ouisiana native and Louisiana State University School of Dentistry dental school grad, Dr. Troy Schulman established his private

practice in Dunwoody in 1997. The aesthetic and general dental practice was purchased from a retiring dentist who had been in the building since the 1980’s. The office was ripe for reno and updates. Dr. Schulman’s strong ties to his roots and Louisiana heritage had a major part of the renovation directives for Linda Huband of Huband House. To Schulman, Louisiana means an unforgettable french flair, beautiful architecture and the instant sense of comfort and hospitality. “He requested the office be renovated to be comfortable and updated, yet with a vintage feel,” said Huband.  “Have you ever seen a New Orleans style courtyard in a dental office? Or reclaimed wood beams from a 100 year old farm, a tin ceiling and speaking of barn, of course barn doors.” This isn’t your typical dental office.

Turkey Love ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | November 2016

he National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) was founded in 1973 when there were only an estimated 1.3 million turkeys remaining in the North American wilderness. Since then, NWTF staff and over 350,000 members have worked together to enhance the wild turkey population by conserving upland habitat and preserving hunting heritage. Because of their work, there are currently more than 7 million wild turkeys in North America, with an increased habitat quality for countless species. While NWTF is a national organization, their headquarters is located at the Wild Turkey Center in Edgefield, SC, which includes an outdoor education center, a 3,000 square-foot conference center, the Turkey Shoppe (NWTF’s gift shop), a large warehouse, the Palmetto Complex, and a 7,200 squarefoot museum. The Winchester Museum is very unique as it is the only museum in the world dedicated to the restoration, management, and hunting of wild turkeys in North America. It houses numerous attractions, including the world’s largest turkey call, along with many interactive exhibits to attract visitors of all ages. A few notable experiences include a USDA Forest Service helicopter, which simulates a fire burn in a field; a virtual reality theater, which places visitors deep in a spring forest at the break of dawn, mixing the sounds of nature with early morning calls of wild turkeys flying down from their roosts; animated storytellers to help bring the history of turkey hunting and conservation to life; and a shooting simulator. For guests that prefer more live action, the National Wild Turkey Federation recently launched a 5-year project beginning with a first class shooting range called the Palmetto Complex. The complex is home to 5 trap and skeet shooting courses, 3 sporting clay courses, 5 3D archery courses, and 1 rifle and pistol shooting course. While the shooting range is already open to visitors, and has already hosted several shooting competitions, the plan is to expand the complex to include a 6,000 square-foot pavilion, 185-space RV park, and 6,000 square-foot educational building. The Federation’s CEO, George Thornton, states the overall purpose of the project is “to encourage the protection of more land, not only for hunting, but for bird-watching, camping, fishing, hiking, and all the things that people do outside.”  Whether your interest is in wild turkeys, history, or just an afternoon of family fun, the Wild Turkey Center has plenty of attractions to entertain kids of all ages, especially those kid at heart. Atlanta has consistently been a burgeoning culinary epicenter of the Southeast, justifying its numerous Kitchen Design winners over the years. One of the evening’s attendees—renowned millwork and space designer Jane Hollman from Studio Entourage on Old Ivy Rd—happily emphasized the benefits of entering the contest along with some invaluable strategies that assisted in her success to more than 80 attendees. “It’s pretty amazing to have this much design throughout Atlanta,” Sub-Zero Vice President of Sales Georgia Division Rob Maxam shared while hosting the gathering. “With all of this talent in one place, Atlanta has had two national winners in the last five contests and I suspect we may have another one to congratulate very soon.” Adding to the festivities, world-acclaimed

chef and restauranteur Kevin Gillespie provided his culinary expertise with an entertaining on-site cooking demonstration using Sub-Zero’s appliances to create savory bites for the engaged audience. A proud native Atlantan and graduate of the Atlanta Institute of Art, Gillespie owns nationally acclaimed eateries Gunshow and Revival, while participating in numerous food initiatives throughout the city and further solidifying Atlanta’s reputation in the food industry. Ultimately, while Sub-Zero and Wolf continues to be the leader of kitchen innovation, they will also remain dedicated to honor those who share the same passion through their Kitchen Design Contest. Parting Thoughts

ARTICLE MOLLY S. COLLINS

I

Parti

ng

n 2005, the Sparling family decided that a suitable location for our Thanksgiving festivities would be the Monkey Bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a dimly lit private club on the edge of Main Street. They transformed the place, where a combined playlist of Motown, 70s and 80s hits and an occasional piano ballad recorded by my late maternal grandfather played softly. The table was surrounded by not only my mother’s brothers and sisters but a few lonely hearts that my relatives adopted into our family. It was less of a stereotypical forced family holiday gathering, and more of a rambunctious party. I remember, against my better judgement, trespassing to a section of the restaurant that my mother told us not to go to and finding a swing hanging there. All too enticing. My brother, Patty, who was 5, fearlessly trekked over to the swing and hopped on. He basked in the glory of having the entire gathering  marvel in his “cuteness.” They smiled at him in his little Gapkids button up shirt as he giggled, swinging to and fro. I stood there watching, too scared to get on, fearing my mother’s loving wrath (which never actually came). As if finding a forbidden swing wasn’t enough fun, one of my many musically inclined uncles picked up a guitar and started playing a song that only a more youthful version of myself could comprehend and remember. As I reminisce, I think it was one of the first times I experienced  live music. I now envy how he played so effortlessly and yet so passionately, finger picking rapidly a melody that he had likely made up seconds before his worn, calloused fingers hit the strings. The meal, though the haziest of the memory, was a blend of both vegetarian and traditional, due to the meatless nature of my family. I distinctly remember carrying a pan of luke-warm roast potatoes into the eatery (the potluck was cooked in home kitchens, ferried to the Monkey Bar) and seeing it later, a part of the spread my family devoured. My sister (who was nearly 14) sat next to me at the long table, formed from many bar tables that were earlier scooted together. Her face had an expression of someone who was peering at a wound of some sort, as a plate of colorless tofurky was passed clockwise our way. Though I did not want partake in the vegetarian meal, and I snarled at my mother who took a small piece off her plate and placed it onto mine, deciding that it was my turn to try it. Though the Monkey Bar is now closed, and was likely far less glamorous than my young mind once thought it was, it will remain as one of my most precious family memories, serving as a reminder of how much I truly adore my adaptable, boisterous and audacious family.
