Embrace the Spirit of Exploration!

In a world that often prioritizes efficiency and routine, the joy of exploration can be a refreshing change. This month, we're celebrating the thrill of discovering new places and experiences that enrich our lives and connect us more deeply to our surroundings.

Venture into the lush rainforests and pristine beaches of Costa Rica, a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Whether you're zip-lining through the canopy or relaxing in a hot spring, Costa Rica offers endless opportunities for exploration and wonder. For those who crave the excitement of off-road adventures, Creekside Offroad Ranch in Splendora, Texas, provides a thrilling experience for ATV enthusiasts of all skill levels.

The East Montgomery County Improvement District (EMCID) plays a pivotal role in enhancing our local community. Through initiatives that support economic development, education, and local businesses, EMCID is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents.

Exploration doesn't always require a plane ticket. Sometimes, the most rewarding discoveries are found in our own backyards. Take a walk through a local park, visit a new restaurant, or attend a community event. You'll be surprised at the hidden gems you can uncover and the connections you can make right in your hometown. Our local breweries are another fantastic way to explore and support our community. Each brewery offers unique, flavorful beers crafted with passion and creativity.

We hope that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration, even if it is just getting lost. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.

Happy Exploring & Happy 4th of July!

Costa Rica Explore

A JUNGLE OF BEAUTY AND FUN

Waterfalls, Oceans, and Volcanos, oh my! When thinking of a tropical paradise, all too often Costa Rica is forgotten. Just a quick 3-hour flight from Houston, Costa Rica offers beauty, adventure, and serenity for people of all ages. Last summer, we visited Costa Rica in two capacities: with and without children. Both were incredible experiences!

Costa Rica offers a handful of all-inclusive resort options for those seeking convenience with a touch of luxury, but there’s also the option of regular hotels that cater to all budget ranges. Our trips commenced in the Guanacaste region of the country. We experienced both a family-friendly and an adults-only all-inclusive resort, and each stay was unforgettable in its own unique way. The level of service was some of the best encountered – service that rivals Mexico resorts. We were welcomed by howler monkeys and white-faced monkeys. The kids were ecstatic! The beaches are dark, volcanic sand calmly lapped by beautiful light blue water – a perfect contrast, and the best place to frolic, snorkel, or sun.

Adventure is always at the top of our list when traveling, and Guanacaste offers a plethora of options: waterfall chasing, river tubing, zip-lining, hiking, exploring cloud forests, walking on hanging bridges, enjoying mud baths, relaxing in hot springs, witnessing geysers, horseback riding, and so much more.

With our adult-only stay, we ventured to the Arenal section of the country, and it was a true tropic lovers utopia. After a 3-hour, twisting drive from the airport, we were welcomed with so much beauty.

The landscape is lush with vegetation with a dormant volcano as the main feature. Our resort was true luxury; one of the most beautiful places we’ve stayed, offering next-level service. Every day, we found time to explore the property and view the wildlife. Sloths, toucans, vipers, frogs of all kinds, and monkeys peppered the grounds. We scheduled a couples massage, and it was like a dream. The sun had set, and the mood was dark and seductive. As we slipped onto the tables in the outside treatment area, a thunderstorm rolled in. Pure Relaxation with the rain hitting the roof, the thunder rumbling, and hands of magic massaging away all the day’s travel stresses.

We could have stayed at the resort all day and been content. Our room was teeming with tropical trees that created a private space. A plunging hot spring was right off our back door, but we didn’t just sit around. With all the waterfalls offered, we had to take advantage of them. A quick trip up the mountain took us to meet a tour company that strapped us in and sent us rappelling down - sometimes over 200 feet of descent. If that wasn’t enough excitement, we also rafted some white water. Costa Rica offers a range of rapids from slow to intense rafting, but we stuck with the lower level for our first trip.

If you’re looking for your next adventure, Costa Rica is phenomenal for both adults and children. My family can't wait to go back!

EMPOWERING

Prosperity

THE TRANSFORMATIVE VISION OF EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (EMCID)

In an effort to enhance opportunities along Highway 59, deter annexation by the city of Houston, and safeguard local firefighters' jobs, members of the local chamber of commerce lobbied state legislators to establish the East Montgomery County Improvement District.

Established in 1997, EMCID emerged as a pivotal entity committed to catalyzing economic growth, bolstering community development, and fostering educational opportunities across the eastern region of Montgomery County.

With continuous expansion in mind, EMCID helps provide jobs for the community, advertising local businesses on social media and amplifying job postings free of charge. The Improvement District is looking forward to bringing a new 218,000-squarefoot conference space to the area which will attract new businesses, restaurants, events, and tourism. Additionally, they have recently purchased a 200acre property off of 1485 and Caney Creek which will become a dog park, hiking and biking trail, and a variety of other nature amenities.

Spanning across Splendora and New Caney ISD’s, EMCID understands that the youth of today is the future. To support their advancement, the non-profit subsidiary of EMCID, East Montgomery County Scholarship Foundation (EMCSF), provides a $1,600 scholarship or reimbursement to all high school graduates who graduated from a school within the district boundaries. EMCSF also offers 65 $500 merit scholarships per year to students who have at least 48 hours of college hours credited. Since EMCSF’s inception, over $8.8 million dollars worth of scholarships have been awarded to students.

Looking towards the future, EMCID's visionary endeavors continue to chart new horizons, with plans for the state-of-the-art conference space and expansive recreational amenities poised to further elevate the region's appeal and prosperity.

“We are unlike any other economic development organization... in the nation.”

With an unwavering commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and community-centric governance, EMCID stands as a testament to the transformative power of collective vision and proactive stewardship in shaping a brighter tomorrow for East Montgomery County. Welcome to a community where progress knows no limits, and possibilities abound—welcome to EMCID.

FAITH, FAMILY, AND FOUNDATIONS

THE JOSLIN DEVELOPMENT GROUP’S JOURNEY OF BUILDING TEXAS WITH HEART AND VISION

ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS

It all began around a kitchen table in Porter, Texas, 50 years ago. Ray and Gayle Joslin took a leap of faith and started Joslin Construction in 1973 when Curt was just 9 months old. Making a living in construction in the Houston market wasn’t for the weak of heart or mind. Leading by example, the Joslins instilled toughness in their kids along with an unwavering faith in God, and a great example of how to raise a family while running a business. After many years of working for and alongside his dad, Curt took over running the family business in 2004.

He saw significant growth enabling expansion into other construction-related businesses with some extraordinary partners; some of which are family, and others that might as well be! In 2018, Curt turned over the CEO seat of Joslin Construction to his brother-in-law, Shaun Dean, to focus on other family business ventures.

Leading their family and entrepreneurial endeavors with a steadfast faith in God and a lot of hard work, Curt and Jennifer Joslin founded the Joslin Development Group (JDG) with a vision to create unique pocket developments across Texas while

“LEADING BY EXAMPLE, THE JOSLINS INSTILLED TOUGHNESS AND UNWAVERING FAITH IN THEIR KIDS.”

keeping family values at the heart of their company’s framework. Together, they’ve always made sacrifices to maintain a balance between the two dynamics, always putting family first. The Joslins encouraged and instilled this discipline into their daughters Katelyn, Kristin, Paige, and Peyton as each of their girls currently has plans to operate their own businesses. The family believes that the entrepreneurial spirit may be contagious, but hard work, discipline, and faith are taught, and that making sacrifices today will be rewarded in the future.

Katelyn and Josh Voelkel own and operate Dreambuilder Homes Texas, combining Katelyn’s business degree and passion with Josh’s engineering degree to create beautiful custom homes. Kristin owns Neon Blonde Parlour, a spunky and fun full-service hair salon, located in Kingwood. Paige is currently working for a real estate firm in New Caney while obtaining her real estate license, and her twin sister, Peyton, is attending Texas A&M, pursuing a degree in Allied Health with plans to open her own birthing center.

Curt believes three key factors have been the building blocks in how the family operates their businesses and has helped integrate their values into daily operations: 1) Setting expectations and demanding results, 2) Setting goals and working towards them, and 3) Treating everyone with respect. One of the greatest advantages of having a family-owned business in the corporate world is that people enjoy doing business with real people. Clients have always appreciated and enjoyed the companies’ culture, values, and faith in their business practices and daily decisions.

With various developments across the great state of Texas, including a gated community in Washington County, and a large acreage development in Tyler County, the Joslin Development Group is excited to start their next development in East Montgomery County, with an announcement coming soon. The Joslin family focuses on making a difference in the community through various business endeavors, partnerships, and opportunities to give back. They are always eager to support local initiatives, especially those that are important to East Montgomery County.

JDG follows Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much will be required,” and feels that they are responsible for what God gives them. God has blessed their family to become a tool to develop businesses and communities, so they work to obey His direction and use their company to benefit others. Philanthropy can be considered the heart of their businesses, and they are always glad to support organizations and programs within the community they call home.

Nature’s

Trails, Mud, and Community: The Heart of Creekside Offroad Ranch

Playground

“AT CREE KSIDE, THE FUN BEGINS WHERE TRAILS FO R RIDERS OF ALLSKILL LEVELS.” THE PAVE MENT ENDS WITHNUMEROUS

Over the river and through the woods, Creekside Offroad Ranch provides over 350 acres of wooded trails to make muddy memories while exploring alongside Peach Creek in Splendora, Texas.

Adventure awaits at Creekside Offroad Ranch where owner, Cole Bishop, took his childhood memories in the great outdoors riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers, and turned it into a career. After graduating from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, Cole decided it was time to go back to his roots and returned to East Montgomery County to open an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) park. He started small with his first endeavor, Busted Loose, then explored the opportunity to make a change and expand with the growing interest which led to one of his greatest adventures to date: opening Creekside Offroad Ranch.

At Creekside, the fun begins where the pavement ends with numerous trails for riders of all skill levels. The ranch is home to many events throughout the year, including two separate Mud Festivals, live entertainment, races, and even Tough Mudder races. Outdoor enthusiasts travel from all over to navigate the sandy hills, muddy trails, red clay obstacles, and water holes in their ATVs, UTVs, jeeps, trucks, and dirt bikes. When guests are ready to clean off before settling in for the night at one of the ranch's tent or RV spots, or before making the journey back home, they can jump in Peach Creek or utilize the on-site bathhouse facilities.

Safety remains a top priority for all entering the ranch. As you enter the offroad park, all guests must fill out a release form before blazing their own trails on the path not taken. There are rules and regulations implemented to protect visitors while ensuring that all guests entering Creekside are able to get dirty and safely have fun.

Creekside partners with big-name brands like Polaris and Honda to showcase vehicles at the ranch, and also supports the local community through charitable giving, including sponsoring local Little League teams and cook-off teams. The ranch also invites food truck owners to set up during events throughout the year to help support local businesses and create a further sense of community for all guests. In addition to supporting the community, the Bishops work to support the environment. Creekside has a timber exemption, so the family is constantly planting trees to help keep the park full and ready for continued growth and exploration.

As parents to two young boys, family is the compass that guides the Bishops through nature’s wonders. They enjoy spending time together in the great outdoors and feel that some of their best memories have been made at their ranch. From packing up a picnic to grilling while watching the kids swim in the creek, they enjoy making memories that will last a lifetime in their piece of Texas.

If you’re looking to escape and explore nature or try something new leaving nothing but tracks in your rearview mirror, check out Creekside Offroad Ranch in Splendora, Texas at creeksideoffroadranch.com
