LIFESTYLE LETTER
Grandmother knows best My grandmother (Nanny, as I called her) always used to say, "If you have your health, you have everything." The older I get, the more profound that statement becomes to me. It's true—if you don't have your health, nothing else really matters. For many Americans who set New Year's resolutions, a health-related goal often tops the list. Even though we should be mindful of our wellness goals year-round, there's something about that sense of a fresh start that makes us feel we can wipe the slate clean of all the less-than-stellar life decisions we made the previous year. That's why our January issue is full of ways to maximize that "This is my year!" feeling when it comes to your health and wellness goals. With everything from food and fitness to longevity and healing, you're sure to find something in the following pages that will bring you closer to a healthier you. And no matter what your goals are as you start 2024, I hope you remember Nanny's words of wisdom, and that they inspire you to focus on your health and wellness not just in January, but all year long.

“
eople always talk about balance, but it’s a really tricky thing to achieve,” notes Tara Cavanaugh, co-owner of Health Resonates, a boutique wellness spa in the West End. “For me, self-care is looking at myself as a whole and determining if I’m feeling overwhelmed or anxious, then figuring out what tools I can use to get back into my body so that I can show up as my best every day.”
Cavanaugh loves a good massage, skincare service, yoga session, or energy work to ground herself, but she acknowledges that self-care can be as simple as penciling in a five-minute break to breathe or meditate, reading before bed, or practicing gua-sha to stretch the muscles in your face and neck. “There’s a common misconception that you need a bath or you need to spend money on a service for it to qualify as self-care,” she explains. “Stepping away from that and just focusing on your body, your mind, and your breath is a very easy starting point.”
“Sometimes we don’t realize that we’re a little out of whack until we’re feeling overwhelmed or burnt out,” Cavanaugh adds. “I like to ask myself, Am I hydrated enough? Am I eating regularly? Do I need to talk to someone? One thing that’s helped me and many of my loved ones is therapy,” she says. “At the end of the day, I think that’s a boundary that people are often scared to cross, but self-care is about getting to know yourself and being comfortable with who you are.” Find out more about Health Resonates’ services at healthresonates.com.

1 ) T H E S Q U AT If there’s one major compound movement you should know how to do properly, it’s the squat. Start by lowering your hips from a standing position to below your knee joint, then stand back up to your starting position.
1A) SET UP + EXECUTION Place your feet hip-width apart with your toes slightly pointed out. Take a deep breath to fill your diaphragm and brace through your abs. Push your knees out and sit the hips straight down. When your knees have gone lower than your hips, push through your legs and feet back to your starting position while exhaling.
1B) PROGRESSION Support yourself against a wall or hold onto an object in front of you. Eventually, move to a free-standing bodyweight squat, then start to add resistance in the form of hand weights, a kettlebell, or a barbell. The variations are endless once you have your foundational squat dialed in.

2) WORLD’S G R E AT E S T S T R E T C H Start in a high plank position with hands under the shoulders. Bring the left foot between your hands so that you are in a runner’s lunge. Keeping your right palm flat on the floor, pick up the left arm and slowly rotate it toward the ceiling. Hold at the top, then return the arm to the floor and repeat.
3 ) G LU T E R O L L- O U T Sit on the foam roller with one leg extended and the other bent. Place the bottom of the bent leg foot securely on the floor and press the glute on the extended leg into the foam roller with one arm on the floor for support. Lean your body towards the bent leg side to open up the glute.
4) CONTROLLED ARTICULAR R O TAT I O N ( C A R ) Start in a side-lying position with the bottom leg extended. Bend the top leg and bring the knee in front of the body. Move the bent leg out to the side, squeezing the glute to bring the knee toward the ceiling, and hold. Internally rotate the hip, keeping the knee in the same plane while the ankle moves behind the body. Reverse by externally rotating the hip to bring the ankle forward. Keeping the knee bent, return the leg to the floor.

Naturopathy is a form of integrative medicine that aims to treat the whole person rather than putting a band-aid on symptoms or simply managing a disease. In addition to using nature as medicine and prioritizing supportive therapies over invasive treatment, the field emphasizes the doctor as a teacher who spends time listening to a patient while digging deep and looking at the whole person. At family-owned Wildwood Integrated Health in Falmouth, Drs. Sasha Rose and Daniel Katz employ this holistic, multidisciplinary approach to health and wellness to help patients live comfortably in our modern world.

DR. SASHA ROSE ON HER HOLISTIC APPROACH TO GUT HEALTH
“After undergrad, I was trying to figure out what career path to take, and I was pretty interested in healthcare and medicine,” explains Dr. Sasha. “I considered conventional medical school, but I already had a belief in mind-body medicine and treating the whole person, so when a friend told me about naturopathic medicine, I knew it was the right fit: it was medical, it was based in Western medicine with evidence-backed science, and it really acknowledged the emotional and spiritual side of an individual.” During her six-year doctorate program in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Sasha met her future husband, Daniel, and upon graduation, the two drove across the country with their two cats and German shepherd to settle in Portland, Maine. “I started as a generalist, but I quickly realized I didn’t want to practice primary care,” says Dr. Sasha. “When I moved to Maine, I realized there were tons of other people with degrees who could offer it, like nurse practitioners and MDs. I had this whole other skill set that those providers didn’t have,” she explains. Not long after launching Wildwood, Dr. Sasha was approached by a friend in the health publishing world who encouraged her to write a book on whatever topic she wanted. “I was noticing that the majority of my cases were either a GI concern or mental and emotional struggles, like anxiety and depression. Writing the book gave me an opportunity to study the mindgut connection before it was a mainstream topic,” she explains. “Most of us have an experience in our life

Dr. Sasha treats patients of all kinds in her digestive health practice, from those at the beginning of their investigative journey to those with full diagnoses to young children with gastrointestinal upset. After running comprehensive tests and taking into account any diagnostic exams from a patient’s gastroenterologist or PCP, she determines the best plan for treatment. “Sometimes it’s an actual pharmaceutical antibiotic, if that’s what’s indicated, but it can also be an herbal antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory herb, or vitamins,

minerals, and nutrition,” she explains. “There’s a thin line between prescriptive diets and disordered eating, so I tend to take a hands-off approach to dieting. I’m not going to tell someone they need to restrict their eating to certain foods, but there are elimination and anti-inflammatory diets that can be helpful in getting digestion back on track.” To learn more about Dr. Sasha’s digestive health practice and other services, visit wildwoodmedicine.com.

Wellness INNOVATIONS IN HORMONE BALANCING AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE MEAN NO LONGER ACCEPTING WHAT’S “NORMAL” FOR YOUR AGE
“The hormones are like a beautiful symphony. If the drums are too loud Low energy, loss of muscle mass, weight gain, aches, pains, and brain fog are just some of the changes we accept as part of the natural aging process. Dr. Michael Bedecs, owner and medical director of the Age Management Center of New England, argues that many of these symptoms come from hormonal imbalances in the body—and innovations in the field of longevity wellness mean we can optimize our health so that we no longer have to feel older as we age.

or there are no horns, it’s still music, but it’s not balanced. Our aim is to keep everything balanced.”
Dr. Michael Bedecs
What led you to health optimization, hormone balancing, and regenerative medicine in the first place? Traditional medicine tends to treat immediate illnesses, and oftentimes ones that are chronic in nature. With health optimization, we’re looking at enhancing the quality of life you have left. Our providers at the Age Management Center are looking to help people achieve that proactively and early on. Beyond just hormone levels, we look at everything—lifestyle, exercise, stress levels, diet, medical history and even genetics—or else we’re not helping our patients maximally to reach that goal quality of life.
How does the Age Management Center approach hormonal imbalances differently from traditional medicine? I practiced conventional medicine for many years. It’s a hard profession, and it generally does a good job of identifying and treating acute and chronic illnesses. But hormonal imbalances usually require extra time and a next level of sensitivity for symptoms that aren’t immediately recognized as being hormonally related. One of the most important differences is having time to listen. We spend an hour and a half on our first patient consultation, so we’re actually able to focus on the patient’s concerns and complaints. There are specific hormones tied to the aging process—estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol—and as we get older, they get lower. Traditional medicine too often calls this “graceful aging,” but we refuse to accept that. To me, graceful aging is an oxymoron, because I know how easily we can identify and treat conditions that are normally associated with drops in those hormones. CONTINUED >

The Age Management Center of New England
How does hormone replacement therapy work? We treat people—not labs—but getting the appropriate lab work, medical history, and exams is necessary to get a diagnosis and start someone on a treatment program. Traditional medicine might run routine health screening tests that may give some insight into certain hormones, but we get a multi-page lab report that specifically targets and measures all the major hormones, as well as a complete metabolic analysis, and review of cardiac risk factors and vitamin levels, and we walk through the entire report with our patients. Our philosophy is to empower patients to make decisions based on understanding their data and the choices available to them. Once we’ve identified some of the issues, we help people realize that it’s not their fault, and there’s no shame in being overweight or losing muscle mass. It’s the fault of normal physiology. When it comes to the actual
32

treatment program, there is no standardized protocol— the program is individualized to each patient. Once we see you have a hormonal imbalance, there are a variety of ways to fix that. Depending on your need, there are injections, ointments, pellets, creams, and other ways to treat the imbalance(s).
What is regenerative medicine? Regenerative medicine uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and human tissue products to address joint conditions, pains, and decreased mobility, which is another way we work to improve a patient’s quality of life. It’s really focused on developing and applying therapies to tissue and organ restoration. It’s a new field of medicine that’s going to change the world, and we’re just at the tip of it. For those of us who are pioneers in the use of various medical treatments for regenerative conditions, it’s a miraculous way to change lives.

directions 1. Preheat a large cast iron pot. 2. Add 4 tablespoons coconut oil until melted and silky hot. 3. Add the finely chopped onions, stirring frequently until golden brown. Add the garlic and ginger pastes and stir for a minute. Add the coriander and turmeric powder and stir well for another minute. 4. Gently add in a can of crushed tomatoes or 2 large, diced tomatoes (with seeds). Cook on medium heat for 2 minutes. 5. Stir in the lentils. Pour in 3 cups of water. Bring to a low boil. Add a tablespoon of salt and stir well. 6. Gently pour in the coconut milk and the cilantro. 7. Cover the pot, lower heat to a simmer, and cook until the lentils are soft (about 30 minutes). 8. When ready to serve, make the tadka by heating up 2 tablespoons of oil in a small skillet on high heat. Add the tadka (mixture) into the lentils and cover the lid immediately. Let sit for 10 minutes while the tadka infuses the creamy lentils. 9.
