Around the Table in Peoria There’s something about food that has a way of bringing people together. Some of our favorite memories are made around a table, whether it’s dinner with family, a long-overdue lunch with a friend, a date night at a favorite local spot or simply picking up takeout after a busy day. That’s one of the reasons I always enjoy our Food & Drink issue. It gives us the opportunity to celebrate the restaurants, chefs, small businesses and people who add so much flavor to our community, but it’s also a reminder that food is such a big part of the way we experience life here in Peoria. As our community continues to grow, so does our local food scene. There are always new places to discover, longtime favorites to revisit and local businesses that quickly become part of our regular routines. I love hearing about the stories behind these places and the people who pour so much into creating experiences for the rest of us to enjoy. October feels like the perfect time to celebrate all of it. The weather is finally beginning to shift, patio season is getting closer, football weekends are here and we’re heading into a season filled with gatherings, celebrations and plenty of time around the table. Inside this issue, we’re highlighting some of the people and places that make our local food and drink scene special. I hope you find a new restaurant to add to your list, learn something about a local favorite or feel inspired to make plans with the people you love. Because while a great meal is always worth remembering, it’s usually the people sitting around the table who make it special. Here’s to good food, great company and enjoying everything this season has to offer right here in Peoria.

“The thing that has never changed is the opportunity to create an experience for someone,” Estes says. “Food has a way of bringing people together, celebrating milestones or simply making an ordinary day a little better.” His cooking reflects that philosophy. Rather than creating something unexpected simply for the sake of being different, Estes looks for ways to give familiar flavors personality while keeping dishes approachable. “The food has to make sense,” he says. That same philosophy is now carrying into Sparrow’s newest offering: brunch. Designed as another reason for guests to gather, the menu balances recognizable favorites with the creativity Sparrow has become known for. Dishes like the Short Rib Benny and Lox Nest bring unexpected touches to brunch classics while remaining comforting and approachable. CONTINUED >
For owner Emily Ganem, that balance was important from the beginning. After seeing the West Valley embrace Squid Ink Sushi, she and Parker recognized an opportunity to create something different: a restaurant equally suited for date night, a milestone celebration, dinner with family or an impromptu evening with friends. “We wanted Sparrow to feel like part of the community,” Ganem says, with every decision centered around creating a place guests would return to again and again. In the kitchen, Chef Schuyler Estes brings more than three decades of experience to that vision. His career has taken him through a wide range of cuisines, restaurant openings and leadership roles, but his approach continues to come back to the experience created around food.

“My goal was to create a menu that people would genuinely want to come back for,” Estes says. “There should be a little bit of discovery, but ultimately, the food needs to make you happy.” Whether gathering for brunch, dinner, cocktails or a celebration, Sparrow’s purpose remains simple: creating memorable food, genuine hospitality and a place people want to experience again.

Sunny Brew Coffee may have started inside a 35-square-foot horse trailer, but for Jessika and Jason Landavazo, the dream behind it was always much bigger. Family was at the heart of the idea. Jessika had always loved coffee and wanted an opportunity to get out of the house, meet new people, and do something she genuinely enjoyed. But she and Jason also wanted to build a life that let them stay present for their three children. “We wanted to create a life where we could work hard at something we loved and still be present for the moments with our kids,” Jessika says. So, they took a chance. With no previous experience owning a business, they transformed a tiny horse trailer into something uniquely their own and began serving coffee to their community. There were long days, sacrifices, and plenty of moments when they questioned whether they could make it work. Through it all, they kept leaning on each other, their faith, and the reason they started. Their children have grown alongside the business, watching firsthand what it means to believe in an idea, work through
uncertainty and keep showing up. For Jessika and Jason, that may be one of Sunny Brew’s greatest successes. Eventually, their little trailer led to something they once only imagined: a brick-and-mortar coffee shop. But even as Sunny Brew grew, its purpose remained the same. “It’s not just about making good coffee,” Jessika says. “It really is about who we are and what kind of shop we want to be.” Today, that means creating a place where someone can meet a friend, bring their family, slow down for a moment, or simply feel known. Customers have become familiar faces, and familiar faces have become part of the Sunny Brew story. For Jessika and Jason, the future isn’t simply about getting bigger. It’s about continuing to build intentionally, serve the community that believed in them, and create something their children can someday look back on with pride. What started with coffee has become something far more meaningful: a family dream they get to live together. CONTINUED >

HANDMADE Traditions Meet MODERN FLAVOR at North Italia Chef Chris Curtiss brings heart, seasonality and creativity to Italian cuisine. ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHAZ ROMERO PHOTOGRAPHY
At North Italia, what arrives at the table is only part of the story. Behind every handmade pasta, slowly built sauce and seasonal dish are hours of preparation and a culinary philosophy rooted in the traditions that first made Italian food so beloved. For Chef Chris Curtiss, North Italia’s Senior Director of Culinary Operations and Research & Development, that connection between ingredients, people and tradition is what first drew him into the kitchen. “What originally inspired me to become a chef were three distinct experiences: watching raw ingredients being transformed into dishes that had a visible impact on people, the teamwork that it took to create experiences for guests, and the history and traditions that create a regional cuisine,” Curtiss says. That appreciation for tradition has helped shape North Italia as it has grown to 50 restaurants nationwide. Its menu draws from regional Italian and Italian-American cooking, but the experience remains approachable, with dishes meant to feel familiar while offering something unexpected. From handmade pastas and pizzas to small plates shared around the table, the restaurant embraces the social side of Italian dining. Today, those ideas influence a menu balancing familiar comfort with opportunities to have a little fun. Curtiss describes his approach simply: “I always try to let the ingredient or dish speak for itself. It’s my job not to get in the way or impart anything other than love and respect.” One dish that captures that philosophy particularly well is the Sunday Night Lasagna. From handmade pasta sheets to a ragu developed through hours of cooking, it represents the work happening behind the scenes.
20
H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE
“Our new lasagna embodies our scratch philosophy,” Curtiss says. “From the pasta to the ragu, there are hours of labor that are poured into this one dish.” Seasonality keeps that creativity moving. Curtiss finds inspiration in ingredients that signal the changing seasons, whether it’s spring asparagus and sugar snap peas or the tomatoes, chilis and basil that eventually give way to fall’s richer flavors. Still, for Curtiss, a memorable restaurant experience extends beyond what is on the plate. True hospitality, he says, is creating an experience where guests never have to think about everything happening behind the scenes. Instead, they can simply settle in, share a meal and enjoy the people around the table. That may be the best expression of North Italia itself: thoughtful food, plenty happening behind the scenes and a table designed for staying awhile. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . DAY
Danica Patrick trades racing speed for Provence pours and connection. Danica Patrick has spent much of her life understanding the importance of timing. On the racetrack, a fraction of a second could separate winning from losing. Today, timing looks different. It is knowing when grapes are ready to be picked, when a wine needs patience, and when it is time to slow down, pour a glass, and enjoy the people around you. This side of Danica feels far removed from the fearless driver who became one of the most recognizable women in motorsports, leading laps at the Indianapolis 500 and making history with her 2008 Indy Japan 300 victory. Yet her transition into wine feels like a natural continuation of the precision, discipline, and instinct that defined her racing career. Danica’s interest in wine began in 2006, when a dinner at The French Laundry led to wine tasting in Napa Valley the following day. What began as curiosity quickly became something deeper. Three years later, she purchased an undeveloped property on Howell Mountain and began creating a vineyard from the ground up. She named it Somnium, Latin for “dream,” and eventually began producing estate Cabernets. The vineyard introduced Danica to a different definition of success. Racing offered a finish line, a clock and a winner. Wine refuses to operate on the same schedule. “In racing, winning means being faster than everyone else that one day,” Danica says. “Winemaking doesn’t work that way. The vineyard humbles you like that.”
22
H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
That slower rhythm has become an important part of Danica’s relationship with wine. Somnium represents Napa's rugged hillsides and wines designed to evolve over time, while Danica Rosé brings another place into the story: Provence. Grown, made, and bottled in the region, the dry Provençal rosé feels especially at home in Danica’s Arizona life. Helping bring those worlds together is winemaker and business partner Julien Fayard, who grew up among the vineyards of Provence and works with Danica on both Somnium and Danica Rosé. “In Provence, we are extremely proud of our rosé,” Fayard says. “Having Danica become part of that tradition is one of the best ways to represent our culture and carry Provençal rosé throughout the world.” Their partnership also makes sense because Danica understands precision better than most, and Fayard says exceptional rosé requires plenty of it. While rosé has a carefree reputation, what happens before it reaches the glass is remarkably technical. Picking must capture flavor without sacrificing natural acidity, while pressing, protecting the juice, and controlling fermentation all require careful attention. “As easy as rosé is to drink, and it should be enjoyed without thinking twice about it, it is one of the most technical wines to produce,” Fayard says. “It requires tremendous precision and does not tolerate average work.”
“Somnium represents Napa’s rugged hillsides and wines designed to evolve over time, while Danica Rosé brings another place into the story: Provence.” CONTINUED >

“It’s a daily reminder for me as much as anyone,” Danica says. For Danica, all that work ultimately serves something simpler. Wine is about connection. It is an invitation to gather, put away distractions and spend more time at the table. That philosophy is reflected in Somnium’s label, where a small red dot reminds you that “you are here.” “It’s a daily reminder for me as much as anyone,” Danica says. “It’s easy to say be present. It’s another thing to catch yourself doing it.” That idea connects Danica’s approach with the wine culture Fayard knew growing up in France, where wine naturally belongs beside food, conversation, family and friends. “In France, wine is rarely separated from the table,” Fayard says. “It is connected to food, conversation, family, disagreement, laughter, and time. Wine is not supposed to be the entire subject of the evening. It is there to make the evening better.” It is easy to see why that philosophy resonates with Danica. Danica Rosé is dry, made without added sugar and intended to let the fruit speak for itself. Fayard believes the best rosé should appear almost effortless, even when making it is anything but. “A great rosé should feel obvious when you drink it,” he says. “It should have freshness, texture, salinity, and length, but it should never feel as though it is trying too hard.” In Arizona, that translates naturally to evenings when the pool becomes another gathering space, something goes on the grill, and a bottle is opened as the temperature begins to drop. Danica Rosé can sit beside grilled shrimp, seasonal vegetables or a cheese board assembled because friends stayed longer than expected. That ease contrasts with Somnium. With Howell Mountain Cabernet, Fayard considers power, tannin, extraction, barrel aging and what a wine might become years into the future. Rosé demands more immediate decisions around freshness, aromatics and delicacy. Yet the philosophy remains the same: listen to the vineyard, understand the fruit and avoid interfering more than necessary.
24

“It’s easy to say be present. It’s another thing to catch yourself doing it.”
Danica has embraced this philosophy beyond racing. The competitive drive has not disappeared; it has found a different outlet. Wine requires patience where racing demanded speed, with the reward found not in a trophy but in creating something capable of becoming part of someone else’s memory. Napa gives Danica the discipline and patience of the vineyard. Provence brings the ease and culture of rosé. Arizona gives her a place to bring those worlds home. Her perfect setting is refreshingly uncomplicated: the sun dropping over her Scottsdale patio, the sky turning pink, her dogs outside and a glass of Danica Rosé nearby. Wine is part of the moment, rather than the entire reason for it. As Fayard puts it, “You cannot put connection into a tank. But you can make a wine that does not interrupt the table. It invites people to stay, pour another glass, and continue talking.” For a woman who spent years racing toward the finish line, building a second chapter around giving people a reason not to rush feels fitting.

Built From the Neighborhood Up Joey Lucidi’s Peoria roots shaped Haymaker’s enduring community-focused approach. For Joey Lucidi, restaurants have always been about more than what comes out of the kitchen. They are places where families gather, relationships form and, over time, a restaurant can become part of the rhythm of a community. Joey learned that early. Growing up in Poway, California, he worked in his parents’ family restaurant, beginning as a server at 14 and taking on restaurant operations by 17. Those years gave him an understanding of both sides of hospitality: the warmth guests experience in the dining room and the work happening behind the scenes to make that experience feel effortless. In 2013, Joey brought that experience to Peoria and took a chance on a restaurant concept of his own. He called it Haymaker, a name inspired by the idea of taking one big, knockout swing at building the kind of restaurant he believed could last. The goal wasn’t to create a special-occasion destination. Joey envisioned something more woven into everyday life: a place for Saturday morning breakfast with the family, a burger on a Tuesday night or an easy meal with friends. That first Peoria restaurant became the beginning of something much larger.
ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
Today, Joey is the founder and owner of Westside Concepts, an Arizona hospitality group whose portfolio includes Haymaker, NW Coffee, Cantina Gueros, Copper & Sage, Maple & Rye and Four Corners Taphouse. Across its concepts, the company now employs hundreds of people throughout the West Valley, but the neighborhood mentality that shaped the original Haymaker remains central to Joey’s approach. Behind the familiar comfort food is also an operation built around doing much of the work in-house. Nearly 90% of Haymaker’s dining menu is prepared on-site, with culinary teams spending hours each day prepping ingredients, hand-battering items and slow-cooking pork overnight. It is an approach designed to bring together the personality of an independent neighborhood restaurant with the consistency of a much larger operation.
As Haymaker has grown to locations in North Peoria, Goodyear, Verrado and Thunderbird, the concept has continued to evolve alongside the communities it serves. That evolution can be seen in recent updates throughout the brand. Its longtime Goodyear restaurant underwent a significant remodel, drawing inspiration from the newer North Peoria and Verrado locations while maintaining the comfortable atmosphere regulars have known for years. “Goodyear has supported us from the very beginning, so it was important that this remodel honored everything guests love about this location while giving it a fresh new feel,” Joey says.
The menu is evolving, too, while keeping many of the dishes longtime guests associate with Haymaker. New Harvest Bowls offer combinations featuring grilled chicken, blackened shrimp or salmon, while heartier additions include the Boss Hog Combo, Sonoran Egg Rolls and the shareable Haymaker Trifecta. A new lineup of Back Porch Refreshers adds a playful element with flavors like prickly pear, huckleberry, coconut and white peach. For Joey, however, growth has never simply been about adding restaurants or menu items. More than 13 years after opening that first Peoria location, his original idea remains remarkably recognizable: build a restaurant people feel belongs to them. It is a philosophy that has carried Haymaker from one Peoria restaurant to a growing West Valley brand, proving that even as a restaurant grows, there is still value in feeling like the neighborhood gathering place.

maple pumpkin parfait
A FALL-INSPIRED MAPLE PUMPKIN GRANOLA WITH PUMPKIN YOGURT ARTICLE BY ALYSSA LAVY, MS, RD, CDN, CPT
4. Line a large baking sheet (9 x 13 inches works well) with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking oil spray. Transfer oats to baking sheet and spread in a thin, even layer. 5. Bake in oven for 1 hour, mixing at 30 minutes and 45 minutes. 6. Remove oats from oven briefly. Add pumpkin seeds, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and remaining ¼ C pure maple syrup. Mix with a spatula and return to oven to bake for another 30 minutes, mixing halfway through. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before using a spatula to transfer to container. Do not wait too long to transfer granola as it can stick to the parchment paper as it cools.
maple pumpkin granola
(Yields approximately 4.5 cups or 18 – ¼ C servings)
ingredients:
• 2 ½ C rolled oats • 1 C pumpkin seeds, hulled • ½ C unsalted walnuts, chopped • 2 Tbsp canned pumpkin puree (Note: the only ingredient should be pumpkin – this is different than pumpkin pie filling) • 1 Tbsp water • 2 Tbsp avocado oil or vegetable oil • ½ C pure maple syrup, divided into 2- ¼ C servings
• • • • •
2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice ¼ tsp salt Nonstick cooking oil spray

yogurt
directions: 1. Combine all yogurt ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Top with a handful of the maple pumpkin granola, serve immediately and enjoy! Note: This granola can be stored in an airtight container and stored in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week. While this granola is made with gluten free ingredients, I recommend using certified gluten free ingredients if needed . Yogurt can be made with a suitable dairy-free alternative if you need this recipe to be dairy-free and the honey can be swapped for pure maple syrup to make the dairy-free yogurt recipe suitable for a vegan diet. The granola and the yogurt can each be enjoyed on their own, but they complement each other so nicely! This Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait is a perfect way to celebrate autumn’s most famous flavors in a nutritious way! Pumpkin, maple syrup and warm spices, such as cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice, give cozy vibes that are traditionally found in baked goods this time of year. However, while pumpkin bread, muffins, cookies and other fall flavored baked goods are certainly delicious and should be enjoyed, this Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait provides the satisfaction of those fall flavors in a lighter way, while providing ample protein and fiber. It is the perfect, slightly sweet and balanced way to start the day – or to enjoy anytime! Website: alyssalavy.com Instagram: @alyssalavyrd
