Editor's Letter

Happy New Year, Perimeter North.

I

am writing this note from the back seat of the car, as my family travels home to Atlanta from Michigan after a holiday visit with my family. When I tell old friends up north that I live in Atlanta, most sigh jealously, thinking I eat barbecue and grits every day, walk around in shorts year around and rub shoulders with hip hop stars and famous housewives. It’s when I set them straight that they really grow more envious. I DO get to eat inventive and farm-fresh food from talented chefs in gorgeous restaurants all over Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. I rub shoulders with of Atlanta’s talented artists, like Athea Eberhardt (page 14). I get the inside scoop on rising recording artists like the young talent we feature in our Music Right Here story on page 20.

Atlanta has so much to call its own and we are thrilled to bring you just a taste in this month’s pages.

ur publisher, Jim Newman, lost his dear dad in October. Everyone at Lifestyle Publications knows how much Papa Jack meant to Jim and his kids, Lauren and Daniel. Jack A. Newman, age 95, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2014, surrounded by his family. Together with Marjorie “Jean” Newman, his wife of 67 years, Jack was the father of 8 children, and was blessed with 30 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. Jack was known for his great dedication to God, expressed through loving devotion to his wife, his family and the Catholic Church. He was an inspiring leader; he was faithful in prayer; and he brought his own unique brand of humor to every family gathering. He was not only an exceptional family man, he was also an Army veteran, athlete, and had a distinguished 50-year career in financial services. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and excelled in sports that included tennis, boxing and golf. As a young man, he won a city-wide tennis tournament, and in retirement, he was proud of a “hole in one” at Brookridge Country Club. He served in sales management with the investment management division of American Express, rising to the position of Regional Manager.

Around Town DUNWOODY’S NEW MANAGER Following a seven-month-long, nationwide search, the Mayor of Dunwoody has selected Eric Linton for the role of city manager. At press time, City Council was expected to approve his appointment. Mr. Linton is a Credentialed Manager with the International City/ County Management Association, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and is active in the American Planning Association, Georgia Planning Association, the Georgia City-County Management Association and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia. Mr. Linton is married to Cathy, his wife of 11 years, and together they have one son, Thomas. Mr. Linton holds a master’s degree in planning and also a Bachelor of Science in Operations Management, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Welcome to the community!

Students used a “design thinking” approach to the development of the project: they designed their own money, wallets and logos. The students decided to donate the perishables used during the market to The Garden on Atlanta Road.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET Lower School Spanish students at The Lovett School prepared and displayed a Spanish fruit and vegetable market. Second graders were the sellers and third graders were the shoppers. This activity not only provided Lovett second graders the opportunity to practice their learned vocabulary on the fruits and vegetables, their properties and cost, but allowed the third graders to use their math skills to stay within a budget using dollars and cents in the target language. 10

Lifestyle Publications lost a friend and collaborator when Heather Green Levine passed away in November. Heather was the creator and owner of Beauty Bar of Buckhead, celebrating the one year anniversary of the business before she passed from an extended illness. Born in Waco, Texas, she launched a real estate business and served the community there on a handful of boards and was a strong advocate for supporting victims of domestic and sex abuse, veterans, mental health, cancer, diabetes and LGBT rights. Having a knack for creativity, Heather left the world of real estate in pursuit of her greater love, the beauty industry. Heather honed her craft for beauty while working with top brands in the industry selling cosmetics, and launching her own line. Heather is the creator of the concept, Stop Light Makeup, conceived for a woman on the go. As a gifted make-up artist, Heather also worked as a salon manager for one of the top five salons in the United States. At Beauty Bar of Buckhead, she created the Blow and Glow World for women like herself and men who enjoy pampering. Inspired by the trendsetting styles of timeless brands like Chanel and Dior, Heather stopped at nothing in her custom design and Italian custom architecture creating her own house of beauty. She is survived by her husband Abe Levine of Sandy Springs, her parents and step-children.

Locally Owned of loved ones in my home. Diving in to my resolution head-on, I questioned Siraj about current trends in framing and what is on ALL our minds: What makes for a custom framing job that we’ll love for years to come? Q: What are current trends in framing? A: Currently distressed finished and hardwood frames are in and our customers love that ‘beachy’ look. In the last year, our moulding vendors have come in with lacquer finished frames which are simply gorgeous. Something that is not in vogue in the USA yet, but is big in Europe and many other countries is metal frames. We carry a lovely line! Somehow we Americans think of metal frames as cheap which is incorrect. Q: What are the most common items you frame? A: We often frame family and vacation pictures along with sports jerseys/ memorabilia and concert posters. Atlanta also loves to frame their children’s artwork.

New Year’s Resolution:

Frame Those Photos!

Q: Why is framing a wonderful idea for gift giving, including birthday and wedding gifts? A: Framing makes the ideal gift because when you frame a picture or a memento, it preserves a memory. We frame wedding dresses and on a couple of occasions we have framed all together a picture of the bride and groom, the wedding invite, the Champagne bottle and engraved champagne glasses. We have customers who like to frame the wedding invite, which becomes a lovely gift for the newlyweds. At Christmas time, framed family photos make great gifts. We carry a line of ROMA picture frames made in Canada with Italian woods, and they make amazing gifts. We carry something that very few framers have, gold and silver leafed ‘Closed Corner’ frames. These are out of this world, 22 carat gold leafed and real silver hand leafed frames. These frames take your breath away.

riving through Chastain Park, it’s easy to see the impeccable taste of Buckhead’s residents. Gorgeous homes greet the New Year with freshly manicured lawns while framed boxwood topiaries adorn front doors. Peek inside these homes, and you’ll see beautifully framed artwork and family photographs, courtesy of Tuxedo Frame Gallery. Tuxedo Frame Gallery, a locally-owned framing business in Buckhead, has serviced the needs of a loyal fan base for over 24 years by providing impeccable workmanship and unique designs. Siraj, the owner since 1990, emphasizes excellent customer service. Customers seem to agree. “Several of our customers bring in their art and leave it at our discretion, totally relying on us to frame it. This trust in our services is a testament to our business,” notes Siraj. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to actually print some of the many photos stored on my laptop and update the pictures

Q: As an artist and a specialist in the field, is there any unusual or significant framing job you can share with us? A: We do unusual projects all the time. One I remember as being really unique was this huge American flag, about 10 feet tall. Sports fans will remember Skip Caray, the famous sports commentator. When he passed away in 2008, this US platoon in the Middle East presented Skip’s wife with a flag that flew at their base. That flag was about 6 feet wide and 10 feet long, accompanied by a letter and certificate to honor his memory. His daughter, who is a wonderful designer, brought it to us to frame. That was a challenge because of the size. Getting it smoothly sewed on to the mat was tricky. Once complete the frame was so huge it would not fit through our shop door. That was a beautiful frame, and gift, no doubt. TuxedoFrameGallery.com 3800 Roswell Rd

Making Music

Right Here

Hannah Zale Toland

ARTICLE CASEY HAMILTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

J

ustin Beiber. Janelle Monae. Outkast. These are all familiar names commonly attributed as products of the prosperous Atlanta music scene, which has consistently maintained a steady presence, if not omnipresence, on American pop radio in spite of well-documented changes in music trends, sales and sounds. Atlanta’s ability to produce promising artists doesn’t seem to be changing anytime in this new year, given our recent discovery of these local acts on the brink of becoming Georgia-grown music greats. Hannah Zale Toland, now known simply as Zale, was once a nanny. Today she’s a fiery combination of soul, grit and Jack Daniels Honey. You may have heard her playing at Steve’s Life Music in Sandy Springs or at Park Bench in Buckhead during the last year. “I love the music scene in Georgia. There are many opportunities for singers 20

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | January 2015

and song writers to showcase their original material, as opposed to some places that only want to hear covers.” Zale’s mix is best displayed than described, particularly on “Maze,” the singer-songwriter’s guitar-led melodic, melancholy ballad that showcases Zale’s sharp vocal. “I wrote ‘Maze’ about dealing with the aftermath of an addiction. I wrote it for my brother who struggles with an addiction problem. It’s about picking up the pieces of your life and making it whole again.” The University of Georgia alumni will release her debut album Fortress this spring, her first effort as a solo act following the breakup of Boomfox, her college band of five years. “Fortress is an eclectic mix of soulful ballads and 60s-inspired, cheeky rock and roll. I think there’s a song for everyone on the album. It took me my whole life to write it and only two weeks to record it. It’s a rock-

er-vibe with some Americana in there, too. It’s got a little bit of weirdness in there. Just like me, “ says the Warner Robins-native. “It’s called Fortress because there’s a lyric in the first song on the record that says ‘I am a fortress, a gated desert island. It tells my audience that not only have I built a fortress around myself in the past year making this record but I’ve built myself into a fortress made up of different genres of music and into this structure that no one can break.” Zale is currently on a promotional tour in advance of the record’s release and may be found performing around the Southeast over the winter. “I just want to be able to get my music out to people that want to listen. That’s the goal--to play my music every single night to people that care to listen to it while making money doing it. And to empower other women out there and tell their stories,” Zale says.

Krysta Nick

Zale

“I grew up as a teenager playing music in Athens and the rock scene and community there really helped make me who I am today as a musician. I really feel like some of the messages in my music empower young women to be strong and be who they are. I hope to show them [women] that you don’t have to look like everyone else or sound like everyone else to make it.” For more information on Zale, visit HannahZaleMusic.com. KEEP AN EAR OUT FOR THESE LOCAL ARTISTS ON THE RISE.

Revel in Romance has the type of credentials few are afforded at this early stage of a career. They are currently ranked as the number one rock band on ReverbNation and have opened for talents as major as Josh Groban and The Band Perry. Their recently-released EP, Stripped, features production from Jan “Mama J” Smith, who holds names such as Usher and Matchbox 20 on her extensive roster of clients.

It helps that that the group has talent to match such a lofty resume as evidenced songs like “Things We Don’t Forget,” a climatic clash of somber and splendor with a lead vocal possessing the ability to scale as big or small as needed throughout the four minutes of gloom and grandeur. For more on Revel in Romance, visit RevelInRomance.com Recently billed as “the little rapper with the big heart” following a self-produced music video that tributes his younger sister living with Down syndrome that went viral, Atlanta-born Mathew David Morris, or MattyB, certainly carries a buzz larger than his 11-year-old frame. To add to this, the YouTube sensation has more than 1 billion views, nearly 3 million subscribers and has graced the stages of The Today Show, EXTRA, The Queen Latifah Show and Wendy. Visit MattyBRaps.com for more information on the fifth-grade singer/rapper.

Lexi Noel seeks to see her name mentioned among the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga in talks of pop divas. She already has the dance floor anthems (see her trance-dance single “Boys”), the colorful costumes, larger-than-life music videos, and apparently, production budget of a female pop superstar. For more information, visit LexiMusic411.com. Having a Wikipedia page may very well be the 2015 definition of success. If so, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the four sisters (Kathryn, Annika, Fiona and Petra) that make up alternative folk band von Grey pictured alongside. Next to this achievement, von Grey boasts crystal-clear harmonies that lead against a folksy backdrop of violins, banjos and cellos. For more on von Grey, visit VonGreyMusic.com.

Coworking

Works Roam Dunwoody

ARTICLE RUKSANA HUSSAIN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

ork from home, telecommute, freelance, start-up…if any of these describe your current professional status or work arrangement, then add “coworking” to your vocabulary. The concept of holing up outside a traditional office, with your laptop, phone and earbuds to get your work done in a common space is relatively new. Think coffee shop meets Mad Men where productivity, creativity and self-motivation are the name of the game. There are a handful of these cowork spaces in Atlanta, from Decatur to West Midtown and right here in Dunwoody. Roam Dunwoody was established to create a meeting and gathering experience for this new workforce, dedicated to people on the move, who need a better way to connect with others, work productively and grow their businesses. 22

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | January 2015

Cowork spaces offers a wide selection of private meeting rooms, open tables, private offices and a network of built-in entrepreneurs and professionals. Many host inspirational seminars, training and social networking events. Oh, and don’t forget all the coffee, filtered water and green tea you can drink. Locally bred companies such as weighted compression gear maker Titin, who garnered some interest and funding through ABC show Shark Tank, online education company Edevate, and protective sports apparel manufacturer Evoshield are all members at Roam, which currently has 350 businesses utilizing their Alpharetta and Dunwoody workspaces. Companies can stay as long as they want, most members being month-to-month

tenants who utilize the shared workspace in order to scale and grow their businesses. Established in March 2013 as a sister location to the first Roam venue in Alpharetta, Roam Dunwoody, or Roam 2 as the regulars call it, is the place for not just high-tech and software firms but also homegrown entrepreneurs, consultants, small-business owners and nonprofits who want to avoid the high fixed cost, inflexibility and personal guarantees associated with fixed office space, while still having an innovative, fun and professional workspace to meet and collaborate with clients or co-workers. These companies need access to “business class” Wi-Fi, state-of-the-art technology and an ecosystem that supports small businesses.

A need that was quickly observed by the five original investors in Roam, who worked for IBM at the time, and found the city lacking in a workspace solution that catered to their needs. They decided to design a purpose-built product that would meet the needs of all people who wanted to have an option of working out of their home, which can be lonely, or coffee and sandwich shops, which can be too loud and distracting for meetings or collaborative work sessions. Roam is also a hub for Atlanta metro companies who have telework programs and participate in the Clean Air Campaign, and are committed to improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion in the city. Depending on the level of service needed, membership prices range from $99 to $299 per month. They have plans for two new locations – Cobb Galleria, opening in April, and then Buckhead, launching in May. Corporate offices in the area also use the Roam premises for offsite meetings, breakout sessions and

social events. It is a welcome change to the predictable and traditional hotel meeting space. Non-members can rent out meeting rooms as well. “We are excited to now have a presence in Atlanta’s four core business markets. As a result, we believe that we have quadrupled the value of the offering,” says Managing Member Peyton Day. Membership packages can accommodate up to six members on a single plan. Many companies have outgrown that limit and eventually moved on, paving the way for new entrepreneurial efforts at Roam Dunwoody’s 16,250-square-foot collection of meeting rooms and work niches. Located on the second floor of the Perimeter Pointe retail above Office Depot and LA Fitness, it’s one of several metro Atlanta facilities creating a new kind of office for workers learning to do business in a different way, afforded by new technologies such as smartphones, laptops, Wi-Fi connections and more. So, are you ready to Roam?

Five for ’15 ARTICLE RHIANNON BANKES

he Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta’s Book Festival began 23 years ago and fea-tured three authors in three days. This year the festival spanned 19 days, featured more than 40 of the year’s most talked about authors, celebrities and influencers, and welcomed more than 10,000 visitors. The festival featured engaging speaker programs, author meet-and-greets, panel discussions and book signings, and has become one of the community’s most anticipated cultural events. Here are five books from the festival we highly suggest you should put on your 2015 reading list: Still Life With Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, opinion columnist, and New York Times bestselling author Anna Quindlen returns with a deeply moving and often very funny story of unexpected love and the changing dimensions of a woman’s life.

The Andy Cohen Diaries by Andy Cohen: Host of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, and executive producer of “The Housewives ” franchise, Andy Cohen has a front row seat to an exciting world not many get to see. In this dishy, detailed diary of one year in his life, Andy goes out on the town, drops names, hosts a ton of shows, becomes codependent with Real Housewives, makes trouble, calls his mom, drops some more names, and, while searching for love, finds it with a rescue dog. This funny book is a one-of-a-kind account of the whos and whats of pop culture in the 21st century. 10% Happier by Dan Harris: Co-anchor of Nightline, Abc News and the weekend edition of Good Morning America, Dan Harris had always believed the restless, relentless, impossible-to-satisfy voice in his head was one of his greatest assets. For a while, his strategy worked. Harris anchored national broadcasts; he covered wars. Then he made a series of poor decisions in his personal life that culminated in a televised panic attack in front of an audience of millions. What happened next was completely unforeseen. Through a bizarre series of events, Harris discovered something that helped him tame the voice in his head: meditation. 26

Truth Be Told by Hank Phillippi Ryan: Former on-air reporter for Atlanta’s WSB-TV and award-winning author, Hank Phillippi Ryan is back with another installment in the bestselling Jane Ryland and Jake Brogan series, this one be-ginning with a middle-class family evicted from their suburban home. In digging up the facts on this heartbreaking story—and on other foreclosures— reporter Ryland soon learns the truth be-hind a big-bucks scheme and the surprising players who will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep their goal a secret. Turns out, there’s more than one way to rob a bank. How About Never, Is Never Good For You? by Bob Mankoff: People tell Bob Mankoff that as the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, he has the best job in the world. With the help of his funniest, most beloved cartoons, he traces his love of the craft, allowing us into the hallowed halls of The New Yorker to show us the soup-to-nuts process of cartoon creation, giving us a detailed look not only at his own work, but that of the other tal-ented cartoonists. Throughout the book, we see his commitment to the motto, “Anything worth saying is worth saying funny.” photo by davina pardo

Several upcoming book talks and signings are planned for the beginning of 2015 at the center, including Anita Diamant, Scott Stossel and Laura Lippman. For more information about any of these events, please visit AtlantaJCC.org/BookFestival

The Importance of a List A REVIEW OF COLLEEN OAKLEY’S DEBUT NOVEL, BEFORE I GO REVIEWED BY RHIANNON BANKES

Atlanta resident, Colleen Oakley’s debut novel, Before I Go, explores the question:

What would you do if you knew you were dying?

B

eginning the second semester of her master’s program in community counseling at the University of Georgia, Daisy has chosen and discarded six thesis topics and still doesn’t have one. This has become the top item on her to-do list and she plans to make a final decision after celebrating her “Cancerversary” with her husband, Jack, who is about to obtain

a dual doctorate in veterinary medicine. Breast cancer-free for three years, Daisy is ready for the “all clear” from her doctor, but is instead hit with a devastating blow. The day before her “Cancerversary” she learns that her cancer is back and it has spread with a vengenance. Twenty-seven-year-old Daisy now faces a stage four diagnosis and four months

to live. Struggling to deal with daily life in the face of the ticking clock, she tries to maintain a sense of normalcy. When the windows begin to leak in their house, Daisy adds “buy caulk” to her list. Annoyed by the floorboards, she adds “call flooring repair.” Each mundane task keeps her focusing on the day at hand but not the future. Realizing that her husband will be alone, and convinced he will drown in a sea of dirty socks and eat cereal for every meal, she sets out to find Jack another wife. She looks online, in her yoga classes, and searches a variety of UGA and Athens locations. While having coffee at Jittery Joe’s, sitting in the Tate Student Center, and catching the university bus to the psychology building, Daisy searches each woman and develops her list of criteria for Jack’s wife. One prospect turns out to be a little too perfect. Suddenly Daisy finds herself overwhelmed with sadness and asks herself if she should sacrifice her own personal happiness in order to follow through with her plan. Dealing with such a heavy topic, the novel is not as depressing as expected and is actually quite witty. Daisy’s dark humor and comments make her authentic and relatable: “that’s the problem with being a psych major. I can’t just have feelings like normal people. I have to try to under-stand them. It’s exhausting.” Author Colleen Oakley is spot on with Daisy and Jack’s relation-ship idiosyncrasies. She creates a bittersweet world with two characters sharing their final days together, facing the future knowing that one of them will not be around to experience it with the other. Colleen Oakley’s articles, essays, and interviews have been featured in The New York Times, Ladies’ Home Journal, Marie Claire, Women’s Health, Redbook and Martha Stewart Weddings. Before I Go releases January 6 with a celebratory launch party that evening. For more information visit the author’s website ColleenOakley.com

Parting Thoughts

Going Forward, I’m Going Local WORDS LISA HARRISON

I

have a new found appreciation for buying local. I apologize if I’m late to the proverbial party, but those who know me well know this is not unusual. For quite some time, this publication has been spotlighting small, locally owned businesses in our community as well as area restaurateurs who focus on buying local, but still, the concept had not fully sunk in for me. Then I heard some statistics that stuck with me. Maybe I’m more of a numbers girl than my former math teachers were willing to admit! I learned recently that for every $100 spent at a big box or national chain store, roughly $13 remained in the community. But when the same amount was spent at a locally owned establishment, closer to $45 remained in the community. Shopping online keeps zero dollars in the local economy. Sorry Amazon. It was nice knowing you, but the few dollars I save will make an important difference when they are invested back into this community that I love. It should come as no surprise then that the vast majority of the advertisers in the magazine you are now enjoying run local-

ly owned, independent businesses as well. Without their support, there would be no Perimeter North Lifestyle magazine. These are the same business owners who have supported us since we launched Perimeter North Lifestyle in 2012. All in all, I have more reasons than I need to put my shopping dollars into locally owned businesses as often as I am able going forward. I hope you’ll join me Lisa Harrison is the National Editor of Lifestyle Publications, and Editor of four Lifestyle magazines.
