Home. Such a small word, yet it encompasses the vast tapestry of our lives. It serves as our grounding, our base, our launchpad. Each day begins and ends within its comforting embrace. While the specifics of what defines "home" may vary for each of us, its universal meaning and value are undeniable.

Contemplating the essence of home, our focus for this March issue was to celebrate what makes it uniquely special for you, our readers. “My father and uncles have built a great business with a wonderful reputation.

Matt Macchione appreciates the legacy of a family business passed down through the generations.

As a teenager, he worked with his father in the family’s paving business—many times while his friends were out having fun—however, his dedication paid off. Matt is now one of the owner-operators of his family business, A. Macchione Brothers, and values the lessons learned throughout the years that he’s already invested in the trade.

“The business began in my grandmother’s family,” says Matt. “My father and his brothers joined, and now my cousins and I are involved. All in all, we’ve been operating for over 40 years. My father and uncles have built a great business with a wonderful reputation.”

Although the offices are in Hackensack, most of their work is performed in northern Bergen County, so you may see their crews beautifying residential and commercial properties around the Pascack Valley with new asphalt surfaces. They also install Belgian block and concrete work associated with driveways, such as sidewalks, curbing, and aprons. “We have a full masonry staff to install paver walkways and patios,” adds Matt.

A typical driveway should last around 30 years with proper maintenance. Potholes, large cracks, and a gravelly consistency to the driveway indicate it’s time for a new one. Many homeowners add a new driveway to their home improvement checklist after major renovations because dumpsters and contracting equipment tend to do a lot of damage. “We frequently work with—and are referred by— local builders and landscapers,” notes Matt.

A. Macchione Brothers has always placed a strong emphasis on old-fashioned business values. “We usually visit the homeowner and provide in-person quotes which include the quote along with photos, references, and recommendations,” says Matt. “The homeowner can review and contact us with any questions. If our schedules don’t align and the homeowner is unable to be present, we can visit the property ourselves, measure, and leave a quote. Most jobs require a permit, but we handle all of that paperwork for the customer, too.” Once a driveway is installed, it won’t need sealing for at least 2-3 years. Customers will receive a reminder postcard in the mail when their driveway is due for sealing. It’s essential to stay on a consistent maintenance schedule to extend the life of your driveway.

The Macchione cousins who now own and operate the business have all grown up in the Pascack Valley area and have a heart for supporting many important local causes.

“We support Hackensack and Holy Name Hospitals, local American Legions and Knights of Columbus, and our fire, police, and ambulance departments,” says Matt.

“We can relate to our customers because my cousins and I are local homeowners, too. We always want to keep our customers happy, and an owner-operator is present on every job. Being a family-owned business is not just a slogan for us. We are there to make sure our customers are satisfied with the job. We wouldn’t be in business for over 40 years if we weren’t doing quality work.”

Noah Adler, RA, NCARB, of NHA Architects in Haworth, provides architectural design services focused on single-family and two-family residential projects. All mechanical and structural systems need to be integrated to work together.”

Growing up in Long Island, Noah was lucky enough to attend a high school with an architectural program where he was introduced to drafting and building scale models. As a three-time winner of the program’s annual competition, Noah is invited back each year to judge the designs of the current high school students participating in the program. “I love being able to inspire others to pursue a career in architecture,” says Noah, who went on to get his architectural degree at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Noah’s attention to detail and creativity are inspired by the renowned architects before him. “I’ve always loved the work of I.M. Pei and his order of geometry, and the way Santiago Calatrava (designer of NYC’s Oculus transportation hub near the Freedom Tower) integrates structure with design." As a student, he was selected to participate in an on-site study program at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, which also left a profound impression on him.

The contributions of a registered architect to a construction or renovation project far exceed the typical schematics and floor plans that most people envision. Noah works on various residential projects, including small renovations, major gut renovations, new construction, and commercial fit-outs.

Sean Patrick and Sean Victoria O’Callaghan share the same first name as well as a passion for entrepreneurship. Owners and operators of Flawless Finish Power Washing, this couple stumbled upon the business opportunity as a result of Sean Patrick’s occasional work with a local power washing company. The owner was ready to step away from the business, and Sean decided to buy some of his equipment and begin running it himself.

Sean Victoria had returned to school for her degree; however, after graduation, the business took off so quickly that she decided to start helping her husband run it. “We were growing—buying trucks, trailers, equipment, and hiring our first employees,” says Sean Patrick. “It was consuming all of my time, so my wife joined me in the business. Now we run two crews with two large trailer set-ups.”

The couple met while attending high school in Westwood and now serve their hometown and the entire Pascack Valley with power washing services.

“Power washing is a misunderstood industry,” says Sean Patrick. “Everyone pictures a little beat-up truck and a power washer that blasts high-pressure spray, damaging surfaces. That’s not the way we work!”

He explains that pressure itself does not clean anything; rather, it’s the technology, products, solutions, and detergents applied that get the job done. “The detergents do the work. We can specifically dial pressure up and down and adjust equipment to appropriate settings for each surface. The settings for vinyl siding will differ from those for a stucco house.”

Thus, Sean Patrick doesn’t provide estimates over the phone. Factors such as building material, landscaping, and siding type must be considered in the calculation. If there

are any existing leaks in the house, window cracks, or faulty outdoor electrical outlets, Sean and his crew must consider those conditions to properly prepare for the job.

“Our process is state-of-the-art,” he says. “All equipment is mounted on trailers so that it’s not dragged through your yard, damaging property. We can control the machine remotely to apply soap, solutions, and rinsing wherever we are on the property. The equipment is designed to do the job efficiently and safely.”

Roofs require special attention. The couple has had calls from property owners who have been denied homeowner insurance coverage due to algae or moss growth on the roof of their home. Moss growth can eventually lift the shingles and damage the shingles. Local insurance firms are now referring Flawless Finish to homeowners to remedy the issue safely and effectively.

Keep in mind, homes are not the only application for power washing--almost any outdoor item can be cleaned. The list includes houses, decks, sheds, kids’ outdoor toys, basketball courts, and trampolines.

Flawless Finish also provides paver restoration services. Sean’s crew will remove crooked pavers, clear obstructions beneath them, wash them, and then relevel, seal, and install them.

They’ve been called in for some unusual jobs, including power washing a grave marker. They were also called to wash large chunks of wood that were part of an art installation to be erected in Saudi Arabia. “We removed mold, etching, and rust debris—we had to be extremely delicate with them. Then, we dried and shrink-wrapped them for shipping,” says Sean Patrick.

Sean was also called to power wash the interior of a home that was undergoing a renovation. “The prior residents smoked in the home for over 40 years. The walls were brown! They didn’t have plans to fully gut the house and wanted to power wash it. In the end it looked like we had repainted the place, and it smelled fresh.”

As longtime residents of Westwood, most of their business comes from referrals, and Sean and Sean value traditional customer service and straightforward, transparent communication. “We always do our best to make our customers happy,” says Sean Victoria.

The couple values their hometown and supports local initiatives like Celebrate Westwood and BIZhub, as well as local law enforcement, fire departments, and recreational sports teams. “We even power washed the firehouse. I was happy to be able to do it for them as a thank you for all the time they volunteer. It’s done right and it looks good,” says Sean Patrick.

“We also cleaned up the gazebo in the center of town,” he says. “Because I grew up here and have been in business for 14 years, I feel like I literally know everyone. So I have to do a great job!”

As spring begins to make its first appearance, many Bergen County residents begin thinking about teeing up for some golf. Paramus Golf Course has you covered, with a beautiful public course and a new, upscale venue for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks.

Taverna on the Green opened in October of 2022 to a standing ovation of golfers who had not had an open bar or restaurant on the course for over five years and were clamoring for a place to enjoy snacks, cocktails, or post-game dining.

However, owner/operator Victoria Tahhan set her sites on much more than just a 19th hole. "We are open to the public all year long," she says. As their website so aptly puts it, Taverna on the Green offers country club service without the membership. "It's a big misconception that you must be a Paramus Golf Course member to dine here," she says. "We also operate the course's beverage cart service and Thirsty's, our new concession stand, which is also open to the public. It's a great place to stop for a quick bite and has a nice, relaxing outdoor space."

Coincidentally, Victoria worked in one of the prior iterations of the restaurant while she was a student at Bergen Community College. She went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Columbia and eventually found a career as a political strategist, but decided to return to her restaurant roots in her first endeavor as an owner. "I supported myself through college in the restaurant business," she says. "Now, I'm adding my own personalized touches and hoping it resonates with our guests and that they enjoy the experience."

The space was originally a 1790s carriage house, exuding historic coziness with an 18th-century feel. Original handhewn beams are still in their place. The fireplace is inviting in the wintertime, and the outdoor dining can't be matched during the spring and summer months. Taverna is perfect for private events, too, and can accommodate between 150 and 170 guests.

"We love hosting events and are able to use the outdoor greens as well," says Victoria. "We recently accommodated a wedding where the ceremony was outdoors, cocktails were on the patio, and the reception was inside. I like to say that the restaurant is a beautiful, blank canvas that you can come and decorate however you wish. It's your space for the day."

"We offer a bar menu and a golfer's menu, in addition to higher-end dining entrees like Veal Ossobuco, rib-eye steaks, lollypop lamb chops, and Maryland crab cakes. There are always plenty of vegetables and plant-forward dishes on the menu, too."

The bar area showcases an expanded tequila selection and two flat-screen TVs. Live music on Friday and Saturday evenings spans from rock, jazz, and Latin nights to karaoke and ladies' nights. Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.

lavender honey lemon soap

ingredients

• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap

• 1 lemon rind, zested

• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds

• 2 tablespoons of honey

• 15 drops of lavender essential oil

• 6 drops of lemon essential oil

• jar or bowl for melting soap base

• Silicone mold

Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn.  If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.
