WORK UNDERWAY TO MODIFY ENTRANCE TO DOWNTOWN BETHESDA The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is modifying a high-traffic entrance to downtown Bethesda near the National Institutes of Health. Part of the median at the intersections of Woodmont and Wisconsin avenues will be demolished in order to narrow the turn lanes onto Woodmont Avenue from southbound Wisconsin Avenue to one lane. The change is designed to slow vehicles as they make right turns from southbound Wisconsin Avenue onto Woodmont Avenue. It also makes pedestrian crossing safer, according to Jeff Burton, executive deputy director of the Bethesda Urban Partnership. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.

TEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY JACK HARTZMAN IF YOU’VE EVER COME ACROSS THE QUESTION, “HAVE YOU SERVED IN THE MILITARY?” on medical paperwork, Holy Cross Health President and CEO Dr. Norvell Coots wants you to understand the importance of answering honestly.

“If I came into the ER with a hurt knee but didn’t identify myself as a veteran, and you didn’t ask, you wouldn’t know that I was injured in combat, that I also have a hurt shoulder and maybe a little PTSD, that I’m having problems dealing with my family at home—you would only look at my knee,” he explains.

A veteran himself, having served in the U.S. Army for 36 years, Coots took a special interest in helping to spearhead Trinity Health Military and Veterans Health, the new program now available at Holy Cross.

“We trained our staff in the differences between the military branches and what it means to have served in Vietnam and the medical effects of the Gulf War, Desert Storm or Operation Iraqi Freedom,” he says. “If you didn’t know these things and someone came in and said they served in Afghanistan, you might thank them for their service, but you probably wouldn’t know that they were likely exposed to burn pits and might suffer a respiratory syndrome as a result.

“No one goes to war and comes back the same person. That’s the first thing you have to recognize,” he says. “We really want to have a holistic approach, helping both the military member and their family, getting beyond just the presenting symptom to offer the care that these patients truly deserve.”

Lemonade, the resident summer drink cooler, is even better in frozen form. Try this tart, creamy concoction combined with Jell-O—the food that makes anything a little bit more fun—and hit it out of the park with these after-party treats.

PRO TIP: Punch the popsicle stick through a cupcake liner to catch those messy drips!

FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest

WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set.

2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth.

3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (they’ll need to fit in the popsicle molds).

4. Fill the popsicle molds about halfway with Jell-O cubes, then fill the remaining space with the blended lemonade mixture.

5. Add popsicle sticks if needed and freeze overnight.
