The Gentlemen’s Issue

“So many people think that they are not gifted because they don’t have an obvious talent that people can recognize because it doesn’t fall under the creative arts category—writing, dancing, music, acting, art or singing. Sadly, they let their real talents go undeveloped while they chase after fame. I am grateful for the people with obscure, unremarked talents because they make our lives easier---inventors, organizers, planners, peacemakers, communicators, activists, scientists and so forth. However, there is one gift that trumps all other talents—being an excellent parent. If you can successfully raise a child in this day and age to have integrity, then you have left a legacy that future generations will benefit from.” ― Shannon L. Alder

This month, we took care to find men in our community who are building a legacy through the lens of their passions. Perspective through the eyes of passion is like an awakening. It builds anticipation for the business plan and the hard work to come. The right perspective creates a foundation for connection. It sparks the momentum while keeping you grounded.

I hope this issue honors the men represented as well as the men reading it. To the fathers in our community, the business leaders, teachers, coaches, mentors, brothers and sons, we are thankful for the way you take time to shape our town and make us better. You are an anchor and a light.

Happy Father’s Day!

An Exquisite Endeavor

Distillery is Sifting the Colorado Horizon

“It started off as a passion project, just a hobby really,” Greg Norris, CEO and Master Distiller at BatchHouse Distillery, shares about his humble beginnings. With notes of cherry, oak and vanilla, BatchHouse Distillery crafts a bold Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey that graces the shelves of select locations in Colorado.

“It took about 3 ½ years to get the recipe right,” Greg reminisces. “It was very much grassroots. We actually started in the backyard of a house in Sedalia. From that, we paid homage to the small shed we were doing our batches out of. That is how we came up with the name, BatchHouse.”

New distillers often begin with vodka, but Greg jumped into the beautiful complexities of bourbon whiskey from the very start. He shares, “Bourbon is in my blood. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, it’s part of me as a person, deep down. I didn’t know it. I had to discover it. Then the passion grew. I toured the bourbon trail a bunch when I was younger and worked out there too. It spoke to me more than a clear spirit. The robustness, the depth in the flavors are so fascinating to me—all the different facets. The different grains and materials you can use to change those flavor profiles are so fascinating. That’s why I stuck with bourbon.”

Greg attributes BatchHouse Distillery’s success to his team: “We’ve been fortunate to start with the right people.”

Outside of great passions and a successful music career, Greg knows the people in his life are the most important. His wife, Anya, and son, Logan, are what life is all about for him. Anya is his COO, while his business partner, Ken Hoyt, is the CTO. The three of them carry the vision of BatchHouse Distillery.

Greg explains the heart behind their current selection: “Our Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey is a collaboration. This particular product is a combination where we are using Colorado grains and Kentucky water. A lot of people are using Colorado grains and Colorado water. We do a collaboration with the limestone water from Kentucky.”

“Ken being from Colorado and me being from Kentucky, we wanted to have that collaborative sort of feel come across in the product as well. That’s why we have the Colorado grains and Kentucky water. It represents where we’re each coming from.”

“We want to be a household name, but we don’t want to sacrifice any integrity,” Greg explains. “We view ourselves as more of a sipping whiskey and boutique product.” With integrity at the helm of their values, Greg and his team are selective in scaling with wisdom.

“I’m kind of relentless in my approach to things when I’m passionate about them. I don’t know how to do anything part-time. It’s just all in. That’s just what it is. I’m committed to my commitments,” Greg shares about his commitments to both his business and family.

His word of advice to those pursuing their dreams is, “Don’t skimp on anything in the beginning. Get your recipe right. Get your vision right.

Then, get the equipment that you need and don’t take corners in that either. At the end of the day, if you want a good product, you have to have good equipment to get it across the finish line and then that’s when the work starts. Getting your product on the shelf is where the work starts. Once you’re on the shelf, it’s time to really kick into high gear. Success isn’t getting in the stores or getting your music on the radio. It’s the relentless pursuit after the opportunities are there.”

T H E PRIVILEGEOFPASSION

There’s something about knowing why you show up each day. It’s even more powerful when you realize the answer is very simple. It’s about connection; connection to people, stories, nature,  emotions, this world and the human experience. It’s about making people smile, awakening their sight, inspiring their next step and doing it in a way that makes you come alive. The following gentlemen have found it and are honest enough to say they’re still discovering it daily.

LETTING EACH MOMENT BECOME AN ADVENTURE

Zachary Beguin Photographer

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION WITHIN YOUR WORK?

My passion within my work in nature photography is capturing the quiet moments that most people overlook, the stillness of a mountain lake or the expression in a wild animal’s eyes. I love being able to tell stories without words, to freeze a moment that reminds people how beautiful and alive the world is. More than anything, I’m passionate about helping others feel something through my work: awe, peace, connection, even urgency to protect.

WHAT IS A QUOTE THAT YOU FIND INSPIRING?

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” — Nelson Mandela

WHAT IS ONE WORD OF ADVICE THAT YOU LIKE TO LIVE BY?

“Believe.”

Belief is the start of everything. Before action, before success, before change, there’s belief. It’s what makes impossibilities into reality. Even when no one else sees it, belief gives you the power to keep showing up.

My adventures have taken me from Iceland’s dramatic vistas to Costa Rica’s vibrant jungles.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION WITHIN YOUR WORK?

It really is a combination of things. It’s striving to have the “perfect shift.” It’s having a group beckon you to their table and tell you what a fantastic experience they have had. It’s seeing a group of individuals that are all pulling the rope in the same direction every day and seeing all the cogs in the system spinning at the same time and at the same speed. When you are walking through the dining room on a packed night and your feet aren’t touching the floor, that’s the passion. That is what brings me to the restaurant and ultimately to the baseball field each day. The similarities of how a baseball team wins games and a restaurant team has a great service are oddly and incredibly similar.

WHAT IS A QUOTE THAT YOU FIND INSPIRING?

Billie Jean King once said, “Pressure is a privilege. It only comes to those that earn it.” I love that. I tell that to my players all the time, “You’ve earned this pressure, and it’s a positive thing.” The same goes for that young, inspired, future restaurateur. They want the opportunity to feel that level of pressure, too. It’s wildly inspiring.

WHAT IS ONE WORD OF ADVICE THAT YOU LIKE TO LIVE BY?

Persevere. Followed closely by appreciate.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION WITHIN YOUR WORK?

My passion is creating moments that connect with people. Whether it’s a great song, a funny story or just making someone laugh. That’s been my thing my whole life. Whether I’m on the radio or hosting a wedding or event, I love knowing I can set the tone, tell a story and give people something they’ll remember. Honestly, I don’t even consider this work. It’s just fun, I happen to get paid for. Making someone’s day is truly what fires me up.

WHAT IS YOUR WORD OF ADVICE THAT YOU LIVE BY?

Manifesting is everything. I knew when I was a kid that I wanted to work in media. Once I found the perfect way to entertain to make a living in college, the sky was the limit. My mom always told me to shoot for the stars, no matter what. It’s stuck with me–lots of hard work, building real relationships and understanding that timing is everything. And whatever you do, never burn bridges. Put yourself out there. Perfect everything. Learn to be the best brand in life that you can possibly be. And most importantly, have fun! CONTINUED >

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION WITHIN YOUR WORK?

The best part about my work is getting to hear people’s stories. I have the privilege of getting to know people at some of the most vulnerable points in their lives and they entrust me to help them feel better in some capacity. I take that responsibility very seriously and enjoy developing these connections greatly.

WHAT IS ONE WORD OF ADVICE THAT YOU LIKE TO LIVE BY?

CEO, Poonams by Design/Owner, E Class Transportation

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION WITHIN YOUR WORK?

I am the CEO of Poonam’s by Design, my wife’s interior design and renovation business and owner of E Class Transportation. These two new ventures became a newfound passion after retiring from my previous career in law enforcement over two years ago. While I’m not a designer or contractor like Poonam, years of collaboration with her have given me insight—and a few strong opinions!

As CEO and husband, my role is to support the business in any way needed. I love seeing clients smile when a project exceeds expectations—and if it doesn’t, I’m committed to making it right. I understand challenges come with the territory, but we embrace them as opportunities to grow.

My background in corporate leadership and law enforcement has equipped me to handle a wide range of situations with professionalism and grace. Beyond service, I’m passionate about building a positive, uplifting culture for our team. Work shouldn’t always feel like work—we’re fortunate to have an incredible, diverse team, each member bringing something powerful to the table. Keeping them motivated and happy is just as important as satisfying our clients.

Another part of my passion lies in delivering excellence through personalized, membership-only luxury black car services at E Class Transportation.

What you’re not changing, you’re choosing! That can be applied to life, relationships, health, etc.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION WITHIN YOUR WORK?

I’m most passionate about making the world smile. Be it through my Art of Fashion or by spreading good energy.

WHAT IS A QUOTE THAT YOU FIND INSPIRING?

Live your best. Give your best.

WHAT IS ONE WORD OF ADVICE THAT YOU LIKE TO LIVE BY?

One word would be hard. I live by a simple rule of mine. That’s to make sure I make at least ten people a day smile. The goal is that 10 of the people are strangers.

Four Elements Landscape and Outdoor Living creates award winning spaces for local clients.

Elements

Fifteen-year-old John Van pushed his lawnmower across a client’s lush, verdant lawn. The smell of freshly cut grass permeated the air as he meticulously cut it to his father’s standards. He never anticipated that the rest of his career would be about taming Colorado terrain and designing award-winning landscapes with Four Elements, founded by his father in 1987. “While in high school and college, I would help my parents out,” John explains. “I realized that I could make a couple of dollars, and that maybe I should continue. Twenty-plus years later, here I am! I try to make the company better every day and expand it every year.”

Four Elements specializes in outdoor living spaces. Colorado’s weather is unpredictable, to say the least, but it is perfect for outdoor living, as the sun shines 70 percent of the year. Spring, summer and fall are ideal seasons to enjoy the outdoors. Winter can be enjoyable too if a fireplace, heaters or an enclosed patio is in place.

“The goal for outdoor living spaces is to create ambience – a place for people to relax and enjoy being outside,” John says. “It doesn’t have to be a full-blown, expensive project. You can spend less and still achieve ambience. We can create something simple, like a small sitting area where a husband and wife can enjoy a glass of wine at the end of their day. We can add a water feature, a fire element or a pergola with furniture. It can be affordable and achieve the same goal as a larger project, with the same ambience. Our team treats every customer equally, regardless of the project’s size.”

A highly skilled team collaborates to transform a project from the initial design on paper into a stunning landscape. “It is satisfying and amazing to see the finished product,” John states enthusiastically.

The team consists of Ron Athison, the in-house architect/designer, Jeremy Hillman, the sales lead and Jimmy To, the lead project manager. Crews operate under the direction of these departments.

The team is well-educated in Colorado’s native landscape, selecting low-maintenance, functional and sustainable elements for each property. For instance, if the house faces east and west, the design incorporates plants that thrive in that orientation. The soil composition, the land contours, the lot size and the customer’s budget and priorities all play a part in choosing materials and creating the original design.

“THE GOAL OF OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES IS TO CREATE AMBIENCE—A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO RELAX AND ENJOY BEING OUTSIDE. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A FULL-BLOWN, EXPENSIVE PROJECT. YOU CAN SPEND LESS AND STILL ACHIEVE AMBIENCE.” -JOHN VAN OF FOUR ELEMENTS

Hardscapes, the non-living elements of landscape design, are a key part of Four Elements’ design. The company is known for its creative, high-quality hardscapes, including stone, concrete, paver pathways, patios, decks, planters, outdoor kitchens, fire features, water elements and more. They tailor to the client’s desires and the team’s suggestions during the initial planning phase by selecting durable, low-maintenance materials well-suited for the climate, which enhances the property’s value and provides the homeowner with years of enjoyment.

Lighting is the key to showcasing the design, creating atmosphere and extending the day into the night. Four Elements is adept at creating and installing lighting options that make its projects stand out.

Customers rave about John and his crew for their outstanding customer service. Tom, a client in Littleton, says, “John’s employees are the hardest-working people I’ve ever had on my property. Working with John and his crew was fantastic! There are very few contractors that I would allow on my property because I am very particular. John and his crew are quality, good people.”

For clients, David and Danathe Lyons, Four Elements redesigned their lot, seamlessly blending it into the natural terrain of their land. The project features various hardscapes, patios, a seven-drop waterfall, a fountain, a fire feature, pathways, planters and precision lighting.

“We have the most beautiful landscape in our neighborhood. The work is phenomenal!” Dana exclaims, “They were always courteous and cleaned up after themselves. I watched the precision with which these guys cut the pavers; it was impressive.  As an artist, I pay attention to these things. Their attention to detail was amazing.”

David Lyons added, “These guys are artisans, hands down. His crews take the time and do a great job! He is personable and wonderful to work with. The team brought in a lot of organic elements, like we have in our home. We wanted to reflect the inside on the outside and make it look like the house was built around the natural landscape first, not the other way around.”

John won’t be mowing lawns anymore! Instead, he oversees each project as a designer and general contractor to ensure his team’s work meets exceptional standards.

ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

Representation:

The District Gallery, 5113 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919

The Story Behind the Painting:

The Fromme-Birney Round Barn outside Mullinville, KS, was built in 1912. It is now on the State and National Register of Historic Places and one of the eight architectural wonders of Kansas. Interestingly enough, the barn is not along a major road. You have to purposely drive out of your way to see the barn. However, as I was driving along the winding dirt road, I could see this round barn off in the distance, and I knew I was in for something exciting. The closer I got, the more the anticipation grew. I arrived at the barn towards the evening, as the sun was setting, and I loved the warmth and glow that seemed to radiate from the barn. As I painted this, I wanted to capture the feeling I had of the anticipation of seeing the barn and the satisfaction when I arrived. I could definitely say that at the end of the day and at the end of the long drive to see this architectural wonder of a round barn, it was worth the effort and worth the trip.
