Make a Statement!
September 2026 PUBLISHER
There's something powerful about walking into a room and immediately noticing style that isn't trying to blend in. Maybe it's the bold jacket, the perfectly tailored suit, a pair of vintage boots, or a vibrant lipstick. Maybe it's a home with an unexpected front door color or a living room that feels effortlessly elegant because it reflects the people who live there instead of the latest trend. The best style always makes a statement. Not because it's loud, but because it's authentic. This month, we're celebrating style in all its forms, from fashion and beauty to architecture, interior design, and the spaces we create for the people we love. While trends come and go, true style has never been about following the crowd. It's about having the confidence to express who you are. I love seeing that confidence throughout our community. It's the local boutique owner who helps someone discover the outfit that makes them feel unstoppable. The interior designer who transforms a house into a reflection of a family's personality. The craftsman who believes every detail matters. The artist who sees color where others see a blank canvas. They all have one thing in common: they're creating something memorable. And isn't that what we're all trying to do? Every day, we make choices that tell our story. The way we dress for an important meeting. The way we welcome guests into our home. The way we present our business. Even the way we care for ourselves sends a message before we ever say a word. What statement are you making? I hope this issue inspires you to think beyond what's fashionable and instead embrace what feels true to you. Wear the color you've always been afraid to try. Add the piece of art that makes you smile every time you walk by. Refresh a room. Reinvent a look. Support the local businesses that help bring your vision to life. After all, style isn't about impressing other people. It's about creating a life that feels uniquely your own. Here's to making a statement that is unmistakably yours.

Call it the One-Piece Rule: one of this fall's most popular fashion trends, and also the smartest way to get dressed while somehow still being the simplest. Instead of piecing together five brand-new looks from scratch, real style now hinges on a single, deliberate anchor—one bold piece, worn with confidence, everything else kept quiet around it. It plays out beautifully across a full week in the life of a young professional. Monday morning starts strong. A tailored navy suit—peplum jacket and matching trouser cinched at the waist with a slim gold belt—sets the tone for a power meeting: structured, composed, and unmistakably in charge. The peplum hem does the talking here, so everything else underneath stays clean, quiet, and confident. By the time the big pitch rolls around later in the week, the whole mood shifts entirely. A burgundy leather peplum jacket takes over the room, styled down with a chocolate faux-leather miniskirt for easy, grounded contrast underneath. It's the boldest silhouette of the whole week, finished with a rich chocolate suede bootie for warmth, and proof that conviction, not just polish, is what actually gets a big idea across the table. WEDNESDAYFRIDAY Casual Friday leans into elevated denim: barrel-leg jeans, prized for their twisting front seam, paired with a golden silk blouse, leopard shoes, and a black belt with tiny gold studs. The rest stays deliberately simple, letting that one seam detail carry the whole look effortlessly through the day. After-work drinks call for shine. A crystal-embellished sheer shirt, oversized and cut like a starlit night sky, layers effortlessly over a soft, ruched mesh skirt for full monochrome polish— proof the rule works just as well once the sun finally goes down. Weekend, off-duty: a plush faux-fur jacket, worn loose and easy over a simple navy camisole and classic indigo denim. Texture becomes the statement here, no matter the season, closing out the whole week exactly where it began—one bold piece, quietly doing all the work.

MEET THE STYLIST
This Page: Stylist: Roxanne Carne
Stylist Roxanne Carne Roxanne Carne didn't set out to become a stylist so much as a translator, turning what a woman wants to feel into something she can actually wear. Hollywood-trained and based in North Dallas, Roxanne founded Roxanne Carne Personal Stylist in 2013 on a simple belief: style isn't vanity; it's strategy. She works across every layer of a client's life—closet, color, confidence, career—helping women walk into a room already looking like the answer. Today, she serves her fifth year on the Fashion Group International board as regional director, following four years on the AICI Chicago Midwest Chapter board.
But ask what she loves most about the work, and she won't mention the credentials. She'll tell you it's watching a client's entire relationship with her wardrobe change, sometimes in a single session—from overwhelmed to effortless, from "I have nothing to wear" to getting dressed without a second thought. For this shoot, she kept it simple and classic: a soft grey turtleneck, sleek black trousers, one piece doing the work. Exactly the philosophy she teaches every day. Roxannecarne.com

DON' T T E L L M A M A B A ND TWENTY YEARS OF MUSIC, MEMORIES, AND BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATTI FAULHABER

B ACK STAGE | L I FE + C ULT U RE
For nearly two decades, the Don't Tell Mama Band has been proving that great music has the power to unite people. Since its founding in 2006 by husbandand-wife team Glenn and Maria Lightford, the Dallas/Fort Worth-based band has grown into one of North Texas' premier live entertainment acts, earning a loyal following through exceptional musicianship, high-energy performances, and a commitment to creating memorable experiences for every audience. Together, Glenn and Maria built Don't Tell Mama from a shared passion for music and a vision of creating a professional band that would deliver the timeless
songs people love while making every guest feel welcome. Glenn, the band's trumpet player and vocalist, and Maria, whose talents on percussion, flute, and vocals bring another layer of artistry to the group, have worked side by side as equal partners, both musically and in building the band's success. Their collaboration has been the foundation of Don't Tell Mama's longevity and continued growth. Over the years, Don't Tell Mama has evolved into an impressive 11-piece ensemble known for its outstanding musicianship, dynamic vocals, and versatile performances. Their expansive repertoire spans more than six decades of music, featuring Motown, R&B, funk, soul, disco, classic rock, country, Latin, jazz, and today's Top 40 favorites. From weddings and corporate events to festivals, nonprofit galas, and private celebrations, the band delivers a full-production experience featuring powerful vocals, talented musicians, and a signature horn section that keeps audiences engaged from the first song to the final note. At the heart of Don't Tell Mama is a belief that music belongs to everyone. Their performances are designed to bring people together regardless of age, race, gender, or economic background. The band's diverse song selection creates a shared experience where multiple generations can celebrate together, dance together, and enjoy the universal connection that only live music can create. Whether performing for a large crowd or an intimate gathering, Don't Tell Mama creates an atmosphere where everyone feels included. The band's continued success is also fueled by its exceptional lineup of talented performers. Lead vocalist Joi Mei Clark brings powerful vocals and a commanding stage presence, while newest member Kera Lee adds fresh energy, soulful vocals, and a vibrant personality that complements the band's dynamic
sound. Her addition represents an exciting new chapter as Don't Tell Mama continues to evolve while staying true to the musical traditions that have made them a North Texas favorite. The current lineup includes founders Glenn Lightford (trumpet and vocals) and Maria Lightford (percussion, flute, and vocals); lead vocalists Joi Mei Clark and Kera Lee; Borden Byrd (guitar and vocals); James Martin (bass guitar); Blake McElroy (drums and vocals); Jim Collins (keyboards and vocals); Rich Wonders (trombone, guitar, and vocals); Jack Rowland (trumpet and vocals); and Taylor Duty (saxophone and vocals). Supporting every performance behind the scenes are Jim Duty, the band's sound engineer, and Charles Clark, the dedicated roadie who helps ensure each show runs smoothly. As Glenn and Maria continue leading the band into its next chapter, their mission remains the same: create unforgettable live entertainment that celebrates connection, community, and the joy of music. Nonprofit of the Month St. Andrew Methodist Church’s Prom Closet Has Been Making Prom Dreams Come True for Seventeen Years. For most high school students, prom is a cherished milestone filled with excitement, anticipation, and memories that last a lifetime. But for many families, the cost of a dress, shoes, and accessories can put that experience out of reach. For the past 17 years, St. Andrew Methodist Church's Prom Closet has been changing that. What began in 2009 as a mission project of the Women of St. Andrew has grown into one of the largest programs of its kind in the region. This year alone, 1,444 young women received everything they needed for prom at no cost. The idea was born when the daughter of one of the ministry leaders, who worked in a local school district, recognized a growing need among students who could not afford prom attire. The Women of St. Andrew embraced the vision, creating a boutique-style experience where girls could shop for a dress, shoes, jewelry, a handbag, and a wrap—all donated by generous community members. Since then, Prom Closet has welcomed students from hundreds of schools across Texas and neighboring states, including Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Exchange students from countries such as France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, and Thailand have also found their perfect dresses at Prom Closet.

"The need is great, but the impact on each girl and her family is immeasurable," said Rev. Allyson Johnson, women's pastor at St. Andrew Methodist Church. "No matter what challenges they may be facing, during the shopping experience they are surrounded by love, affirmation, and care." The program's growth has been remarkable. In its first year, Prom Closet served just 35 girls. Today, more than 700 volunteers help make the annual event possible, transforming church space into a welcoming boutique stocked with thousands of donated dresses in sizes 1 through 30. This year, shoppers chose from more than 5,000 dresses. Some had never been worn. However, the dresses are only part of the story. One young woman recently returned to donate the dresses she received through Prom Closet years earlier. Her family had been navigating financial hardship and the loss of her father at the time. She credits the experience with helping her attend prom and showing her that people cared.
Another memorable story involves a student who had been nominated for prom queen but couldn't afford a dress. Thanks to Prom Closet, she found the perfect gown and enjoyed a night she still treasures. Volunteers often find themselves equally transformed. Many describe watching a young woman stand a little taller and smile a little brighter after finding "the one" dress. Those moments are a powerful reminder that Prom Closet is about dignity, confidence, and belonging as much as it is about fashion. As St. Andrew Methodist Church celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, Prom Closet stands as one of many examples of the church's
enduring commitment to serving the community. For four decades, St. Andrew has sought meaningful ways to meet needs, build relationships, and share hope. Through Prom Closet, that mission continues—one dress, one smile, and one unforgettable prom night at a time. Donations of dresses, shoes, jewelry, handbags, and wraps are accepted year-round at St. Andrew Methodist Church, 1401 Mira Vista Blvd., just inside the church’s north entry doors. Prom Closet also relies on hundreds of volunteers each year, with opportunities ranging from personal shoppers and dressing room attendants to check-in teams and set-up crews. Whether donating a dress or donating time, every contribution helps a young woman feel confident, celebrated, and seen. Volunteer signups open in January 2027. Visit StAndrewMethodist.org/PromCloset to learn more.

HAIR EXTENSIONS: PRACTICAL ADVICE, MAINTENANCE TIPS, AND POPULAR TRENDS FROM A PROFESSIONAL STYLIST
24
H AIR CA R E | STYL E + BEAU T Y
“Evelyn Kershaw believes beautiful hair starts with education as much as technique.” Hair trends come and go, but one beauty secret has staying power. Once reserved for celebrities and special occasions, today’s hair extensions have become an everyday option for anyone chasing extra length, fuller volume, or simply a confidence boost. Hair extensions can transform your style without being noticeable. Choosing the proper technique and properly caring for them makes all the difference. Just ask Evelyn Kershaw, a hair stylist who has spent her career helping clients find their perfect look. With nearly four decades of experience under her belt, her own salon, and three generations of stylists in the family, Kershaw has seen extension techniques evolve from obvious add-ons to seamless, natural-looking enhancements.
If you’re considering extensions, Kershaw says the first step is identifying what works for your lifestyle, as each technique offers pros and cons. After trying countless methods, Kershaw says the most popular for all lifestyles is the weft technique. Unlike individual strand methods, weft extensions consist of rows of hair that are sewn, beaded, or otherwise attached to the natural hair in continuous sections. Because they distribute weight across the scalp, they often feel most comfortable while providing the impressive volume and length you seek. Weft extensions can also be customized for different hair types and styling goals, making them one of today’s most requested extension options. Getting beautiful extensions is only the beginning of the transformation. Keeping them healthy and maintaining their natural appearance requires consistent at-home care and regular salon touch-ups. When asked about the number one advice she’d offer clients for extensions maintenance, Kershaw immediately answered “brushing.” Having a quality extension brush and frequently using it helps prevent tangles before they become too difficult to remove. Supporting the hair near the attachment points also reduces unnecessary tension that could loosen the extensions over time. Proper washing techniques are equally important. Sulfate-free shampoos and ultra-moisturizing conditioners help preserve the quality of the extension hair without drying it out. Avoid aggressive scrubbing near the attachment points, and gently massage the scalp while allowing shampoo to flow through the hair instead. CONTINUED >
S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / P L A N O
25
One surprising maintenance tip Kershaw mentioned is sunscreen’s effect on the extension hair. In the summer months, it’s important to avoid using sunscreen that contains Avobenzone and Octocrylene, as they can discolor lighter extension shades, sometimes leaving unwanted pink or orange tones behind. Kershaw encourages clients to be mindful when choosing and applying sunblock around the hairline to protect extensions during long days outdoors. Moderation also pays off when heat styling. While many high-quality extensions can be curled, straightened, and styled like natural hair, using a heat protectant and keeping styling tools at moderate temperatures helps preserve softness and shine. Less heat means longer results. Regular maintenance appointments are equally essential. As the natural hair grows, attachment points move farther from the scalp and need professional adjustment. While it’s tempting to put off getting an adjustment as long as possible, having a regular schedule makes the extensions look more natural and easier to maintain. To help clients stay on schedule, Kershaw’s salon offers an extensions membership program that encourages consistent maintenance, making it easier to avoid waiting too long between appointments and keeping extensions looking their best year-round. Kershaw believes beautiful hair starts with education as much as technique. From expert color-matching to teaching clients how to care for their investment at home, Kershaw knows lasting results come from a partnership between client and stylist. With the right extensions, thoughtful maintenance, and guidance from experienced professionals, great hair doesn’t have to be left to genetics. “I’ll never sell you something just to make a sale if a treatment is not perfect for you.” VIO Med Spa Plano’s priority is earning each client's trust, not making a sale. Practitioners will never recommend a treatment or product unless they truly believe it’s the right fit for the client’s goals, skin, and long-term results.

Many people dread taking a professional headshot. Visions of rushed school photos and awkward mall shoots lead even the most confident of us to procrastinate when it comes to our headshots until too many years have passed. Despite this anxiety, most professionals need a headshot updated every three years and especially after major appearance changes, such as weight change or hairstyles. Thankfully, most of the work to create a great headshot rests on the photographer. The gear, the posing, and the editing are ultimately what transforms a regular photo into a compelling headshot.
That leaves only one thing left for you to prepare—and that’s what to wear. It can feel a bit like rocket science, but it can be distilled to just a few tips: wear something that fits well, will coordinate with many backgrounds and colors, and makes you feel confident. To find your best look, start by pulling items from your closet that fit perfectly. Avoid that too-snug suit or your pants that drag on the floor. Items that are too baggy or loose can also make you appear larger on camera, so aim for something that is tailored without being tight. From there, look at colors and patterns. Navy blue, jewel tones, soft neutrals, and muted earth tones are the best colors CONTINUED >

to wear for headshots. But keep in mind that using colors from your brand or that complement your background may also be a good match. You may consider wearing a branded shirt, but keep in mind that if you leave that company or brand, your headshot may not travel well with you. On the day of your session, make sure you’re well rested and well groomed. Professional hair and makeup may help add a layer of confidence, and your photographer should be able to suggest a great artist. Arrive in a simple outfit with your shoot outfit hanging and pressed. Take deep breaths and say, “Whiskey”! You’ve got this!
Here are a few additional tips and tricks when planning your headshot outfit. • Avoid bright white, neon colors, and busy patterns. White shirts can compete with a plain, white background, while neon colors and busy patterns may be challenging to coordinate with websites or advertisements. • Add items that create depth such as a suit jacket or cardigan. Don’t forget accessories like simple necklaces or bracelets, but avoid smart watches and other tech. • Don’t worry though if you are a glasses wearer—technology makes it easy for professional photographers to remove glasses glare. It’s generally suggested you wear your glasses for your headshot if you wear them more than fifty percent of the time. • Make sure you do a fit check in the mirror. Many people cross their arms or hold their hands in front of themselves for headshot portraits, so check these poses in the mirror to ensure your outfit doesn’t create a strange wrinkle or unflattering bump. Wear Colors That Truly
LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life.
KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.
CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.
THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cooltoned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.
BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!
PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly—wear what makes you feel beautiful.

Musician and Educator Ting-Wei Chang Makes Classical Music Inviting for All
ARTIST OF THE MONTH ARTICLE BY VALERIE MERRICK | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF JUNG-HSUAN CHU
Ting-Wei Chang, clarinetist, educator, and founder of the Lumos Ensemble, has been helping students improve their musical skills throughout North Texas. As this month's feature, we interviewed her about her thoughts on live classical music for children.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT AUDIENCES EXPERIENCE LIVE MUSIC?
Live music creates something that recordings simply can't—it creates a shared human experience. For children especially, a first live concert can be transformative. As both a performer and teacher, I've seen students discover a genuine love for music because of a single live performance. Many tell me they never thought they liked classical music until they experienced it in person.
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENT, "A MUSICAL JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD"? The series grew naturally out of my work as both a performer and educator, as well as my experience leading Lumos Ensemble. Over the years, I've met many people who were curious about classical music but felt it wasn't really for them. I

started thinking: What if a classical concert felt genuinely welcoming to everyone? That idea eventually became A Musical Journey Around the World, a community concert series designed to make classical music more welcoming and accessible. Each program brings together music from different cultures—Taiwanese folk melodies, European classical works, Latin American music, film music, and more—to show that music can connect people across languages and traditions. One of my goals is to use music people already know and love as a doorway into classical music. When audiences hear themes from Studio Ghibli films or Pirates of the Caribbean performed live, they realize classical instruments aren't unfamiliar or intimidating— they're already part of the stories they've grown up with. Once that barrier begins to disappear, audiences often become much more open to discovering traditional classical repertoire as well. My vision is to grow this series into a long-term community tradition in North Texas—one that brings together families from different backgrounds through music that feels familiar, meaningful, and welcoming. I believe everyone is a potential music lover; sometimes they simply need the right door to walk through.
