Getting ready to put the SUP in the water! See you on the river!
e are thrilled to present our first ever "Best Of " issue, teeming with 50 fabulous businesses that you have chosen as your favorites. We were bowled over to see the tally, more than 8,000 of you chiming in to vote for the shops and services that you visit most often. More than 4,000 people visited our website in January for the nomination process. Then, twice that hit "send" on our final survey. Thank you all for showing that shopping local still takes the gold.
We're having a party this month to celebrate with the winners and will share photos from the award ceremony in the next issue. In the meantime, DO look for the BEST OF window decals at stores you visit and be sure to congratulate the businesses who have earned the PNL Best of 2017 designation. They are all listed in this issue, along with the runners up who also deserve a hearty pat on the back. We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate our FOURTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE than by honoring the businesses that make our community so special.

SHARE THEIR STORY From Tilar J. Mazzeo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Widow Clicquot, comes an extraordinary and gripping account of Irena Sendler—the “female Oskar Schindler”—who took staggering risks to save 2,500 children from death and deportation in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II. Granted access to the Warsaw ghetto as public health specialist, she made dangerous trips through the city’s sewers, hid children in coffins, snuck them under overcoats at checkpoints, and slipped them through secret passages in abandoned buildings. Department and the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department work together to provide car seats and education to financially eligible families in DeKalb County. This program is funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to help ensure Georgia’s children are safe while riding in motor vehicles. Since 2007, the education, car seats and booster seats provided through the Mini Grant prevented serious injury or death and saved more than 300 of Georgia’s children who were involved in crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car seats reduce fatal injuries by 71 percent among infants and by 54 percent among children ages 1 to 4 years in passenger cars. Car seats offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash, and they are most effective when installed and used correctly. Nearly three out of every four car seats are not used properly, placing children at unnecessary risk. In DeKalb County, the Dunwoody Police Department, along with DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department, educate parents and caregivers on how to properly install and use car seats, offer car seat inspections and provide car seats and booster seats to financially eligible families.

beyond the call of duty in service to our citizens. Perimeter North Lifestyle proudly salutes these patriots from 2016.
OFFICER OF THE YEAR (4TH QUARTER WINNER): OFFICER JAMES “J.B.” TATE
Officer Tate's most notable achievement during 2016 was his tireless efforts to research, propose and implement a 40th Anniversary Commemoration and Memorial of the death of Officer Thomas S. Atkisson. Officer Atkisson was a DeKalb County police officer who was killed in the line of duty on December 14,1976, while patrolling an area which is now part of the City of Dunwoody. As a result of Officer Tate's efforts, Dunwoody's Mayor and City Council named the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Perimeter Center West as the Thomas S. Atkisson Memorial Intersection with a permanently affixed street sign. Officer Atkisson's family, friends and former coworkers were invited to the December 12, 2016, City Council Meeting, where the officer's widow was presented a memorial plaque commemorating her late husband. An additional memorial plaque is now permanently displayed in DPD's front lobby in the officer's honor. Officer Atkisson is the only officer in the City of Dunwoody who has died in the line of duty.
PSR Vanessa Ollee
Officer James “J.B.” Tate
EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR (1ST QUARTER WINNER): PSR VANESSA OLLEE
Police Service Representative Ollee was recognized for showing exceptional talent, enthusiasm, commitment and a great attitude during 2016. She displays genuineness in dealing with others, and goes above and beyond to take care of those with whom she works. Vanessa has also come in on her days off to help with fingerprinting and to cover for other shifts as needed. 16

CHIEF’S AWARD: SERGEANT ROBERT PARSONS

Officers have saved five lives through the use of Naloxone/Narcan since the program was implemented.
Sergeant Robert Parsons
CHIEF’S AWARD: OFFICER MICHAEL CHEEK
Officer Cheek was recognized for his outstanding contribution to the department and the citizens of Dunwoody through the development and implementation of The Griffin Project. The Griffin Project is an outreach effort aimed at creating successful interactions between law enforcement and children with special needs.
Sergeant Jason Dove
Officer Michael Cheek
Officer Nathan Berryman
MEDAL OF MERITORIOUS SERVICE:
The Medal of Meritorious Service is awarded to an officer for outstanding performance during a lifesaving event. SERGEANT JASON DOVE & OFFICER NATHAN BERRYMAN
Sergeant Dove and Officer Berryman responded to a possible drug overdose. Upon arriving on scene, both officers observed two subjects who were unconscious, unresponsive, and barely breathing as a result of a suspected heroin overdose. After assessing each patient, the officers immediately administered a dose of Naloxone in the patient’s thigh. While observing both patients, Sergeant Dove's patient started to regain consciousness but Officer Berryman's patient remained unresponsive with a shallow pulse and undetectable breathing. After approximately two minutes, Officer Berryman administered a second dose of Naloxone to his patient at which time the subject started to breathe better on his own as he regained consciousness. Fire rescue and EMS personnel arrived on scene to transport both patients to a local hospital for further treatment. Both subjects regained full consciousness and are expected to fully recover. A
lex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, invites
volunteers across the country to take a “stand” against child-
hood cancer when Alex’s Lemonade Days returns June 3-11. Local childhood cancer hero family, the Bowies of Sandy Springs, participated in their first Lemonade Days in 2016. They raised more than $3,800. The Bowies will host another Lemonade Days stand again in 2017 in honor of Burke. Five-year-old Burke was diagnosed at age 3 with stage IV high-risk neuroblastoma. He is currently in his last phase of treatment and has been in remission since April 2016. Around June, he will hopefully be enrolled in a clinical trial to protect him from further relapse. Alex’s Lemonade Days is a national volunteer fundraiser commemorating ALSF founder, 8-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott’s challenge to help her raise $1 million for childhood cancer cures, one cup of lemonade at a time. Volunteers are invited to host lemonade stands during the first full week of June to continue Alex’s mission and bring renewed attention to the fight against childhood cancer. Since 2004, more than 24,000 Lemonade Days stands have been held nationally, raising more than $13 million. For more information visit AlexsLemonadeDays.org.
