LIFESTYLE LETTER
What will make your season bright? The holidays have arrived, and around every corner of Portland is the opportunity to get in a festive mood. It's my absolute favorite time of year (and my birthday month!), so I love to make the most of every moment. There's nothing like reveling in the smells, tastes, sights, and sounds of the season to spark that nostalgic feeling. For me, it's the smell of freshly baked gingerbread, Andy Williams' version of "The First Noel," and Portland's downtown winter lights that make me feel like a kid again—a mood I wish we all could savor more often. We're bringing you some of those warm and cozy feelings with our December issue, and I hope you'll take some time in the hubbub and chaos to slow down, relax with the following pages, and really reflect on what makes the holidays special for you and your family. As you make plans for your time-honored traditions, I encourage you to create some new memories as well. Whether it's taking a day trip to one of Maine's coastal towns for its annual holiday celebration, staying closer to home with a fun-filled winter day right here in Portland, or discovering a unique way to present a charcuterie board at your next holiday party, perhaps we can provide you with a bit of inspiration. Finally, as we close out this year and look to the next, my greatest wish is that we can all remember that this time of year is difficult for many. Not everyone is looking forward to festive celebrations and making special memories. Each year in December the City Lifestyle home office and family of publishers put a call out to our readers to nominate someone experiencing hardship or loss so that we might help lighten their load and brighten their spirits. Turn to page 36 to learn how you can get involved with our annual Giving Campaign by nominating someone deserving. We just might choose them as one of our recipients, and what better way to feel the true magic of the season.

Portland Educator Named Maine’s 2024 Teacher of the Year
Portland Foreside Enters the Next Phase of Development
Joshua Chard, a second and third-grade teacher at East End Community School and the drama director at Deering High School, is Maine’s 2024 Teacher of the Year. With more than 30 years of teaching under his belt, Chard is known for his culturally responsive approach to the curriculum. According to Maine Education Commissioner Pender Makin, colleagues and parents describe Chard as “kind, passionate, generous, and someone who finds joy in the uniqueness of each human.”
The Portland Foreside waterfront project, the largest development project the city has seen in decades, is expected to be completed by 2030. The mixed-use neighborhood, which sits between Munjoy Hill and the waterfront, will include space for more than 60 businesses and 600 housing units. The 10-acre area will also feature a year-round fresh food market, 150 boat slips, a boutique hotel, workspaces, restaurants, and outdoor spaces that promote communal gathering. portlandforeside.com

Say Cheese CRAFTING THE PERFECT CHARCUTERIE BOARD FOR EVERY KIND OF EATER
24
H OST IN G T IP S | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Charcuterie boards are a quintessential part of any modern holiday feast—they’re fun to put together, they feature a great mixture of sweet and salty snacks, and, let’s be frank: they look amazing on the table. Despite its versatility, the classic meat and cheese charcuterie board doesn’t typically take into account the variety of dietary restrictions and preferences of everyone attending a holiday gathering. Whether your mom has a preference for minimizing gluten or your grandfather doesn't eat meat, it's still possible to put together a platter that everyone will love. We asked Emma Martin and Sami Smart, co-owners of Revel Board + Beverage in Yarmouth, for their top tips on crafting grazing boards for eaters of all kinds.
VEGAN TIP: KEEP IT SIMPLE Sure, you can find tons of plant-based meat and cheese substitutes at the local store, but Martin suggests forgoing these short-cuts because they’re full of nasty additives (if you can’t be swayed, however, Treeline Cheese made from cashew nuts is a decent option). Instead, consider making your own cheese (there are plenty of fairly simple recipes online) or stick to items that are naturally vegan: think hummus, veggies, nuts, and fruit. Jazz up your board with blanched veggies tossed in olive oil, or give it a Mediterranean twist with marinated artichokes, mushrooms, and roasted red peppers. While vegan grazing boards are the most challenging of the bunch, they’re really not that hard. “Just don’t overthink it,” reiterates Martin.
GLUTEN-FREE TIP: MAKE CHEESE THE STAR When it comes to gluten-free charcuterie boards, simply swap out regular crackers and bread chunks for
gluten-free crisps like Simple Mills nut flour crackers or Crunchmaster Multi-Seed rice crackers. Then, turn your focus to the cheese: Martin suggests incorporating soft, semi-soft, and hard varieties in your board (her favorites are Brie, Camembert, Manchego, and Toscano soaked in Syrah). While you’re welcome to visit your local cheese shop, there’s plenty of variety to be found at Hannaford or Trader Joe’s.
VEGETARIAN TIP: AMP UP THE PRODUCE, BUT KEEP IT SEASONAL Vegetarian boards should feature a variety of produce along with dips, nuts, and crackers. “Strawberries won’t be looking great in the winter, so try pomegranates, persimmons, pears, and apples instead,” says Martin. Dehydrated, thinly sliced blood oranges add a pop of color to any board, as do Badger Flame beets which, when sliced, offer a crunchy bite that can replace boring crackers.
CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/P O RT L A N D M E
25
PESCATARIAN TIP: TINNED FISH IS YOUR FRIEND Whether you’re spending the holidays with fish-loving friends or you’re just looking for something lighter to snack on before a meatheavy dinner, a pescatarian board only takes a few minor tweaks. Instead of lining the board with cured meats, incorporate small bowls of smoked mussels, tinned fish, and smoked trout. Pair the salty goodness with rye crackers, lemon creme fraiche, and pickled red onions for the perfect savory bite.
REVEL BOARD + BEVERAGE revelmaine.com | @revelmaine Run by friends Emma Martin and Sami Smart, Revel Board and Beverage is a grazing table and bar service located in Yarmouth that focuses on tiered and flat grazing tables for special events, client meetings, or company parties as well as mobile bar services and custom to-go boards. Options include charcuterie, cheeses, crudités, smoked fish, bagels, and more, and boards can be customized to meet gluten-free, nut-free, or vegetarian/vegan dietary restrictions. Revel’s simple online ordering system makes it easy to customize your board and select add-ons.

Give Where You Live Julie Marchese with breast cancer survivors at the 2023 Tri for a Cure.
5 LOCAL BUSINESSES THAT SHOW THE BEST WAY TO MOVE FORWARD IS BY GIVING BACK ARTICLE BY BECCA ABRAMSON
CycleBar + Tri for a Cure At the heart of CycleBar is a passion for giving back to the community, and the studio’s CycleGives platform makes that easy by offering energetic indoor cycling rides for groups to help raise proceeds that benefit a selected cause. This unique form of cause marketing promotes health and wellness inside the studio, but CycleBar also gives back to the community by supporting the Maine Cancer Foundation’s annual Tri for a Cure. The Tri for a Cure is near and dear to the heart of CycleBar Portland’s owner, Julie Marchese, because she’s also the triathlon’s founder and race director. “Getting involved with MCF began when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, and myself in 2003,” explains Marchese. “The triathlon is all about hope—we celebrate survivorship and the lives of those that have been lost.” Summer 2024 will mark Marchese’s last year at the helm, but she still plans to stay involved with the organization that has given her—and others in the community—so much support. “I’m so glad that I have played a part in an event that has made such a difference for people with cancer in Maine,” Marchese says.

Lucy Tucker at the podium for MBH's annual Signs of Hope fundraiser.
Lucy Tucker from Keller Williams Realty + Maine Behavioral Healthcare
“Children need to know that they’re important, that they’re needed, and that being unique is a gift.” — Lucy Tucker
“I believe it’s really important to give where you live,” explains Lucy Tucker of Keller Williams Realty. During her six-year tenure on the Falmouth School Board, Tucker saw firsthand the importance of mental health awareness in the community. “During my last year on the board, there were four suicides in Cumberland County. I said to myself, ‘This should not be happening,’” Tucker recalls. “Erasing the stigma around mental health is so important, especially in the vulnerable 14 to 28-year-old group. Children need to know that they’re important, that they’re needed, and that being unique is a gift.” At the time, one of Tucker’s clients worked at Maine Behavioral Healthcare and introduced her to the organization, which is the mental health arm of the MaineHealth system. She quickly joined the development committee, was asked to serve on the board, and eventually joined the executive board. “When you get a physical, it shouldn’t just be about your physical body. MBH raises awareness about mental health, how important it is, and how it touches and impacts so many different parts of our lives,” says Tucker. “There isn’t one person in this world that isn’t touched by it.” One of Tucker’s favorite parts about being involved with MBH is the variety of events the organization puts on to raise funds. “Our biggest fundraiser is Signs of Hope,” she says. “We dedicate the money raised each year toward a different cause under the MaineHealth umbrella, and we have a speaker who has been affected by the cause come talk to our audience. At this year’s event, a local woman named Joielle, who has been her family’s coordinator for various behavioral health issues for more than two decades, explained how her husband suffers from schizophrenia and her two daughters live with varying degrees of anxiety. “Joielle described her journey in very candid details that demonstrated the challenges she faced as a young mother with a growing family and dealing with her family members’ mental health issues, but also recognizing her own battles with PTSD from her personal upbringing,” explains Tucker. This year’s Signs of Hope event raised almost $180,000 to help provide care for people with complex behavioral problems across the state of Maine, regardless of their ability to pay. Rytualist's team at the 2022 GOTR 5K.
Rytualist + Collect the Cotton + Girls on the Run “As part of our mission, we wanted to give a portion of our profits to organizations that support the empowerment and self-care of women and girls,” explains Bonny Rollender, the founder of Rytualist Aesthetic Bar in Portland. “We understand that observers can view aesthetics and injectable cosmetic treatments as vanity, but we believe that everyone has their own sense of what constitutes selfcare for them. Some people may prefer hiking, others yoga, meditation, or professional grade skincare treatments and pampering,” she says. Rytualist works with a handful of nonprofit groups that focus on a commitment to selfcare and empowering women by providing access to both products and support. Collect the Cotton is one of these organizations, created by Ashlie Morris to bring awareness to period poverty and the need for accessible period products within specific communities. To support Collect the Cotton’s local efforts, Rytualist hosts annual drives and awareness campaigns on period poverty and the need for free menstrual products to be made available to young girls and women. Girls on the Run Maine, part of the national organization that helps girls and young women develop self-confidence and learn life skills in a collaborative environment, is another group Rytualist directly supports on a regular basis. Each year, the Rytualist team participates in the organization’s celebratory 5K and donates to their annual fundraiser. “This is another initiative that supports and builds the self-confidence, leadership, and physical and emotional strength of elementary and middle school girls,” explains Rollender. Rytualist is hoping to offer a course at Girls on the Run’s 2024 summer camp focused on body positivity and self-care, with fun activities like making their own basic skincare products to take home.

Two Lights Settlement Services + the Center for Grieving Children Two Lights Settlement Services marketing director Jenilee Bryant, who has a background in social work, was serving on the board of the Center for Grieving Children when she decided to get her employer on board. “We feel very blessed being in the real estate community,” she says. “I believe in philanthropy and giving back, and I think it’s important to support the community however we can.” Two Lights now acts as a corporate partner for the Center for Grieving Children, a nonprofit organization that provides a safe space, loving peer support, outreach, and education to grieving children, teens, young adults, families, and the community in Portland and Sanford. “The Center provides free counseling for grieving families, whether it’s children, parents, or teens, and they’re also involved in the school systems to provide services where needed,” explains Bryant. “I’m thankful there’s something like this available around here—grief isn’t talked about in a lot of families, and the grieving process looks different for everyone.” Mike Wilson (2022-2023 Board President), Anne Heros (CGC Executive Director), and Jenilee Bryant (CGC Board Member).
Two Fat Cats Bakery + Baking That Matters Started by Stacy Begin in 2020, the Baking That Matters initiative was developed to provide additional financial support to local non-profit organizations dedicated to uplifting and celebrating underrepresented voices in the Portland community. Two Fat Cats Bakery donates $2 of every Triple Berry Pie sale to a dedicated fund that is distributed to selected beneficiaries on a quarterly basis. This year, the bakery has donated to Creative Trails, an experiential community support program for adults with intellectual uniqueness; the Immigrant Welcome Center, which serves as a hub that helps strengthen Portland’s immigrant community through language acquisition, citizenship assistance, food security programs, business mentoring, and more; and the South Portland Food Cupboard, a group that provides groceries, donations, and other support to clients in the South Portland area.

It Pays to Plan Ahead Helpful strategies for year-end financial planning ARTICLE BY BECCA ABRAMSON AND AMELIA DOW With 2024 just around the corner, now’s the time to be sure you’re tying up any loose ends with your financials. Keep these tips in mind as the clock winds down on 2023.
TAX PLANNING Check in on your investments and consider if your portfolio has any capital losses that may be used to offset capital gains in order to reduce your overall annual tax burden. Know that if your compensation rate is variable, years with lower income often provide opportunities for taking more capital gains than higher earning years.
RETIREMENT CONTRIBUTIONS The 2023 IRS limit for contributing to a Traditional or Roth IRA is $6,500 (or $7,500 for those 50 and older). The deductibility of your contribution depends on your income. For 2023, employees participating in a 401K through their place of employment may contribute up to $22,500 (or $30,000 for those 50 and older).
ESTATE PLANNING Most people don’t enjoy talking about death or money with their families, but it’s important to do so. Gathering to celebrate the holidays offers a unique opportunity to dig deep into these difficult conversations. Year end is an ideal time to adjust your estate plan to accommodate any changes in your life and review the plan with your family.
GIFTING • If you would like to gift funds to an individual at the end of the year, you may give up to $17,000 per recipient in 2023 without being subject to gift taxes. Married couples may give a combined gift of up to $34,000 to the same recipient. • If you are age 73 or older and have not yet taken your Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA for 2023, you will need to do so before the end of the year. If you choose to donate RMD dollars directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization, the distribution will be excluded from your taxable income for the year, up to $100,000.

Revisit Your Budget • What expenses have accumulated during the year that you may not be using? Think subscriptions, streaming services, or gym memberships that fell by the wayside. • What are your current needs? Make note of fixed expenses like rent, mortgage payments, or car payments. • Do you have any upcoming expenses to plan for? Are there children, pets, travel, or large purchases in your future? • What resources do you draw from, and will there be changes to those in the next year? With just a little planning and foresight now, you can make some changes for your (and your family’s) future financial situation. Taking a few moments to finish 2023 strong will allow a great start to 2024!

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 36
I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
