LIFESTYLE LETTER

It's the Most Wonderful Time of The Year!

December 2023 PUBLISHER

Rachel Burk | rachel.burk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Stacy Leach | stacy.leach@citylifestyle.com CONTR IBUTING WR ITER S

Stacy Leach, Kelsey Galloway

It's hard to wrap my head around the fact that 2023 is coming to a close already. The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. I find myself trying to cram all of the extra fun the season has to offer to bring a little extra magic for my children. A family favorite of ours is baking Christmas cookies and seeing all the beautiful, twinkly lights that decorate so many homes throughout the neighborhoods. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We are sharing several local businesses that bless our community with opportunities to celebrate with food and drink, entertainment, and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or companionship. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace, and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Wishing you all a peaceful holiday season and the best gift of all, time spent with loved ones.

Famous in a Small Town DR. MARY LOU FORD ARTICLE BY KELSEY GALLOWAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIREHEART PHOTOGRAPHY

Your hands brace against the cold gym floor. Your feet are spaced apart and flat on the ground. Just as a whistle blows, you pull your stomach up towards the sky and scuttle sideways after the soccer ball, trying not to step on the other players’ hands as you brawl for the ball. A vicious battle to win commences, with children scrambling to stay upright as they rush to score a goal. Welcome to crabwalk soccer in P.E. class at New Caney Elementary. We all know whose hand is holding that whistle, poised and ready to launch everyone into play: Dr. Mary Lou Ford. Those who had the privilege of being taught by Dr. Ford always saw her smiling and happy, but that when she gave directions, you got serious and got down to business. Dr. Ford is a bit of a local institution around town; she always found that the desire to promote health and wellness in her community is what drove her. She was the teacher who fashioned a fun environment that felt safe, and everyone remembered her because she created joy each day.

12

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | EN T E RTAI NME NT

“I have always believed in learning by doing and created active learning lessons in my PE classes.”

When Dr. Ford first began working for the district over 39 years ago, there wasn’t even a P.E. curriculum in existence. She created and implemented one herself. So impassioned about physical fitness and healthy living for those around her, she frequently went above and beyond the original job description, which is probably one of the reasons she received Teacher of the Year three times throughout her tenure, and now NCE celebrates her with a Dr. Ford Field Day each year. Obtaining her Master's and then going on to complete a PhD gave her options if needed, but she ultimately chose the students and staff. Before she retired, she was able to touch the lives of multiple people throughout the district as she wore 4 proverbial hats: PE Coordinator for the district, Wellness Coordinator for all the district staff, Fitness Gram Coordinator for the district, and, consistently, a PE teacher every day! To Dr. Ford, it was more than just PE; she was there quietly observing and striving to understand who each child was inside. If a student was pushing back or having trouble completing tasks, a punishment wasn’t just doled out, she tried to connect with each of her students and figure out what was going on inside as well. She recalls one student who was having trouble getting up off the floor during activities, which is uncommon for a child so young. Her observations ultimately led to his parents discovering he had a physical disability. Because of her proactive stance in the matter, this child was able to receive the help needed. Some of you probably remember being on the jump rope team in elementary, or perhaps playing Little League basketball? Dr. Ford created and implemented that jump rope team. She also, with the help of Peggy Beyer, created the basketball league for the community children which reduced the overall cost to play. Everyone remembers the colored t-shirts with the black numbers on the back. What team were you on?

Destination: Travel PLANNING AHEAD TO GET AWAY.

ARTICLE BY KELSEY GALLOWAY

Chilly weather and holiday music may not be your usual time to plan those warm-weather family frolics, but maybe it should be. A lot of popular destinations book up many months in advance, and plane tickets are often cheaper when bought ahead of time. With that in mind, we went to the experts to help you out. LTW Travel has been pulling off dream vacations and travel wish lists in this community since 2016 and knocking it out of the park every time. They have specialists in all-inclusive vacations, Destination Wedding planning, adult vacations, Group trips, and cruises, just to name a few.

Mrs. Bobbi Bodenhamer of New Caney has a great way to choose where her family’s annual vacation will take place each year. On Christmas, everyone in the family writes down where they would like to go for vacation and puts them all in a box. The one drawn is the destination they will go to. Last year the slip of paper read Hawaii! After trying to plan it herself, she reached out to LTW for help, and couldn’t be more pleased that she did. White sand, warm golden skin, and beautiful turquoise waters were just the beginning of the amazing adventures Mrs. Bobbi and her family had on the island, thanks to their travel agent’s diligent planning. Shark diving, a Luau, catamaran snorkeling tours, and even a Ranch Raptor Adventure! Delicious cuisine three times a day, with tons of snacks in between, gorgeous scenery that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world, magical sunsets, inactive volcanos, and lush tropical vegetation…in short, a trip of a lifetime! If you’re looking to plan your summer vacation, check out the tips from LTW Travel. CONTINUED >

The top 5 summer vacation destinations, according to the experts at LTW Travel:

1. MEXICO

4. EUROPE

If Mexico is calling your name, some of the most popular hotspots there are Cabo San Lucas, Puerta Vallarta, and Cancun, each with a variety of all-inclusive resorts to choose from.

Land tours and cruises through Europe are dream trips for many, and another great option to choose.

2. CRUISING

5. DISNEY AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

Cruising from Galveston or New Orleans is another popular option, with many cruise ships leaving daily throughout the summer from both ports.

Disney and Universal Studios. They are both immensely popular, and for good reason. However, they can be pricey, and a good travel agent can find the best deals to make it affordable AND fun.

3. HAWAII Hawaii is always a big one as well, with lots of choices among different islands. LTW has experts who consult with those planning a Hawaii vacation about precisely what they want from their vacation to help them determine which island best meets those dreams, as they all are vastly different. Just ask Mrs. Bobbi!

How Will You Give Back? LOCAL NON-PROFITS IN NEED ARTICLE BY KELSEY GALLOWAY

Every community is upheld by people helping people. Without these altruistic individuals giving their time and energy to improve the world around them, we would be in dire straits indeed. Our community is no different, and there are several local organizations that are working to make our world a better world. What each of these amazing organizations have in common is that they need your help to continue helping others.

NEW HORIZONS New Horizons is a non-profit that aims to provide vocational skills and training to individuals 16 and above with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They also work to maintain social and independent living skills, as well as connecting their patrons to various social and recreational activities to help broaden their horizons. If this mission speaks to your heart, there are many ways you can get involved. New Horizons is looking for volunteers to help at their resale shop, garden, skills training facility, special events, social activities, and Special Olympics. They also need help with funding and would appreciate donations of gently used home décor and furniture to be sold in their resale shop, a sponsored event where proceeds benefit New Horizons directly, or donations of money or in-kind services to help them to expand the community. https://www.ncnewhorizons.org/

H-TOWN DREAM CENTER

MISSION NORTHEAST

H-Town Dream center is a wonderful faith-based nonprofit that is doing their part to improve our community. They strive to help those who are impoverished and vulnerable. Their food pantry provides over 20,000 meals every week to those in need. Their House of Hope provides safe housing to women and children who are survivors of domestic abuse, human trafficking, or experiencing a crisis pregnancy. Their Community Center provides a safe space for under-resourced kids to come. They are asking for help, either by donating financially, advocating for them, or volunteers. https://www.htowndreamcenter.org/

A great local non-profit is Mission Northeast, established in 1995. At Mission Northeast, they provide food, clothing, household essentials, adult education, job training, onsite ESL and GED programs, and a monthly home delivery for those who are homebound. This organization does this all for no cost to the patrons and is run entirely off donations. They are desperate for donations of good food and personal care items. https://www.missionne.org/

Giving Campaign

2023 28

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
