LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Year of Wellness Means a Year of Greatness. This issue is full of stories about fighting the good fight to maintain and enhance health for a great new year. At Potomac Lifestyle, this great new year marks our fifth. We are extremely grateful to you, our readers, for keeping Potomac Lifestyle strong and growing as we celebrate our first five years of serving the community by sharing some its great stories. In this issue, meet the women who play full-contact tackle football for DC Divas, part of the Women’s Football Alliance. Despite the tough knocks, these women find that the sport enhances their physical and mental health. Then, at Regenerative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in North Bethesda, we meet John Ferrell, MD, co-founder of the practice who focuses on helping people get better without surgery. Dr. Michael Auriemma, also part of the team, describes the ROSM difference as treating the patient’s symptoms while addressing its root cause. Even a huge pink fire truck can be part of a wellness effort when it’s driven by Marshall Moneymaker. Known as the Pink Fireman, Marshall founded the non-profit For 3 Sisters, in honor of his own three sisters he lost to breast cancer. Today, For 3 Sisters supports survivors and those still in the fight. At the Aesthetic & Dermatology Center Rockville, Dr. Sunny Walia treats all patients with skill and compassion, in particular wounded veterans. Dr. Walia helps veterans gain confidence as well as mobility, all at reduced rates, as a way to thank them and give back. Passionate about helping women reach their highest possible level of good health, Meghan Punda, NP creates personalized dietary and lifestyle plans for clients of the Nourished + Well integrative health company. Wellness isn’t just for individuals. Our local companies also work very hard to maintain their wellness. At Potomac Lifestyle, we salute area business owners who survived and thrived through the pandemic to continue to provide the community with cherished and much-needed products and services. We wish them, and all of you, a happy, prosperous and healthy new year.

THE PINK FIREMAN CHANNELS THE LOSS OF THREE SISTERS INTO HELPING OTHERS FIND HOPE

Marshall Moneymaker, known as the Pink Fireman spreads hope for those in the fight against breast cancer.

A huge pink fire truck pulled up in front of the woman’s house where her kids, grandkids and friends gathered. As she began to realize the truck and the commotion were a show of support for her fight against breast cancer, there were tears and hugs all around. “Meeting breast-cancer survivors and interacting with people in need of our service is always meaningful,” says Shannon Moneymaker. “This woman,” Shannon recalls, “said our visit was the most amazing thing that ever happened in her life.” If life is a journey, it might as well be on a huge pink fire truck like the one owned by For 3 Sisters, an organization run by Shannon and her husband Marshall. In addition to bringing hope to others, the truck is the perfect metaphor for their life journey. A career firefighter with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, Marshall unbelievably lost three sisters to breast cancer. Vicky died in 2008, while Penny and Valessa died in 2010, just months apart. In the midst of all this loss, a group organizing a breast-cancer walk set up a pit-stop in the parking lot at Marshall’s fire house. The positive, supportive vibe of the group offered hope to Marshall who began getting out in the community reminding women to get mammograms. In 2011, in recognition of Marshall’s efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, Marshall’s shift co-workers and the Bethesda Fire Department’s fire chief surprised Marshall with a gift of pink turnout gear and a pink helmet. Marshall’s alter ego was born. From then on, he became known as the Pink Fireman, and became even more committed to raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection, and supporting survivors and those still in the fight. That same year – 2011 - Marshall and Shannon formed For 3 Sisters, a national grassroots organization committed to ensuring that no one fights breast cancer alone. The organization was the embodiment of their passion and helped them continue the fight even after Marshall retired with a back injury in 2013. Fast forward to 2019 when the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue service was preparing to auction off the fire truck known as Engine 61/706; the very truck with which Marshall spent 11 of his fire-fighting years. Marshall and E61/706 had served the community together on the front lines and Shannon and Marshall saw the engine as a chance for them to come together again in retirement. In April 2020, they acquired the engine but then Covid threw them another curveball and it took until June 5, 2021 before Shannon and Marshall could present E61/706 to the public in its new pink incarnation. That was the eve of National Cancer Survivors Day and the day that E61/706 officially became known as Vicky: an iconic symbol of hope, strength, support, and outreach for breast cancer and healthy communities nationwide, and named, of course, for Marshall’s first sister to lose her breast-cancer battle.

The next day, on National Cancer Survivors Day, Vicky made her first official appearance at the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Survivors Day Celebration. In July, she appeared in front of nearly 20,000 people over the July 4th weekend proclaiming her message of hope to people in Annapolis, Catonsville, and Havre de Grace. “It’s the community’s fire engine,” says Shannon. “So, if we’re asked to visit a patient, we do our best to be there.” Today, with Vicky, For 3 Sisters helps raise breast cancer awareness via events, appearances, and parades; delivers health information to under-resourced and under-insured communities; and inspires and promotes hope and strength to breast cancer fighters, survivors, and thrivers. The group also hopes to be able to provide celebratory rides home for patients who have completed their cancer treatment or a phase of treatment.

Although Vicky may be the most visible aspect of For 3 Sisters, the group offers a lot more. In a program called Road to Resources, patients and survivors receive financial support and case- management support in applying for a variety of services. Through the Power of ONE program, For 3 Sisters provides community education about breast cancer, early detection, and more. For 3 Sisters also offers a men’s caregiver support group, and gets involved with charity fashion shows, bingo and more. And there’s Hope, a golden retriever ambassador and therapy dog in-training who offers support at many For 3 Sisters events. In addition to Vicky, For 3 Sisters has a pink pick-up truck named Penny, for the second sister Marshall lost. “Braddock Heights VFD is donating an ambulance to be our event-support vehicle,” says Shannon who expects to introduce this vehicle in spring or summer 2022. This ambulance will of course be named Valessa, making the fleet finally and truly for three sisters.

THE DC WOMEN’S FOOTBALL TEAM TACKLES CHALLENGES ON THE FIELD AND IN LIFE

In the Women’s Football Alliance, players kick field goals of nearly 40 yards while the DC Divas' quarterback can throw 50 yards or more.

Like other national champions, the DC Divas met the President and First Lady.

Lexie Floor

They say history favors the bold. Haley Van Voorhis hopes so. She is making history playing defensive back on the men’s tackle football team at Shenandoah University. And then there’s Jennifer King, assistant running backs coach for the Washington Football Team; Callie Brownson, the Chief of Staff with the Cleveland Browns; and Desiree Abrams, replay assistant with the NFL. These women are all Divas. Not the petulant, temperamental kind, but alumni of the professional tackle football team known as the DC Divas. The team is one of more than 50 in the Women’s Football Alliance, and one of 12 in the Alliance’s highest division, known as WFA PRO. The full-contact game is played in pads and helmets on a 100-yard field, following NCAA football rules. Founded in 2001, the Divas are the winningest team in the WFA, having won the National Championship in 2006, 2015 and 2016. Besides getting jobs in the NFL, many Divas become college or high-school coaches but many also pursue careers unrelated to football. Team owner and president Rich Daniel says, “Regardless, the DC Divas learn life lessons while improving their physical and mental health.” The Divas range in age from 18 to 40+ and, since they have to pay to play, all are students or have other jobs, including IT specialist, PE teacher, pharmacy tech, line cook, and mechanical engineer.

Divas wide receiver Lois Cook is 37 and the mom of four boys, aged 2 to 15. She’s a social-media influencer and runs the non-profit Lois Cook Foundation, dedicated to growing the sport and mentoring athletes. “I love hitting people and not getting in trouble for it,” she laughs, adding, “I also love creating bonds and a sisterhood/family that you’ll have for the rest of your life.” “We’re fairly well recognized,” says Rich as he reflects on how potential players find their way to Divas’ try-outs. “There are flag leagues. We have 500+ alumni teammates. We recruit through social media,” he adds. Nearly 30 other countries play women’s tackle American football. “So that’s created a lot of interest,” says Rich who adds, “I drive a DC Diva truck and that’s led to conversations with people who become volunteers, sponsors, fans and recruits.” To help alleviate player costs, the Divas are now a 501 (c) (3) so donations are tax deductible and can be given like scholarships to specific players. “We’ve also gotten the uniforms sponsored,” adds Rich. Eleven Sports/FTF (For the Fans) Network broadcasts 10 WFA Games of the Week, plus the league playoffs, and the July WFA National Championship game which is played at the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Last year, the Divas played home games in Fairfax County. This year, they’ll be in Alexandria. The games are played on Saturdays April through July.

The DC Divas provide a powerful positive example to youngsters. Each year, they may play in Boston, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Detroit or Columbus.

“I love the sport and have great respect for it. This team, the sport and the league captured me with their heart, dedication, sacrifice and talent. These are super-talented people and it’s expressed with such joy, tenacity, belief and tears. That’s what keeps me driving the truck,” Rich says. JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . T H AT’S MORE T H A N SK IN DEEP AT THE AESTHETIC AND DERMATOLOGY CENTER, DR. SUNNY WALIA OFFERS VETERANS NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR HEALING MIND AND BODY

When the patient, a veteran, showed up in the office of Dr. Sunny Walia with a painful, itchy and stiff scar on their amputated leg stump, Dr. Walia knew she could help. The patient had a prosthetic leg but was still quite limited in the ability to walk. Using medical-grade lasers in multiple treatments spaced out over several months, Dr. Walia helped improve the pliability of the patient’s scar and ultimately increased the range of motion with better use of the prosthesis. Dr. Walia, a fellowship-trained laser dermatologist with the Aesthetic and Dermatology Center in Rockville recalls, “The patient was appreciative and grateful for the opportunity to use the prosthesis more effectively. They told me ‘I can actually play with my kids now.’” There are many types of battle wounds and most people probably wouldn’t consider a dermatologist as being on the front lines of helping to heal those wounds but that’s right where Dr. Walia prefers to be. Her husband is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. “I am very proud of his service,” she says. “As best as I can, I would like to give back to veterans who have done so much for our country. They are very special and they have sacrificed for our country. Many of the freedoms we enjoy in the United States today are due to their sacrifices.” With an emphasis on compassion, Dr. Walia puts her extensive training to use with the newest laser technology to improve the emotional well-being and quality of life for veterans, one patient at a time.

26

“I treat veterans’ scars - from burns or explosive devices - at discounted rates,” she adds. “To give back to them, as a way to thank them for their service.” For all patients – whether veterans or not – Dr. Walia begins by listening. “I treat each patient as a family member,” she says. “Sometimes you can pick up a diagnosis by simply listening to what patients tell you. Then, I show compassion and present options and pros and cons. It’s not me telling the patient what to do. We decide together how best to move forward. Do they want to initiate treatments that may be more aggressive, or a more conservative approach? It’s a mutual respectful discussion.” The Aesthetic and Dermatology Center also includes Dr. Lawrence Green (an expert in psoriasis, among other things), an aesthetician and a clinical study department. Together, the team’s specialties include devices such as Genius microneedling and Radiofrequency, LaseMD™ non-ablative fractional laser (for pigment issues), VBeam pulsed dye laser (for scars, burns, and spider veins) PRP (for hair loss, scars, and photo-rejuvenation)®, Botox and fillers, general medical dermatology, skincare, and chemical peels. Dr. Walia chose her career path when a dermatologist changed her life by treating Dr. Walia’s own childhood skin issues. “She dramatically improved my skin and my personality greatly changed and my overall emotional well-being improved,” she recalls. “I thought: This is great. I would like to do this for someone else.” She’s been recognized as a top dermatologist in the DMV every year since 2008 in Washingtonian magazine and U.S. News and World Report. In addition to Dr. Walia’s efforts to help veterans, the practice offers free skin-cancer screenings, has done school outreach programs to educate kids about sunscreen, and has offered physician services to free medical clinics working with various non-profits. ROSM Regenerative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is leading a paradigm shift in its field of care ARTICLE BY MARIE ROBEY WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDT PENUEL “Physician, heal thyself,” the old proverb states. Some medical practitioners turn this saying around to “Patient, heal thyself.” They believe in using regenerative medical treatments that focus on helping individuals use their body’s own healing abilities before resorting to surgery. One of these doctors is John Ferrell, MD, a board-certified Family Medicine Physician. After serving four years in the Navy and participating in fellowships in sports medicine and musculoskeletal sonography, which included working with the Redskins, the Washington Nationals and the players of DC United, he opted for private practice. In 2014 he co-founded Regenerative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine - ROSM - with Dr. David Wang and the late Dr. Victor Ibrahim. Placing an emphasis on innovative technology and a holistic approach to healing, the practice has expanded from one office on Capitol Hill to six offices throughout the area, employing eleven doctors and two physician assistants. According to Dr. Ferrell, their practice fills in the gap between cortisone injections, physical therapy and surgery for a vast array of medical conditions. He notes that when a patient believes that those are the only three options, a lot of time they will stop seeking medical treatment. He adds, “So many people are walking around like this, suffering and in pain, that we want to let them know that’s there’s an option that is safe, effective, and has evidence behind it.” Dr. Ferrell and his fellow physicians at ROSM feel there is a better way: “We want to treat people and help them get better without having them go under the knife.” They offer minimally invasive therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), where a patient’s blood is drawn, transferred to a centrifuge tube and spun to concentrate the platelets. The concentrated platelets are then injected into the injury site to stimulate growth factors. Other minimally invasive therapies include bone marrow and adipose-derived therapies. Dr. Michael Auriemma joined ROSM three years ago. His primary training is in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He spent five years of training after medical school, including one year of a sports medicine fellowship through Harvard in a program that offered extensive training in orthobiologics, the substances orthopedic doctors use to help injuries heal more quickly.

“Our procedures are all image-guided and there is no guess work. This is redefining orthopedics.”

The doctors at ROSM don’t discount the idea that for some patients, surgery is the answer, but believe that the vast majority of patients don’t need it. If their patient does need surgery they will refer them to a surgeon and if they need physical therapy, (although they don’t offer it on-site), they will send a patient to an office that offers physical therapy. Dr. Ferrell says, “We offer realistic expectations and are guided by ethics.” In addition, the vast majority of doctors in the practice are involved with different national organizations and thought leaders, and participate in curriculums with those thought leaders, innovators and pioneers in their field. Dr. Auriemma adds “Another thing that sets us apart as a private practice group is we hold monthly academic meetings where we talk about new articles and FDA guidelines to stay abreast of what is current.” Although their treatments are currently not covered by insurance because they are still considered “experimental”, they are hopeful that eventually a groundswell of patients will ask insurance to cover them, considering they are effective and are much less expensive than surgery. According to Dr. Auriemma, “We are passionate about what we do. When a person has an injury or ongoing chronic condition that won’t go away, that affects someone’s mental and physical health.” He adds, “We deal with quality of life, and when we restore someone’s quality of life, that’s just a game-changer.”

Both doctors believe that the typical medical system rewards fast turnover in terms of seeing patients in volume. “Our practice has a different approach: we see fewer patients to delve into a patient’s issue to not just treat the symptom but to find the cause of that symptom,” they say. According to Dr. Auriemma, “One element that sets ROSM apart from a typical orthopedic office is the ultrasound imaging we offer right at the patient’s bed side as an extension of the exam. We’re getting realtime feedback as to what the joint and soft tissues look like. Sometimes that obviates the need for an x-ray or MRI and sometimes it supplements and complements imaging provided by the x-ray or MRI. “He adds, “This way, our procedures are all image-guided and there is no guess work. This is redefining orthopedics.”

NOURISHED + WELL PERSONALIZED DIETARY AND LIFESTYLE PLANS TO HELP ACHIEVE OPTIMUM HEALTH ARTICLE BY MARIE ROBEY WOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBERT AUSURA

When it comes to nutrition and women’s health, Meghan Punda, NP, knows her subject matter. As the founder of the new integrative health company Nourished + Well, she is passionate about helping women reach their highest possible level of good health. This involves not only working to prevent diseases but also reversing chronic diseases by implementing the proper lifestyle and nutrition interventions, steps she focuses on with her clients. Meghan brings an impressive background to her business: As a nurse and then nurse practitioner she worked first in medicine at Johns Hopkins and, for the past twenty years, continued her career in primary care and oncology. While working with adults and seeing many different aspects of medicine, she was also dealing with her own autoimmune disorder and gastrointestinal issues.

1.

2.

3. 4.

She educated herself on eating the best foods and supplements to help her recover. She then brought her own self-knowledge of reaching good health along with her years of experience in clinical medicine to start a company helping others achieve the same results. According to Meghan, your body really wants to live in a state of balance and, given the right opportunity, it will try to balance itself if you take away the roadblocks. For those women interested in the Nourished + Well program she will spend time finding out about the individual’s goals including what health challenges are, and then devise a detailed, individualized plan to help her arrive at a healthier state of wellness. With her clients she focuses on four fundamental aspects of achieving and maintaining good health:

First, the importance of getting quality sleep. She believes that people completely underestimate the importance of sleep and how the body repairs itself during sleep. Besides getting the appropriate number of hours of rest at night, getting natural light, especially in the morning, helps keep your circadian rhythm in balance. Getting fresh air several times a day is a great idea. Not eating three hours before we go to bed is helpful and people should be aware that drinking alcohol can also affect getting a good night’s sleep.

Proper nutrition is another important element of good health. As a functional nutritionist she creates individual plans on how to best fuel one’s body. These take into account such health situations as hormonal imbalances, digestive issues and food sensitivities. Helping women navigate perimenopause and menopause is her specialty and sometimes she will offer testing for women whose hormone levels are fluctuating and declining. She will suggest supplements if she thinks they are necessary.

When it comes to exercise, Meghan is a big proponent of strength training. She writes that “You might be surprised to learn that our muscular system is the largest organ system in the body. Muscles are central to our overall health as they help to regulate our metabolism and maintain our posture, movement, and breathing.”

Managing stress is the fourth essential step to achieving optimal health. “People absolutely underestimate how stress affects the body,” she says. By guiding her clients on learning how to decompress and activate the parasympathetic state she teaches them that by relaxing more one is able to balance the body and hormones, another important example of ways to achieve a healthier life.

For those interested in learning more about Nourished + Well and working with Meghan, go to the website www.nourishedandwellco.com, email Meghan at meghan@nourishedandwellco.com or call her at (410) 917-2197.
