A Fresh Start for Fall Can you believe it's already August?

It feels like just yesterday we were making summer plans, and now we're shopping for school supplies, checking class schedules, and figuring out how to get everyone back into a routine.

As much as we love the slower pace of summer, there is something refreshing about the start of a new school year.

Back-to-school season gives us a chance to hit the reset button. We start setting bedtimes again, planning meals, organizing calendars, and creating a little more structure in our days. It may take a few weeks to find our rhythm, but those routines often help our families feel more balanced and connected.

If you're a parent, you know the transition can bring a mix of emotions. There is excitement for new teachers, new opportunities, and new friendships. There can also be a little anxiety, whether it's your child's first day of kindergarten or their last first day before graduation. Every stage comes with its own joys and challenges.

And let's not forget about our pets. They get used to having the kids home all summer and often notice when the house suddenly becomes quieter. A little extra playtime, a walk around the neighborhood, or simply sticking to a consistent schedule can help make the adjustment easier for them too.

Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. Fosters Student Success through Mentorship and Connection Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. (Consider How One Individual Changes Everything) is a Dallas-based nonprofit dedicated to helping students discover their path toward college, career, and life success through mentorship, career readiness, and meaningful community connections.

Founded on the belief that one caring adult can change a young person’s future trajectory, the organization serves students across Dallas-area schools through structured, in-school programming designed to remove barriers that often prevent students from accessing guidance and opportunities outside school hours. Through one-to-one mentorship, career exploration, financial literacy, workforce exposure, and post-secondary planning, Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. equips students with the confidence and resources to build successful futures.

At the center of the organization’s work is its 27-week mentorship curriculum, which pairs students with dedicated mentors who consistently meet with and support them throughout the school year. The curriculum focuses on life skills, communication, goal setting, college and career readiness, leadership development, financial literacy, and future planning. This structured approach allows students to build genuine relationships with mentors while gaining practical tools that prepare them for life after high school.

Community leaders, business professionals, and volunteers work directly with students to help them strengthen communication skills, prepare for interviews, complete FAFSA applications, explore trade programs and colleges, and build realistic goals for life after graduation.

Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. also provides students with access to career exploration fairs, workplace visits, guest speakers, workforce readiness workshops, scholarship guidance, and corporate mentorship experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities. Through its Business Champion program, companies and professionals partner with students by hosting workplace visits, participating in career conversations, offering internships, supporting scholarships, and creating meaningful exposure to career pathways students may not otherwise experience.

Throughout the summer, Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. hosts mentor training, volunteer workshops, and planning sessions to prepare mentors and community partners for the upcoming school year. These trainings help ensure students are paired with mentors who are equipped and engaged, ready to make a lasting impact from day one.

BRINGING HOPE CLOSER TO HOME

A vital new medical expansion is gracing Plano. For over a decade, Children’s Health has traditionally housed mental and behavioral services for youth in its Dallas location.

As of July 27, several of these services will be available at Children’s Health in Plano through a new dedicated behavioral health suite.

“This is a dream coming to fruition,” explains senior director of behavioral health Elizabeth Widtfelt. “It’s been years in the making, and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to make this a reality.”

The Plano expansion brings four specialized behavioral health services to families in Collin County and surrounding communities. New offerings include the Teen Recovery Program, a one-of-a-kind service that treats adolescents facing substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges through intensive outpatient therapy, group counseling, psychiatric care, and family support services. The SPARC Program provides evidence-based intensive outpatient treatment for youth struggling with severe depression through skills-based therapy, medication management, and parent education.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH EXPANDS YOUTH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES TO COLLIN COUNTY, BRINGING FAMILIES GREATER ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED CARE AND AUTISM SUPPORT

The new suite will also offer Outpatient Psychiatry and Psychology Services, providing medication management, therapy, and ongoing behavioral health support for children and adolescents. In addition, Autism Outpatient Care will provide psychological evaluations, autism assessments, and neurodevelopmental support services designed to help families receive earlier diagnoses and intervention opportunities. Previously available only in Dallas, these programs are now accessible in Plano, expanding access to critical behavioral healthcare closer to home for North Texas families.

Children’s Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center share a longstanding joint pediatric enterprise that brings together nationally recognized expertise in patient care, research, and medical education. Through this partnership, the organizations collaborate to advance pediatric innovation, train future health care leaders, and improve outcomes for children across North Texas and beyond.

“We’re in a pretty serious behavioral health crisis as a country, and especially in Texas,” details Widtfeldt. “Access to care is significant for the children and adolescents that need these services. We know bringing it to where folks live and making it more accessible geographically makes a big difference.”

Statistics from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) for youth mental health since the rise of the 2020 COVID pandemic indicate an increased need for these services. In 2023, many high school students in the United States reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. And, nearly one in five teens seriously considered attempting suicide that year.

Mental and behavioral health challenges among children and teens continue to mount nationwide, and Widtfelt says families are becoming more receptive to discussing emotional struggles and seeking outside support. Still, modern childhood comes with increasing pressures. From social media, packed schedules, academic stress, and constant digital exposure, many young people are quietly struggling.

“On the outside, they may look like a rock star, but on the inside, they’re crumbling,” Widtfelt explains.

In addition to expanding mental health resources for adolescents, the new Plano suite will also provide specialized autism outpatient services for families seeking evaluations, developmental support, and earlier intervention opportunities. The program is designed to help children receive care while connecting parents with resources to support their child’s development.

“The earlier that you identify something, the earlier you intervene, and the better the prognosis is in the long run for kids,” Widtfelt says. “Early diagnosis really leads to better prognosis and early intervention. All those things are very critical.”

The need for autism services continues to grow nationwide.

According to CDC findings, approximately 1 in 31 children in the United States has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, an increase from 1 in 44 children just a few years ago. Researchers say early screenings are helping more children receive diagnoses earlier, allowing families to access critical support services.

Studies have shown that early intervention can vastly improve developmental outcomes, making timely evaluations an important first step for many families.

The expansion also complements several existing behavioral health programs already serving families at Children’s Health in Plano, including neuropsychology and eating disorder treatment services. While neuropsychology has previously maintained a presence in Plano, the new behavioral services suite allows for more collaboration between providers to help expand care.

Eating disorder services, which already offer inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient levels of care, will also benefit from the more robust behavioral health footprint. Widtfeldt says the goal is to create a more entwined experience for families navigating complex needs.

“We support the whole family and ensure they have the tools they need to help their child,” she says. “We’re really trying to not only be a much-needed resource but be the

best at what we do. We want to make sure we’re providing the best care for the patients who receive services with us.”

Prior to the promising new development, many of these specialty programs were only available through Children’s Health in Dallas, often creating taxing commutes and additional barriers for families across Collin County. By expanding these services in Plano, Children’s Health is increasing access to specialized pediatric behavioral healthcare closer to where families live on the northeast side of the metroplex.

The new behavioral health suite officially launched on July 27 at Children’s Health Specialty Center 1 in Plano.

BEYOND THE KENNEL Floppy ears. Playful smiles. Never-ending energy. What makes man’s best friend so endearing to us humans is how loyal and lovable they can be. It’s also why the concept of boarding them can sometimes cause fur-ball owners to feel downright anxious.

Madyson Austin, general manager of K-9 Resorts in Plano, understands this all too well. She and her mom, Suzanna Austin, have made canine comfort their mission. Having raised seven dogs of their own, and with over nine years in the dog care industry, Madyson and her mom understand how each and every dog has a unique personality.

Just as every dog is different, so is every owner’s situation. While one family may need to board a pet for a few nights during home renovations, another may be embarking on an extended trip, while yet another has a pup that simply needs extra stimulation during the summer months. We asked Madyson what doggie lovers should look for when it comes to daycare and boarding services.

Q: MANY PET OWNERS ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE DROP AND GO PROCESS. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE?

A: Dogs are like children, except they can’t talk back. It’s best to say your goodbyes in the car with them instead of in the lobby, and remain as calm as possible. We also highly suggest coming in for a free tour before making a decision so you can familiarize yourself with the facility and learn more about the fun enrichment activities we offer (hunting for treats or a ball pit, anyone?).

Q: WHAT IF MY DOG DOESN’T LIKE OTHER DOGS?

We divide our dogs based on size (35 pounds and up are separated from smaller dogs). In order for us to establish if a large group is a good fit for them, we begin with an evaluation process. We conduct “temperament testing” by introducing your dog to the appropriate

daycare area alone first. Then we gradually introduce him/her to other dogs and watch for distress signs.

From there, we continue observing your dog’s personality and preferences, and remain in constant contact with owners throughout the process.

If we know your dog is uncomfortable around other dogs, we can provide them one-on-one time with our staff every two hours as an alternate option. In fact, dogs and puppies with special needs can greatly benefit from this.

Q: WHAT CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HAVE?

A: Our leadership team possesses Pet Tech® certification, dedicated to CPR and first aid for dogs. We also maintain two Professional Pet Boarding Certifications (PPBC Level 1 and 2), which are important because they demonstrate that we know how to run a facility, keep it clean, and manage it professionally.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage.

Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s.

“There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

WHERE WE MEET EVERY READER, RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE Summer is for slowing down—time with family, a break from the school routine, and a chance to let our nervous systems reset. It's also a season when reading skills can quietly soften over the long break, something teachers have long called the “summer slide.”

The good news is that summer is also one of the best windows to turn that slide into a head start—an unhurried stretch to build confidence and strengthen reading skills. A little support now helps a child feel prepared rather than overwhelmed when fall arrives, ready to dive into everything the new year holds.

Why so much emphasis on reading? Because it's the skill nearly everything else is built on, not just in the classroom, but in everyday life, from the ingredients on a food package to the signs that keep us safe. Strong readers feel more equipped to follow instructions, join class discussions, and move comfortably through the world. And here's something that surprises many parents: reading isn't natural.

Unlike speech, which children pick up simply by being around it, reading must be taught, as it is an acquired skill. A home full of books is wonderful, but it isn't the same as direct instruction, and that's exactly why thoughtful, targeted support makes such a difference.

Every child sits somewhere different on the reading journey, and there's a right-sized level of support for each of them.

Whether your child is racing ahead, building steadily, quietly slipping, or working through dyslexia or dysgraphia, help can meet them where they are. A child who's ready to go deeper can build the background knowledge and richer comprehension that harder texts demand. A child reading right on level can gain real momentum and enrichment.

And then there's a group I think about often from my years in the classroom, those children who are quietly slipping. They aren't far enough behind to set off any alarms, so they're easy to miss, but a small gap, left alone, tends to widen year by year.

Timely, targeted help can keep that gap from ever becoming a struggle. Catching it early is so much gentler than waiting.

Reading is far more than sounding out letters. It means understanding and holding onto what the words say. Comprehension is how kids answer questions, analyze ideas, connect old knowledge to new, and think critically across every subject and life experience, and more children wrestle with comprehension struggles than we notice. One of the most powerful keys is background knowledge. When a child already knows a little about a topic, the text makes far more sense, and that knowledge can be built one subject at a time.

This is the heart of what I love about my work. I take time to identify the specific areas where a student needs attention—fluency, decoding, vocabulary, or comprehension—and then design lessons built just for that child. I'm a master's student at Southern Methodist University and a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) candidate, completing my clinical certification hours, with training in Orton-Gillingham–based structured literacy through the Multisensory Teaching Approach and Alphabetic Phonics. But the credentials matter less than what they're meant for: meeting each student exactly where they are, and celebrating every small success along the way, because confidence is what keeps a child motivated to keep going.

“Here's the most hopeful truth for 85 to 90 percent of young children who struggle with reading: about For students who learn differently, that individualized, structured approach matters even more. Dyslexia affects how a person processes written language and is common. Roughly one in five people have dyslexia, and it has nothing to do with intelligence or potential. Dysgraphia, which often goes hand in hand with it, affects writing and the physical work of getting words onto the page. It can keep a bright, capable child from getting their ideas onto the page. Both respond well to explicit, systematic, evidence-based instruction. For dyslexia especially, the structured, multisensory approach I'm trained in, which engages sight, sound, feel, and movement together, has long been the standard of care. Lighter needs call for the same clear teaching in a right-sized dose. The goal is always the same: to reduce frustration, build genuine skills, and help a student feel capable.

Here's the most hopeful truth for 85 to 90 percent of young children who struggle with reading: about 30 minutes a day of well-targeted early instruction can bring their skills up to average levels.
