APPLE CIDER GUMMY BEARS From Supercharge Your Gut by Lee Holmes GF WF DF Makes about 12 Finally, a yummy gummy that’s good for your tummy. Bring it on. 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) apple juice (no added sugar) 60 ml (2 fl oz/14 cup) apple cider vinegar 3 tablespoons powdered gelatin In a small saucepan, warm the apple juice and vinegar over medium heat. When it starts to bubble, remove from the heat. Sprinkle the gelatin on top and whisk briskly until dissolved. Strain. Pour into teddy bear molds, or other molds of your choice, or into a small lined baking tin. Refrigerate for 1–2 hours, or until set. Turn out of the molds, or cut into small squares to serve. TIME TO GIVE Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) and Northside Hospital are hosting the 17th annual Totes 2 Tots drive to collect backpacks and suitcases for foster children in Georgia. Donations of new or nearly new backpacks, duffel bags and suitcases will be accepted at locations across the state. More than 14,000 children, from infants to teenagers, are currently in the foster care system in Georgia. Many of these children shuffle their belongings in garbage bags when they are removed from their homes. Totes 2 Tots aims to change that by giving every foster child in Georgia a new or nearly new backpack, duffel bag or suitcase. Since Totes 2 Tots launched in 2003, the annual volunteer event has collected and distributed more than 55,000 bags.

I HAVE 2,831 DOWNLOADED SONGS IN MY ITUNES LIBRARY AND WITHOUT INTERNET, I THOUGHT I’D START LISTENING TO MY OWN PERSONAL SOUNDTRACK FROM A TO Z. I’d just checked into my super swank deluxe tent at Under Canvas, the new glamping camp outside Gatlinburg, Tenn., where the sight of NO SERVICE on my phone shook me to the core. I wandered through the grassy village of 40+ platform tents and found Stephanie, a friendly staffer, who sent my family an email from her hard-wired laptop, reassuring them I’d arrived but would be offline for two days. I unpacked, hanging up my hats, bags and jammies on a rough hewn tripod made of thin logs tied with rope and surveyed the comfortable tent. I rolled back the creamy coated canvas door panels, unzipped the large screen windows on the other three walls, positioned the quiet fans just right and plopped down on the king bed awash with fluffy pillows and soft white sheets. Let me just check my email…I mean, now what? Ok, I had plenty of writing to catch up on so I launched my Spotify for some music. Nope, not this time. 12

That’s how I landed in my iTunes library, which I admit, I don’t pull up unless I’m on a plane without internet. I sorted the tunes alphabetically by title, thereby mixing the artists and genres. First up was “A Hard Day’s Night (Live at The Lighthouse)” by the Ramsey Lewis Trio. His “Sun Godess” album was one of the first records I listened to on loop. That is, I listened to both sides, over and over. And, my husband and I caught him at The Blue Note a few years ago, so my soundtrack was off to a meaningful start. Since there is little to NO phone coverage on the quiet grounds, I had to drive 10 minutes down the winding country roads into Pigeon Forge, where roller coasters, arcades and pancake houses were already bustling with a different kind of traveller all together. You can make a simple paddle with a paper plate and craft stick or use your hand. Q: WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD GOAL FOR A FAMILY TO SET FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITY / EXERCISE? A: Set reasonable expectations. Maybe don't start with a 10 mile hike... start small. About 20 minutes is usually the duration that works for most. When the kiddos are older, you should include them in asking what sorts of things they like to do, would like to try, or places they would like to go to get activity in. Everyone benefits from fresh air and movement. Q: WE LIVE IN A VERY ACTIVE COMMUNITY. CAN YOU SUGGEST A FEW FUN WAYS OR PLACES IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR KIDS TO GET ACTIVE? A: Neighborhood walks (or bike rides) are always a good idea. Turning it into a neighborhood scavenger hunt is even better. Have a list of items to look for on your walk, like a house with a red door, a street sign, colors, shapes, animals etc. My family also loves the Dunwoody Nature Center. It has so much to offer in terms of looking for things in nature, hiking, or just enjoying the playground. Also, hunts are fun for everyone and not just for Easter! We did a turkey feather hunt around Thanksgiving using craft feathers and a bucket with pictures of a turkey taped on it! Q: TO KEEP OUR KIDS FIT, WHAT SHOULD WE MODEL AS PARENTS WHEN IT COMES TO DIET AND FITNESS? A: Model good behavior, offer opportunities, and keep things positive. Both exercise and food should be a positive experience that kids enjoy, understand, and feel the benefits of. Encourage kids to try new activities and foods, even if it is just once or twice. If it’s a no go, try it again at a later time and encourage good choices. Also, allow your kids to work out with you even if it is only for one or two minutes. It lets your kids know exercising is important in your family.
