Summer Spirit - The Joy of Kids and Pets
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy children bring to their families and their significant impact on their communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent demanding work and significant investment—but the rewards are great. We are pleased to highlight the best for Pascack Valley kids in this issue.
Secondly, who could forget pets? The companionship of an animal can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide unconditional love and the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The connection is often deep and meaningful, fostering empathy, responsibility, and friendship.
Growing up, we always had a family dog. My family went from a chocolate, to a black, and then a yellow Labrador retriever. There is a reason this breed is America’s most popular dog. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions with more than enough affection to go around for a family of any size. There is something special about growing up with a dog, and I would not have wanted it any other way.
What children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.
Cheers to August!

TOO MANY TOYS?
Clear Out the Clutter Before Classtime!
ARTICLE BY HOPE KERNER
When it comes to kids and pets, most of us can't help ourselves— we spoil them with all kinds of toys. It's all fun and games until we start stepping on Legos in bare feet or tripping over squeaky toys throughout the house. Maybe it's time to take a bite out of that clutter! After all, when was the last time your young child, grown doggy, or furry friend played with the toys they received as babies or puppies?
It may be time to say buh-bye to those items. With summer soon ending and the school year fast approaching (sadly), it's a good time to start with a clean slate and eliminate those lonely toys gathering dust bunnies throughout your house.
HOUSE CALL | HOME + DESIGN 26
You know that feeling of overwhelm and inability to focus when we have too much stuff in our drawers or closets? That's how our kids and pets feel when there's too much to choose from—and it is exacerbated when additional new items are presented.
Visual clutter is mental clutter, especially for children and pets. Kids have short attention spans and get distracted easily. A messy environment causes young brains to go into overdrive. When kids (or pets) cannot find what they are looking for, they jump from one thing to another, getting frustrated and losing focus. This can affect them emotionally as well. No one wants that before the start of a new school year!
Pets and children thrive when they are presented with simplified options. Fewer toys in your home will create orderliness, reduce stress, and improve the quality of play.
Collect toys that are outgrown, worn out, or no longer played with. Decide what to throw away and what to donate. Baskets and storage bins organized spaces and make clean-up much more manageable. Not sure where to begin? Start with one toy at a time and go from there, or consider letting us help!
Hope Kerner is a professional organizer whose company, All Things Neat, helps people declutter and organize their homes. All Things Neat provides full-service move assistance from packing/ unpacking, handling donations, and hiring antique appraisers and moving companies in Bergen County and surrounding areas. Hope's company also helps families navigate the disbursement of the home contents of departed loved ones. FULL-SPECTRUM DOULA SERVICES
ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLARA WANG
Chéna (Chey) Davis is passionate about guiding parents-to-be throughout the miracle of pregnancy and childbirth. We spoke to Chey to find out how she helps new moms and dads make empowered choices on their path to parenthood.
WHAT DOES A DOULA DO?
A doula is a labor and support coach—sort of a birth “guru.” I help parents understand what to expect, prepare for the reality of labor, and be ready for the postpartum months. I strongly believe in preparing the body with good nutrition and exercise before pregnancy. I also help moms to understand their rights and be comfortable with speaking out to their medical professionals.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT “SPEAKING OUT.”
Studies show that Black women are more likely to die in childbirth than White women. All women need to know how to speak to their doctor, for example, when to ask questions or press for an appointment if they don’t feel “right.”
Moms should understand that their due date is just an estimate, not a hard-and-fast day on the calendar. Do your research and listen to your body. Sometimes moms are induced too soon. Moms should never feel that they are being rushed to be induced into labor—you are allowed to say “no” to anything at any time.
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS

Owner Chéna (Chey) Davis
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN BEING A DOULA?
I was 19 when I was pregnant with my first child, and I wanted to make sure it was a perfect pregnancy. My medical provider seemed to keep pressing me with specific questions because I was young and Black. I felt it was an impersonal experience that could have been better. For someone who should be caring about me and my life, the experience left me rather cold.
Over the next few years, I began helping and advising my friends who were having children. When my eldest was 5, I learned of the doula profession, and right then and there, I knew that was what I wanted to do.
ARE THERE SPECIAL POPULATIONS YOU ESPECIALLY ENJOY WORKING WITH?
I enjoy working with all women, but especially minorities. Many minorities are unfamiliar with how a doula can help them throughout the process. These women think of a doula as a “luxury” and don’t realize how essential their support is. It’s also important to know that Medicaid and insurance may cover the services of a doula to some degree.
CAN YOU HELP WITH FERTILITY ISSUES AS WELL?
I provide full-spectrum doula support, including fertility support. Many times, I begin working with couples before they start IVF treatments. I guide mom in preparing her body for the process by eating right and moving right. Understanding the functional nature of the body, each person’s individual menstrual cycle, and unique signs of fertility are essential in promoting conception.
HOW DO YOU SPECIFICALLY HELP A WOMAN THROUGH LABOR AND BIRTH?
My best tools are my hands. I use massage techniques, acupressure, essential oils, and various other comfort measures. Once we determine the baby’s position, I can help position the mom more conducive for labor. Emotional support and affirmation are so important, too.

“I enjoy working with all women, but especially minorities. Many minorities are unfamiliar with how a doula can help them throughout the process.”
DO YOU ALSO PROVIDE NURSING AND POSTPARTUM SUPPORT?
I stay around once the baby is born to ensure mom’s “golden hour” with her new baby is happy and uninterrupted. I help her with her first nursing session—having a positive first experience is important because everything will progress from there. I teach mom how to get the baby to latch on and to position the baby properly. This helps to increase mom’s confidence.
Raising a baby takes “a village,” so I teach all of the family members how to help with general care: changing, bathing, swaddling, using car seats—mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa--everyone needs to know how to do it! I also provide additional postpartum ancestral or cultural healing techniques like yoni steaming (room steaming with herbs), belly-binding, and baby-wearing.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Seeing women feel empowered and victorious when they realize that they can do it. I also enjoy seeing their partners offer support and play an active role throughout the pregnancy, labor, and postpartum weeks. It’s important to have dads involved because they feel more connected to the experience when they play a part in it.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES?
Seeing the disparities within some of the communities I serve--because I may need to jump in to provide additional resources and connect my clients to the right people. Sometimes, I have to play a more significant role in advocating for underserved populations.

AEDE Performing Arts Studio
Elizabeth and Dan Mueller Circle Back to Their Roots
ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHARISSA H. YONG
The owners of AEDE dance school, Elizabeth and Dan Mueller, know what it is to see life come around full circle. Dan grew up in River Vale and attended Don Bosco, while Elizabeth was a student at Holy Angels who lived in Ridgefield Park. The couple met at a high school dance.
They began dating at age 15, and continued their relationship throughout college. Liz attended Manhattan College, and Dan earned a BFA in Dance, attending the University of the Arts in Philadelphia before transferring to Montclair University. Marriage soon followed.
In 2019, they took ownership of the AEDE dance school in Park Ridge—the same studio where Dan grew to develop his love of dance. “I grew up there—from the time I was six years old through high school,” says Dan. “Liz used to come to my dance competitions here.”
He returned to AEDE after a professional dancing career to share his education, experience, and love of dance with the next generation. He taught various classes and later became the assistant director of the school’s competitive classes, while Liz taught English for 13 years in Cliffside Park.

Eventually, the time was right for the couple to take over the studio because founders Anita Ehrler and Frank Mastrocola had decided to retire. A lifelong friendship between the former and new owners made the transition easier. “We still have a wonderful relationship with Anita and Frank,” says Elizabeth. “They are like second parents to us. Our kids refer to them as aunt and uncle!”
Complementary talents make running the school a balance of skills, as Dan manages the creative and instructional side of the business while Elizabeth assumes the scheduling, billing, and administrative tasks. Both of their children also attend AEDE—keeping the whole family together in one place! “It’s wonderful to be able to pass on my passion in the same place where it was founded,” says Dan.
The school offers classes in ballet, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop, acrobatic arts, and pointe, as well as private voice and piano lessons. Kids and their parents can decide if they want to follow a recreational or competitive track as they explore the world of dance.
“We have students currently working in New York City dance companies,” says Dan. “Some have gone on to become dance teachers, and several of our students dance on D1 college dance teams. We also have a few who major in dance education and performance. It’s a great achievement for us.”
Dan and Liz believe that dance education is essential in developing children and teens. “It makes you think differently,”
notes Dan. “Dance forces you to think outside of what’s ‘normal.’ It breeds discipline, hard work, and time management to balance your practice with school work and a social life.”
Since not every competition or audition results in a “win,” dance also teaches young people how to deal with disappointment. “We tell our students that it’s not about how the judges scored your performance— it’s how you felt when you walked off the stage,” says Dan. “It’s not about winning; it’s about making progress. Judges are subjective. Be comfortable with knowing that you did your best.”
Performing on stage builds self-esteem and confidence, teaching young students to present themselves properly and to be comfortable in front of others. “Putting yourself out there is so important,” says Dan.
Throughout the years, dance has been an important part of their lives. The Muellers appreciate the opportunity to work with students in the very studio that holds such wonderful memories for both of them.
“We have some great kids in our classes— we are lucky,” says Elizabeth. Dan adds, “We love our jobs, and we love watching these kids grow up. It’s humbling to be a part of their development as they mature from baby dancers to talented artists, and it’s fun to witness.
Creating great dancers—and even better people--is what AEDE is all about.

In May 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared a youth mental health crisis, citing social media as the primary driving factor. This could be a frightening statement for any parent. Luckily, psychologists and other researchers have been investigating social media's potential benefits and harmful effects. Let's look at what the research actually says.
DOES THE RESEARCH SHOW THAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS CAUSING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IN ADOLESCENTS?
Social media usage is not inherently beneficial or harmful to youth. Although the research shows that there is a correlation between lower mental health in teens and social media use, there are very limited studies, to date, that show a direct causation. In other words, several factors influence social media's effects on adolescents' mental health.
Imagine this equation:
Social media content, features, and functions + Teens' pre-existing strengths, vulnerabilities, and context in which they grew up,( i.e., values, ideologies, family dynamics) = Effects of social media on adolescent's mental health.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD WE GIVE KIDS ACCESS TO SOCIAL MEDIA?
There is no concrete age. The reason is that adolescent development occurs gradually and is continuous--starting with observable biological and neurological changes around the age of 10 and continuing through approximately 25-30. Therefore, social media use should be based on maturity levels and home environment. The potential risks of social media practice are likely more significant in early adolescence.
ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO SOCIAL MEDIA?
Despite the risks of social media use, there are some benefits. Social media platforms allow individuals to connect with friends or develop new friendships. Similarly, social media platforms offer spaces for social support, expose children to different cultures and
other variables that can encourage self-identity exploration, allow kids to discover new interests, and even participate in civic engagement.
WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA FOR KIDS AND TEENS?
1. Adult coaching is vital. Begin coaching your child about social media when they are 8-9 years old. This is not the same as allowing them to use it. It means you are having open discussions with them about how social media should be used. As pre-adolescents transition into their adolescent journey, adults should continue to help grow their social media literacy. Kids should learn how to question the accuracy and representativeness of social media content, understand that tactics are used to overgeneralize or disseminate misinformation, identify signs of problematic social media use, and comprehend how social media content and images influence social comparisons.
2. Clearly explain your family's view on social media. When introducing your child to social media, thoroughly explain your beliefs about how social media should be used. Research shows that the emphasis of its use should be the development of their own healthy socialization.
3. Tailor the functionalities and explain the implications
Take the time to explain to your child what each feature means, such as the "like" button. Discuss why it is important to have restricted time limits and why endless scrolling is unfavorable. Similarly, be mindful of who receives the notices and alerts, including changes to privacy policies or consents. Lastly, make your child explicitly aware of how their social media behavior will be used as data that can be stored or shared with others.
4. Limit exposure to harmful content.
Supervising adults should access the settings on each social platform to limit the content to which the child is exposed. Here is a helpful and practical guide on

how to restrict access to harmful content: rainn.org/articles/ how-filter-block-and-report-harmful-content-social-media
Again, monitoring and continuously discussing online content with your children also reduces the effects of exposure to harmful content.
5. Demonstrate healthy use of social media.
Ask your child what they think about your social media use. Are you demonstrating excessive use? Is social media interfering with your ability to be present? Can you try to be an example of how often and in what way you would like them to use social media?
6. Introduce social media as a de-prioritized activity. Clarify priorities. Priority activities are subjective to your family's values and beliefs but may include reading, exercising, spending in-person time with friends and family, and completing academic work. Of course, sleeping and eating should be demonstrated and explicitly explained as the most critical means of supporting positive mental health development.
Social media awareness, open conversation, and a firm, clear set of rules are great starting points for healthy online interactions. centerforresiliency.com

Love Unleashed
ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER
THE ONYX AND BREEZY FOUNDATION
Mark and Wanda Shefts have always shared a love for black Labrador retrievers--they have adopted many of these fun and affectionate dogs into their home over the years. In 2005, their passion transitioned into a cause when their five-year-old Lab, Breezy, was diagnosed with cancer and given six weeks to live.
“We were devastated,” says Mark. “We brought her to the Ryan Veterinary Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania for treatment. While sitting in the waiting room, we noticed the other families in the waiting room with pets in need of medical care. We were struck with the fact that animals truly become an important part of one’s family. So, when an animal gets sick, that’s devastating enough—but what do you do when you don’t have the means to pay for treatment?”
Breezy lived two-and-a-half more years thanks to the outstanding medical care the Shefts and UPenn provided for her. However, she passed away within several weeks of the Shefts’ senior Lab, Onyx.
The loss of both dogs at the same time was heartbreaking and prompted Mark and Wanda to establish a 501c3 organization, and the Onyx and Breezy Foundation was born. The Shefts and their team have been assisting individuals and organizations who share the same love of animals ever since.
“We are not a rescue organization,” notes Mark. “My wife and I both had Wall Street careers. We run this non-profit like a business, and Wanda is the driving force behind it all.” The foundation

focuses on helping to provide funding for medical care, equipment, and research in honor of Onyx and Breezy.
Pet owners must provide their tax return, a cost estimate for the surgery or medication, and prove they were denied CareCredit pet insurance to qualify for a grant. If the individual meets the criteria and is approved by the foundation, they will receive a grant to cover surgery or medical costs. No-kill shelters receive support after careful analysis of their administrative costs and their success in adopting out animals, and universities may apply for grants to fund projects or research. In fact, the organization has provided dog-sized oxygen tents and funded cancer studies for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
“Our primary focus is to provide immediate medical care for animals so that families can be relieved of the stress of euthanizing a pet or watching them live in pain. Because all administrative costs are absorbed, the Onyx and Breezy Foundation can proudly claim that 100 percent of donations go directly to helping animals. “When I seek out donations from friends or colleagues, it is important to me to be able to tell them that their support goes directly to the animals in need,” says Mark.
The foundation has also provided vital support for military and police animals, funding dog-sized bullet-proof vests for the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department, medicine and cooling vests for military dogs deployed to Afghanistan, and educational courses on treating injured canines in the field for police organizations.
When Hurricane Maria destroyed Puerto Rico in 2017, the foundation’s team was able to charter a plane to deliver veterinary medical supplies and transport homeless dogs back to the U.S. for successful adoption.
“I always had a dog and never realized how much love I had for them,” says Mark. “Our goal is to help as many animals as we can.”
Donors and fundraising events support the work of the Onyx and Breezy Foundation. Check out their website for information on their dinner auction and comedy night event at Portobellos in Oakland on Saturday, October 21.

Aeon Fitness and Gymnastics
Finding the Balance in Competitive Gymnastics
ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHARISSA H. YONG & SONG AND STORY PHOTOGRAPHY
Although Aeon Fitness and Gymnastics has turned out state, regional, and national champions, the highlight of the professional careers of owners Stephanie Green and Amanda Lorenz is celebrating achievement— at every level.
The co-owners value the recognition of hard work and dedication as their students strive to achieve their personal goals. “Everyone who comes here has their own unique level they wish to attain,” says Amanda. “So, our philosophy is to celebrate each student’s earned achievements.”
How does a gym with over 1600 students, 300 of which are involved in competitive teams, manage to understand each participant’s personal goals? After all, some kids just want to have fun, burn off some energy,
or learn how to do a cartwheel. “We provide recreational classes for kids who just want to have a good time,” notes Amanda. “There’s no pressure to compete—but they can if they have that desire.”
For those who wish to take their gymnastics training a step further, Stephanie and Amanda have created a unique competitive team structure that provides a customized experience for serious gymnasts aged 6-18 by offering five different competitive teams— two for men and three for women.
Each team is based on age and ability; tryouts are required. However, for Stephanie and Amanda, it’s not only about the gymnast’s skills; it’s about matching their students to the appropriate team to provide the best experience possible. CONTINUED >

Aeon helps young children become mentally and physically prepared for and understand the commitment of a competitive team with their pre-team training program for kids aged 2-9. Once a child decides to try out for a competitive team, it must be determined which team will best suit them.
Each of Aeon’s five teams competes in a separate gymnastics league, varying in commitment and difficulty levels. Each league has a different competitive season, governing body, and rules. All leagues allow for both individual and team competition.
“We look at each child individually to help them achieve their own accomplishments,” says Stephanie. “We get to know their form, technique, and skills to guide them where they will be most successful.
Since training requirements for the different teams span from 1 ½ hours to 28 hours a week, and competition travel ranges from state-wide to nationwide, the commitment and responsibility of participation can affect the entire family. It also creates an extended “family” for the gymnasts consisting of teammates, coaches, and Aeon’s committed staff members.
We couldn’t do all of this without the talent and professional skills of our high-level coaching staff,” says Amanda. “Our coaches have extensive backgrounds, degrees, and certifications in dance, gymnastics, and fitness, and some have been coaches of national teams. We are one unified Aeon team with multiple leagues and levels.”
Aeon is a nationally recognized gymnastics center. All of their teams have qualified to compete at the highest levels with frequent appearances on the awards podium. Aeon was also recently named Developmental Club of the Year in the USAG League.
“Having the ability to place kids in the group that fits them perfectly really elevates our program,” says Amanda. “Our vision is to see all of our students achieve their own success and reach their own goals.”
Stephanie adds, “Our students are all excellent in academics. They do a wonderful job of balancing school, family, and life. These kids are special to achieve all of this!”
“I think this says a lot about our character. Not all gymnastic centers share this philosophy, and it’s a big part of our success,” says Amanda.

WHAT IS THE CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH TO HEALTH CARE?
Chiropractic is based on the body's ability to maintain itself in a state of health while having the ability to heal itself. Imbalances and misalignments can cause nerve interference by creating pressure on the surrounding nerves. Like a garden hose with a kink in it can prevent proper water flow, the nerve system works the same way.
Physical, chemical, and emotional stressors affect proper neurological and bodily performance. A chiropractor focuses on displacements of the spine that interfere with proper nerve function. They address the cause rather than the symptoms of the problem, allowing the body to function optimally.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP PREGNANT MOMS?
Prenatal chiropractic care aims to achieve pelvic balance and improve the nervous system so the body can function better. We can accomplish this through the Webster technique, a chiropractic analysis, and gentle adjustment of the spine. If the pelvis is not balanced during pregnancy, it causes an imbalance in the surrounding musculature and ligaments, restricting the baby's ability to get into the optimal birth position.
AND THE PRACTICE CAN HELP BABIES TOO?
Chiropractic care for babies and children is safe, gentle, and essential for a little one's growing spine. Many parents have reported improved disposition, immune function, and better sleeping habits. Chiropractors are specifically trained to check for subtle subluxation or misalignments that

occur throughout all stages of growth and development. Our practice uses INSiGHT scanning to determine where the spinal interferences are and how these stressors may affect your nervous system. Through the scans, we can get a baseline score of how your body adapts and performs. This new technology is thermal-based, making it completely safe for kids and prenatal patients!
WHAT DREW YOU TO CHIROPRACTIC SCIENCE?
Both of us were drawn to the sensibility and logic of the chiropractic philosophy.
Stephanie: "I grew up with chiropractic, so it was all I knew. As I got older and experienced its health benefits, it only made sense to become a chiropractor myself. I have always loved working with people and having a
'hands-on approach.' Because of my personal experiences growing up, I wanted to share those benefits with as many people as possible."
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER IN Y OUR PRACTICE?
Stephanie: "Practicing alongside my father for the past five years has been a rewarding and grateful experience. Even before I joined the practice, I worked in the office and got to know many patients. I saw how much they enjoyed being under my dad's care. They placed their trust in him—I saw this firsthand. Although I have big shoes to fill, I learn so much from him on a daily basis!"

Fun Tricks To Teach Your Puppy
A list of exciting new tricks to teach your puppy
ARTICLE BAILEY MORRIS
We created a list of some fun tricks to teach your puppy! Whether you just welcomed a new furry friend into your home or you’re teaching an old dog new tricks, you and your pet are sure to have a fun time! Spending time playing and training with your pet makes for a great bonding experience! Don’t forget to reward them with some delicious dog treats when they successfully do a trick. My pup’s personal favorite treats are chicken, peanut butter, and carrots. We hope you and your pup have a great time learning the tricks on this list!
SPEAK
Get your dog to bark naturally (try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door). Once they bark, say ‘speak’ and reward them.
STAY
Have your dog sit and then tell them to stay. Hold your hand out with your palm toward their nose in the stop position. If they hold the position for a second or two, praise them and reward them with a treat. Keep repeating this and gradually having them stay longer.
SHAKE
Hold your hand out in front of your dog. Your dog may do some experimenting trying to figure out what you want. Once they put their paw in your hand, immediately praise and reward them.
