LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Angi Burns | angi.burns@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Katelyn Reed | katelyn.reed@citylifestyle.com

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Plano City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home and personal health — it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle, it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brulée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days, it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Ho p e Re s to re d Missions NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH

ARTICLE BY BRENDA MCGEE, HRM VOLUNTEER

G IV IN G BAC K | LO CAL SE RVICE S

You can’t live without hope. That’s what Tamara Monroe, Founder and CEO of Hope Restored Missions, believes. In 2019, Tamara and three like-minded women sought to fill the gap in services for people experiencing homelessness. At the time, there was no social service agency in Collin County that specifically specialized in providing holistic wrap-around support services for the unsheltered, where anyone needing assistance could receive help without any eligibility requirements. Hope Restored Missions' primary program, Bridge to Hope, provides a complete range of services based on the client’s barriers to being able to meet their basic needs of housing, food, employment/income, and physical and mental wellness. Services are designed to provide long term solutions to meeting the clients’ needs rather than a “quick fix.” The hallmark feature of HRM is the foundational belief that helping the homeless is not just about housing, it's about relationships. Woven throughout what we do and how we do it is the effort to be intentional about developing relationships with our clients so that they feel that they are known as individuals, each with a unique life story and each with strengths and abilities that will enable them to build stable, meaningful lives. HRM becomes not just their service provider but also their community. This develops trust and motivates them to persevere through the challenging and difficult actions most will need to undertake to rebuild their lives and bring Hope alive. Any client who comes to HRM is welcomed and offered food, water, hygiene items, clothing, and shoes to meet any immediate needs. Through an intake interview, the client is assessed to identify any immediate circumstances or needs to be prioritized such as a

medical or mental health need. Additional information is gathered that will become the starting point for a case manager to work with them to build an individual action plan. Besides food, hygiene and clothing, the most common needs we address are procuring official government forms of identification and applying for any government benefits for which they may qualify. People who are experiencing homelessness come from all walks of life and range from those who have been chronically unsheltered (about 30%) to those who have been recently evicted and are without a home for the first time in their lives. In the last twelve months, HRM has helped 1,800 individuals going through this crisis. Most of the work at HRM is done by dedicated volunteers and most of our funding is through grassroots donations. If you have a few hours a week, we would love to have you come to our office to sort donations, put food and hygiene packets together and/or answer the phones. We also need volunteers with computer skills to help with intake. Follow us on social media and sign up with your email address. Our Monthly Outreach Events require lots of volunteers. Our clients get free haircuts, hot meals, fresh fruit, health checks, art, music and so much more. We always need individuals, organizations, church groups, and/or schools to hold food drives for items that can easily be eaten on the move, without can openers or stoves. Travel size hygiene items are also greatly appreciated. Our current needs are blankets, sweatpants, sweatshirts, coats, and gloves. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Your donations are welcomed during those hours. 1947 K Avenue, Plano, TX 75074. (214) 501-2181. www.hoperestoredmissions.org

Walking transcends the ordinary as a simple yet powerful workout accessible to almost everyone, delivering a dual punch of both physical and mental benefits. Physically, it enhances blood flow, particularly to the brain and muscles, fortifies the heart and bones, manages blood pressure, and more. Its impact extends to aiding recovery when ill and post-surgical rehabilitation. Mentally, solitary walks foster mental clarity, reflection, and a sense of reverence, while group walks provide both conscious and subconscious emotional boosts. Outdoor walks expose us to sunlight, a rich source of mood-enhancing vitamin D, and fresh air, fortifying the immune system. In the realm of wellness, walking emerges not merely as an exercise but as a holistic practice, offering a plethora of advantages for both body and mind.

Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors

The Stylish Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, “Oh, Grow Up!”

Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since king Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls.” Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall.” Designers have dubbed them “statement walls.” But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do — as “vertical gardens.” A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade. The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well.

Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress. Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down, making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well. As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also, as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.

I don't really have a favorite movie, but I like 'American Sniper.'” WHO HE'S FOLLOWING: “I don't necessarily have a public figure or influencer I look up to; I prefer to look up to people who I know in person. “
