LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Magic We Make

There’s something about December that brings everything full circle. The hustle of the year begins to quiet, and for just a moment, the world feels softer. The lights glow a little warmer, the laughter rings a little louder, and even the air feels like it’s holding its breath in anticipation of something beautiful.

This season always reminds me that the true magic of Christmas isn’t found in the wrapping paper or the rush, it’s in the moments we make together. It’s the smell of cinnamon rolls in the oven, the sight of kids shaking presents under the tree, and the quiet pause when memories of loved ones fill the room with their familiar warmth.

As you flip through these pages, you’ll find stories that celebrate that same spirit, local businesses giving back, neighbors lifting each other up, and families creating traditions that remind us of what really matters.

So here’s to slowing down, savoring the season, and holding tight to the people who make life feel like home. May your holidays be full of peace, joy, and just the right amount of sparkle.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Porter City Lifestyle.

COMMISSIONER GRAY’S

ADOPT-A-COUNTY MILE PROGRAM

Commissioner Gray’s Adopt-A-County Mile Program is a litter prevention initiative designed to tackle litter in East Montgomery County. This program enables individuals, families, schools, homeowners associations, businesses, or private civic organizations to actively participate in the removal of litter from public areas.

Roadway clean-up programs do more than improve the aesthetics of area roadways. It also improves the cleanliness of area creeks, channels, rivers, and lakes. Uncollected litter along roadways flow into area storm sewer systems and eventually discharge into these receiving waters. Something as small as a soda can could clog a culvert and impact drainage.

The participating organization or group must coordinate with Precinct 4 to adopt their designated roadway. The organization coordinates quarterly clean-up times with the precinct and the necessary equipment including safety vests and trash bags will be provided. Take the initiative to do your part in keeping our community clean!

Contact us to adopt your county mile!

"This litter abatement program offers our community the opportunity to become active in reducing the tax dollars spent to clean county roadways. A cleaner Precinct 4 starts with all of us.”

The Gift That Gives Back

TAX-SMART STRATEGIES FOR MEANINGFUL CHARITABLE GIVING

BY FIREHEART PHOTOGRAPHY

Jim Carranza ChFC®, AAMS® Financial Advisor
Madison Duxbury CFP®, ChFC®, CRPCTM Financial Advisor
“Because helping a charitable group and getting tax benefits for doing so is a ‘win’ for everyone.”

As we enter the annual season of giving, you might be thinking of charities you wish to support. But you also might be wondering how to gain some tax benefits from your gifts.

It used to be pretty straightforward: You wrote a check to a charity and then deducted the amount of the gift, within limits, from your taxes. But a few years ago, as part of tax law changes, the standard deduction was raised significantly, so fewer people were able to itemize deductions. Consequently, there was less financial incentive to make charitable gifts.

Of course, this didn’t entirely stop people from making them. And it’s still possible to gain some tax advantages, too.

Here are a few tax-smart charitable giving strategies:

• Bunch your charitable gifts into one year. If you combine a few years’ worth of charitable gifts in a single year, you could surpass the standard deduction amount and then itemize deductions for that year. In the years following, you could revert to taking the standard deduction.

• Make qualified charitable distributions. Once you turn 73 (or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later), you must start taking withdrawals from your traditional or inherited IRA. These withdrawals — technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — are taxable at your personal income tax rate, so, if the amounts are large enough, they could push you into a higher tax bracket or cause you to pay larger Medicare premiums.

But if you donate these RMDs directly to a qualified charity, you can avoid the taxes. And

because these donations, known as qualified charitable distributions (QCDs), will reduce the balance on your IRA, you may have lower RMDs in the future.

Of course, if you need some or all your RMDs to help sustain yourself in retirement, the use of QCDs may not be of interest to you. Keep in mind, though, that you can start making QCDs at 70½, even before you must start taking RMDs. QCDs up to $105,000 can be taken in 2024.

• Consider a donor-advised fund. If you’re interested in a long-term charitable giving arrangement, you might want to consider establishing a donor-advised fund. You can put many types of assets into this fund, and then direct it to make grants periodically to the charities you’ve chosen. You get an immediate tax deduction for your contribution, and, if you donate appreciated assets, such as stocks, you’ll avoid the capital gains taxes you would have incurred if you simply sold the stocks and then gave the money to the charities. One note of caution, though — your contributions to a donor-advised fund are irrevocable, and once the assets are in the fund, you can’t use them for anything except charitable giving.

These strategies — QCDs and donor-advised funds in particular — can be complex and involve several issues of which you should be aware. So, you should consult your tax advisor before taking action. But if any of these techniques are appropriate for your situation, give them some thought — because helping a charitable group and getting tax benefits for doing so is a “win” for everyone.

Duty, Sacrifice, and Holiday Spirit

WHILE OTHERS GATHER, FIREFIGHTERS REMAIN READY TO PROTECT THE COMMUNITY THEY LOVE.

When most families are gathered around the table or watching Christmas movies in their pajamas, the firefighters of Porter Fire Department are on duty, ready to respond when emergencies strike. For these men and women, the holidays are as much about service as they are about family. We spoke with Porter Fire Department's Chief Carter Johnson and J.D. Fisher about what it means to serve during the most wonderful and sometimes demanding time of the year.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY TO BE ON DUTY DURING THE HOLIDAYS, WHEN MOST PEOPLE ARE HOME WITH THEIR FAMILIES?

Being away on holidays can be a bit of a strain, but in this line of work, you realize someone has to do the job. Someone must keep watch so others can enjoy time with family. This is my chosen profession, and it comes with certain sacrifices. Sometimes it’s just your turn to miss out on a holiday at home. Still, I’m proud to serve the community and be one of the people standing watch while others celebrate with their loved ones.

HOW DO YOU AND YOUR FELLOW FIREFIGHTERS KEEP MORALE HIGH WHEN YOU’RE WORKING THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS?

In the fire service, we spend about a third of our lives together eating, working, and living under the same roof. The firehouse becomes a second home, and our crew becomes a second family. We invite our families to join us for holiday meals at the station and celebrate together as one big fire family. Even when our loved ones can’t make it, we find comfort in each other’s company and

in knowing we’re not missing the spirit of the season, just experiencing it differently.

HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY HANDLE THE REALITY THAT YOU MIGHT MISS HOLIDAY TRADITIONS TO PROTECT OTHERS?

It’s tough. I’ve missed countless birthdays, dance recitals, school plays, and holidays over the years. My wife has gone to family gatherings alone, and my daughters have celebrated without me there. But they understand the importance of what I do. Someone has to be ready to help, especially during the holidays. My family shares that sacrifice with me, and I couldn’t do this job without their support. In many ways, they serve right alongside me.

WHAT GIVES YOU THE GREATEST SENSE OF PRIDE ABOUT BEING A FIREFIGHTER DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

Knowing that I live in a country filled with people willing to put others first. Firefighters across the nation give up time with their families so others can celebrate safely. That’s something special. It reminds me how blessed we are to live in a community—and a country—where service and sacrifice are still valued. America truly is a great place, and I’m honored to do my part to keep it safe.

WHAT DO YOU WISH THE COMMUNITY UNDERSTOOD ABOUT THE SACRIFICES FIREFIGHTERS MAKE DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

We like this job! Even though there are many things about it that are tough, firefighters will tell you, "This is the best job in the world", even during the holidays.

H-TOWN DREAM CENTER RESTORES FAITH, FAMILY, AND THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS.

Where Christmas Miracles Come Alive

“Every gift is more than a toy; it’s a symbol of hope, and every smile is proof.”

Every December, something extraordinary happens in Montgomery County. The H-Town Dream Center’s MoCo Christmas Bash transforms the Splendora Community Center into a winter wonderland, bringing holiday cheer with more than lights and laughter, but through healing, dignity, and the kind of hope that changes lives.

For Maria, last Christmas was nothing short of a miracle. Just six months before the Bash, she had escaped domestic violence and was living in her van with her four children. When she arrived at the event, tears streamed down her face as she told volunteers it was the most peaceful Christmas they’d had in five years. That night, Maria and her children were welcomed into the Dream Center’s House of Hope program. Days later, they moved into a tiny home, safe and warm. On Christmas morning, instead of waking up in a van, they opened gifts under a decorated tree, surrounded by love.

One generous supporter even adopted their family for the holiday, ensuring each child had something special to unwrap. It was more than a holiday celebration; it was a new beginning.

That’s the heartbeat of the MoCo Christmas Bash: restoring dignity, joy, and the belief that holiday miracles still happen. The MoCo Bash began 16 years ago with a simple dream: to make sure every child in Montgomery County experienced the joy of Christmas. Today, it’s one of the largest community events of the season, with hundreds of gifts distributed and thousands of smiles shared. This year’s theme, Disney Christmas, promises even more enchantment, with real-life characters,

festive booths, and Santa’s Sleigh ready for family photos.

Mike, a single dad, arrived last year holding his two young children’s hands. He had recently lost his job and didn’t know how he’d provide for Christmas. As his kids explored the toy room, their faces lit up, and so did his. Overwhelmed, Mike broke down in tears and said, “You didn’t just give my kids gifts, you gave me my dignity back.”

Every corner of the Bash is designed to create moments like that. From hot cocoa and cookie-decorating to face painting and music, it’s a celebration of community and compassion. Volunteers are the heartbeat of the event, dressing as elves and Disney characters, serving treats, and making sure every guest feels welcome. Jackson, a six-year-old in a red jacket, ran up to a volunteer last year clutching his new toy. “I prayed for this!” he exclaimed. What he didn’t know was that a volunteer had prayed that morning for every child to receive exactly what they needed. It was a full-circle moment that reminded everyone present that love is in the details.

Even volunteers leave changed. Sarah, who helped at the cookie station, said, “I thought I was here to give, but God used this event to heal parts of my heart I didn’t know were broken.” Today, she serves regularly at the Dream Center, her faith and purpose reignited.

At the MoCo Christmas Bash, every gift is more than a toy; it’s a symbol of hope, and every smile is proof that when a community comes together, Christmas becomes more than a holiday; it becomes a miracle.

Keeping Your Holidays Safe

MNM Fire Services Shares Tips to Protect Your Home and Business This Season

The holidays are filled with lights, laughter, and togetherness—but they also bring a rise in fire risks at home and in the workplace. From overworked outlets to dry Christmas trees, small oversights can quickly turn dangerous.

MNM Fire Services, LLC, which specializes in the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems across the Houston area, shares practical advice to help keep your season merry, bright, and safe.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON FIRE HAZARDS DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON?

Kitchen fires are the biggest culprit, followed by overloaded outlets, unattended stoves and ovens, and faulty or outdated Christmas lights.

WHAT SHOULD FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES KNOW ABOUT KEEPING LIVE CHRISTMAS TREES SAFE?

Keep trees well-watered so they don’t dry out, and place them away from fireplaces, candles, or space heaters. Check lights for frayed cords or damaged bulbs, and turn them off during the day or when you’re away.

WHAT DANGERS DO BUSINESSES OFTEN OVERLOOK DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

Decorations and wiring can be risky when the wrong extension cords or amperage are

used. Overloaded outlets and old bulbs are common hazards. Using an automatic timer for lights helps prevent overheating.

WHAT PROACTIVE STEPS CAN HOMEOWNERS AND BUSINESS OWNERS TAKE TO REDUCE FIRE RISK?

Educate family members and staff about fire safety. Show everyone where the fire extinguisher is and ensure smoke detectors work properly. Pets and children should be kept away from trees, and the base of live trees should always have plenty of water.

HOW DOES MNM FIRE SERVICES HELP PROTECT HOMES AND BUSINESSES YEAR-ROUND?

Regular inspections by licensed professionals are essential for sprinkler and alarm systems. Replace batteries in smoke detectors annually, keep at least one 2.5 lb. ABC fire extinguisher accessible, and have an evacuation plan with a designated meeting point.

Home for the Holidays— Safely

KEEPING HOLIDAY TRAVELERS SAFE WITH EXPERT SERVICE, HEART, AND COMMUNITY CARE.

As families prepare to hit the road for holiday gatherings, one local business is making sure the journey is just as joyful as the destination. Beckwith’s Car Care, a cornerstone of the Atascocita and greater Humble area since 1989, has built its reputation on more than just expert automotive service; it’s a story of grit, heart, and a deep commitment to community.

Shop founder Lynn Beckwith didn’t follow a traditional path into the automotive world. With a marketing degree and a job in advertising, Lynn took a leap of faith when her brother tipped her off about a vacant repair shop. Armed with credit cards and a love for engines, she opened Beckwith’s Car Care in a modest rental space. Thirty-six years, countless awards, and one pandemic-defying expansion later, Beckwith’s stands as a beacon of trust and excellence in car care within the community.

But what truly sets Beckwith’s apart isn’t just the stateof-the-art tools or the spotless shop floor, it’s the people. “My father told me to surround myself with people better than me,” Lynn says. “The ‘Beckwith Bunch’ is an amazing combination of technical skill and integrity.” That philosophy has earned the shop accolades like the Better Business Bureau’s Award for Excellence in both Automotive and Ethics, and a loyal customer base that feels more like family.

At Beckwith’s, the first family approach is especially evident during the holidays. Whether you’re heading to Grandma’s house or braving icy roads up north, Beckwith’s offers a complimentary digital vehicle inspection to ensure your car is ready for the trip. “Most drivers take good care of their vehicles, but it’s still a great idea to have it looked over before holiday travel,” Lynn advises. The inspection, performed by ASE Certified technicians, includes photos and detailed notes delivered straight to your phone or email, giving you peace of mind before you even pack the car.

One often overlooked detail? Windshield washer fluid. “It’s unlikely to freeze in Houston, but if you’re traveling north, it absolutely can,” Lynn shares. Beckwith’s checks all fluids and ensures your vehicle is winter-ready, no matter your destination. Their team also looks at tire condition, battery health, and other essentials that could make or break a holiday road trip.

While your car is being cared for, you’ll enjoy Santa’s preferred treatment, complete with fresh-baked cookies and a complimentary shuttle, because at

“From Toys for Tots drop-offs to free emissions inspections for veterans and first responders, the shop’s generosity reflects deep roots.”

Beckwith’s, comfort and convenience are always part of the customer experience.

Beyond the garage, Beckwith’s is a hub of holiday giving. From Toys for Tots drop-offs to free emissions inspections for veterans and first responders, the shop’s generosity reflects its established deep roots in the community. Lynn’s passion for education and advocacy also shines through her long-running radio show and blog called “That Car Lady.”

As the roads fill with holiday travelers, Beckwith’s Car Care reminds us that safety, service, and a little sweetness go a long way. After all, nothing says “home for the holidays” like a smooth ride complete with holiday classics on the radio and a warm cookie in hand.
