The Best of Summer
August is one of my favorite months of the year. Summer is still in full swing, families are making memories together, and the Pascack Valley is filled with the energy that comes from spending time with the people and pets we love most. That is why our annual Kids & Pets issue is always such a special one.
This month, we are proud to feature The Bunny Hive of Bergen County, a unique and welcoming space designed to nurture creativity, confidence, and connection for young children and their families. Their mission is a wonderful reminder that some of the most meaningful learning experiences happen through play, exploration, and community.
We also shine a spotlight on Cat Crew Rescue, an organization doing incredible work to give cats and kittens a second chance. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment to animal welfare have helped countless pets find loving homes throughout our area. Stories like theirs remind us of the difference a caring community can make.
Mental health and wellness are equally important, especially for children and families navigating today’s fast paced world. That is why we are excited to feature Serenity Psychiatry and Wellness, LLC, a practice focused on providing thoughtful, compassionate care and support to those who need it most.
Rounding out this issue is Our Lady of Mercy Academy, a school dedicated to helping young children grow academically, spiritually, and personally. Their commitment to developing future leaders continues to make a lasting impact on students and families throughout the Pascack Valley and beyond.
Whether you are spending these final weeks of summer at the pool, on vacation, attending local events, or simply enjoying time at home with family and pets, I hope this issue inspires you to appreciate the relationships and experiences that matter most.
As always, thank you for supporting the local businesses, schools, and organizations that help make the Pascack Valley such a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family.
Wishing you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable end to the summer season.

LITTLE MOMENTS, Big CONNECTIONS
The Bunny Hive Bergen creates a space where families grow together
For many parents, the early years of raising children are filled with joy, wonder and unforgettable milestones. They can also be isolating.
Between sleepless nights, busy schedules and family members who may live hours away, many mothers and fathers find themselves navigating parenthood without the village previous generations often relied on. That reality is exactly what inspired Bergen County resident Barbara Brown to bring The Bunny Hive Bergen to the Pascack Valley.
Nestled along Rivervale Road, The Bunny Hive is much more than a children's activity center. It is a gathering place, a support system and, for many local families, a second home.
Brown, a graduate of Columbia University who holds a master's degree in music education from Montclair State University, spent years teaching in public school before deciding to take a leap of faith and pursue a different dream.
"I felt that young parents in this area were desperately seeking opportunities to create a village of support and warmth," Brown says.
As a mother herself, she understood firsthand how challenging it can be to raise children while feeling disconnected from family support systems.
"My true passion is community building," she says. "I wanted to fuse my knowledge of education with community facilitation."
That vision became The Bunny Hive Bergen, an elevated social club for children and their caregivers designed to support families from pregnancy through the preschool years.
Walking into the studio, visitors immediately notice something different. There are no flashing lights or overstimulating distractions. Instead, the space feels calm, welcoming and thoughtfully curated. Children are encouraged to explore while caregivers can enjoy a cup of coffee, connect with friends or simply take a deep breath.
"We are a clean, beautiful space truly designed to feel like another home," Brown says.
But the heart of The Bunny Hive isn't found in the decor. It's found in the relationships being built every day.
For Brown, community means much more than gathering people in the same room.
"Community means someone who will hand you a diaper when you've forgotten yours," she says. "A mother willing to let your little one pick from her kid's snacks. A friend you can call when you've lost your cool and raised your voice for the first time."
Those small moments of support can make an enormous difference, particularly for new parents.
One of The Bunny Hive's most distinctive offerings is its Due Date Club, a 12-week program designed for expecting mothers. The program helps women build friendships, access expert guidance and establish support systems before their babies arrive.
"Becoming a mother happens way before giving birth," Brown says. "Having a village in place ahead of baby arrival is paramount to the well-being and recovery of the mother."
The program has resonated deeply with local families because it addresses a growing challenge many parents face: loneliness.
“Community means someone who will hand you a diaper when you’ve forgotten yours. A mother willing to let your little one pick from her kid’s snacks. A friend you can call when you’ve lost your cool and raised your voice for the first time.”
- Barbara Brown
Owner, Barbara Brown
"Building community is paramount to the well-being of new and expectant parents," Brown says. "Our biggest enemy is loneliness."
The Bunny Hive also offers a Parenting Playbook Program that helps caregivers build confidence and navigate the challenges of raising young children. Combined with social events, workshops and community gatherings, the programs create opportunities for friendships that often extend far beyond the studio walls.
While caregiver support is central to the mission, children remain at the heart of everything The Bunny Hive does.
The studio offers a wide variety of classes, including music, art, culinary experiences, ballet, Spanish instruction and preschool preparation. Each program is taught by professionals with expertise in early childhood development.
Brown is especially proud of the music program, which she teaches herself.
"As a former music teacher, I take great pride in knowing all of our music classes are taught with joy," she says.
The focus extends beyond entertainment. Every class is designed to support developmental milestones while strengthening the bond between children and caregivers. Through sensory play, music, movement and hands-on exploration, children build neurological connections, improve body awareness and develop critical social skills.
At the same time, parents are encouraged to be fully present.
"Our classes focus heavily on creating moments of connection between the little one and the caretaker," Brown says. "We have everything else set in the studio so that your only objective is to be present in the moment and enjoy your little."
For many families, that opportunity to slow down is invaluable.
Parents often arrive carrying the weight of endless to-do lists, household responsibilities and the pressures that come with raising young children. The Bunny Hive seeks to lift some of that burden by creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.
"We value our nannies as much as our parents," Brown says. "We love our grandparents as much as we love the littles. This is a place where everyone is encouraged to feel at home."
Perhaps the clearest measure of The Bunny Hive's impact comes from the stories Brown hears from members.
Of all the milestones she has witnessed, one moment stands above the rest.
“We value our nannies as much as our parents, we love our grandparents as much as we love the littles. This is a place where everyone is encouraged to feel at home.”
- Barbara Brown
"The most rewarding moment by far has been when a member, with tears in her eyes, told me the studio saved her," Brown says.
For Brown, that conversation reinforced the purpose behind every class, every playdate and every community event.
At a time when parenting can often feel overwhelming, The Bunny Hive is proving that families do not have to navigate the journey alone.
The friendships formed there may begin over a music class, a shared latte or a toddler's first steps, but they often grow into something much bigger.
They become the village.
And for many Pascack Valley families, that village is exactly what they've been searching for.

Have something you're curious about having appraised? Reach out to Jon for a chance to have your items featured in a future "Ask the Appraiser" column.
NOTE TO APPRAISER:
I recently purchased this large decorative planter at a local garage sale and was hoping you could provide some information about it, as well as an estimate of its value.
The piece was tucked beneath a table and covered with blankets when I first spotted it. When I asked whether it was for sale, I was told it was, and I offered $25. My offer was accepted. At the time, I thought it would make the perfect place to hold my mail.
I was later told the planter had belonged to the homeowner, who had recently passed away. The piece measures approximately 15 inches tall and 14 inches wide. As a regular reader of your column, I know condition plays a significant role in determining value. I have carefully inspected it and can find no signs of damage.
I attempted to research it on my own but was unable to find any information. If I sent too many photographs, I apologize. I simply wanted to provide enough detail to help with the identification.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
APPRAISAL RESPONSE:
Congratulations. You are now the owner of what may be the most expensive mail holder in town.
The item you purchased at that garage sale is not a ceramic planter at all. It is a Fine Gilt-Bronze Mounted Cloisonné and Marquetry Jardinière, produced in Paris around 1880 by the renowned artisan Ferdinand Duvinage (1820–1876).
Your jardinière is an exceptional example of the refined and exotic decorative arts that flourished in late 19th-century Paris. It combines Duvinage's innovative marquetry techniques with richly colored cloisonné-style inlays and finely cast gilt-bronze mounts, creating a piece that is both visually striking and historically significant.
The object was produced by Maison Alphonse Giroux, the celebrated French luxury furnishings and decorative arts firm founded in 1799. Ferdinand Duvinage assumed control of the company in 1867 and became known for creating sophisticated works inspired by the growing popularity of Japonisme, the European fascination with Japanese art and design.
The distinctive marquetry technique seen on your jardinière was patented by Duvinage and likely showcased at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1878. Similar examples have appeared at major antique exhibitions and auctions, including a comparable piece that sold at the Miami Beach Antique Show earlier this year.
Duvinage's reputation as one of France's foremost decorative artists was firmly established when he received a silver medal at
“IT COMBINES DUVINAGE’S INNOVATIVE MARQUETRY TECHNIQUES WITH RICHLY COLORED CLOISONNÉ-STYLE INLAYS AND FINELY CAST GILT-BRONZE MOUNTS, CREATING A PIECE THAT IS BOTH VISUALLY STRIKING AND HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT.”
the Exposition Universelle of 1867 for his groundbreaking work in this style.
Now for the part you've been waiting for.
Your $25 garage sale purchase carries a current market value of approximately $5,000.
That's quite a return on investment and proof that remarkable treasures can still be found in the most unexpected places. Given its quality, rarity and excellent condition, I would strongly recommend consulting a reputable high-end auction house in New York City should you ever decide to sell it.
And one final piece of advice: you may want to keep the story of what you paid for it to yourself.

Their
MORE THAN A Rescue
How Cat Crew Rescue is transforming compassion into action for cats, families, and the Pascack Valley community
ARTICLE BY JULIAN CREST
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAT CREW RESCUE

Hillsdale
When a call came in about an injured cat lying along Kinderkamack Road in Hillsdale on an early May morning, the situation appeared hopeless. The cat had been left on the roadside, injured, frightened, and feral. A passerby who stopped to help feared the worst and quickly reached out for assistance.
What followed became one of the many stories that continue to define Cat Crew Rescue Inc.
The injured cat was rushed to emergency veterinary care, where euthanasia was initially recommended. Not because the injuries alone made recovery impossible, but because the animal was considered unmanageable.
Sophia Sembos refused to accept that outcome.
She requested that the cat be treated and made a promise that she would take responsibility for whatever came next. That decision marked the beginning of a long recovery and an even longer journey toward trust.
Through time, patience, and consistent care, the cat slowly healed. Once labeled feral and unadoptable, he eventually learned to trust human touch. He was later named Hillsdale, a tribute to the community where he was found. Today, he lives in a loving home with a local couple and continues to thrive years after his injury.
Stories like this are not rare within Cat Crew Rescue. They are the foundation of it.
Founded in 2018 in Oradell, Cat Crew Rescue Inc began as a response to what Sophia Sembos saw as a growing gap in animal welfare services across Bergen County. After years of volunteering with another rescue organization, she recognized an increasing need for accessible, compassionate, and community-centered care for cats in need.
What started as a personal commitment has grown into a foster-based nonprofit with more than 100,000 social media followers and a reach that extends far beyond northern New Jersey. Today, the organization receives requests for help from across the country, all rooted in the same urgent need: a safe place for cats with nowhere else to go.
From the beginning, Sembos brought a lifetime of compassion to her work. One of her earliest childhood memories involves returning a lost cat to its family at
just four years old. That instinct to help animals never faded. As an attorney specializing in mental health and elder law, she spent her professional career advocating for populations often overlooked. That same sense of advocacy now defines Cat Crew Rescue.
The organization was built on a simple but powerful belief. Helping cats and helping people are not separate missions. They are deeply connected.
In Bergen County, where stray and feral cat populations continue to rise, Cat Crew Rescue has become a critical resource. With veterinary costs increasing and public resources stretched thin, many cat owners and caregivers struggle to find affordable care. The organization responds with free and low cost spay and neuter services and strong support for Trap Neuter Return programs, widely recognized as the most humane and effective approach to managing feral cat populations.
Beyond population control, Cat Crew Rescue focuses on creating stability. Each intervention is designed not only to help a single animal but to improve conditions for entire communities of cats and the people who care for them.
At the heart of the organization is a foster based model that relies entirely on volunteers. Every cat is placed in a home environment where healing, socialization, and trust can develop naturally. That structure has allowed Cat Crew Rescue to provide individualized care while maintaining a deeply personal connection to every animal it saves.
Among its most meaningful initiatives is the Senior Cats for Senior Citizens program, which pairs older cats with senior residents in need of companionship.
One such story involved a gentle cat named Brie, who was taken in after her owner passed away. She was later placed with an elderly woman whose family had been searching for a way to ease her loneliness.
Brie quickly became a constant presence in the woman’s life. She offered companionship, routine, and quiet comfort during a period of declining health. The bond between them grew so strong that when the woman passed away, her family described Brie as the love of her life.
These moments reflect what Cat Crew Rescue strives to create. Not just adoptions, but meaningful relationships that improve lives on both ends.
The organization also works closely with local schools, libraries, scout troops, and community groups throughout the Pascack Valley and surrounding areas. Educational programs introduce children to responsible pet care and encourage early lessons in empathy, responsibility, and community service. For many children, these encounters become their first understanding of how individual actions can make a real difference in the lives of animals.
Despite its growth and impact, Cat Crew Rescue continues to face one of its greatest challenges: limited space. As a foster only organization, its capacity is determined entirely by the number of available foster homes. Every day, new requests for help arrive, often exceeding what the organization can safely accommodate.
This limitation has inspired a long term vision for expansion. Plans are underway to develop a permanent facility in Bergen County that would allow Cat Crew Rescue to increase its capacity for rescues, adoptions, and veterinary services. The proposed space would also
include a community food pantry for cats, helping families who struggle to provide basic care for their pets.
The organization’s philosophy is rooted in a simple idea. These are not just individual animals belonging to separate households. They are part of a shared community responsibility.
Cat Crew Rescue also continues to grow its fundraising efforts, including its first annual Tricky Tray event scheduled for November 11, 2026, at Seasons Catering in Washington Township. The evening will feature themed baskets, a 50/50 raffle, and community engagement in support of expanding rescue services and building a future facility dedicated to feline care.
In eight years, Cat Crew Rescue has helped more than 2,000 cats through rescue, adoption, and long term community care. Behind each number is a story of survival, connection, and second chances.
What began with one person’s decision to act has become a movement built on compassion, volunteers, and the belief that every life matters. In communities across Bergen County, that belief continues to grow one cat, one family, and one act of kindness at a time.

A PLACE TO BE HEARD
Serenity Psychiatry and Wellness is helping Pascack Valley families navigate childhood challenges with compassion and understanding
ARTICLE BY BROOKE CARTER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY
CHARISSA H. YONG PHOTOGRAPHY
For many parents, one of the hardest moments is realizing their child may be struggling.
Maybe it's anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere. Maybe it's difficulty focusing in school, changes in behavior, growing emotional challenges, or a sense that something just
Founder Christine Lisa, PMHNP-BC
“I wanted to create a space where people feel genuinely heard, valued and involved in their healing journey.” - Christine Lisa
doesn't seem right. Parents want to help, but knowing where to turn can feel overwhelming.
That is exactly why Christine Lisa created Serenity Psychiatry and Wellness.
Located in nearby Park Ridge, the practice has become a trusted resource for families throughout the Pascack Valley seeking compassionate mental health care in a welcoming environment. As a Board Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and mother of three, Christine understands both the professional and personal side of supporting children through life's challenges.
"I wanted to create a space where people feel genuinely heard, valued and involved in their healing journey," she says.
That philosophy grew from Christine's own experiences in healthcare. Before entering psychiatry, she spent more than eight years working as a registered nurse in oncology and surgical trauma intensive care units. During
that time, she witnessed the emotional impact serious illness can have on patients and their families.
The experience became deeply personal when Christine lost her mother to ovarian cancer in 2010.
"I saw how my own family struggled during that time in different ways," she says. "I realized none of us are immune to mental health challenges."
That realization helped shape a career dedicated to helping others navigate difficult seasons of life.
Since opening Serenity Psychiatry and Wellness in 2023, Christine has built a growing team that shares her mission of providing the kind of care they would want for their own families. Today, the practice includes four Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, a life coach and dedicated support staff, all focused on helping patients feel supported every step of the way.
While Serenity serves adults, a significant part of the practice centers on children, teens and families.
The Serenity Psychiatry and Wellness Team
Christine says many of the concerns she sees today are challenges familiar to parents throughout the Pascack Valley.
Technology, social pressures, academic expectations and an increasingly fast-paced world are contributing to rising levels of anxiety, depression and attention difficulties among young people.
"As a parent, I understand many of the challenges families are facing," she says. "Children are exposed to so much information today, and it can be difficult for them to process everything."
One area Christine is particularly passionate about is helping families better understand ADHD. She believes education is one of the most powerful tools parents can have and hopes to continue expanding community outreach efforts focused on providing accurate information for families, teachers and school administrators.
But before treatment plans, diagnoses or medications are discussed, Christine believes something even more important has to happen first.
Listening.
"The biggest thing in mental health is listening," she says. "What are patients telling you? What are their goals? They should be involved in their treatment plan."
That patient-centered approach helps create trust, especially for children who may be nervous about their first visit.
To make the experience more comfortable, Serenity includes a dedicated children's play area filled with sensory toys, books, magnetic tiles, kinetic sand and fidget tools. Young patients even receive a self-care bag after their first visit.
The goal is simple: make children feel safe.
Many families arrive feeling uncertain about seeking mental health support, particularly when medication may be part of the conversation. Christine understands those concerns and works closely with parents to ensure they feel informed and empowered throughout the process.
"Seeking help can feel scary," she says. "We take the time to educate families, answer questions and make sure everyone feels comfortable."
She also encourages parents to pay attention to changes in behavior that may signal a child needs additional support. Increased isolation, declining grades, withdrawing from friends and family, or noticeable emotional shifts can all be signs that something deeper may be happening.
At home, Christine believes some of the most meaningful support comes from simply slowing down and reconnecting.
“When someone improves their mental health, it creates a ripple effect. It impacts their family, their relationships, school, work and every part of their life.” - Christine Lisa
She encourages parents to spend intentional one-on-one time with their children, talking about their interests, fears and worries, while setting aside distractions and devices.
"Get to know your child on a personal level," she says. "Those connections matter."
As someone who lives and works in Bergen County, serving local families is especially meaningful to Christine. She understands the unique pressures and opportunities that come with raising children in the Pascack Valley and values being part of the same community her patients call home. Ultimately, her goal extends far beyond the walls of her practice.
"When someone improves their mental health, it creates a ripple effect," she says. "It impacts their family, their relationships, school, work and every part of their life."
For the families who walk through Serenity's doors, that ripple often begins with something many people need but don't always find: a place where they feel heard.
And sometimes, that's where healing starts.

Where Saints Begin
FOR 71 YEARS, OLMA HAS SHAPED CONFIDENT LEARNERS,
COMPASSIONATE LEADERS AND LIFELONG COMMUNITY

Our Lady of Mercy Academy
In a world that often feels increasingly fast-paced and disconnected, there is something remarkable about a place where children are known by name, families become lifelong friends, and generations continue returning decade after decade.
For 71 years, Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Park Ridge has been that place.
Long before it became one of Bergen County's most respected schools, OLMA began with humble roots. In the early 1950s, classes were held wherever space could be found, including a garage behind the sisters' convent, the convent basement and even the sisters' living room. As enrollment grew, so did the dream. In September 1955, that dream found a permanent home when Our Lady of Mercy School officially opened in the building it still occupies today.
More than seven decades later, the mission remains remarkably similar: educate the whole child while nurturing faith, character and a lifelong love of learning.
"Celebrating 71 years is a testament to OLMA's deep roots and enduring impact in Park Ridge," says Principal Theresa Cabrera. "We aren't just a school. We are a multi-generational pillar of the community."
That sense of legacy is visible throughout the hallways. Parents who once sat in OLMA classrooms now walk their own children through the front doors each morning. Some families can trace their connection back three generations.
For Principal Cabrera, who joined OLMA in 2023 after more than two decades in Catholic education, those family stories speak volumes about the school's impact.
"This multi-generational loyalty is the ultimate testament to the school's influence," she says. "The values, academic foundation and sense of community families experienced years ago are things they consider precious enough to pass down."
While tradition remains central to OLMA's identity, the academy is equally focused on preparing students for the future.
The school recently unveiled a state-of-the-art science laboratory designed to bring learning to life for students from Pre-K through eighth grade. Equipped with authentic scientific tools and powered by the hands-on LabLearner
curriculum, the space transforms science from something students read about into something they actively experience.
Instead of memorizing concepts from a textbook, students step into the role of scientists, conducting experiments, analyzing data and exploring STEM concepts through hands-on discovery. The curriculum revisits core scientific principles year after year with increasing complexity, allowing students to build confidence and deepen their understanding over time.
The investment reflects OLMA's belief that modern innovation and timeless values can thrive side by side.
"We aren't just preparing students to be successful professionals," Principal Cabrera says. "We are preparing them to be ethical, compassionate leaders."
That philosophy helps explain why OLMA has earned national recognition for academic excellence. The academy received National Blue Ribbon School honors in 2008 and again in 2018, placing it among a select group of schools to earn the prestigious distinction twice.
Yet ask school leaders what makes them proudest, and the conversation quickly moves beyond test scores and awards.
At OLMA, success is measured just as much by kindness, integrity and service as it is by academic achievement.
Faith is woven into everyday life, guiding students to think critically while also considering how their actions impact others. Whether they are solving math problems, conducting science experiments or discussing literature, students are encouraged to approach learning through a lens of compassion and character.
"The world has no shortage of smart and talented people," Principal Cabrera says. "But OLMA students are something more."
That commitment to character is strengthened by the academy's close relationship with its parish community, a connection that sets OLMA apart.
Father Vincent is a familiar presence throughout the building, teaching seventh-grade religion, reading to younger students and building relationships with children across grade levels. Deacon Andy regularly stops by to greet students and remind them they are "OLMA Saints."
“Celebrating 71 years is a testament to OLMA’s deep roots and enduring impact in Park Ridge. We aren’t just a school. We are a multi-generational pillar of the community.” - Principal Cabrera
“We aren’t just preparing students to be successful professionals, we are preparing them to be ethical, compassionate leaders.” - Principal Cabrera
8th Grade Students
Each month, students attend School Sunday Mass in uniform, where a different grade is recognized and celebrated by the parish community. These moments reinforce the feeling that every child belongs to something larger than themselves.
For many families, that sense of belonging is one of the school's greatest strengths. New students are welcomed with buddy programs during shadow visits. Families are invited to participate in school events, activities and traditions that create connections beyond the classroom. Diversity is celebrated, bringing together different perspectives and experiences that enrich the educational environment.
Most importantly, students never feel like just another name on a roster.
"Every child is recognized as an individual with unique, God-given gifts," Principal Cabrera says.
Perhaps that's why so many graduates continue returning long after they leave. Former students come back to tutor younger children, assist with theater productions, volunteer at events and serve as role models for the next generation.
It is a powerful reflection of what OLMA has built over the past seven decades: not simply a school, but a community.
As the academy looks ahead, there is excitement surrounding new STEM initiatives, continued academic innovation and a growing school family. Yet the heart of OLMA remains unchanged from the values that guided those first students learning in a convent garage more than 70 years ago.
For families searching for a place where children can thrive academically while also growing in faith, confidence and character, OLMA offers something increasingly rare: a school where education extends far beyond the classroom and where community lasts a lifetime.
Because at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, students aren't simply preparing for the future. They are becoming the people who will help shape it.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY
ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE
The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor.
Quality nut butters make all the difference. Think creamy almond butter, rich cashew spread, or that perfectly salted natural peanut butter from the farmer’s market. These simple swaps instantly elevate your sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary.

TRANSFORM YOUR HUMBLE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH FROM LUNCH BOX BASIC TO GOURMET GREATNESS
COMBOS TO Try:
The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread
The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices
The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thick-cut bread
The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread
The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread
The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread
The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat
The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning
PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS
Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible.
Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.
THE BOTTOM LINE
An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.
