I’m very fortunate that my husband and I can celebrate simply by having dinner together, toasting to our resilience, shared history and how we agree on important things, like going to bed early and staying in on Valentine’s Day. Take that, Hallmark! This month on the 14th, I’ll actually be in Northern Michigan with my girlfriends on a snowshoeing and winery tour through the Leelanau Peninsula. My husband loves me so lets me go. That’s my kind of love story. I hope the bungee jumpers make it to 30 years!

BY GIVING MORE THAN $3.75 MILLION DURING ITS 30 YEARS OF SERVICE, THE SANDY SPRINGS SOCIETY HAS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED A VARIETY OF ORGANIZATIONS THAT SERVE IN THE AREAS OF THE ARTS, HERITAGE, ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES, EDUCATION, SOCIAL SERVICES AND MORE IN SANDY SPRINGS. In 2018 alone, The Sandy Springs Society awarded $218,500 to 19 nonprofits in Sandy Springs for projects including: purchasing eight water aerobics aqua bikes for the Dorothy Benson Senior Center; funding the TeenBiz 3000 reading program for North Springs High School; purchasing “Fab Lab” equipment for the Riverwood Foundation’s innovation initiative; helping the Senior Services of North Fulton to provide senior adults with medical appointment transportation; and funding bus transportation for children attending Horizons Atlanta’s summer enrichment program at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. Each March, The Society hosts its “upscale resale” event, Tossed Out Treasures. According to this year’s Chair Rita Bodner, “Members gather donations of quality merchandise, featuring items as varied as silver, linens, women’s and children’s clothing, and housewares throughout the Atlanta

area, to be held this year on March 22 and 23, in the former Michael’s commercial space, at 1155 Mt. Vernon Highway.” The Sandy Springs Society was formed in 1988 by a group of eight community-minded women who each invited a friend with a generous heart, strong leadership and organizational skills, and a desire to directly help their local Sandy Springs community. Much of this core of 16 founding members and 108 other charter members are still active in The Sandy Springs Society. Today, 30 years later, it is a vibrant organization of 310 dedicated and civic-minded women who contribute philanthropic support all year long throughout the Sandy Springs community. Many of the works offered will depict landscapes. abstracts and animals, and the artists will donate a portion of the proceeds to North Valley Animal Disaster Group, a non-profit organization working to rescue and care for pets and farm animals displaced by the recent wildfires in Northern California. The gallery will be open Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon, and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. until noon, as well as by appointment by calling the church. “As artists, we are makers,” says Stern. “We observe, and when successful, create something that has the power to move another to the point that they react. Deb, Laura and I have created this body of work in hopes that our audience will both delight in its visual impact and find satisfaction in knowing we are gifting back by supporting the work of North Valley Animal Disaster Group.” Shainker says, “I am delighted to showcase my work with Susie and Deb. I hope people will enjoy exploring our creative differences and similarities, as they join with us to benefit North Valley Animal Disaster Group.” Rosenbury says, “Susie, Laura and I both feel a strong responsibility to care for our environment, and the creatures who inhabit it with us. We were deeply moved by the plight of the animals during the recent California wildfires, and look forward to channeling our creative energies to make a positive impact by supporting those who are caring for them.”

In Atlanta, Rosenbury created handcrafted items for local home stores from a studio in the Urban Art Collective in Chamblee. Here, she was inspired to begin painting, drawing on her experience combining colors, patterns and shapes. Unraveling Fiber Arts WITH THE CHATTAHOOCHEE HANDWEAVERS GUILD

FOUNDED IN 1955, THE CHATTAHOOCHEE HANDWEAVERS GUILD ALLOWS FIBER ENTHUSIASTS TO GATHER, EXCHANGE IDEAS, LEARN NEW TECHNIQUES THROUGH WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES, AND GET INSPIRED. Located in the North DeKalb Cultural Arts Center – the same building as Spruill Center for the Arts – the guild welcomes novices, experienced artists and anyone with a curiosity about the craft to explore its many expressions. Ray Callaway started weaving with a class at the John C. Campbell Folk School, and during the last few years of his career in the computer industry, he found that weaving could provide an antidote to the stress of his job. He joined the Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild, served as workshop chair and later joined the board. Today, he is president of the guild and still appreciates the soothing effects of weaving. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEAVING AND FIBER ARTS? Fiber arts is a very broad area. Basketry, spinning, fiber sculpture, tapestry, knitting, crochet, embroidery and others are all fiber arts. Weaving is just one aspect. WHAT IS THE CONTEMPORARY IMPORTANCE OF WEAVING AND FIBER ARTS? Where do I start? Unless it’s a knit, every garment you wear is woven. Fabric designers have to understand how yarns interact with each other with color and texture. Whether it is natural fibers like, wool, silk, or cotton or the synthetics like rayon, nylon and tencel, each acts differently, accepts dyes differently and will have different characteristics with the structure used when woven. Fine handwoven fabrics still influence fashion designers. WHAT BENEFIT DO WEAVERS AND FIBER ARTISTS RECEIVE FROM PRACTICING THEIR CRAFT? Any craft or skill benefits from practice. Weaving engages the senses in many ways, and it is not until we gain confidence 22

in our basic skills that we perhaps are able to engage in more open forms of creativity. For me, weaving can be very meditative. There are many repetitive moments in weaving. Starting a project requires winding the warp threads. I approach it like a Tai Chi exercise – one hand takes the yarn smoothly to the left and around a peg then passes back to the middle where my other hand takes the thread and passes it around the right side. This is not the 30a you know and love from spring breaks spent with sunburned kids, bikes and busy streets. Seaside in the shoulder season promises all you love about the 30a community: restaurants galore, flat path biking to one of the state parks, long walks on the clean Gulf of Mexico beach, sunset drinks at Bud & Alley’s and a comfortable beach rental to call your own. It’s a perfect perch for reading or a quiet conversation. Christie and her family have decorated the house with just a few beachy touches, but it’s not packed to the gills, allowing visitors to plop down beach bags, spread out a puzzle or roll out yoga mats 24

Couples in love should lay it all on the table, discuss who gets what, and the intricacies like how they will raise the kids, manage bills and what she calls “the analogue for living together.” “One person may be in a marriage that looks like his parents and one might be in a marriage from a magazine,” says Brenner, the unflinching founder of Brenner Law Group, with offices in Roswell. “It’s best to talk about expectations and consequences when you’re happy, not during such an intense time of your life.” Brenner has been practicing law for 35 years, helping couples before they separate, and helping navigate the many tribulations and tributaries of divorce if the time comes. She has a unique perspective, not only as a successful divorcee, but also a licensed counseling psychologist and ordained rabbi. And, while she brings a thoroughly thoughtful perspective to the table, she is also a fierce negotiator and bulldog of a litigator. All of these skills are tapped when helping a couple write a prenuptial contract. “There was once a time when our families were tribes and marriage was a business deal, with a contract,” says Brenner. Now, couples are expected to leap from love to the business of marriage with little or no discussion of (or guidance in) the nuts and bolts of running a household, family or relationship. “It’s important to define the economic workings of a marriage, to protect assets as well 26

as outline the non-financial terms,” says Brenner. “Talk about kids, those already in the family from different marriages, and those yet to be born. ON ONE OF THOSE RARE SUNNY AFTERNOONS AFTER CHRISTMAS, I SAT DAYDREAMING IN A COFFEE SHOP NEAR MY HOUSE AND FOUND DEB BOWMAN ON SPOTIFY. I had, of course, already listened to her music at the insistence of our friend, the late Don Thomas Hayes (God rest his sassy soul) and recently at Bread & Butterfly in Inman Park where she played with a combo, lulling us all into a welcomed state of luxurious chill on a Friday night. Deb’s voice is creamy and smooth, but she’s as much vixen as angel. With impressive stage, film and television credits, she has been a fixture among Atlanta entertainers since moving here from New York. Whether belting out Broadway and big band ballads or softly seducing you with sultry standards, Deb’s style is all her own. She’s got a big voice and a powerful stage presence, all wrapped up in a pretty petite little package you’ll want to put in your pocket and pull out when you most need a boost. That’s just what she did when I first met her, at the bedside of our friend Don Thomas, the “Mayor of Virginia Highland.” He suffered a stroke and Deb led a small rag tag choir of some of his best and oldest friends as we gathered at Grady Hospital to serenade what was left of our friend. At that point, there was only the rise and fall of his chest that told us he was listening. We did our best with one his favorites, Moon River, Deb singing sweetly and strong with tears pooling then falling. She is a gift to anyone lucky enough to hear her perform. It gives me the chance to express myself creatively to a wide variety of people.” Robkin also lived in Israel for more than eight years, where she was a teacher, and started the first bookstore/coffee shop there. She moved into figurative clay art in the past several years. “I fell into this figurative world by accident. I had never formed a face before and didn’t know I could do it. While on a trip to Croatia, I took a picture of an elderly woman. My husband told her she was so beautiful and she blushed like a 14 year old, and I knew that if I could capture that kind of expression, it would be the perfect thing. It was way out of my comfort zone; it was just serendipity.” “Part of what I love about this story is that this woman, who I saw for only two or three minutes, has given me a new direction in life and a new way to see and meet people. She has no idea how she has enriched my life, but we don’t have any idea what we may have done for others and what impact we might have on them.
