Here's to Women of Influence and Inspiration!

As we delve into the latest issue of our publication, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the theme that holds special significance this month: celebrating the incredible women in our lives and communities.

Our Ladies' issue is not just a tribute to the achievements and resilience of women, but also a reminder of the importance of recognizing and uplifting the women who shape our lives every day. From mothers and sisters to friends and colleagues, women play multifaceted roles that enrich our communities and inspire positive change.

In a world where women continue to break barriers and redefine success on their own terms, it's crucial to pause and acknowledge their contributions. Through this issue, we aim to shine a spotlight on the stories of strength, determination, and empowerment that resonate within our local communities.

In honor of our Ladies' Issue, I want to share with you a few of my favorite quotes regarding the power of women in our society.

• "Women are leaders everywhere you look, from the CEO who runs a Fortune 500 company to the housewife who raises her children and heads her household. Our country was built by strong women, and we will continue to break down walls and defy stereotypes." - Nancy Pelosi

• "The glass ceiling that once limited a woman's career path has paved a new road towards business ownership, where women can utilize their sharp business acumen while building strong family ties." - Erica Nicole

• "Women are the backbone of all societies. They do a tremendous amount, not only in their families but also in their professional lives." - Melinda Gates

• "There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish." - Michelle Obama

• "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made." - Ruth Bader Ginsburg

• "Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world." - Hillary Clinton

• "The empowered woman is powerful beyond measure and beautiful beyond description." - Steve Maraboli

As you flip through the pages of this edition, I encourage you to reflect on the remarkable women who have left an indelible mark on your life and the lives of those around you. Let's celebrate their achievements, amplify their voices, and continue to build a future where every woman is recognized, respected, and celebrated. Thank you for joining us on this journey of inspiration and empowerment.

Warm regards,

May

The Evolution of Noninvasive Dermatology

Revealing the Fountain of Youth

SKIN CARE | BEAUTY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSEPH RIVERS
14

While the proverbial fountain of youth may still spring from ancient mythology, the ravages of time have met their match in modern-day medicine.

Folks no longer have to undergo the knife to reboot looks. Noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures now tighten sags and fade fine lines in less time than a fashionably long lunch.

“How dermatologists address aging has changed dramatically over the last two decades,” says Dr. Tanya Rodgers, whose Skin Specialists of Allen opened its doors in 2009.

The most invasive procedures Dr. Rodgers offers simple injections – for example, Botox.

Botox requires no anesthesia. Filler injections require topical anesthesia.

Other than that, she employs noninvasive laser technology and prescribes myriad topical treatments, including her own niche Sugoi product line.

And most recently, Rodgers added Ultherapy and CoolSculpting to her epidermal repertoire.   Ultherapy, first introduced stateside in 2009, employs ultrasound technology to noninvasively firm and tone skin. CoolSculpting, FDA-approved a year later, freezes and removes fat from one’s chin or neck.

Unlike yesteryear’s invasive procedures, today’s noninvasive treatments promote ultra-fast healing, and the odds of infection are miniscule.

Equally alluring, cosmetic adjustments are no longer just for the rich and famous. Getting a dermatological makeover is nowadays reasonably affordable. (For example, a simple Botox injection runs less than $1,000.)

Of course, when it comes to epidermal care, Ben Franklin’s time-honored words still hold true: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

To wit, while one’s facial flaws can be touched up later in life, Rodgers advises to develop a four-step skin regime early on.

CONTINUED > 15 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/PLANO MAY 2024

Firstly, one should always apply a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF. And one should daily apply a topical antioxidant, retinoid and an alpha or beta hydroxy acid -- affordably-priced over-the-counter compounds.

However, one should always, Dr. Rodgers warns, be wary of snake oil salesmen.

“Clients come in all the time with products containing a bunch of extra ingredients that amount to window dressing,” Rodgers says. “They have essentially paid a ton for fluff.”

For example, the working ingredient in hairgrowth products is Minoxidil, but a company will throw in sundry ingredients to falsely proclaim its product’s high-priced superiority.

And yes, hair growth falls within the dermatological services Rodgers provides. Better yet, she prescribes products with 2.5 times the Minoxidil found in leading brands like Rogaine.

Sometimes, though, Dr. Rodgers turns away clientele.

“I occasionally see girls in their early 20s requesting procedures,” she explains. “I tell them to wait 10 years and then check back …

“Skincare is just not that complicated, and we should not be misled by ads suggesting it is.”

And now, thanks to advanced medicine and technology, maintaining a somewhat youthful glow into our golden years is not only simple, but also relatively affordable.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF COLLIN COUNTY'S LEGACY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

ARTICLE BY LEAH FRAZIER, THINK THREE MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUNIOR LEAGUE OF COLLIN COUNTY
GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE 18

Community, leadership, and volunteerism are at the heart of the Junior League of Collin County (JLCC). Since 1976, JLCC, formerly known as the Junior League of Plano, has served the Collin County community as an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

“Without our nearly 1,000 motivated members, we would not be able to have such an impactful presence in Collin

County,” said Junior League of Collin County President Renée Gately. “Last year alone, we gave over 15,000 volunteer hours to our community. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve with the strong, talented, and dedicated women who make up our organization.”

What makes JLCC volunteers unique? These are women who receive extensive training and then develop the skills necessary to handle critical issues and leave lasting, positive change in the community.

JLCC boasts an unwavering commitment to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations, and communities—and welcomes all women who value its Mission. The women of JLCC create innovative programs in partnership with

local nonprofits that have a profound impact within the community. These programs address some of Collin County’s most critical issues, including family violence, economic insecurity, literacy, life skills for at-risk youth, therapeutic assistance for children, and more.

From JLCC’s annual Bingo Night to its Spring Soirée to hosting ‘Neath the Wreath— the largest holiday market in DFW—JLCC’s commitment to fundraising and giving back to the Collin County community is unparalleled and at the forefront of the organization.

Businesses can support JLCC’s programs and initiatives via multiple options, including sponsoring an event, attending an event, or in-kind donations. For more info on JLCC, visit jlcollincounty.org.

BRENNEMAN CATHERINE

THE OWNER OF PRO-NAIL ROOFING, SOLAR AND OUTDOOR LIVING WHO IS PIONEERING SUCCESS IN MALE-DOMINATED FIELDS

INSPIRED BY | HOME SERVICES
BY KATHY MORENO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZOE MARTIN

Catherine's career path originally started in the world of information technology (IT) in the early 90’s, a time when the industry was predominantly male-dominated. However, Catherine never viewed her gender as a barrier to her success. Driven by her natural competitiveness and a relentless determination to excel, she forged her path to success, competing not against others, but against her own potential.

From the outset of her career, Catherine approached her work with a singular focus on mastery. She believed that true expertise transcends gender, and she dedicated herself to becoming a leading authority in her field. Despite the male-dominated environment, Catherine never felt threatened or compelled to prove herself. Instead, she let her work speak for itself, earning the respect and admiration of her peers through her unparalleled dedication and expertise.

In 2007, a pivotal moment sparked by a discouraging encounter with a contractor  became the catalyst for her transformative change. This encounter propelled her to seek guidance from her business coach, igniting the flames of innovation and determination. As Catherine's career progressed, she felt the desire to embark on a new challenge: entrepreneurship. Twelve years ago, ProNail emerged as a beacon of empowerment, providing not only exceptional services but also

breaking down barriers for women in traditionally male-dominated industries. Fast forward to 2020, where ProNail took a bold leap into outdoor living solutions, showcasing adaptability and foresight. And in 2021, this expansion blossomed into a thriving division, a testament to the founder's resilience and vision. This journey from adversity to success exemplifies the power of turning obstacles into opportunities, inspiring us all to challenge norms and champion inclusivity.

Undeterred by the male dominance of the business world, Catherine saw an opportunity to bring her unique perspective to the forefront. Recognizing that homeowners often needed more than just technical solutions, Catherine introduced a novel approach to sales, centered around understanding and addressing the needs of her clients.

At the heart of Catherine's approach was the belief that true empowerment comes from guiding clients to discover their own solutions. She worked closely with homeowners, listening to their concerns and aspirations, and empowering them to make informed decisions that best suited their needs. This client-centric philosophy not only set Catherine apart in the industry but also laid the foundation for her future success.

In building her company, Catherine sought to create a culture that mirrored her own values and principles.

UNDETERRED BY THE MALE DOMINANCE OF THE BUSINESS WORLD, CATHERINE SAW AN OPPORTUNITY TO BRING HER UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE TO THE FOREFRONT.

She prioritized hiring individuals who shared her positive outlook and collaborative mindset, forming a cohesive team that thrived in a supportive and inclusive environment. Catherine's "happy bubble" became synonymous with her company culture, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among her employees.

Despite her demanding career, Catherine has always maintained a healthy work-life balance, seamlessly juggling her professional and personal responsibilities. Her impeccable time management skills and disciplined approach to scheduling have allowed her to excel in both realms without compromising on either. Her family and friends never feel neglected, as Catherine's commitment to her loved ones is as unwavering as her dedication to her work.

As Catherine continues to lead by example, she remains a trailblazer in her field, inspiring others to challenge stereotypes and pursue their passions fearlessly. Her story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, innovation, and unwavering self-belief in overcoming obstacles and achieving success.

First Responder of the Month

The Baby Catcher - Elizabeth Aviles

Elizabeth Aviles, a certified nurse midwife from Plano, has attended over 1,200 births since 2011. Initially a labor and delivery nurse, she quickly realized that hospitals prioritizing profit and provider convenience over natural birth experiences were not the ideal environment for women seeking natural childbirth. This led her to establish Baby Catcher, PLLC, a midwifery-led homebirth practice advocating for personalized and intimate natural births.

Aviles emphasizes the U.S.'s high infant and maternal mortality rates, partly attributed to fast-paced, profit-driven, and reactive versus proactive prenatal care. She highlights the contrast between the guidance midwives provide, aiming to keep women healthy and low risk for home birth, and the reactive approach of obstetricians who too often categorize pregnancy as a risky medical condition requiring medical management and intervention. She criticizes providers in hospitals for their profit-driven, time constraints, and intervention-heavy methods, resulting in high C-section rates, contrasting with midwifery practices like hers, which maintain rates below 10%.

She promotes a low-intervention approach prioritizing spontaneous, natural, supported labor and birth, emphasizing safety, intimacy, and sacredness. Reflecting on her transition from hospital to home birth practice, Aviles emphasizes, “I saw what we did to women, and then I saw what women can do!”

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE

INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!

invest inyour living space

There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.

GOOD LIGHTING

It’s imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. Rooms need a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light.  Candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.

GREAT TEXTURES

Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.

DECLUTTERING

So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages.  You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.
