LIFESTYLE LETTER

Let's Taste a Cup of Kindness Cheers to wrapping up 2023, and a big hello to 2024. I am Tara Phillips, Managing Editor, reaching out from the Seacoast hamlet of Rye, where I live with my husband Graham and two teenaged daughters. For many years, life centered around a fivemile radius: from school drop-offs and pick-ups to local athletic fields and trips to Market Basket, with a short commute upstairs to my home office in between. Like many of us, post-COVID, I was searching for a change–a new challenge, and specifically something to get me out and more engaged in the community. Since meeting at Babson College during our MBA studies, Portsmouth City Lifestyle’s publisher Anne Moodey and I often talked about building something together. So here we are, coming to you every month. Storytelling has the power to connect people and build a sense of community. Each month, with the help of local writers and photographers, we curate stories that highlight the people, places, businesses, and organizations we know and love and, more importantly, those we don’t yet know. Our goal is to inspire and bring joy to our readers through shared experiences. In this Health and Wellness issue, we introduce you to a new wave of wholebody wellness services in Portsmouth and offer some sage advice on investing in your long-term health and well-being. As we enter into January’s dark and cold days, I challenge you to resist the urge to hibernate and instead embrace the opportunity to get out and enjoy all the seacoast has to offer–just outside your front door. Thank you for welcoming us into your home through Portsmouth City Lifestyle. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as we enjoy bringing them to life. Please feel free to share your ideas, celebrations, and happenings to help us showcase the amazing and unique aspects that make our seaside communities a wonderful place to live, work, and play. See you in February for some more local love!

INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE

care

HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE FINANCIALLY PREPARED TO LIVE LONGER

“My family didn’t talk about aging, but we learned the importance of not waiting for a crisis to start a conversation. Wellness, always top of mind as the new year starts, is about much more than just fitness and diet. Cultivating long-term well-being demands thoughtful consideration and planning. Pat Bennett, founder and President of Longevity Planning in Portsmouth, says, “People often put together a will to prepare to die but fail to think about what happens if they live.” She understands the importance of long-term care planning after watching her grandparents, who lived to be 100, suffer from Alzheimer’s. For more than 30 years, Pat has helped individuals and families prepare for their future needs. City Lifestyle interviewed her to get answers to frequently asked questions.

12

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FI NAN CE + LE GAL SE RVICE S

Pick a relaxed time. Consider many ‘what if’ scenarios. Be realistic about where you want to receive care and how you will pay for care. ”

What is long-term care? It is extended care, at home, an assisted living facility, or a nursing home to help with daily activities, like dressing and bathing. Without insurance, it can be costly.

Does my health insurance cover it? Health insurance does not cover elder care or assisted living facilities; it only covers acute care. Many people will need two to three years of longterm care in their lifetime.

Why buy this insurance? Most people underestimate the risk of needing longterm care and the emotional, physical, and financial toll it can take on unprepared families. Having long-term care insurance provides peace of mind.

When should I purchase a policy? Plan while you are healthy because you must medically qualify for a policy. You can purchase long-term care as part of a comprehensive financial plan after age 30.

How do I pick a policy? Plans can vary, but covering even half the cost of care is helpful. It’s best to talk to a professional who can explain the options and suggest a policy that works for your family.

How do I start the conversation? My family didn’t talk about aging, but we learned the importance of not waiting for a crisis to start a conversation. Pick a relaxed time. Consider many ‘what if’ scenarios. Be realistic about where you want to receive care and how you will pay for care. Think about the physical, emotional, and financial consequences when your spouse or children become your caregiver.

Be More, Do More in 2024 RESTORE HYPER WELLNESS ENHANCES YOUR VITALITY

Every January, thoughts and focus for many turn from holiday excess and indulgence to setting new goals and intentions. Many of those center around health, but most New Year’s resolutions are quickly forgotten if they aren’t clear and realistic. This year, make those goals a reality by trying something totally “outside the box” (and super easy) that doesn’t involve sweating for hours on a treadmill.

Restore Hyper Wellness, headquartered in Austin, Texas, with more than 233 locations nationwide, offers a wholebody integrative approach to health and healing. Services are for clients of any age–from young athletes to older adults and people looking to counteract aging and degenerative changes by leveraging their bodies’ natural healing abilities. Restore provides a comfortable environment with affordable access to holistic treatments that help clients “do more” of what they love. Husband and wife owners Dwayne and Karen Duprey are excited to bring this innovative offering for vitality and healing to Portsmouth. The Dupreys are no strangers to the health and wellness industry. Many in the community may know them as the former owners of the New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont Orangetheory Fitness locations. Restore offers four core service modalities–Cryotherapy, Compression, Red Light Therapy, and Infrared Sauna. Karen notes that local and whole-body cryotherapy treatments are among the most popular. She attributes cryotherapy’s popularity to its efficiency—each session lasts only two and a half or three minutes—and its health benefits, which include boosting mood, energy, and sleep, as well as promoting tissue healing and pain relief. Compression provides cyclical pressure to extremities to promote lymphatic drainage and help ease muscle aches

while relaxing in the comfort of a luxurious recliner. The infrared sauna uses infrared radiation to generate mild electromagnetic waves that induce intentional thermal stress on the body. It improves circulation, energy, heart health, and tissue detoxification. Red light therapy employs light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that focus on cellular mitochondria to boost cell turnover, optimize sleep, improve energy and mood, and relieve pain and inflammation. “Some people like to piggyback treatments to take advantage of the many offerings and enhance the healing benefits,” Karen explains. “Clients often do the whole body cryotherapy and then go into the infrared sauna or the red light to add some heat/cold activity therapy benefits.” Restore also offers specialized services like their popular customized IV drip therapy to support immunity, recovery, and energy. Other wellness treatments include mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Circadia Oxygen facials for skin radiance, and a range of non-invasive cosmetic cryoskin treatments like CryoSlimming and CryoToning. Each enhances your healing, mood, and cognition and works naturally with your body’s innate processes. Walking into Restore Hyper Wellness, clients experience a clean, open, and welcoming environment that is less clinical and more spa-like than you might expect. Registered nurses help guide your choice of services and approaches to best suit your specific needs. The process begins with a thorough health history, assessing for any possible risks or contraindications that may eliminate particular treatments from the roster. The medical staff also administers services and monitors adherence to strict clinical protocols to ensure client safety. “Each treatment is customized. There’s no cookie-cutter service or frequency approach. It all depends on the person and what they need and want,” says Karen. “We talk about what you’re looking for and why you came to see us. We can then suggest a treatment plan with a course of action.” With that in mind, Karen also recognizes that new clients may come into Restore

With varying monthly membership levels, clients can try whichever services they might be interested in. You can even modify or freeze your membership as needed. As a bonus, members can visit other locations throughout the country, so snowbirds and frequent travelers should take note. Restore Hyper Wellness should be near the top of your list if you’re looking for a simple and efficient way to keep your New Year’s Resolutions all year. Karen and Dwayne are happy to offer not just one but two locations in Portsmouth strategically located to provide easy access to wellness services across our seacoast communities. Karen understands that her clientele’s busy lives require services close to home or work. Your traditional New England outdoor ice skating experience caps off, cozying up by the fire pit with mugs of tasty hot cocoa.

There is no reason to stow your bike away. With milder seacoast winters, there are plenty of trails to explore all winter long. And if there is a fresh dumping of snow, take a spin on a fat bike. Head out to Stratham Hill Park for a snow day adventure with family and friends.

If the Farmer’s Almanac is on point, we are in for a snowy winter. Skiers, consider holding off on upgrading your performance layers and invest in some winter-weight neoprene to take advantage of big winter swells. The Atlantic is a shorter drive with no lift lines, and you can still enjoy aprés with a view.

Who says paddleboarding has to stop when temperatures start to drop? Winter paddling opens up opportunities to continue exploring our waterways and wildlife and keeping that New Year’s resolution to stay fit. Of course, you’ll need to invest in the right gear, but our local surf shops have that covered.

Dark winter days are ideal for snuggling up with a book and a steaming beverage. This simple pleasure is even better after a breath-stealing plunge with friends in the Atlantic. For seacoast dwellers, this wellness trend couldn’t be easier. Pack up a hefty robe and hop in the car for a heart-pumping dip.
