. So, we channel all that energy in various ways.” One of those ways manifested itself with the sponsorship of an Afghan refugee family. Instead of tackling the complicated resettlement process on his own, the Rabbi reached out to his friends at the Potomac Area Interfaith Communities. With a shared goal of helping the refugee family become acclimated, the group is helping the family find healthcare providers, translation services, and traditional clothing, plus organizing transportation, legal and financial support and helping them apply for additional aid. The Rabbi adds, “A generous donor stepped forward with a financial gift large enough for us to sponsor a second Afghan family.” “When the opportunity to sponsor a family first arose, I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful to demonstrate to this family that this is really what American society is at its best.’ Not what they may be used to – which is religion as a source of conflict and division - but religion as a source of unity and doing good together.”

Don’t try to put Fernando Guedes, Jr. into a box. Maybe he’ll stay there for a moment (and while he’s there, he’ll most likely re-brand the box as something fresh and new). Soon, though, he’ll poke his head out and start creating new things outside the box while somehow keeping part of himself still connected to the improved original box. Oh, and everything he creates will definitely be fabulous, especially if his partners, Hamza Hadani and Mekki Karrakchou are in on it. And they are always in on it. Fernando, Hamza and Mekki are a force in the DMV. A business-owning, restaurant-branding, crowd-pleasing force that, on one hand began with a simple meal at a long-established DC restaurant but, on the other hand, was generations in the making. Mekki’s father owned several restaurants in DC and New York. Mekki owned an Italian-hybrid restaurant in Georgetown called Paper Moon. Hamza grew up in the restaurant and entertainment business and owns Susheria in Georgetown. Fernando’s path was a little different. With Brazilian parents, Fernando was born and raised in Montgomery County and early-on developed a passion and talent for soccer. “I’ve played since I could walk,” he says. Through Fernando’s youth, he played soccer for teams in Bethesda and Potomac and eventually played two years semi-pro in Brazil. Along the way, Fernando realized he had an equal passion and talent for business. After playing soccer in Brazil, he became a coach and then opened the Brazilian Soccer Training Academy in Bethesda, where he remains Director of Training. The Academy focuses on helping at-risk youth from Brazil and the greater DMV. And, as a principal of Ace Construction DMV, Fernando is the third generation to help run his family’s construction business. CONTINUED >

Mekki met Hamza “randomly at a social event,” Fernando explains, and adds, “I was a customer at Paper Moon and Mekki befriended me. We all became friends, and we had the opportunity to re-brand Paper Moon, so we did it,” Fernando says lightly, as if it’s no big deal to snuff out a beloved DC institution like Paper Moon and remake it into Flavio, which became an even bigger hit when it opened in 2016, with Fernando, Hamza and Mekki as co-owners. “Flavio has become a staple in Georgetown, with a huge fan base,” Fernando says, as he describes what he calls a very traditional Italian restaurant with a modern feel and lively atmosphere. But the three friends and business partners were just getting started. Fernando explains that many Flavio clients come from the Cathedral Heights side of town so, when a landlord there reached out about opening another restaurant, Fernando, Mekki and Hamza were interested. “The space is amazing,” Fernando says of the Wisconsin Avenue area where Flavio’s 2.0 will open in June. “That strip, in the last five years, totally turned over and it was missing an Italian restaurant. So, when the landlord reached out to us, we agreed.” Flavio’s 2.0 will be as big as the original Flavio – about 10,000 square feet – but with a much bigger outdoor eating area. “It will have the same style of food, but with a speakeasy,” says Fernando. “The speakeasy will be called the Vault,” he says, as he explains that the space is adjacent to a bank and there will be an actual, huge, bank-vault door through which guests can enter. But wait, there’s more. In October of this year, the trio will also open a Brazilian steakhouse as part of Phase 2 construction at the Wharf, the District’s trendy southwest waterfront. Fernando, who also owns an architectural studio and is launching a business consulting company, explains how he, Mekki and Hamza maximize their contributions to each business they create. “We are a team,” he says simply. “I take the lead on the construction side, and I am also hands-on on the restaurant side. Hamza and Mekki are the restaurant connoisseurs.” Fernando and Hamza are in their early 30s, while Mekki is just over 40. “With all the brands we are putting out there,” Fernando says, “We want people to know: Hey these are the three guys that have all those restaurants and businesses in DC.” He mentions a “huge marketing plan” and a how everything up to this point is part of “a bigger master plan.” And just like that, another box gets ripped to shreds by none other than these three guys.

What I Wish My Parents Knew ARTICLE BY JEREMY FREDRICKS

Churchill Students Aim to Set the Record Straight When COVID-19 first forced Americans to work and learn from home in 2020, parents had a unique opportunity to spend more time with their children. Over time, however, kids clashed with their elders, putting distance between them. Winston Churchill High School returned to “normal” school in September, prompting students to consider what they wish their parents knew about a variety of topics.

COVID-19 Everyone has a different approach to the pandemic, which has led to disagreements between family members. “Everyone processes it in their own way,” senior Sudenur Yavuz said. “There’s no point in forcing beliefs on your children, or anyone else for that matter, because it’s everyone’s own individual health that’s affected.”

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | LI F E + CULTURE

Mental Health The pandemic brought mental health to the forefront for many families, as rates of depression, anxiety and suicide increased. “It’s real, and especially nowadays, affects high schoolers a lot more than before due to competition,” senior Aryaan Duggal said.

Growing Up

Adult or Child?

Senior year is the culmination of high school and for many Churchill students, college is ahead. The process of applying for colleges is very different than when parents applied. “At the end of the day, we are the students and we are the ones who are experiencing school now,” Yavuz said. “It's definitely not the same as it was when they were in high school.”

Some parts of growing up are the same, regardless of the time: learning to drive, making new friends, finding oneself. “Driving is a fundamental part of a high schooler’s life. Let us drive anywhere we can,” Duggal said. But things are different, like social media. “I feel like our generation specifically is a lot more mature and aware of ourselves,” Yavuz said.

Age 18 is a gray-area age: adult or child? “Just because I'm not an adult, that doesn't mean I should be treated like a child on behalf of my parents,” Yavuz said, explaining that children do not understand their action’s consequences, unlike teenagers whose “minds function the way that an adult’s does.”

POP FOR A CAUS E

is on a mission and H AV I N G FUN

ARTICLE BY CAROL VEDERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERICA LAND

Become A Student Ambassador!

One night while watching a movie during quarantine, Amanda Kossoff, decided that she simply had to improve upon the artificial, yellow butter in her microwavable popcorn. And from that point on her desire and commitment to help others took root and blossomed. Pop for a Cause is a 501(c)(3) organization that sells popcorn and donates 100% of its profits to charities. Amanda Kossoff, CEO and President, supported by student board members and volunteers, sells popcorn from their website, and hosts a variety of local, charitable events.

Student volunteers gathered on January 22 for A Wider Circle Care Packaging Event in Rockville, MD. They worked on packaging more than 300 Oral Care Kits (toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss) that benefited residents in Washington Highlands and included a personal note inside each bag. Pop for a Cause is looking for student volunteers for April Earth Day events! Plant trees, garden, etc. Visit popforacause.org. To become a student ambassador and to get involved in your community, or to support deserving charitable organizations by purchasing popcorn, visit popforacause.org. To connect with Amanda, email info@popforacause.org. Follow @popforacause on Instagram!
