The Style Scene

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” — Coco Chanel

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives. Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to try new styles or perhaps explore familiar ones.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.  Here’s to being uniquely you!

CREATING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

TREND SETTER STYLE + BEAUTY 14

Blair Moore has loved all things fashion from a young age. The Nashville native studied Fashion Merchandising and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fashion capital of the world, New York City. It was inevitable the mother of three would find herself in a career where she would help other women find their confidence through their wardrobe. Blair says, “I love helping women find their true personal style and get them organized in their closet so they feel truly empowered to get dressed each day with ease and confidence!” Blair shares four trends for spring and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe.

BRIGHT AND BOLD COLORS

This season, bright colors such as hot pink and kelly green are trending. I know this can be difficult for my neutral-loving ladies, so I always recommend starting small. Choose a fun, colorful earring or add a bold clutch to brighten up your look. You can also have fun with your shoes by adding a colorful heel or sandal to a dress or denim outfit.

FLORALS

From floral midi dresses to feminine floral blouses, this season is all about flower power. Choose a flowy floral skirt and pair it with your favorite knotted tee and sandals for an effortless look. Tip: If wearing a dress with a large floral print, try adding a denim jacket, light cardigan or woven belt to add texture and break up the print.

TWO-PIECE SETS

From casual jogger sets to feminine tiered skirts and puff-sleeved tops, two-piece sets are everywhere! What I adore about twopiece sets is that you can wear them in multiple ways. Wear it as a set or take the top and pair it with denim, or take the skirt and pair it with a tee and light jacket or blazer. Two pieces, but multiple ways to wear them!

90S-INSPIRED DENIM

Let me be clear — I LOVE a skinny jean and always will! But the 90s denim trend is having a moment and if you want to embrace it, here are a couple of tips: Choose a fit that is high-rise with a more relaxed fit through the leg. You want the jean to fall right above the ankle bone. This is slimming and flattering to the eye. Pair with a strappy heel, sneaker or slide.

Declutter Your Closet

edit

Edit down your closet. Ask yourself these three things: Do you still like it? Does it fit within reason? Is it still in good condition? If the answer is no, it’s time to donate or sell that item. Keep a donation basket in your closet to help you stay on track.

new and old

Buy something new, get rid of something old. Each time you buy a new item, get rid of an item in your closet. This manages the chaos of having too many options in your closet. We only wear about 20% of the items in our closet, so make a list before shopping and shop with intention.

organize

When it comes to organization, having a system in place is key. Utilize the entire space for your items. For example, buy closed bins for out of season or travel items and place them on the top shelf. Utilize the back of the door or any blank walls with hooks for hats or a jewelry organizer. Get rid of items that are taking up space in your closet like shoe boxes, sentimental items, and bulky items like luggage. Store them elsewhere if you can. The two best things you can do to save on space and have an organized closet is to invest in all matching slim velvet hangers. This frees up more space in your closet and looks great, too. And finally, add matching labeled baskets for folded items to keep everything nicely organized and in specific categories.

Sweat Equity

When it comes to living your best life, prioritizing your health and wellness is paramount. Despite our best intentions, a gym membership is not without its challenges. As Michael Streight, owner and operator of Luxury Lifestyle Training, puts it, “There’s no need to spend 15-30 minutes driving there and back, setting up or getting distracted. Time is valuable! Having your gym at home eliminates the excuses.”

Aside from the hassle of travel, a home gym can be tailored to meet your specific training needs and provides you with a safe, sanitary, and private workout space free from the germs and inconveniences that often accompany gym memberships. Luxury Lifestyle Training provides elevated home gyms for homeowners. There are many great reasons to build a luxury gym at home, and Streight shares all the insights.

ATHLETE LIFE | FITNESS
16

Homeowners should consider setting themselves and their spaces for success with enough floor space to maximize movement potential.

“If possible, having glass mirrors is important in order to see your movement and get some great visuals of your form to ensure proper movement and avoid injuries,” says Streight.

Top must-haves include dumbbells (having a full set is better if space permits), a pull-up rack, TRX straps and a landmine attachment for a barbell.

“We believe you are only limited by creativity,” Streight shares. “And with these equipment pieces, the creativity is endless!”

Streight believes it is super important for homeowners to set a logical pace for themselves and a clear vision when it comes to building their luxury at-home gym. Trends and fads do not ultimately yield results and a successful gym relies on being honest with yourself about your goals.

“I cannot tell you how many Peloton Bikes I have been asked to try to resell because the purchaser never used it!” Streight reveals. “Be realistic with your goals, your training styles and what kind of fitness regimen excites you.”

As Streight puts it, an elevated home gym should be a source of pride for a homeowner. A functional training space should be a continuation of the aesthetic and look of their home.

CONTINUED > 17 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/PLANO SEPTEMBER 2023

“In regards to our home gym building process, I feel we have a very unique approach,” Streight says. “As fitness professionals, we understand and know training philosophies and styles like the back of our hand. Additionally, we pride ourselves on knowing the greatest and latest equipment, subscription training models and more.”

Luxury Lifestyle Training hears their clients' needs and filters them through their professional lenses to bring a world class space to life. Luxury Lifestyle Training team members are known as “concierge coaches” because they raise the bar for what is expected.

“I tell clients that we guarantee they are going to get honest, transparent and good responsive communication,”

Streight voices. “That is what matters the most and it goes further than anything else can.”

Luxury Lifestyle Training also provides educational advice as needed for clients who desire more knowledge and insights. Building a dream home gym requires team collaboration and effort in order to be as efficient as possible while not losing out on the quality of a home’s style.

“True results and true transformation happen over time,” Streight adds. “It is a marathon, not a sprint. Transformation here at Luxury Lifestyle Training has happened with and for our clients over time, by buying into the belief that they can, and the belief and trust that their concierge coach and our team will work beside them the whole way!”

FIRST RESPONDER OF THE MONTH

Nesha Walker is a true trailblazer, a firefighter and reservist. On May 12, 2023, she celebrated 17 years in the Navy. Nesha's passion for her work is evident throughout the community, but her biggest fan is right at home. "My daughter brags about me even when I tell her not to!" she shares with contagious laughter. The admiration is well-deserved, considering Nesha's incredible story.

Before starting a firefighting career, she worked at Victoria's Secret for eight years. Seeking a change, she opted for a different path as an Emergency Room technician. Little did she know that this decision would mark the beginning of a series of transformative steps.

Her love of helping others led her to pursue EMT school and later set her sights on becoming a firefighter. Nesha's perseverance paid off; next she enrolled in paramedic school. "After paramedic school, I chilled for a little while. Then I thought, 'You know what? Let's go all the way,'” Nesha recalls. And go all the way she did.

What’s next for Nesha? Nursing school.

Her accomplishments go beyond her impressive career trajectory. Breaking barriers, she is the first black woman to join DeSoto's Fire Department. “It’s been good,” she says of her time there. "The best part of my job is meeting new people. Despite the challenges she has faced as a woman in a male-dominated field, she continues to elevate herself to the next level and conquer new challenges with dedication, hard work, and a bold spirit.

Caddo Offices Designed for Small Business

When Tim Slaughter and his partners at Caddo Office Reimagined entered the world of coworking spaces in 2019, they acquired existing properties from another developer, Scott Yeager.

Yeager’s original spaces were rebranded as “Caddo,” named in honor of the fearless yellow lab belonging to Caddo founders’ late friend, Chris Thevenet. The buildings needed a refresh too, so Kim Gill and Brad Hatton of Seventy Sixty-One Design were enlisted to renovate the properties, starting with Caddo’s McKinney location.  The vision for the redesign was clear.

“Our buildings are in suburban areas. We want them to feel homey. We want to be a part of your neighborhood,” says Slaughter.

While other developers erect cookie-cutter coworking spaces, Caddo endeavors to be an extension of the community.

With the renovation of the McKinney location, Gill and Hatton maintained respect for the original property, but elevated the aesthetic. The updated design is clean and modern with eclectic, playful touches that make it approachable and welcoming.

Caddo has eight locations across DFW and will break ground on a ninth in North Richland Hills this fall. From Frisco to Prosper to Lakewood, every Caddo location is unified by a lively, cheerful color palette. The coworking spaces feature plant-filled atriums bathed in natural light and eye-catching fixtures, many of which are repurposed industrial objects.

Caddo is committed to providing members (and day guests) with spaces that solve the problems of small business owners. Conference rooms are available for reservation, common areas are perfect for meeting with clients or enjoying lunch, and 24-hour access means you can set your ideal hours.

While all Caddo locations share a consistent color scheme, essential elements, and commitment to members, each location has its own distinctive personality.

PLANO SOUTH (PAGES 22-23)

Located at 4324 Mapleshade Lane off the George Bush Turnpike, Caddo’s Plano South location reflects a university aesthetic, a nod to nearby UTD. Inviting, comfortable chairs and sofas beckon members to enjoy a cup of coffee with coworkers or clients, and playful paper airplanes soar across a mural upstairs.

FLOWER MOUND

Located at 2201 Spinks Road, this location’s design pays homage to neighboring DFW airport and the nexus of several major highways. A cartoon map of the area and several old maps of Denton County adorn the space which also features backlit three dimensional wood panels. As with all Caddo spaces, there’s plenty of room to entertain clients or take a break from work in the comfortable and beautiful common areas.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS

Once ground is broken on this location, it will include all the amenities Caddo members expect: spacious conference rooms, light-filled spaces, and eclectic design. As always, Gill and Hatton will honor the surrounding community with their design. This location will feature southwestern elements and have the feel of a boutique Sante Fe Hotel.

ELEVATING YOUR BACKYARD'S STYLE

In today's world, a backyard oasis that is thoughtfully designed and professionally built is not an unreachable fantasy — it is an investment in the lifestyle you deserve. Homeowners in North Texas and throughout the world have realized that an outdoor living space offers an elevated living experience, improved mental health, increased home value, and much more.

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN
26

With a seamless extension between the inside and outside of the home, homeowners instantly have expanded living areas, increased versatility, and connection with nature. An outdoor space can serve as an area to host a party or book club, dine al fresco, practice yoga, or watch your children enjoy a play date. Beyond that, a stylish and inviting outdoor living space can serve as a personal sanctuary.

Curating a space that is attractive, welcoming, comfortable, and precisely tailored to your own needs is priceless. Homeowners have the power to incorporate myriad elements to make their specific vision come to life. Whether you dream of meandering garden paths and the dulcet refrain of fountains or a vibrant patio perfect for partying, designing your ideal space is a delight.

CONTINUED > 27 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/PLANO SEPTEMBER 2023

There's no need to hold back when it comes to daydreaming about your outdoor project. Some elements to consider include seating, shade, fire features, dining, cooking, privacy, and existing design. Additional details to consider are the need for appliances, ideal materials for the space, and the envisioned use for the space.

Explore design options for key backyard features and craft an atmosphere where everyone wants to be. While everyone knows the kitchen is the heart of the home, a basic grill and folding patio furniture just don't cut it when you want an inviting, stylish space. The addition of an outdoor kitchen and outdoor dining area can revolutionize the way you entertain.

When creating and designing an outdoor kitchen, you can have all the features and functions of an indoor kitchen, eliminating the hassle of constantly going in and out. High-end appliances and finishes can take a backyard from ordinary to extraordinary. Not only can you have a full kitchen outdoors, you can also have a beautiful one.

Incorporating elements like stonework when designing an outdoor kitchen allows the kitchen area to be stunning and withstand harsh outdoor elements. The stonework can easily be extended into other areas of the backyard, creating a seamless flow from outdoor kitchen

to outdoor bar to outdoor dining area. It can even be used to create a focal point, like a beckoning fire pit begging guests to gather round with marshmallows and smoky cocktails.

There is no reason you can't have everything you desire in a backyard and more. Style, design, and comfort are not limited to the inside of your home.

Experts like the team at ProNail can help make your dreams a reality. A professional will walk through the process with you every step of the way, from initial vision to 3D renderings to final product. ProNail will complete the permit package for the city and HOA, if applicable, ensuring work begins and ends with the highest standards. Their structures are expertly engineered with knowledge of load-bearing capacity and every project has an on-site manager who ensures quality, timeliness, and the best service possible. Turning the outdoor living space of your dreams into a reality is easy when you have a solid plan and a knowledgeable team to guide you throughout the process and complete the project.

As autumn tiptoes into Texas, nature beckons us to venture outside. By incorporating thoughtful design elements into your backyard living space, you can elevate the experience for your family and friends.

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life.

Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type?

Sopapilla Cheesecake

INGREDIENTS:

• Two packages Pillsbury Crescent Rolls

• 12 ounces Philadelphia Cream Cheese (softened)

• 3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar

• 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1/2 cup melted butter

METHOD:

01. Preheat oven to 375°. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 12 ounces of cream cheese, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix well.

02. Grease the bottom and sides of a 9x13 glass baking dish. Open one package of

crescent rolls and unroll it into the bottom of the dish without separating the rolls from one another. Stretch to completely fill the bottom of the pan. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the crescent rolls in the pan and then top with the second package of crescent rolls, stretching the dough to cover the cream cheese.

03. Pour 1/2 cup of melted butter over the top.

04. Mix together 3/4 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Sprinkle on top of the butter.

05. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top appears dry and slightly crispy. Turn off the oven, but leave the cheesecake in for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for an additional 30 minutes.

06. Cut into squares and serve with your choice of a drizzle of agave sweetener or honey, whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

07. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
