Happy Holidays!
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Angi Burns | angi.burns@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Katelyn Reed | katelyn.reed@citylifestyle.com
The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as children, whether it is the scents, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. In my family, we have a unique tradition of playing BINGO every Christmas Eve with prizes including $1 lottery tickets, fast food gift cards, and various gag gifts. My parents gather random "as seen on TV" and Walmart clearance aisle prizes throughout the year, and then fill the living room with boxes and bags for their five children, our partners and thirteen grandchildren to sift through. It is always an evening of laughs and inevitable regifting. This cheesy tradition has been the highlight of my holidays for decades. Additionally, my father, who I believe was the inspiration for Clark Griswold in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," constructs an elaborate display that garners hundreds of spectators and local media each year. Our BINGO game is often interrupted by visitors taking photos in the yard — my father gladly goes out to say hello and gift them with candy canes. We would love to hear your family holiday traditions! Please share them with us on our social media. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier while also supporting our local businesses. Additionally, we share what our area is showcasing this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

Nonprofit of the Month ARTICLE BY JULISSA ESTRADA

Local Good Center (LGC) is a Plano-based nonprofit on a mission to create lasting good by providing opportunities for personal and community-wide transformation. LGC addresses the community’s complex challenges with creative, holistic solutions by focusing on four key pillars – education, advocacy, wellness, and job readiness. LGC’s Education Program targets community transformation through free and low-cost programs for immigrants and underserved individuals. English and citizenship test preparedness classes are offered year-round. Since its creation, hundreds of students have gained new skills and confidence and made friends from all over the world. What started as a small group of volunteers and students quickly turned into the most popular program at LGC.
LGC’s Advocacy Program serves to strengthen unheard and overlooked groups within North Texas. One of these groups is the foster care community. LGC organizes regular respite nights and connection events for active foster/adopt families, hosts foster care open houses for the community to learn more, and partners with multiple agencies for referrals and resources. LGC also works to combat the mental health crisis experienced by millions of Americans by organizing expert workshops and providing affordable counseling options to clients. LGC’s Job Readiness Program helps participants prepare for meaningful employment. LGC offers free and low-cost trainings on workplace software programs, as well as workshops on interview techniques, resume writing and more. Additionally, LGC leverages its relationship with local businesses to connect clients to hiring managers. LGC’s Wellness Program brings preventative care and education to the community, focusing on nutrition, access to healthy food and
fitness education. LGC boasts a demonstration kitchen to accommodate cooking classes and offers one of the area’s only fresh food banks, providing program participants with access to refrigerated, nutritious grocery options. LGC also hosts health fairs where attendees receive free preventative screenings and free vaccinations. The Center partners with regional nonprofits, surrounding school districts and local cities to identify and help meet community needs. Founded as the Chase Oaks Family Center in 2014, community transformation has always been at the forefront. In 2021, the Center opened its doors to a new, larger location and officially became known as the Local Good Center. LGC is run by an all-women team and is supported by individual and corporate donors, as well as a dedicated group of volunteers and community partners. There are opportunities for everyone to get involved — those interested can volunteer time, provide in-kind donations, or make a financial gift at localgoodcenter.org/take-action

Unconventional Christmas Trees When I was a little girl, family friends hosted a lavish holiday party every year. I still remember the excitement of pulling up to their house and seeing every window aglow. Inside, an enormous Christmas tree filled their great room. I marveled at how they managed to decorate it, imagining them stacked on one another's shoulders or leaning precariously from the balcony to place the star. The tree was just one of dozens; every room — even the bedrooms — contained at least one tree, and the kids made a game of dashing from room to room, counting as we went. Over the years, my family has enjoyed just about every type of Christmas tree there is. For over a decade, my dad would drag our fake tree down from the attic, and we would spend hours fluffing its scraggly branches. During high school, we moved to Lucas right after Thanksgiving, so Christmas decorating took a backseat to unpacking. We did manage to hang a few ornaments on a potted Norfolk Island Pine which we later planted in our backyard. One year, we made a sojourn to a Christmas tree farm and spent the morning sipping hot cocoa and searching for our family's tree. And when I was out on my own and didn't have space for a traditional tree, I crafted one out of twinkle CONTINUED >

lights and push pins, zigzagging the lights across a wall in my tiny apartment. There are countless options when it comes to decorating your home for the most wonderful time of the year. From real to artificial and from book trees to borrowed trees (yes, borrowed!), your perfect tree awaits — whether you display just one or decorate one in every room.
REAL CHRISTMAS TREES Despite getting a bad rap for their effects on the environment, real trees are actually quite beneficial. Not only does a Balsam fir fill your home with the delicious whiff of winter, for every tree cut down, one or two are planted in its place. Plus, real trees can be recycled into mulch, and trees naturally decompose over time.
ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES Gone are the days of flimsy fake firs. Today's artificial trees are lush and sumptuous. Artificial trees snap together easily and often come pre-lit, meaning you can focus on hanging ornaments. And if you're in the market for something fun, they come in a range of colors — even pink!
BOOK TREES Perfect for the book lover in your family, these trees are created out of your favorite tales. Simply create a ring of books on the floor or a table, and layer on ever-decreasing rings of books.
BORROWED TREES The latest trend in trees? Rentals! While not available everywhere, Christmas tree rental companies are popping up across the country. Rather than cutting a tree down, your tree is dug up, placed in a pot, and delivered to your home until after the holidays. You can even rent the same tree for several years in a row!

With just a handful of ingredients, we embark on a delightful journey of creating confections that embody the spirit of the season. The kitchen buzzes with excitement as we measure, mix, and pour our way to holiday sweetness. The kids eagerly lend a hand, relishing the joy of turning basic ingredients into delectable treasures. The scent of chocolate and sugary sweetness wafts through the air as we mold, shape, and adorn our creations with festive sprinkles. It's a bonding experience filled with laughter, shared stories, and the anticipation of savoring the fruits of our labor.

Zealand promises an enchanting escape amid less explored terrain, adorned with the allure of tranquility and the absence of bustling crowds. These serene settings offer the perfect backdrop for indulging in winter adventures, ensuring an unforgettable journey into the heart of a pristine winter wonderland. Nestled within the Julian Alps, Slovenia's Kranjska Gora and Vogel resorts beckon with many exhilarating skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Travelers seeking a winter haven in Bulgaria are encouraged to explore the allure of Bansko, nestled in the southwestern region. It is renowned for its top-tier ski resorts, boasting meticulously maintained slopes, budget-friendly prices, and the enchanting charm of its historic old town. The Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria also boast hidden gems like Pamporovo, celebrated for its striking pine forests and lesser-known yet captivating ski areas. While New Zealand has garnered acclaim for its summertime adventures, the winter presents an equally alluring facade, inviting snow enthusiasts to revel in the thrill of skiing and snowboarding at coveted destinations such as Cardrona and The Remarkables. In addition to these classic winter pursuits, adrenaline seekers can also partake in the exhilarating escapades of heli-skiing, the serenity of snowshoeing, or the challenge of ice climbing amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Southern Alps. A winter sojourn to Japan unveils a world renowned for its deep powder snow, notably in regions such as Hokkaido and Nagano. Resorts like Niseko and Hakuba entice snow enthusiasts from around the globe, boasting splendid ski terrains, therapeutic hot springs, and a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. From December to late March or early April, the Japanese winter season invites travelers to relish the delights of snowshoeing, vibrant ice festivals and encounters with charming snow monkeys. While January and February lure visitors with consistent snowfall and delicate, dry powder snow, Hokkaido boasts a longer winter season. Honshu's snow-laden embrace tends to be more concentrated and intense. Amidst the approaching festive fervor, outdoor lighting takes center stage. A revolutionary shift towards energy-efficient and eco-friendly solutions has garnered significant attention in outdoor lighting. These innovations not only signify a commitment to sustainability but also reflect an evolving consciousness toward environmental preservation.
Undoubtedly, the impact of lighting transcends mere illumination; it assumes the role of a storyteller, weaving narratives that resonate with the essence of every celebration. It serves as a conduit for joy, a catalyst for revelry, and a guardian that enhances the safety and allure of properties, transforming them into inviting havens for all.
Outdoor lighting has a rich and varied history that mirrors the evolution of human civilization. From ancient times, when fire was used to ward off predators and illuminate communal spaces, to the advent of gas lamps and electric lighting during the Industrial Revolution, outdoor illumination has been intrinsically tied to safety, communal gatherings, and the beautification CONTINUED >

Giving Campaign
2023 40
LOCA LS ON LY | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

STUDENT OF THE MONTH Kizzy Debrah ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHERINE CHONG A Ghanaian native, Kizzy Debrah has been on a journey that has taken her from the chill of Minnesota to the warmth of Texas. In the process, she’s attended three high schools and enrolled in a Virtual Learning Academy to avoid falling behind. It paid off. Not only did she keep up, she got ahead and will graduate in May — a year early. When not immersed in her studies, Kizzy can be found engrossed in literature. She’s a self-proclaimed bookworm who believes in the transformative power of reading. As such, she spends weekends volunteering at Franklin the Helper Children’s Books at Willow Bend Mall. “Kizzy's kind and inclusive communication style has been invaluable,” says Demetré Bivins, Managing Director of Franklin’s Books. “She possesses the unique ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued.” Causes and classes and college applications… oh my! “Taking junior and senior level classes while being the President of the UNICEF Club and completing college applications has been an exercise in balance,” explains Kizzy. “I’ve grown so much when it comes to time management.” Yet, despite her drive for success, Kizzy finds solace in cherished family traditions. December is for sipping hot chocolate and enjoying Hallmark movies, reflecting the love and warmth that's set the foundation for her dedication. As she sets her sights on UCLA, Kizzy envisions a future at the intersection of technology and education. “I want to major in Computer Science. My dream is to create an education company that can bring technology to countries in need. I’m in the process of trademarking it right now. I can’t tell you the name,” she says with a giggle, “but I’m so excited about it." With her trademarked educational company on the horizon, Kizzy Debrah stands poised to leave an indelible mark on the world.
WHO SHE’S FOLLOWING: Malala. “She has such courage and is an inspiration.” WHAT SHE’S WATCHING: Kizzy’s home country of Ghana is surrounded by French speaking countries and she understands the importance of speaking the language to have an impact. “I’ve been watching French films like 'The Count of Monte Cristo.'”
