hiring real estate agents | serving local residents

There’s something powerful about highlighting the women who are shaping our community, not just through big moments, but through the everyday ways they show up, lead, and care for others. As a mom and a grandmother, I’ve come to appreciate those roles even more, the ones that aren’t always loud, but leave a lasting impact. That spirit is woven throughout this month’s pages, and it’s something we’re proud to celebrate here in Peoria and Glendale.

Inside, you’ll find a mix of inspiration, connection, and a few thoughtful ideas to carry into your own routine. We’re sharing simple ways to support your overall well-being, spotlighting a local woman whose impact speaks for itself, and giving you a reason to gather, slow down, and enjoy time with the people around you. It’s the kind of content that reflects real life, the balance of growth, rest, and community.
What I love most is that none of it feels out of reach. These are stories and ideas rooted right here in our neighborhoods, created by and for the people who make this area what it is. There’s a sense of familiarity in that, but also a reminder that there is always something new to discover, even close to home.
Community continues to be at the heart of everything we do. It’s built through shared experiences, local connections, and the willingness to support one another along the way. This issue is a reflection of that, and of the women who help shape it every day.
I hope you enjoy flipping through these pages, finding a few things that inspire you, and maybe even making a plan or two along the way.
Thank you for being part of this community.

RHONDA CARLSON SHARES HOW LEADERSHIP, CONNECTION, AND INNOVATION ARE SHAPING PEORIA’S BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND LASTING IMPACT.

Rhonda Carlson, President and CEO of the Peoria Chamber of Commerce, has built a career rooted in service, connection, and a deep belief in the power of community. Her journey began in the nonprofit sector in Cleveland, where she was first introduced to organizations doing meaningful, hands-on work to support vulnerable populations. That experience stayed with her, shaping both her perspective and her purpose. As she reflects, “I was inspired by their work… and immediately had the spark lit to do similar work,” a moment that ultimately set the tone for everything that followed.
While continuing to work full-time, Carlson decided to return to school to earn her master’s degree in public administration with a focus on nonprofit management. That commitment quickly paid off. Just days after receiving her diploma, she accepted an executive leadership role with Arizona Disabled Sports, packing
up her family and making the 30-hour move to Arizona. The transition was both personal and professional, placing her in a space that naturally aligned with her passions. “I would say calling me a sports enthusiast is a bit of an understatement,” she shares, noting that the role allowed her “to create more equity in the field by providing adaptive sports and recreation programs.”
After four impactful years, Carlson felt ready to expand her reach beyond a single sector. That next chapter brought her to the Peoria Chamber of Commerce, where she has now spent nearly four years leading with intention and heart. Her work is centered on advocacy, growth, and creating opportunities for local businesses to thrive. “Serving in my role, I feel honored to help play a piece in our growth and value being an advocate for our local, small business community,” she says, a sentiment that reflects both her leadership style and her commitment to Peoria.

“SERVING IN MY ROLE, I FEEL HONORED TO HELP PLAY A PIECE IN OUR GROWTH AND VALUE BEING AN ADVOCATE FOR OUR LOCAL, SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY.”
If there is one word that defines Carlson’s approach, it is connection. It is not just something she speaks about, but something she actively builds into every initiative and interaction. “That’s what we feel a chamber of commerce is all about,” she explains, emphasizing that the connection goes far beyond simple
networking. “Connection is how you build community… It’s creating hundreds of advocates that know, care, and want to support your business.” Through that lens, the Chamber has continued to evolve, offering programs and events designed to bring people together in meaningful ways.
From Launch & Learn events with the City of Peoria and SCORE, to new initiatives like the AI, Cybersecurity & Technology Committee, we continue to equip businesses with tools for growth. Carlson notes, “We believe that every business should leverage the benefits of AI and effective technologies to create operational efficiencies,” reinforcing the Chamber’s commitment to keeping local businesses both competitive and supported.
Even with the rise of digital tools, Carlson believes that real impact still happens face-to-face. “True growth and development is still best accomplished away from a computer screen,” she says, highlighting the importance of in-person connection. That philosophy has helped shape a thriving network of businesses that

are not only focused on their own success but also on the success of the community as a whole.
Peoria itself is experiencing exciting growth, with new developments, industries, and opportunities emerging across the city. Carlson sees this as a pivotal moment. “Peoria is in a really unique position right now,” she explains. “We’re seeing growth across multiple sectors at once, which creates a wide range of opportunities.” Yet what stands out most to her is the community's role in shaping that growth. “I have been extremely impressed with the strong voices of our residents,” she adds, noting how businesses are responding to what the community wants Peoria to become.
At the core of it all is Carlson’s servant-minded approach to leadership. “The gratification we feel from making a positive impact on even one life is what keeps us going every day,” she shares, a reminder that her work is ultimately about people. As Peoria continues to grow and evolve, Carlson remains focused on strengthening connections, supporting businesses, and helping build a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Spring: the days grow longer, weather turns warmer, and the earth’s greenery starts to make its reappearance. During this time, flowers shoot up from the ground in a ballet of colors and movement. Walking outside becomes a cherished moment to breathe the fresh air and immerse yourself in lush surroundings. Being inside your home turns dreary and dull, everything that thrives is now outside, but this can easily be remedied. Why not bring some life inside? Make a spring floral bouquet to lighten up your space. Flowers add color and character to any room that needs a little lift, and our step-by-step guide will inspire you to create something grand.

• Flowers of your choice
• Scissors
• Twine or floral tape
• Ribbon (optional)
• Decorative paper (optional)
• Bouquet sleeve (optional)

Step 1: When creating a beautiful floral arrangement, the first thing to do is decide on a color scheme and prepare the flowers. Have fun deciding what colors you want to play with. Perhaps go pastel for spring or match the hues to other decor items in your house. Once you have picked your flowers, you need to do a little prep work. First, remove extra leaves and damaged petals from the stems. Then make a fresh diagonal cut to the bottom of all the flowers. This allows each bloom to soak up as much water as they need.
Step 2: Now it’s arranging time — think focal and filler. The best way to start the arranging process is by choosing your most interesting or favorite flowers — this will be your focal point. Hold the focal flower(s) upright and add your supporting blooms around it. Make sure to turn the bouquet as you build so that the design is as desired. Once this is complete, add your filler flowers to finalize the look. Filler options include baby’s breath, ivy, fern, eucalyptus and more.
Step 3: Let’s get ready to tie. Once you’ve arranged your bouquet, tie all the stems together using twine or floral tape. If using twine, we recommend securing it in a small bow in case you would like to rearrange at any given time. Floral tape is easy to move on and off for this purpose as well.
Step 4: Add the finishing touches. At this point, you are almost done with your bouquet and all that’s left is embellishments. There are so many ways to further adorn your creation: one way we love is to wrap it in fun decorative paper or put it in a special sleeve made just for flowers. If this idea isn’t for you, we recommend going to Pinterest for inspiration. Just remember, whatever way you choose to decorate your bouquet, you will end with a personalized piece made with love and care.
Dr. Liz Cruz shares preventative tips to support long-term health, balance, and vitality for women daily
ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER
With over 20 years of experience in digestive health, Dr. Liz Cruz brings a preventative, whole-body approach to women’s wellness. Her philosophy centers on simple, consistent habits that support long-term health from the inside out.
“Prevention is where true health begins. Annual screenings give us the opportunity to catch issues early, before they become something more serious,” she explains. Staying current with wellwoman exams, including mammograms, blood pressure checks, cervical cancer screenings, and colonoscopies starting at age 45, is one of the most impactful steps women can take.
Movement is equally essential. “The body was designed to move daily. Even moderate activity like walking can improve digestion, energy, and overall resilience,” says Dr. Cruz. She recommends at least 30 minutes of movement five times per week, paired with daily stretching.

Nutrition plays a powerful role in gut and overall health. “When you fuel your body with real, whole foods, especially greens, you’re giving it what it needs to function and heal,” she shares. A balanced diet with vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains supports both physical and mental well-being.
Rest and stress management cannot be overlooked. “Sleep is when the body repairs itself. Without it, everything else becomes harder,” she notes, encouraging 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night along with stress-reducing practices.
Hydration and lifestyle choices round out her approach. “Water is one of the simplest tools we have. When you’re properly hydrated, your body can do what it’s meant to do,” Dr. Cruz says. She also emphasizes limiting alcohol and avoiding tobacco to protect long-term health.

Dr. Liz Cruz is a dedicated leader in digestive health and overall wellness, bringing more than 20 years of experience as a board-certified gastroenterologist. After years in traditional medicine, she recognized a gap in truly helping patients heal at the root level, which led her to pivot into a more holistic, preventative approach. Alongside her wife, Tina, she built a global wellness platform focused on helping individuals restore gut health, improve daily habits, and take ownership of their well-being. Through programs, education, and resources, Dr. Cruz empowers people to move beyond symptom management and create lasting, sustainable health from within.

A
spa-inspired approach to women’s wellness focused on nervous system support, nourishment, rest, and restoration.
At Eterna Wellness MD, wellness is approached as something far deeper than surface-level self-care. It is not just about treatments or routines, but about creating an environment where women can reset, restore, and reconnect with themselves. In a world that constantly asks women to do more, give more, and be more, true wellness begins by turning inward and supporting the body in ways that feel sustainable and grounding.
As Patrishia Bogan of Eterna Wellness MD shares, “Women are not meant to live in survival mode. When we support the body from the inside out, everything begins to shift physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
Through a spa lens, these foundational practices become rituals, offering both immediate relief and long-term transformation.
The first and most essential focus is supporting the nervous system. Many women operate in a constant state of stress without realizing it, which can impact everything from hormones to digestion and sleep. In a spa setting, this often looks like intentional pauses, calming environments, and treatments designed to bring the body back into balance. Even outside the spa, simple practices like deep breathing, morning sunlight, and gentle movement can signal to the body that it is safe to slow down.
ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER
Equally important is the way women speak to themselves. The internal dialogue running in the background has a powerful influence on overall wellness. “The thoughts you repeat daily become the environment your body lives in,” Bogan explains. From a wellness perspective, this is why so many spa experiences incorporate mindfulness and quiet reflection. Creating space to soften self-criticism and replace it with supportive, compassionate thoughts can have a profound effect on both emotional and physical health.
Sleep is another pillar that cannot be overlooked. At its core, a spa experience is designed to mimic the conditions that promote deep rest: dim lighting, calming sounds, and a sense of safety. These same principles can be carried into everyday life. Prioritizing a consistent bedtime, limiting screen exposure, and creating a wind-down routine allows the body to fully reset. “Sleep is where healing happens,” Bogan says. “It is not optional if you want to feel your best.”

Nourishment also plays a critical role in how women feel day to day. Many women unintentionally disrupt their energy by skipping meals or relying on quick fixes like sugar and caffeine. From a wellness standpoint, the goal is stability. Think of nourishment as another form of self-care, one that supports balanced blood sugar, steady energy, and hormone health. Whole foods, protein, minerals, and hydration create a foundation that allows the body to function with ease rather than stress.

Finally, true wellness requires space for restoration. While discipline has its place, it is not the full picture. Restoration is what brings women back to themselves. Whether it is time spent in stillness, connection, creativity, or nature, these moments act as a reset for both the mind and body. “A well woman is not just productive, she is connected,” Bogan shares. “When you make space for what restores you, you create resilience that carries into every area of your life.”
Through a spa-inspired approach, wellness becomes less about striving and more about supporting. It is found in the small, consistent practices that help women feel grounded, energized, and fully themselves again.

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”
