1 RENESHA RAGIN “Volunteering is my passion and it uplifts my spirit to give back to my community,” says Renesha Ragin, real estate specialist in Sandy Springs with Northside Hospital Property Management and Northside employee volunteer. “A smile and a helping hand goes a long way.” Renesha leads Northside’s MS Walk team, is a March for Babies team captain, and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Atlanta Community Food Bank and Northside’s annual Day of Giving. Called “a star volunteer” by her peers, she often recruits her coworkers for volunteer projects. “My motivation is to spread awareness and make it contagious to the people you surround yourself with,” says Renesha.

2 REBECCA GUINN Rebecca Guinn founded Lifeline and Lifeline runs the shelters for Fulton and Dekalb Counties. “I’m passionate about providing humane and affordable methods people to help reduce the cat population and save cats from being neglected and starving on the streets.”

HOW YOU CAN LEND A HAND: 1) Volunteer at the Chamblee or Avondale locations and interact with animals that need to build trust with humans. Animals cannot be adopted unless they are able to overcome past abuse and fear and experience a positive, gentle and loving experience with a human. 2) Foster a senior pet or a pet that is black in color. It is heartbreaking that senior pets are abandoned at the shelter because the current owners no longer want the daily work or maintenance of caring for a loyal companion. Pets that are black in color are the least adopted. 3) Donate to the Amazon wish list that Lifeline has posted with products desperately needed to assist the massive volume of kittens and puppies that have inundated the shelter during 2018. 14

A: Most of the holiday is typically spent working and making sure those in our community are safe, however it helps that my crew is literally a part of my family. No matter the day, holiday or not, we love spending the shift together whether it’s working out, playing games, or watching movies during any small break we get. Q: WHAT SPECIAL THINGS DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FAMILY BEFORE OR AFTER TO MAKE UP FOR THE TIME SPENT DURING THE HOLIDAY AT THE FIREHOUSE? A: After 11 years of being of service, my family and I just consider it the norm, and typically celebrate either the day before or after the holiday I spend at the station. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING? A: My favorite thing is the nature of this job – I never know what I am walking into but you always have your brother walking right beside you. The bond I have with my crew is inseparable. Q: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LOVE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY YOU SERVE? A: Sandy Springs is extremely thankful and supportive of our department – which makes it incredibly gratifying. Q: WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? A: I’m thankful for both my family and my fire department family. I’m thankful for the opportunity I have to be a foster parent. Our top priority is being there in case there is a situation that needs our attention, but I also enjoy working out and team sports with the crew when we can sneak in the time – which is always a blast especially on holidays. Q: WHAT SPECIAL THINGS DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FAMILY BEFORE OR AFTER TO MAKE UP FOR THE TIME SPENT DURING THE HOLIDAY AT THE FIREHOUSE? A: My family will usually come to the station and visit at some point during the holiday and we all have dinner together with the crew. Usually everyone’s family stops by at some point on holidays, which is nice. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING? A: So much – I really consider the job that we get to do as one of the best. I guess my favorite thing is the satisfaction of being able to be there for people on their worst of days. Q: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LOVE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY YOU SERVE? A: Sandy Springs is incredibly generous and it continually amazes me. Everyone is so supportive of the work we do. Q: WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? A: Hands down my family - my baby boy Carter, my lovely wife Katie, and the great “second” family here at the station that I spend a third of my life with. 20

Last year we went to Fogo de Chao. Even holidays are work days for us at the station, so it's nice we can celebrate on a different day. Q: WHAT SPECIAL THINGS DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FAMILY BEFORE OR AFTER TO MAKE UP FOR THE TIME SPENT DURING THE HOLIDAY AT THE FIREHOUSE? A: My family always makes sure to stay flexible with times. Typically, we celebrate together as a family in December when we go on a cruise every year. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING? A: Spending quality time with my crew. Especially when we get a chance to play some team sports such as indoor bay hockey! Q: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LOVE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY YOU SERVE?

Gully, besides being a really likeable guy, is a movie theater financial advisor to cinemas throughout the country. LaFont was a previous client, and Gully remarked to his wife and daughters that if LaFont would ever want to sell his Sandy Springs theater, Gully had the dream of buying it. Not only did Gully love this particular theater, but he was also inspired by the tremendous growth within the community. So, when the opportunity finally came, Gully and his family knew they had to make the dream a reality. Gully says, “Although I wasn’t

community can be. A few years back, their eldest daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, and their world was turned upside down. Gully credits as inspiration both their community and people at the hospitals who had helped their daughter over the year and a half cancer fighting process. He remembers in particular being at the hospital while his daughter was going through a bone marrow procedure where it came to him clearly… the stark realization how selfless and dedicated the workers at the hospital were and how much they were contributing to making the lives of others better. He felt charged to build something within the community that would serve as roots for him and his family, as well as give a place of enjoyment to help make this community even better. Thankfully now his daughter is in remission, and that charge to build roots in the form of The Springs Cinema & Taphouse is holding firm. All of us remember the old LaFont theater for its cinematic pictures, and The Springs Cinema & Taphouse continues that tradition. Owner Gully says, “One thing that we won’t be changing at The Springs is the quality of the films. Lefont was always known for great movies, and we plan to maintain that while expanding the programming to incorporate more family films and alternative programming to include throwback movies, classics and special screenings. The great movies will still be here; we just want to give you a better atmosphere to enjoy them.” And the atmosphere is certainly incredible with the many renovations completed and the few more being completed right now. Gully’s first step was to overhaul the eight-screen theatre with the city’s only heated luxury recliners. And as someone who has now made this their go-to place for movies, I can tell you first hand-GAME CHANGER! They also upgraded the sound system, replaced and enlarged the screens, renovated the restrooms and replaced the air conditioning system. The lobby will also be updated with all new finishes, a completely rebuilt concessions area with enhanced food offerings, and the addition of a full bar featuring a wide variety of craft beer, cocktails and wines this month, just in time for the holiday season. There’s something just heartwarming about a family-owned business in a family supported community like ours, and The Springs Cinema & Taphouse is no exception. 24
