Hello PN Friends, NOVEMBER 2017

ome Sweet Home. What makes your home special?

Jim Newman | Jnewman@LifestylePubs.com

My home is full of our collections of books, vintage games, ancient Chinese checkerboards and cool old gumball machines. One of my favorite pieces of furniture is an antique Chinese trousseau cabinet we picked up when we lived in Hong Kong. The merchant explained that the bride's family would pack her personal items and collected home furnishings in this cabinet and her brothers would carry it to the happy couple's new home. We use our as a bar cabinet storing glassware and booze... perhaps my own personal trousseau? Repurposing furniture is a smart way to renovate, with dropping a ton of cash. I'm no whiz, and that's why we turn to professionals like those in this issue. I hope you find inspiration!

SAFE TRAINING The Dunwoody Police Department has signed on as a participating agency in the LEO Near Miss program that was initially funded by the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office at the Department of Justice for the Police Foundation. This program is a voluntary, non-disciplinary reporting system that allows law enforcement personnel to read about and anonymously share close calls, or near misses, which provide lessons that can protect others from similar incidents. Modeled after the International Association of Fire Chief’s reporting program, the goal of the LEO Near Miss initiative is to share stories from law enforcement agencies from around the country. This will ultimately enhance the safety and vigilance of officers so the department can identify trends and certain risk factors faced daily. Once these near-miss incidents are analyzed, the department can adjust its training, policies and/or procedures to maximize offi-

venue, EBD4, the exciting show premiers with an opening celebration November 11, and runs through December 15. Beginning with the Pop Art movement, a prevalent cultural misunderstanding promoted the mistaken notion that new and visionary ideas belong only to the young. The truth is, as artists age the chances increase for brilliant new expressions with a marked richness in their art. The premise of the “40 over 40” invitational exhibit is to show that fresh ideas and talent come from people of all ages, and that artists with decades of life experience have even more to offer. "40 over 40" presents works by Atlanta–area artists age 40 and over, whose careers range from newly discovered to seasoned. Under the curatorial efforts of Elyse Defoor of Brookhaven, the exhibit offers fresh counterbalance to the art-world ageism faced by many artists during their later years. "When considering the impressive art made by famous older artists later in life such as Georgia O’Keeffe, and the many well-known mature contemporary artists such as Kara Walker, Anish Kapoor, and 100 year-old Carmen Herrera, this show champions artists who continue to take risks, explore, and do the work that they are meant to do,” says curator Defoor.

very now and then, Perimeter North Lifestyle likes to take the temperature of the real estate market. This month in our HOME issue,

we asked Angela Cashion of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby's International Realty to share a few notable listings at different price points.

A LITTLE ABOUT ANGELA PNL: Why did you choose this market for your business? AC: I chose this market because it’s familiar – not only professionally, but personally. In

addition to Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty’s extraordinary marketing, resources and expertise, my business is also, in part, a referral-based operation. Many of my friends live the metro area, as do I, and this helps to further establish my local awareness. These factors, combined with many others, make Atlanta a wonderful market to be in. PNL: Where do you like to grab lunch, cocktails and dinner with friends? AC: For cocktails with clients, friends and family, I love stopping by Yebo Beach Haus. The

atmosphere – year round with Yebo Ski Haus in the winter – is inviting, personal and always entertaining. When it comes to dining, Kyma is one of my favorite Atlanta eateries. Its lively environment (ideal for casual dining and larger parties) and tasteful selection of Mediterranean classics are phenomenal – not to mention the amazing staff. Two of my favorite dishes created by Chef Pano are his famous grilled octopus and the incredible baby beet salad. PNL: Giving back is important to our readers. Tell us about how you engage and contribute. AC: I like to stay active within my community. Currently, I hold a host position for Northside

Hospital’s events committee benefiting leukemia and women’s cancers. This year, we’re looking forward to two fundraisers: Night Before the Harvest and Wine, Women and Shoes. I am also active with Children’s Health Care of Atlanta and am currently working on the annual Christmas Luncheon. Road Trip

n the picturesque North Carolina mountains sits a town from the pages of a story

book: Banner Elk. Every business boasts cottage windows and rustic wood; industrial buildings are pleasantly absent from view. A mountain backdrop, and the friendly presence of locals, draw visitors from far and wide. Only five hours from Atlanta, it may become your favorite mountain escape. WHERE TO DINE

Banner Elk has the farm-to-table thing going on; dishes are trendy, but still hold to their roots. Dunn's Deli is a simple diner offering hearty breakfast bowls with French toast, sausage, eggs and cheese. The Perry House on the hill above the deli also belongs to the Dunns, and breakfast is included in the stay. Bayou Smokehouse's Salad Evangeline represents Louisiana Cajun culture, while offering more contemporary ingredients like field greens, fried green tomatoes, smoked crackers, crawfish and shrimp accented with rémoulade. It's modern, farm fresh and Cajun at its best. Nicole Palazzo displays generations of culinary mastery at Chef's Table, recently merging from sushi to an upscale farm-totable menu. North Carolina trout with caper lemon butter and locally sourced root veggies for a refreshing beet salad with field greens, shaved onions, fried goat cheese and toasted pine nuts are great depictions of culinarily rich Banner Elk.Palazzo can be found cooking up Italian favorites during the day, at Sorrento's Bistro. The family recipe crab cake with lobster cream sauce and veggies is mostly delicious chunks of crab, with the slightest bit of crunch and seasoning on the outer edges. Stonewalls has been a staple in the community for years, but just revamped its classic 26

menu. Prime rib is still the melt-in-your-mouth house special, and some of the best, most tender scallops you'll ever taste are sometimes featured, with a berry-based sauce. Banner Elk Cafe offers a versatile two-menu spread from wraps, salads and seafood, to amazing sides like the pasta salad. With its vast selection, families with picky eaters can find refuge here. BOOZE WITH VIEWS

Beech Mountain Resort's Skybar is a short chair lift ride away, at 5506' elevation. Craft beer can be enjoyed from the bar, which is inside a yurt with glass walls for a panoramic view of the Appalachian Mountains. Mark Ralston began brewing beer in his Japan dormitory years ago, when his wallet was lighter. While he admits closet brewing didn't create the ideal beer, he has completely mastered the craft at Flat Top Mountain Brewery. Come enjoy a Speckled Trout English Ale at the rustic bar while peering through a window at the brewing process. With views of vineyards and rolling mountains, you can enjoy the unique cucumber, watermelon, jalapeño sangria before melting into the blueberry pie notes of sweet ice wine at Banner Elk Winery. Banner Elk Red wine is paired with local Trosley Farm chocolate for a harmonious contrast of earthy and sweet. FUN THINGS TO DO

Banner Elk's strong arts allure has added a sense of timelessness; with the newest addition of professional theater group, Ensemble Stage at the Historical Banner Elk School, visitors can see a live spectacle. The groundwork for theater was laid by Lees-McRae, a college with a strong influence among the community. Lees-McRae Summer Theater puts on exciting musicals, like Legally Blonde, through the warmer months. Apple Hill Farm opened to the public in 2006 and remains a Banner Elk favorite. It's situated well off the beaten path, but worth the journey to see an array of animals such as donkeys, horses, chickens, and yes, adorable alpacas. Their store offers socks, yarn and other fun stuff woven from Apple Hill alpaca wool. "People just fall in love with alpacas," says Lee Rankin, owner. Rankin works to make the experience educational while providing a deep connection to animals. Banner Elk is built around nature, and the family can learn about native animals through the Dan and Dianne May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Each year, more than 1,500 animals such as birds, snakes, bobcats, and turtles are admitted for treatment, with the goal of eventually returning them to the wild. On occasion, an animal cannot readapt and will be given an ambassador position, in which they are a part of educational demonstrations. A Red-Tailed Hawk and several owls are among current ambassadors. The third weekend in October is the 40th annual Woolly Worm Festival welcoming people from all over the Southeast. Or, head up Thanksgiving weeken to choose and cut your own Christmas tree. The first weekend in December is “A Small Town Christmas” with a parade, holiday-themed activities and a holiday themed play. Truly a happy holiday. November 2017 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com

hether on a mission to preserve Earth by not contributing emissions, to save money on purchasing the always fluctuating price of gas, to cash in on tax benefits, or to simply

enjoy the use of solely electricity, the all-new 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is highly impressive. On a ride from Atlanta to Asheville, North Carolina, I had ample time to get accustomed to the numerous bells and whistles this new subcompact crossover presented while passing the true test—proving the 208-mile journey could make it on one full charge. And it did, effortlessly. Chevrolet’s boast of a 238-mile capacity (255 city and 217 highway) was not only confirmed, but appreciated. The smooth ride was perfectly balanced with an aggressive engine when applicable; it punched a class-leading 200 horsepower at 266 lb.-ft. of torque, resulting in going zero to 60 in about 6.5 seconds. So much for the golf cart comparisons. Presented in two trims, the LT comes with the Electronic Precision Shift, Michelin self-sealing tires, one-pedal driving, Regen On Demand, and a 10.2-inch diagonal color touch-screen, while the Premier takes it up a notch adding surround vision for a birds-eye view and a rear camera mirror. Charging the Bolt EV is also very simple. For home, the professionally installed AeroVironment 240-volt/32-amp charging unit with a 25-ft cord will get you 25 miles per hour, while a DC Fast Charging station will give you 90 miles in a half hour. Similar to how a credit card is used to buy gas, every Bolt EV is equipped with a ChargePoint card so that drivers are worry-free with access to thousands of public charging stations. (There are many apps--such as PlugShare--drivers can download to help locate chargers to further ease the mind.) The Bolt EV's also gracious with numerous amenities to keep owners in tune with the latest technology including 4G LTE WiFi; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; the myChevrolet mobile app to control automobile functions from remote locations; and the optional, highly recommended OnStar response system. Ultimately, the plethora of awards the Bolt EV has received from various automobile authorities are not only justified, but well deserved. Add Driver’s Notebook to the list. BASE PRICE: The LT Trim is $37,495; Premium is $41,780 with all

options as reviewed. GAS MILEAGE: 255 city/217 highway/238 combined
