With Father’s Day around the corner, this issue is also a chance to celebrate the role they play in shaping families and building lasting legacies.

This month, we’re proud to feature brothers-inlaw Jack Curry and Ian O’Connor, two respected voices in the world of sports whose careers have been defined by dedication, storytelling, and a passion for the game. Their connection to each other and their craft makes for a truly compelling story.

We also highlight  Dr. Andrew Nouri, whose commitment to his patients and the local community reflects the kind of care and professionalism that sets him apart. His work is a reminder of the importance of trust and expertise we rely on from doctors.

For those looking to refine their style,  The Shave Bar & Barbershop showcases the value of craftsmanship and attention to detail. It’s more than just a haircut, it’s an experience rooted in tradition and personal care.

Rounding out the issue is  America The Beautiful: Flags & Flagpoles, a business that stands for something greater. Their work honors tradition, patriotism, and pride. These values resonate strongly throughout our community, especially as we approach America's 250th birthday.

As we celebrate the men featured in this issue, I also want to extend a heartfelt Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in and around the Pascack Valley. Your guidance, support, and presence make a lasting impact in ways both big and small.

Thank you, as always, for supporting the local businesses and people who make our community thrive. We hope this issue leaves you feeling inspired and proud of the men who continue to shape the Pascack Valley. ANTHONY

Ask The Appraiser

A DECADES-OLD MYSTERY UNCOVERS A CELEBRATED ARTIST AND SURPRISING VALUE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JON FELZ

In this feature, we hear from Jon Felz, an expert appraiser from RZM Fine Arts & Antiques, who provides valuable insights on evaluating prized possessions. Have something you're curious about having appraised? Reach out to Jon for a chance to have your items featured in a future "Ask the Appraiser" column.

NOTE TO APPRAISER:

After reading your wonderful column for years, I finally got the nerve to write to you about a painting I inherited about 40 years ago. In your profession, are there times when you spend a great deal of time trying to figure out an artist’s signature? That is my dilemma. Not only have I examined it with a magnifying glass, but several family members have tried to identify the artist’s name as well, without success.

I even brought the painting to a local antique dealer. While he offered to purchase it, he was unable to identify the artist. So, as they say, the ball is in your court.

The painting measures 13 by 10 inches. If you are able to read the signature, could you please tell me about the artist and perhaps its value? The day may be approaching when I decide to sell it, and the dealer I spoke with seemed very interested. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thank you,

Chris

APPRAISAL RESPONSE:

I certainly understand your frustration in trying to identify the artist. Art dealers regularly spend a great deal of time deciphering signatures on paintings. However, there are many works of art that can be identified by style alone, sometimes even before the signature is examined. Your painting is one of them.

The work in question was created by the important Danish artist Johann Berthelsen (1883–1972), a self-taught Impressionist painter. He is best known for his poetic depictions of New York City, often set in snowy scenes.

Born in Copenhagen, Berthelsen moved with his mother to Wisconsin at a young age, where he developed an early interest in the arts — including singing, acting and painting. He later relocated to Chicago, where he received a full scholarship to the Chicago Musical College.

“BERTHELSEN’S WORK IS HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER. HIS PAINTINGS OFTEN SELL FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. AN AVERAGE PIECE FROM HIS NEW YORK CITY PERIOD TYPICALLY RANGES BETWEEN $10,000 AND $30,000.”

Much of his early career was spent touring the United States as an opera performer. It was not until around 1910 that he began to seriously pursue painting, encouraged by Norwegian American Impressionist Svend Svendsen.

In 1920, Berthelsen moved to New York City, where he began creating the work for which he is best known. His soft, atmospheric cityscapes often evoke the romantic Impressionist landscapes of 19th-century Paris.

During the Great Depression following the 1929 stock market crash, Berthelsen lost many of his students, and his family was forced to downsize. At that time, a fellow artist encouraged him to work in oils, which proved to be a turning point in his career. His paintings gained popularity, and he went on to sell works to prominent collectors, including William Randolph Hearst, Frank Sinatra and Dinah Shore.

His work remained in demand throughout his life. In the mid-1930s, he also participated in several New Deal WPA art programs. He joined the Salmagundi Club in New York City in 1935 and remained a member until his death.

Having studied his work at the Salmagundi Club, I’ve come to admire his soft hues and expressive brushwork — and have even become a collector myself. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous New York galleries, including the Barbizon-Plaza Galleries and the Jean Bohne Gallery.

Berthelsen continued painting well into his 80s. In 1971, he was struck by a car, which led to declining health and ultimately his death the following year.

As for value, Berthelsen’s work is highly sought after. His paintings often sell for tens of thousands of dollars. An average piece from his New York City period typically ranges between $10,000 and $30,000. Based on the size of your painting and recent auction results, a fair current appraised value would be approximately $8,500.

You may want to consider having the painting insured, as its value is likely to appreciate over time.

And by the way, Chris — you never mentioned what the antique dealer offered you!

THE SHARED DRIVE BEHIND JACK CURRY AND IAN O’CONNOR

TWO PASCACK VALLEY LOCALS, BOUND BY FAMILY AND FUELED BY CRAFT, HAVE SHAPED THE VOICE OF MODERN SPORTS STORYTELLING FROM PRESS BOX TO BESTSELLER LIST.

In a profession defined by deadlines, competition and constant reinvention, few careers endure at the highest level for decades. Fewer still do so with both distinction and consistency. And almost none unfold alongside a family member who understands the grind as intimately as you do.

Yet that is precisely the story of Jack Curry and Ian O’Connor.

To sports fans, their names are synonymous with credibility. Curry, a longtime Yankees reporter turned YES Network studio analyst, has been a steady and trusted presence in baseball coverage for more than three decades. O’Connor, a bestselling author and award-winning columnist for The Athletic, has built a reputation for deeply reported, human-centered storytelling that resonates far beyond the box score.

To Pascack Valley residents, they are something more familiar. They are neighbors, regulars at local spots and part of the fabric of a community they have called home for years.

Jack Curry & Ian O’Connor
“Yet ask either man about success, and the answer sounds remarkably similar. It comes down to preparation. Curiosity. Respect for the story.”
Ian O’Connor & Stylist Jorge Hernandez

And to each other, they are family.

Their connection traces back to the early days of their careers at The Star-Ledger, where both young reporters were learning the rhythms of the job. That professional bond soon became personal when Curry met his future wife, Pamela Orbine, who happened to be college acquaintances with O’Connor. Not long after, O’Connor met Pamela’s sister, Tracey. Two relationships turned into two marriages. Two colleagues became brothers-in-law.

It is a rare dynamic in any field, let alone one as competitive as sports media.

What unites them, beyond family ties, is a shared foundation. Both men grew up in hardworking households where discipline and determination were essential. Both discovered early that storytelling, not just sports, would define their path. And both built careers on a relentless commitment to getting the story right.

They have covered championships, heartbreak, and historic moments. Interviewed icons like Derek Jeter and David Cone, studied legends such as Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali. Written books that landed on The New York Times bestseller list. Earned awards that reflect not just talent, but longevity and trust.

Yet ask either man about success, and the answer sounds remarkably similar. It comes down to preparation. Curiosity. Respect for the story.

And always, the willingness to do a little more than everyone else.

IAN O’CONNOR: TELLING THE STORY BEHIND THE STAR

For Ian O’Connor, the path to becoming one of the most respected voices in sports journalism began with a simple fascination.

“I was drawn to what made champions tick as human beings,” he says.

That curiosity took root early, inspired in part by his older brother, who introduced him to sports and the rituals that come with them. While many fans focused on the action, O’Connor was equally interested in the people behind it. Not just the quarterback or the slugger, but the person inside the uniform.

Growing up, he admired figures like Roger Staubach and Reggie Jackson, athletes who represented excellence in very different ways. Equally influential were the journalists who brought those personalities to life, revealing who they were beyond the spotlight.

That perspective has shaped his entire career.

After graduating from St. Cecilia High School in Englewood and attending Marist University, O’Connor entered a profession he describes as “a rewarding and thrilling grind.” It is a phrase that captures both the excitement and the sacrifice required to succeed at the highest level.

His résumé reflects that commitment. O’Connor has won firstplace honors in 20 national writing contests and authored six consecutive New York Times bestsellers. His work as a columnist has placed him courtside and on the sidelines for some of the most memorable moments in sports history.

O’Connor’s approach to storytelling is deliberate and deeply reported. He seeks out voices that others might overlook, from former coaches to childhood friends, building a fuller picture of the subject.

Rather than relying solely on headline names, he builds narratives through the people who shaped them.

“The high school coach is almost always a reliable source,” he says. “And a way of reaching others in that person’s life.”

By tracking down those voices, O’Connor uncovers details that bring depth, texture and authenticity to his work. It is a process that often reveals something new, even about the most recognizable figures.

He also values traits that are increasingly rare in modern sports.

“Humility,” he says. “With the money involved these days, it’s impressive when someone at that level has perspective and genuinely cares about connecting with the fan.”

Throughout his career, O’Connor has had a front-row seat to unforgettable moments, from dramatic NCAA Tournament buzzer-beaters decades apart to major championship stages. One of the most meaningful came at the 2019 Masters, when Tiger Woods completed a remarkable comeback. Experiencing it alongside his brother made the moment even more significant.

Today, O’Connor continues to build on that legacy. His latest project focuses on the New York Giants’ 2007 and 2011 championship teams, including their Super Bowl victories over Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Having covered those teams firsthand, he brings both authority and insight to the story.

Despite his accomplishments, he remains grounded in the fundamentals.

“Always make the extra phone call,” he advises aspiring journalists. “It’s the surest way to beat your competition.”

JACK CURRY: A LIFETIME AROUND THE GAME

Long before Jack Curry became a familiar face on YES Network broadcasts, he was a kid in Jersey City announcing Wiffle Ball lineups to his friends.

Even then, the path was clear.

“I loved sports, whether I was playing them, writing about them or talking about them,” Curry says.

That passion found direction in seventh grade when he realized his school lacked a newspaper. Instead of accepting it, he helped create one, sparking a lifelong connection to storytelling. By 13, with guidance from his devoted parents and older brother, he knew exactly what he wanted to do.

After graduating from Hudson Catholic High School and Fordham University, Curry began his career at The Star-Ledger covering high school sports. Within a year, he was hired by The New York Times, launching a 22-year run that would place him at the center of one of baseball’s most iconic eras.

He covered the Yankees’ late 1990s dynasty up close, chronicling the rise of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada. Over the course of his career, Curry reported on 18 World Series, worked in more than 40 major league stadiums and traveled extensively, from Japan to the Dominican Republic, capturing the global reach of the game.

In 2010, he transitioned from print to television, joining YES Network as a studio analyst and reporter. The move expanded his audience while maintaining the same thoughtful, measured approach that defined his writing. Along the way, he has earned nine New York Emmy Awards.

Despite the shift to broadcast, Curry, who has written four NY Times best-sellers, considers himself a writer at heart.

“Journalism isn’t about out-screaming everyone else,” he says. “It’s about being factual and taking people inside places they’ve never been.”

His career is filled with unforgettable moments, but one stands out above the rest: the 1996 World Series.

As the Yankees closed in on their first championship since 1978, the energy inside Yankee Stadium was unmistakable. The crowd roared, the press box shook and history unfolded in real time. Even on deadline, Curry paused to take it all in, understanding the magnitude of what he was witnessing.

Ian O’Connor & Jack Curry

That instinct to observe, to capture the emotion behind the moment, remains central to his work.

Curry is also candid about the discipline required to sustain success. Mentors like Dave Anderson and Malcolm Moran of The New York Times reinforced his belief that he could thrive in a demanding industry, shaping both his career and his commitment to mentoring young journalists who now share press boxes with him.

His perspective has also been shaped by meaningful relationships formed along the way, reminding him that some of the most powerful stories exist beyond the field.

For Curry, success is not defined solely by accolades, but by preparation and purpose. He shares a simple acronym with aspiring journalists: PACE. Persistent. Aggressive. Curious. Excellent.

It is advice shaped by experience and reinforced by decades in one of the most competitive media markets in the world.

Today, Curry continues to build on a career that spans print, television and bestselling books. He is currently working on a project centered on the Yankees’ Core Four, whose debut in 1995 helped define a championship era. Having covered their rise firsthand, he brings both authority and insight to the story.

Inside the newly renovated Sal Lauretta showroom

At home in River Vale, he maintains the same discipline that has guided his career. Whether preparing for a broadcast, writing or reflecting on the next story to tell, he approaches each day with intention.

“When I put my head on the pillow at night, I want to know I was prepared,” he says.

A SHARED STANDARD

While their careers have taken different paths, Curry and O’Connor remain connected by a common standard.

They respect the work. They respect the audience. And they respect each other.

Over the years, they have exchanged ideas, offered advice and, at times, competed for the same stories. That competitive edge, rather than creating distance, has strengthened their bond.

That balance reflects the core of their relationship. They are colleagues who understand the demands of the profession, and family members who share life beyond it.

For readers in Pascack Valley, their story is both inspiring and familiar. It is about ambition rooted in community. About careers built not on shortcuts, but on consistency. And about the rare intersection of professional excellence and personal connection.

In an era where headlines often move faster than the stories behind them, Curry and O’Connor remind us why those stories matter.

Because at the heart of every game, every championship, every moment worth remembering, there is always something more to tell.

Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you?

Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction

Inside the expressive, ever-evolving world of artist Kim Schmitt Thomas

A Conversation in Color

Step inside ABSTRACT in Westwood, and you will quickly realize this is not your typical gallery. It is alive with movement, color, conversation and curiosity. At the center of it all is Kim Schmitt Thomas, a lifelong artist whose work feels as much like a dialogue as it does a visual experience.

We sat down with Thomas to talk about her journey, her process and the inspiration behind her vibrant new creative space.

Q: CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS AND SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR WORK AS AN ARTIST?

A: I’ve worked as an artist for the past 30 years, primarily as a large-scale abstract painter.  I’ve been represented by multiple galleries and for the past five years I’ve had a studio at a unique store called hOMe in Hawthorne.  I either sell my work “off the wall” or I create custom pieces that work with my client’s space.  This experience is what I’m now bringing to Westwood with my own gallery/ studio called ABSTRACT.  In addition, I’m combining an old pottery business I once had with my art.  ABSTRACT will always be a work in progress where guests will discover something new with each visit.

Q: WHERE DID YOUR STORY BEGIN, BOTH PERSONALLY AND CREATIVELY?

A: I was born in 1970 in Hell’s Kitchen but raised in River Edge.  My parents were young actors so my early childhood was often spent quietly drawing in theatre wings and dressing rooms.  When I was about 3, my mom (Lee Meredith) played the sketch nurse in the

Broadway production of Neil Simon’s, The Sunshine Boys.  We often ate at Sardi’s after the show where I was fascinated with the walls covered in caricature drawings by Al Hirschfeld, who later drew the poster for the film version of The Sunshine Boys, which included a caricature of my mom.  I used to repeatedly trace and copy the drawing, fascinated by its expression and precise line work, which has stayed with me throughout the years.

Q: WAS THERE A DEFINING MOMENT WHEN YOU REALIZED ART WOULD BECOME YOUR CAREER, NOT JUST A PASSION?

A: No, it was just something I always knew since I was three years old. It wasn’t something I chose to do, it was always something I naturally did.

Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS?

A: Every painting I create is a different conversation I have with the canvas. I never paint what I see in front of me because I find it limiting. I’m more drawn to painting energy and expression with just hints of imagery.

Q: YOUR PIECES OFTEN FEEL ENERGETIC AND LAYERED - WHAT INSPIRES THAT MOVEMENT AND USE OF COLOR?

A: Dance and music, mostly.  I trained as a dancer for 20 years and that movement will always be built into my core.  Also, the flat old-school cartoons and comics that race with action lines have been a big influence since I was a kid.

Puzzle Pieces, private home in River Vale
Kim Schmitt Thomas
Rapture, private home in Franklin Lakes Photo credit, Lori Lazan

Q: WHAT CONTINUES TO EXCITE YOU ABOUT CREATING AFTER SO MANY YEARS IN THE FIELD?

A: The constant evolution. No two paintings are the same, and I love collaborating with clients on commissions. People often bring their own ideas into the process.  Every piece becomes personal for them and for me.

Q: LOOKING BACK, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS AN ARTIST?

A: Having my work featured on the Showtime series  City on a Hill was a big moment, along with being published in  The New York Times, twice. The first gallery to approach me for representation was also a big breakthrough, but opening ABSTRACT, my own gallery, is the most meaningful milestone.

Q: WHAT INSPIRED THIS NEW CHAPTER IN WESTWOOD?

A: It was a gut feeling I could not ignore. Years ago, I had a pottery business and I always wanted to bring that back alongside my painting. Now I have a space where both can exist together.

Q: What do you love most about being part of the Westwood community?

A: The energy, the people and the conversations. Someone might walk in to look at art, but we often connect on something completely unrelated. Everyone has been very welcoming and excited by my work and the uniqueness of ABSTRACT.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ASPIRING ARTISTS?

A: Build relationships, be seen, and do not fear failure. Make mistakes and see where they lead you.

PRECISION, PURPOSE, AND PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION

INSIDE NOURI PLASTIC SURGERY, WHERE CARE, COMMUNICATION, AND CONFIDENCE COME FIRST

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW FEIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Dr. Andrew Nouri

In a field often misunderstood as purely cosmetic, Dr. Andrew Nouri is quietly reshaping the narrative, one patient at a time. As the founder of Nouri Plastic Surgery in Paramus, he brings a thoughtful blend of artistry, technical precision, and human connection to every procedure, creating outcomes that are as functional as they are transformative.

For Dr. Nouri, the path to plastic and reconstructive surgery was never just about medicine. It was about creativity.

“The greatest appeal to the field is its creativity,” he says. “It balances aesthetics and function into perfect synchrony.”

That balance defines his work today. Each procedure is approached not as a

“We as people are far more similar than we think. If we focus on our similarities rather than our differences, the world suddenly becomes more enriched and beautiful, sometimes without even picking up a scalpel.” - Dr. Andrew Nouri

routine case, but as a deeply personal collaboration between doctor and patient. At the core of his philosophy is a simple but powerful principle: no two patients are the same, and no treatment should be either. The goal is never to change who someone is, but to help them feel more like themselves, with natural looking results that enhance confidence rather than define it.

Communication, he explains, is everything.

“Proper eye contact and listening to the patient’s goals are crucial to a life changing outcome,” Dr. Nouri says. “Every surgery is carefully and methodically tailored.”

That level of attentiveness is especially meaningful in a specialty where patients

are often making vulnerable, life changing decisions. From the first consultation through recovery, Dr. Nouri emphasizes consistency, accessibility, and trust. Patients are encouraged to ask questions, revisit concerns, and fully understand their options at every step.

“I ask every single one of my patients if they have any questions repeatedly,” he says. “This ensures no stones are left unturned.”

Patients often walk into their first consultation unsure of what to expect, but quickly find a sense of ease. The environment is designed to feel welcoming, private, and judgment free, allowing for open and honest conversation. Dr. Nouri takes

time to understand not just what a patient wants to change, but why it matters to them, creating a foundation of trust from the very first visit.

While Nouri Plastic Surgery offers a range of breast and body procedures, one area of focus stands out for its profound impact on quality of life: breast reduction surgery. For many women, the procedure is not about appearance, but relief.

“Patients who have breast reduction surgery feel an immediate sense of relief on the night of surgery,” Dr. Nouri says. “I always describe it as putting down a dumbbell you have been carrying for years.”

“The greatest appeal to the field is its creativity. It balances aesthetics and function into perfect synchrony.” - Dr. Andrew Nouri

It is a powerful image, and one that resonates deeply with patients who have spent years dealing with chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain. What many do not realize, he adds, is that these procedures are often medically necessary and may be covered by insurance.

“We make the process completely smooth and palatable for patients,” he explains. “We help them gather the necessary documentation and submit everything for preauthorization.”

For those wondering if they may qualify, Dr. Nouri encourages starting with a simple conversation.

“If you have back, neck, or shoulder pain and you think this is related to your breast size, please call us and let us walk you through the process,” he says.

By guiding patients through what can otherwise feel like a complicated system, his team ensures that no one has to navigate insurance or eligibility alone. It is another way the practice removes barriers and makes life changing care more accessible.

Seeing a patient experience their new body for the first time is what continues to fuel his passion.

“It is inspiring and emotional,” he says. “It makes my job effortless and never feel like work.”

That sense of purpose extends beyond the operating room. For Dr. Nouri, being a trusted resource in Bergen County is both an honor and a responsibility.

“It is a privilege to serve Bergen County and the tristate area,” he says.

His perspective on transformation is also refreshingly grounded. While his work helps patients look and feel their best, he believes confidence is rooted in something deeper.

“We as people are far more similar than we think,” he says. “If we focus on our similarities rather than our differences, the world suddenly becomes more enriched and beautiful, sometimes without even picking up a scalpel.”

It is a philosophy that reflects both humility and heart, and one that defines the experience at Nouri Plastic Surgery. Here, transformation is not just about changing how someone looks. It is about improving how they live, how they feel, and how they move through the world with confidence.

In the end, it is not just about the procedure. It is about helping people move forward with comfort, confidence, and a renewed sense of self.

And for Dr. Nouri, that is what makes the work truly meaningful.

The Shave Bar: Celebrating 10 years of craftsmanship, community, and consistency in the Pascack Valley

ARTICLE BY BROOKE CARTER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW FEIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Owners Evan & Brittney

Long before The Shave Bar became a staple in Hillsdale, it started with a 13-year-old and a pair of clippers.

“I started cutting hair from home,” says owner Evan Vidal. “By 17, I was working in my first shop. By the time I graduated high school, I knew I found my calling.”

That early certainty turned into a relentless pursuit. Evan enrolled in cosmetology school right after graduation, refining his craft while building a loyal clientele. By age 30, the opportunity came to open his own shop, and he took it. What followed was not just the launch of a business, but the beginning of something much deeper.

Now, 10 years later, The Shave Bar stands as one of the Pascack Valley’s most trusted names in men’s grooming.

BUILT ON CONSISTENCY, NOT HYPE

From the beginning, Evan’s vision was clear: consistency over trends

“I wanted to build a shop people could count on,” he says. “Consistent quality, the right atmosphere, and making sure every client felt taken care of.”

That mindset shaped everything, from the service menu to the tone of the space. It was never about becoming the biggest barbershop around. It was about becoming the best at what they do, one client at a time.

And that approach worked.

A decade in, The Shave Bar has grown into a respected brand with a reputation rooted in trust. For Evan, the milestone is both humbling and validating.

“It reminds me of the commitment it took to get here,” he says. “The long days, the risks. But it also shows we built something the right way.”

MORE THAN JUST A HAIRCUT

Step inside The Shave Bar and it is immediately clear this is not just a transactional experience. It is a place where routine meets connection.

Clients are greeted with a welcoming, laid-back energy. TVs at every station stream live sports. Music fills the room. Conversations

flow easily between barbers and clients, often picking up right where they left off weeks before.

“It’s always been about more than just the haircut,” Evan explains. “You get to know your clients, their jobs, their families, what’s going on in their lives.”

That consistency builds something rare: real relationships. Over time, clients do not just return for the service, they return for the familiarity.

WHERE TRADITION MEETS TODAY

There is a noticeable respect for tradition woven into every service at The Shave Bar. Classic techniques form the foundation, from precise scissor work to the art of the hot towel shave, a signature offering that brings a touch of luxury to the everyday routine.

But the shop does not live in the past.

“With a strong foundation and an eye for modern styles, we can tailor any look,” says Evan.

From timeless cuts to today’s trends, the focus remains the same: clean, well-executed grooming that fits the individual. Because trends may come and go, but confidence never goes out of style.

ROOTED IN THE PASCACK VALLEY

Choosing Hillsdale was not accidental. Evan had already spent years working throughout the Pascack Valley, building relationships and understanding the community.

“When I walked into this location, it just felt like home,” he says.

“I wanted to build a shop people could count on. Consistent quality, the right atmosphere, and making sure every client felt taken care of.”
- Evan Vidal

That connection has only deepened over time. The community’s loyalty and support have played a major role in the shop’s success, and it is something Evan does not take lightly.

“We’re honored to be part of this area. I wouldn’t want to own a shop anywhere else.”

A FAMILY EFFORT

Behind the scenes, The Shave Bar is very much a partnership. Evan’s wife, Brittney, brings her own background in cosmetology and plays a key role in shaping the business.

“Her support and knowledge have been instrumental,” he says.

Together, they have built more than a shop. They have created a space where barbers can grow their careers, refine their skills, and build their own loyal followings. Watching that growth, Evan says, is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

THE SIMPLE SECRET TO LOOKING SHARP

After 10 years, Evan’s advice for men looking to elevate their grooming routine is not complicated.

“Keep it simple,” he says. “Find a barber you trust and stay consistent.”

It is about the details, regular cuts, a maintained beard, a clean neckline. Small things done well, over time.

Because in the end, the goal is straightforward.

“A great haircut is a happy customer,” Evan says. “Nothing else matters.”

RAISING MORE Than A FLAG

How one local business is helping Bergen County honor tradition, service, and 250 years of American pride

Tucked inside the historic charm of the Oradell Train Station, America The Beautiful Flags & Flagpoles is more than a retail shop. It is a place where stories of patriotism, family, and legacy come to life just in time for a milestone moment in American history.

With the nation preparing to celebrate its 250th anniversary this July, owner Christopher Macaluso reflects on the meaning behind the stars and stripes and why raising the Flag still matters today.

Q: HOW DID AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL FLAGS & FLAGPOLES BEGIN?

Macaluso:  It really started when I was about 7 years old. I spent summers in Florida with my grandparents, Charles and Assunta, who immigrated from Sicily. My grandfather was incredibly proud to be an American. Every morning at sunrise, we would raise the American Flag together on a flagpole he built himself using plumber’s pipe, a pulley, and even a hand painted eagle on top.

After about a week, he let me take over. He taught me never to let the Flag touch the ground, and every evening at sunset, we would lower it together and fold it properly. I did not fully understand it at the time, but I felt the pride. That feeling stayed with me, and it is what inspired this business.

Q: WHAT MOTIVATES YOU ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE DISPLAY THE AMERICAN FLAG?

Macaluso:  It is the people. Every customer has a story. Some are joyful, some are emotional, and some are deeply personal. We have installed flagpoles for families honoring loved ones, for veterans, and for neighbors supporting someone serving overseas.

Owner Christopher Macaluso

There are moments when we raise a Flag on a new flagpole for the first time, and both the customer and I get goosebumps. We always say, “We LOVE What We Do,” and we truly mean it.

Q: WHAT DOES THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED STATES MEAN TO YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?

Macaluso:  This is a once in a lifetime celebration. We started seeing demand as early as January this year, which is unusual for us. Homeowners, businesses, and municipalities are all looking for ways to participate.

America The Beautiful: Flags & Flagpoles Team

There is a real sense of pride and excitement. My advice is simple. If you are thinking about doing something to celebrate, do not wait. And one important note. We only sell products made in America, and they are going quickly.  Be aware that many Flags sold as Made In America are NOT.  Look for the FMAA tag!  We are proud member of both  FMAA &  NIFDA which a big part of what these organizations do is make certain that an American Flag is Made In America!

Q: WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT WHEN THEY VISIT YOUR SHOP?

Macaluso:  Our retail shop inside the train station is like stepping back in time. It may be small, but it is packed with inventory. We carry American flags of all sizes, 250th anniversary flags, military and first responder flags, custom flags & banners, decorative bunting, and memorial cases. If we do not have something, we will get it for you. We also offer local delivery, which makes things easier for our customers.

Q: WHAT SERVICES DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN?

Macaluso:  Our primary focus in addition to helping every home nearby to fly and American Flag outside their home or business is flagpole installation, repair, and maintenance. We keep the process simple. We will come to your home or business, help you choose the right location, and walk you through options like fiberglass versus aluminum, height, and flag size.

We also offer landscape lighting through our sister company, PanaLuna Design Group, including lighting designed to highlight your home, business and of course your flagpole!

Q: CAN YOU SHARE A PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE FROM YOUR WORK?

Macaluso:  One that stands out was at a VFW hall in Paramus. A flagpole had been vandalized and cut down, with the American flag and a POW MIA flag still attached. Seeing the look of shock and disappointment from the older veterans there was heartbreaking.

We knew we had to do more than just clean it up. We donated a new flagpole. The community came together, including police and local supporters, to rebuild the space with benches, landscaping, and more.

At the dedication ceremony, the gratitude from those veterans was something I will never forget. That is what this is all about.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building.
