A Summer of Celebration and Something New

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote this within the pages of The Great Gatsby. I come back to this quote every summer, time and time again.

There’s something beautiful and brand new about summer and sunlight in July. It feels golden, transformative and iridescent. The sun draws us out to splash in the pool, take walks in the park and read under the refuge of a big tree. We join the Summer Reading program at the library and plan road trips both near and far.

This year our nation celebrates its 250th Anniversary, Colorado has its 150th Anniversary and our beautiful Town of Parker celebrates its 45th anniversary! With these celebrations, we found the most vibrant treasure within the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo. We had the honor and privilege of getting to know the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Fair Board Director, Debbie Mills along with The Rodeo Princess, Addison Staninger. They invite us into an audacious world of heritage, engagement and dedication.

I love what Addison shares. She says, “When you step into something new, you push yourself to be a better person, and you’ll grow in that… Even in the competition, the girls there build you up, and they want you to be the best person...” There’s something so bold about pushing ourselves as well as those around us to be the best people we can be.

Whether it’s tips and tricks to get your car road trip ready with with Drew Gorman, owner of Absolute Automotive in Parker or foundational rhythms for a healthier lifestyle with Mona Merrick, Owner of Body Balance Coaching, we hope this issue builds you up and helps prepare you for your next expedition. We also added a couple travel articles to inspire a little wanderlust and whimsical voyage ahead.

May July bring a feeling of beginning again. You are resilient. We wish you the best as you venture forth!

Happy exploring!

Discovering Lake Geneva

My Journey of Food, History and Charm

When I arrived in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. From what I had researched, it was going to be a whole new experience for me. What I found was a destination entrenched in history, filled with culinary delights and offering experiences that felt straight out of a movie.

A RESORT WITH HISTORY

I stayed at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa, a property with an interesting past. In the late 60s, it was a glamorous retreat where celebrities and entertainers gathered. Today, the resort has been transformed into a family-friendly destination, complete with horseback riding, indoor water park, 18-hole golf course and multiple pools. My room overlooked the golf course, giving me a good view of the grounds.

DINING TO REMEMBER

One of my most memorable experiences was dinner at Lake Lawn Resort. We had so many courses that I lost count, and I definitely ate well on this trip! Crab cakes, lobster mac and cheese, seared scallops and award-winning desserts made the evening a decadent and scrumptious experience. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a masterpiece of a culinary journey, featuring Lake Geneva’s finest, that showcased Wisconsin’s blend of tradition and innovation.

A TRADITION LIKE NO OTHER

The highlight of my trip, however, was the U.S. Mailboat tour. Operated by Gage Lake Geneva Cruise Lines, this century-long tradition combines a scenic cruise around the lake with entertainment of live mail delivery to homes along the lake. It was thrilling to watch the “mail jumper” leap off the moving boat, slip the mail into the box and sprint to hop back on, all while the boat remained moving. Passing iconic estates, such as those of the Wrigley and Schwinn families, made the ride spectacular to be a part of.

ADVENTURE & DISCOVERY

The most exhilarating adventure I had while visiting was zip-lining, which was an absolute blast and provided a fun way to see the landscape. I never thought in my life I would allow myself to be propelled high into the sky, whizzing by

like a rocket, but there is a first time for everything. While there, I learned that the company initially began as an educational training facility and has since grown into one of the most approachable and friendly adventure spots in the area. I appreciated the welcoming environment and the staff during my visit. One of the most fascinating stops was Yerkes Observatory.

Even though it was raining and we couldn’t use the telescope that day, just standing in the room and seeing its massive scale was incredible. I was amazed to learn that Yerkes has a long history of astronomical research and continues to serve as a hub for education and discovery. A great stop if you have kids fascinated by space, love gazing at the stars or are into STEAM and learning.

THE CHARM OF LAKE GENEVA

What impressed me most was the atmosphere. Families return here year after year, providing a timeless summer resort vibe, with many city visitors spending their summers here. If I could give one piece of advice to future travelers, it would be to stay longer. I was there for three days, and it wasn’t enough time. There’s just so much to do. My most cherished memory was the boat ride, my most empowering experience was zip-lining and my most peaceful moments were spent admiring the gorgeous days by the lake. The homes were stunning, and watching the mail jumper in action is something I’ll never forget.

Meet Your Neighbor: Debbie Mills

Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Fair Board Director, Debbie Mills Leads With Style and Grace

Recognized as Committee Woman of the Year by The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, Debbie Mills is the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Fair Board Director.

DEBBIE, STARTING IN THE MIDDLE, CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT TRAVELING TO RODEOS WITH YOUR GIRLS WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGER?

They did youth rodeo in high school, primarily National Little Britches Rodeo, while online schooling. So, we would leave on Wednesdays and go to Utah, Kansas, Wyoming, all over Colorado, every weekend, year-round. You know, you can do it as much as you want to. And it’s great because of the relationships they built. They still keep in touch with kids from when they were kids. Traveling like that gives you an opportunity to meet people that you would never normally get a chance to meet. It is really like a family.

DID YOU GROW UP FAMILIAR WITH THE RODEO?

No. My parents got me a pony when we moved to Colorado. I hated moving when I was in fifth grade. (It was a hard transition), and that pony was so mean. It dragged me around and kicked me, and I never told my mom.

She would just drop us off. Those were the days when you just kind of got dropped off, and you just survived until it was dark and you had to come in.

So, when our girls started riding, we wanted to make sure they knew what they were doing and make sure they were safe. It’s like anything: the more you get into something, the more specialized your equipment gets, the more you know.

WHAT MADE IT A PASSION FOR YOU?

Every little girl loves a horse, right? So, it was just knowing that I had one. Not everybody gets that opportunity. We lived a mile from where we kept the horses, so I used to ride my bike to go feed them. It was my friend’s property, so we took turns taking care of things. I mean, that’s the thing about animals, 4-H and horses: they have to be your priority. You can’t say “Oh, I’m gonna go out with my friends.” You have to take care of your horses.

When our girls went to college, they had seven horses at the time. It makes you realize it’s a lifetime sport.

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR & RODEO?

20 years this year! It’s amazing that it’s gone that fast, and it’s changed tremendously [over] the last 20 years. Because we are a fair and rodeo, you can go ride carnival rides, check out the animal barns and vendors. You can do [activities] along the midway. There are food vendors. There’s a lot to do! I think the average stay is about two and a half hours. You get a little bit of everything.

CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT YOUR DISTINCT STYLE?

My motto is turquoise goes with everything. I love turquoise. I always wear it. I also love vintage. To me, it’s something you can do year-round and no matter where you go.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PART OF THE DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR & RODEO FOR YOU?

I love it! I can remember when we used to meet in the back room at Village Inn on Free Pie Wednesday. You know, we’d have these meetings, and at the end of the fair, all the directors back when it was a private association would pull out their checkbooks and write checks for what wasn’t covered. It has grown so much!

For me, it’s exciting to see the changes and the things we’ve been able to do. We’ve been able to appreciate the heritage, but bring new things in and keep people involved in it.

We’ve been around since 1918, and there’s a lot of history there. Agriculture will never go away. If you eat, you’re part of agriculture. It’s important to keep people involved.

PURA VIDA FOR ALL

HOW COSTA RICA MASTERS FAMILY FUN, SUSTAINABLE LUXURY AND ECO-TOURISM

Costa Rica is a rare destination that offers something for everyone. Its variety is what truly sets it apart; you can move from lush rainforests and volcanoes to serene beaches and luxury resorts all within one trip. It’s also a destination deeply rooted in wellness, sustainability and the “Pura Vida” (pure life) lifestyle, which focuses on an intentional mindset of gratitude, resilience and simplicity. It helps explain why it’s home to one of the world’s celebrated Blue Zones. For families, couples and adventure travelers alike, Costa Rica blends eco-conscious travel with unforgettable experiences in a way few places can.

Ashley Church, travel advisor for Travel Sense Co., shares her insider tips on what makes Costa Rica unique.

What I love most about Costa Rica is how many different environments you can experience in one trip. In one part of the country, you’re surrounded by rainforest, wildlife, waterfalls and volcano views. In another, you’re enjoying peaceful beaches and elevated coastal luxury. That contrast is what makes Costa Rica so special. It’s not just a beach destination; it’s an immersive nature destination where adventure, relaxation and sustainability all come together. Costa Rica is also incredibly intentional about protecting its natural environment, which adds so much value for travelers who want their trip to feel meaningful as well as beautiful.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY, LUXURY, ECO-FRIENDLY STAYS:

Near La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, we stayed at Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, which was an incredible blend of luxury and nature, both family-friendly and adults looking for a romantic retreat. The natural hot springs were one of the most memorable parts of the trip, such a unique and relaxing experience. That area is ideal for travelers who want to combine adventure with upscale accommodation. Other standout luxury properties there include Nayara Tented Camp (family-friendly), Nayara Springs (adult-only) and The Springs Resort & Spa (family-friendly).

In Guanacaste, we stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, which was the ultimate luxury experience. The Papagayo Peninsula is perfect for travelers wanting a refined beach stay, and the nearby Andaz Costa Rica is another great option. Many of these resorts do a beautiful job blending high-end hospitality with Costa Rica’s eco-conscious values.

AS FAR AS ADVENTURES GO, THIS IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND:

The Arenal area was definitely the adventure portion of our trip. Some of our favorite experiences were the hanging bridges (which I’d absolutely call a must-do), ziplining, a nocturnal wildlife hike and waterfall rappelling with Pure Trek Canyoning. That excursion was especially memorable because it combined adrenaline with an authentic Costa Rican lunch afterward.

I’d also recommend travelers consider places like Monteverde Cloud Forest and Manuel Antonio for future trips. Manuel Antonio is especially known for its biodiversity, wildlife and strong connection to eco-tourism, making it a great complement to a beach or volcano itinerary.

AND THE DINING EXPERIENCES:

We dined at the hotels during our stay, and the food was phenomenal throughout the trip. Costa Rica’s Blue Zone connection adds another interesting layer to the culinary experience because there’s a strong emphasis on fresh, nourishing ingredients and food that supports wellness. Even at luxury resorts, that sense of balance and local influence really comes through. Some of my highlights were the national dish, gallo pinto (a simple but perfect breakfast addition) and Costa Rican coffee. I still dream about the French press coffee each morning at Tabacón Resort & Spa.

RODEO PRINCESS IN PARKER

BY KRISTEN GONZALES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANCE THE MAGIC PHOTOS

THE JOY, CAMARADERIE AND GRIT OF THE DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR & RODEO THROUGH THE EYES OF PARKER’S PRINCESS, ADDISON STANINGER

Editor’s Note: The Douglas County Fair & Rodeo marks its 108th year beginning July 24 and spanning two weeks celebrating Douglas County’s Western and ag roots. This year’s fair and rodeo features premier acts such as Trace Adkins and AWOLNATION, ProRodeo events, food and arts open class competitions and more. Find tickets and more information douglascountyfairandrodeo.com

Watching the reins loop around the impressive horns of a bull as the rush of excitement filled the arena, seeing the intense focus of small children hanging onto woolly sheep in the competitive atmosphere of Mutton Bustin’ and viewing the royalty members sitting tall on their horses were impactful moments for five-yearold Addison Staninger. Years later, it was these memorable occasions that sparked her passion for rodeo and led her to becoming a Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Princess.

“I remember the first rodeo we went to, I was like five years old,” Addison says. “We were going to mutton bust, but I think they were full. I just remember watching everything happen and wanting to be a part of it…That was the moment it all clicked.”

A Pinery resident and home-schooled sophomore in high school, Addison understands that she’s not the typical cowgirl. Living in a suburban neighborhood and running track for Ponderosa High School, most people wouldn’t know she’s a rodeo princess. She sees this as an opportunity to demonstrate that rodeo is for everyone.

“I think a lot of people, when they see a rodeo princess, they think they live on 100 acres with cows and horses,” Addison explains. “I think that a lot of people discount themselves from the rodeo and the Western way of life because they feel like they don’t fit in or they don’t belong. I think people wouldn’t guess that about me because I do live in a suburb.”

She goes on, “But I think it’s really important to understand that rodeo is for everyone. It’s not just for cowgirls.”

Addison pursued her rodeo royalty with the help of her award-winning mentor, Debbie Mills, the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Fair Board Director. With Debbie’s guidance, Addison achieved the points required throughout the royalty pageant process of riding, testing rodeo knowledge, a personal interview, modeling and public speaking to become Douglas County’s Fair & Rodeo Princess in July 2025.

Over the past year, Addison has put her princess title to work throughout the Douglas County community, visiting schools, riding, attending Rotary Club meetings and educating about the joy and heart of the rodeo. She attributes her role as a princess to growing her confidence and stepping into something new. Her advice to younger girls looking at the royalty process echoes that stance.

“When you step into something new, you push yourself to be a better person, and you’ll grow in that,” Addison explains. “Even in the competition, the girls there build you up, and they want you to be the best person you can. They don’t care if you walk away with a crown; they want you to be the best person.”

The sense of camaraderie among the rodeo is what has propelled the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo to grow from a $10,000 to a $300,000 purse for contestants’ winnings in just the past 20 years. With its official start in 1918, the rodeo turns 108 this year and ranks 40th out of 300 rodeos across the country.

The combination of rodeo events like bull riding, breakaway roping, barrel racing and bareback riding with the fair that features carnival rides, singer and songwriter Trace Adkins in concert, a petting zoo and a farm-to-table brunch, the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo brings something for everyone to enjoy. Even in an ever-growing urban landscape, the Western way of life provides a moral backdrop and features agriculture that benefits everyone.

“Going to the rodeos, you get to be around agriculture, and I think in Douglas County people really value heritage and history,” Addison adds. “It’s knowing you are furthering something greater than yourself.”

This rodeo community is successful due to hard work, grit, sacrifice, and above all, sustaining the essence of the rodeo family. From young girls building each other in confidence throughout the royalty pageant process to local farmers showcasing their delicious food to contestants competing against each other one minute and helping a fellow competitor the next, the fair and rodeo provides a link throughout all walks of life that brings joy, hustle and promise to our Douglas County residents for 10 consecutive days at the end of July.

“The Western way of life will never go away,” Addison says proudly. “And I think the principles that it has, like hard work, God, country, family, still need to be furthered on. So even if you don’t have cattle, even if you don’t have horses, you can still pursue that lifestyle in that way. I don’t think that should be the Western way of life. I think that should be a lifestyle we all strive to live.”

“I THINK IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT RODEO IS FOR EVERYONE.”

The Story Behind the Painting:

These apples were from Gieringer’s Family Farm near Edgerton, Kansas. As I was driving through the area, I noticed the orchard sign and decided to stop and see what I might find. I’m so glad I did as I wasn’t disappointed. The farm was full of people picking fresh apples to take home, and there was a wonderful sense of excitement and freshness in the air. I wanted to capture that same feeling in my painting—the joy, the energy, and the simple delight of the moment. Taking the time to stop was well worth it, and the apples were absolutely delicious.

ROAD READY TRAVEL

It’s summer, time to hit the road! We pack our suitcases, snacks and sometimes even the family canine, but do we prepare our vehicle with the same precision and care? Vehicle breakdowns can wreck a vacation getaway.

I spoke with Drew Gorman, owner of Absolute Automotive in Parker, who knows all about breakdowns. He has years of experience in the automotive business. “When I was four or five, my dad bought me a go-kart and taught me how to change the oil. I found out that I was really good at it!” That was the beginning of a lifelong career in the car maintenance and repair business.

Drew worked in various shops before going out on his own four years ago. He wanted more family time and decided that opening his own business would give him that opportunity. He took a risk and opened Absolute Automotive, achieving the lifestyle goal he wanted: more time with his family and the bonus of a thriving business.

“We are a small shop, so sometimes my kids will just come down and hang out. We have a family feel here,” he tells me.

His shop has been awarded the Top Rated Service Center by CARFAX for 2024 and 2025. “We are a one-stop shop. We do everything from tire repairs to engine replacement!” he enthusiastically says.

When it comes to practical steps we can take to prepare our vehicles for safe road travel, Drew has a few tips.

“The goal is to get you there and back safely without problems,” he confidently shares.

HERE ARE A FEW OF DREW’S CAR-READY PREP STEPS!

1. Make sure windshield wipers and sprayers are working and full of wiper fluid.

2. Check tire pressure. The recommended pressure is usually on the tire’s sidewall.

3. Check the condition of tire treads to avoid unexpected blowouts. If tires are wearing unevenly,  there may be an alignment issue that a shop can repair.

4. Check oil and all fluids and make sure they are full and clean.

5. Check the battery. “Batteries like to die in extreme temperature changes. We get a lot of battery replacements at the beginning of summer and the end of winter,” he cautions.

6. Check to be sure you have a spare tire and know how to install it.

7. Keep plenty of water and other drinks in the car in case of a breakdown.

8. Keep up with maintenance.

“I think one of the big things is doing regular maintenance. People think that preventative recommendations are just another cost, when in fact they prevent major breakdowns in the future.” He recommends an oil change every 5,000 miles and fluid, filter and transmission checks every 15,000 miles.

If you don’t want to do the auto check yourself, Absolute Automotive does an oil change and safety inspection for a reasonable price. They also offer an in-depth safety inspection to check all internal components, fluid levels, brakes and more.

I’m always hesitant to take my car in for an evaluation because I’m often given an extensive list of ‘recommended’ repairs with a hefty estimate. Absolute Automotive is thorough and fair. Drew practices full disclosure and transparency.

He says, “We give you a regular and digital inspection so everything we see, you get to see too.”

The shop will provide a priority list with repairs needed before a trip and those that can wait until later.

Visit absoluteautomotive.co for a list of services provided, domestic and import vehicles they service, reviews and a blog with car care education.

Mona Merrick, Owner of Body Balance Coaching, Shares Easy Ways to Maintain Gut Health

YOUR HEALTHY LIFE

For many, living a healthy life means working out a few times a week and eating fruits and vegetables regularly. But according to Mona Merrick, a Parker-based functional health coach and Pilates instructor, the health journey includes physical, emotional and mental well-being, and the gut serves as a foundation.

“The gut influences nearly every major system in the body, not just digestion,” she says. “The health of the gut can affect how you feel physically, mentally, emotionally and even how you look externally.”

The gut, or the organs responsible for the digestive system, is a full-body system from the mouth to the bum that includes the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and rectum.

“The gut hosts much of your immune system,” Mona says. “It communicates with the brain (the gut-brain axis), it helps determine how efficiently your body creates energy from food, and the gut helps process and eliminate hormones.”

Mona is the owner of Body Balance Coaching. She’s spent the last 15 years helping people create and implement a healthy lifestyle, from building mental resiliency to consistently working out and eating well.

She also helps people recognize symptoms of low blood sugar, which could include cold sweats, lightheadedness or being hangry and identify foods they are sensitive to. Her food sensitivity tests run against foods clients have eaten and ones they may have never tried.

“When I teach people, I try to get them in tune with their body and their gut,” Mona says.

WHEN IT COMES TO MANAGING GUT HEALTH, HERE’S WHAT MONA RECOMMENDS:

• Eat a wide variety of whole foods, fruits and vegetables and rotate your food selections. Smoothies are a great option.

• Chew your food well. Digestion begins in the mouth, and breaking food into smaller pieces can help prevent bloating, gas and poor nutrient absorption.

• Don’t eat on the run. Eating on the move puts your body in fight-or-flight mode, which puts digestion on hold. “Your nervous system needs to be in a calm state in order to break down, absorb and assimilate what you consume,” Mona says.

• Increase fiber gradually, working your way up to 50 grams a day. “Fiber acts as food for the trillions of beneficial bacteria living in the gut, which keep our gut lining healthy and strong,” she says.

• Improve sleep by going to bed when your body is tired. Implementing a consistent routine, reducing screen time before bed, limiting caffeine late in the day and enjoying morning sunlight also helps.

• Manage stress levels. Stress is an inflammatory, so managing stress is important. It can be done through meditation, community involvement, moving your body and taking time to slow down.

• Pursue hobbies and passions that bring you joy. “Creating fulfillment calms the nervous system, which can positively affect digestion, inflammation, hormones and overall gut function,” Mona says.

It’s important to check in with your body and gut on a regular basis, especially while traveling and managing busy summer schedules.

Mona recommends people take a probiotic and bring healthy snacks, such as clean beef jerky, fruit, nuts and coconut water, when traveling. Eating fermented foods like cultured yogurt and sauerkraut and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels also help keep the gut in check.

More importantly, “rest and reset,” Mona says. “Don’t overbook yourself. Spend time with friends and family and get quality sleep.”

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

FEATURING JEN COHEN

Discover the full 10% Target Mindset framework.

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
