This month, we have the special opportunity to celebrate the incredible women who light up our lives! Sure, Mother's Day is around the corner, but let's not forget about all the amazing mother figures who've left an unforgettable mark on us. From family members to teachers, friends, and neighbors, they're the unsung heroes who make our community shine.

Our wives, mothers, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives, and it is crucial to cherish them. Personally, I would like to recognize my wife Lucille who is always there for me. I am also fortunate to have two mothers in my life. My biological mom, who has been my rock since I was born, and my new mom by marriage, who supports and cares for me like her own son. I am lucky to have these ladies in my life.

While it's always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize women-owned businesses in our communities. These ladies are the movers, the shakers, the builders, and the makers. They're the backbone of our community, and their attention to detail and silent service make our world a more beautiful place.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 26.2 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic and reconstructive procedures were performed in the United States in 2022, and a 19% increase in cosmetic surgery procedures since 2019.

No matter what your thoughts are on plastic surgery, we all can agree that cosmetic treatments that were once best-kept secrets are now accepted and even embraced. Plastic surgery has gone mainstream, and many people—both women and men—are interested in incorporating procedures into their beauty routines.

Dr. Ran Rubenstein had dreams of becoming a doctor to help people—but never considered plastic surgery an outlet for that type of service. "I knew I wanted to go into medicine, but I also had a lifelong interest in art and nature. Growing up, I enjoyed painting and sculpting and was always interested in the world's natural beauty."

Although he enjoyed every rotation throughout medical school, Dr. Ran was especially drawn to otolaryngology, a medical specialty focused on the ears, nose, and throat, for which he became board-certified. As he became more exposed to the subspecialty of plastic surgery, he realized that he had found the perfect

practice that would combine his love for art with his acumen for science and medicine. He soon became board-certified in plastic surgery as well.

These two specialties provide a unique combination of medical and anatomical knowledge complemented by artistry and an appreciation for natural beauty, setting Dr. Ran apart from many other specialists. He is now one of the top double board-certified facial plastic surgeons in New York and New Jersey and has recently opened an office in Montvale.

"Plastic surgery fulfills my artistic side," says Dr. Ran. "Each face is something new and different—a unique, fresh palette. I truly enjoy bringing out the inner beauty of my patients."

As an active member of New York Presbyterian Hospital, he spent over 15 years educating future surgeons as an assistant clinical professor. He is also a sought-after national clinical trainer for non-surgical aesthetic treatments. "I take education very seriously," says Dr. Ran, "it's a way I feel I can give back. Our staff is also highly trained. They are knowledgeable about all the procedures and adept at assessing patients. They are a big part of the success of our practice."

Patient education is also an essential aspect of the practice. Patients often cannot articulate what they want, complaining that they look tired or older and assuming that they need a lift or fillers; however, sometimes Dr. Ran needs to direct them to consider the bigger picture—a natural look that comes from beautifully balanced features. Proper symmetry complements the overall face shape and ensures facial features work harmoniously. Patients bring in photos of themselves from the past 20 years, and the staff uses state-of-the-art 3D photography, which morphs to show what they would look like with various treatments.

Kim has been there since the studio’s inception in 2016. “I was the first instructor hired by the original owner, so I’ve been here since the beginning,” she says. “Pure Barre originated with a classic barre class which was enhanced with light weights and resistance bands to increase and lengthen the muscles, but it’s come a long way since then.”

Owners Natasha and Asgar Ali didn’t bat an eye when they considered new career directions and decided to open up a new business together. Natasha was formerly a television news producer, and her husband, Asgar, spent almost 20 years in finance. Business ownership has always run in the family.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START A MOBILE BAR? WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW DID IT PROVIDE A FOUNDATION FOR STARTING THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS?

When an event is held in your home as opposed to a venue, it's often more personal and cost-effective. With more events being held at home, I knew there was an untapped niche in our area for a mobile bar company that focused on quality service and locally inspired menus.

My husband, Matt, and I have a shared history in hospitality and event management, spanning more than 20 years combined. Today, I'm the logistics and décor brain for Born to Rum, and my husband's expertise keeps my mobile bar running like a well-oiled machine with friendly, professional service.

HOW DID YOU GET THIS INNOVATIVE IDEA?

IT'S UNIQUE AND SEEMS TO SUIT MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF EVENTS!

In 2021, I coordinated a few "micro-weddings" due to Covid19, where I brought in every vendor imaginable to transform blank canvas backyards into dream receptions – including bar service. I learned the mobile bartending model first-hand and then researched the horse trailer concept rigorously. I created the Born to Rum brand within the following year.

I spent months scouring the internet for horse trailers. I had to be thoughtful with my purchase – this would serve as my business on wheels in lieu of having a traditional, brick-and-mortar bar. I eventually found "Rosalita" right here in New Jersey –only 30 minutes away, down the Parkway. I bought her sight unseen and kicked off her renovation the very next day.

IF A CLIENT DOESN'T HAVE ROOM FOR THE TRAILER, WHAT ARE THE OTHER OPTIONS FOR SERVICE?

In addition to Rosalita, we also have "Jersey Girl," a handcrafted, white oak bar that includes our white tassel umbrella and your choice of neon sign. Over the last year, this alternative option has become a great addition to indoor holiday events, lavish poolside parties, retail "sip and shop" events, and more.

WHAT TYPE OF EVENTS DO YOU ACCOMMODATE?

We offer bar service, whether it be cocktails or mocktails, for any occasion you can think of – spanning from corporate events and formal fundraisers to milestone birthdays and bridal/baby showers.

DID YOU HAVE ANY PARTICULAR CHALLENGES IN GETTING YOUR BUSINESS OFF THE GROUND?

Like most small business owners, imposter syndrome was an early challenge to overcome. Will this investment deliver profit? Am I crazy for doing this? Thanks to the support of my girlfriends, I built the confidence to stick to the plan and see the idea through.

The Black Poster

Project

Dee Gillen created the Black Poster Project after losing her son, Scott, to an overdose. While preparing for an overdose awareness event in 2019, she felt it would be an impactful visual to have posters of lost loved ones displayed behind the event speakers.

What began with 50 awareness posters is now up to nearly 700. Each poster that enters the display is made at the request of the grieving family at no cost to them. The posters are collectively used in a moving exhibit that travels throughout New Jersey and New York to put a face on the disease of addiction— telling stories and sharing photos funnels grief into helping others.

A message from Dee Gillen on their website states, “The purpose of this project is not to make you sad. It is to help you understand what addiction is, how it happened to our family, how it can happen to you or your family, what to look for, and where to get help. At each event, we come with arms wide open to answer anything you may want to ask. We are grieving parents, family members, friends, and people in recovery, and we are here to talk or listen.

Yes, it is a very emotional experience.

But…if you have the opportunity to attend a Silent Memorial, I promise you will leave with more than you came with.”

This powerful project was recently displayed at Ramapo College in Mahwah.

Dr. Carol Chu-Peralta chose a profession in psychology because she has a passion for helping others. The Founder, Clinical Director, and Psychologist of Center for Resiliency watched her parents emigrate to a new country, settle down, and raise their children while working overtime regularly— which profoundly impacted her.

“My very first case I was ever assigned was a very young child who had survived several forms of trauma. He was a vibrant little one, curious and as smart as they come! The English language and psychotherapy were foreign to him, but he learned to trust me enough to take him on a journey of healing. I speak Spanish (thanks, Mom and Dad!), so I was able to conduct his therapy sessions in his native language.”

Dr. Carol became fascinated with the psychological aspect of immigration and its intersection with trauma and began to dive into research on the subject. Soon, she started presenting lectures at various schools and organizations on the topics, which led to her pursuing a specialization in trauma therapies while simultaneously pursuing training in a generalist model for therapy and psychological evaluations (treatment for depression, anxiety, learning disabilities, autism, etc.)

“I got into this field to help change the trajectory of people’s lives, especially those who have been impacted by trauma. And I remain fervently dedicated to continuing in this field to impact my patients’ lives positively as they move forward.”

In her practice, Dr. Carol constantly witnesses the effects of the high-pressure, fast-paced culture that we all live in.

“Expectations are so high. People have difficulties setting boundaries with themselves and others and have a tough time practicing

self-compassion because they are trying to pursue unrealistic dreams of perfection.”

Earlier this year, Center for Resiliency moved to a new space at 160 Summit Avenue in Montvale and is welcoming new patients to the practice. Dr. Carol and her team of therapists help their patients address issues such as trauma and anxiety with results-driven treatments backed by scientific evidence.

“The new office affords us a larger, inviting new space for our staff to share together as colleagues,” she says. “Even more importantly, it is so energizing to see our CFR patients—of all ages—in our waiting room. Handing a small child a toy or coloring book and serving teens and adults a hot beverage and snack are some of the highlights of my day.” The space also affords the room to host events and support groups. “It’s an inviting and relaxing space for everyone we serve—that was my vision, and my patients deserve it!”

Dr. Carol’s personal philosophies are integral to how she manages her practice and life. “Regardless of fancy titles,  lifestyle, or what ‘baggage’ we have, we are humans first; the clinicians in my practice connect with each patient on a human level. Our expertise in psychology—mixed with compassion and a touch of humor—are what bring progress and healing to our patients.”

The value of lifelong learning is resonant throughout Dr. Carol’s life. “Keep learning. If you’re going to call yourself an expert, you must think of yourself as an eternal student. Always stay apprised of the ever-evolving research in your related field. There are always new things to learn from your patients, friends, colleagues, family, and personal life experiences. Lemon Pepper Chicken Thighs

Gwynn Galvin of Swirls of Flavor shares an easy and delicious chicken recipe that’s perfect for busy spring evenings. With just four ingredients, you will be enjoying Lemon Pepper Chicken Thighs on your dinner table in about 30 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

• 4 bone-in chicken thighs

• 4 Tablespoons butter at room temperature

• 1 Tablespoon lemon pepper seasoning

• 1 lemon

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 425F

1. Cut the lemon in half crosswise. Cut one half of the lemon into 4 slices and place the slices on the bottom of a two-quart baking dish.

2. Cut the other half of the lemon into 4 wedges and set aside.

3. In a small bowl combine the butter and lemon pepper seasoning, stirring until blended.

4. Spread the butter mixture on both sides of the chicken thighs and arrange the chicken in a single layer on top of the lemon slices.

5. Roast for 30 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 165F, basting occasionally with the buttery sauce that forms on the bottom of the baking dish as it cooks.

6. Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes. Season with salt, if desired, and serve with the reserved lemon wedges.

Spring Floral Bowl

BRING THE BRIGHTNESS AND FRESHNESS OF SPRING INDOORS BY CREATING YOUR OWN FLORAL BOWL ARRANGEMENT.

Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday – give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside.

Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!

Supplies:

• 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet

• spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional)

• 6” bowl (cereal bowl size)

• floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch)

• 12” square cut chicken wire

• wire cutters

• garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire

• clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do)

• lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional)

Preparation & Assembly:

• First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-floral elements used to assemble a floral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the flowers are built into to hold each stem in its place.

• Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl.

• Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later.

• Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one.

• Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens.

Tip:

Stuck with broken, leftover blooms from creating your floral bowl arrangements? Don’t discard those flowers just yet! Simply arrange leftover blooms and a few ornamental grasses onto a cake to elevate any tablescape. Even though the blooms are arranged out of water, they will look fresh for hours (especially when using roses and carnations). Enjoy!
