LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Health & Wellness Issue For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. The approach for this issue of Parker Lifestyle is from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Take the pressure off as you leisure the pages of this issue. Reflect in a way that improves your plans for living right now. We hope January inspires you to become the best version of yourself and make it a lifelong pursuit. Rediscover the why behind your health and fitness goals. Take note of what you can do to invest in yourself and those around you. Embrace life for the adventure it holds and keep a positive perspective for the future ahead. Each of our articles introduces different people and communities that believe in you and are cheering you on. You're not alone in your health and wellness journey. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse. For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking trips a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brûlée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that tasty dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Poulette Bakeshop or West Main Taproom & Grill. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re cheering for you. Many say Santa Claus speaks a special language that all the children of the world understand. For one Santa Claus, that language is American Sign Language (ASL). Deaf Santa Claus – also known as Santa Charles – made his way from Texas to Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, bringing the magic of Saint Nick. Students were able to tell Santa what’s on their Christmas list— receiving a response more eloquent than a thumbs-up or wave.

ith a promise of stronger muscles, stronger health and stronger self, The Exercise Coach can take you to the next level no matter your age or where you are in your fitness journey. “Making a difference in someone’s life is my passion,” owner Shelli Sifrit, says. Shelli and her husband, Mark, have been serving the Parker community since 2020 and recently opened their second location in Castle Rock. They have helped clients from 15-years-old to 87-years-old gain strength and balance in just two 20-minute sessions a week. “Our vision is to transform

the way we resist and reverse the usual aging process,” Shelli explains. The age-old philosophy of “just getting moving,” isn’t the only answer, especially as we age. The healthier and more productive approach is to exercise smarter, not longer. Traditional exercise tools deliver too much load at certain points and too little resistance at others. This mismatch dramatically reduces exercise effectiveness and promotes improper form. As the largest personal training studio brand, The Exercise Coach not only offers an ideal solution for busy people, but the proprietary equipment, Exerbotics®, and coach-led workouts are differentiators that set the franchise apart. The bio-sensitive training technologies make it possible

to measure your unique muscular and metabolic makeup and prescribe workouts that are entirely appropriate for you. The quick sessions and the ability to see instant results right on the screen provide motivation and a sense of accomplishment. By prioritizing resistance training to optimize health strength and vitality, people can do what they love. “Medicine has made it that we all live longer, and people want to be active with their grandkids. It allows us to do outdoor activities safely as we age and do the things we want to do,” Shelli explains. “I have always been active, but I was late becoming a hiker. I am much stronger than I used to be and more confident.” Strength training has been proven to have positive health and fitness benefits.

Coach Emily in the new Castle Rock studio

Reducing body fat, increasing metabolic rate, increasing bone mineral density, reducing back and arthritic pain, and avoiding muscle loss are just some of the main benefits. Core strength, flexibility and endurance are also key to functional and safe performance. “Our Exercise Philosophy is to simultaneously maximize safety, effectiveness and efficiency,” Shelli relates. Instead of asking members to adapt to a dumbbell or weight stack, the technologies adapt to the individual’s capabilities and comfort level every second of every session. Shelli says members have recovered quicker from hip and knee replacements, ankle surgery and found relief from neuropathy. Members also lose weight as they gain muscle and become more active.

Shelli and Mark are excited to be making a difference in the Parker and Castle Rock communities and The Exercise Coach is a proud member of the Parker Chamber of Commerce. The Exercise Coach is now also a Renew Active® premium location. The program is part of many UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans that offer fitness programs at no cost or a reduced rate, depending on the workout plan members choose. The Exercise Coach is changing lives one member at a time. “We want to empower and inspire people to enjoy strength,” Shelli emphasizes. “Our members in Parker are like family and now we have a new family in Castle Rock too.” To learn more visit exercisecoach.com/ parker, listen to the Strength Changes Everything podcast or call (720) 399-0788.

Jill Yasskin, Elder Care Manager and Senior Real Estate Specialist

Colorado is experiencing a notable rise in its senior-care demographic as a record-setting number of Boomers enter their 80s. And, as seniors are living longer, they’re also having to make decisions previous generations didn’t have to make. They didn’t live long enough. Plus, as you can imagine—and AARP and the non-stop media remind us daily— seniors are in ever-increasing danger of being scammed. But, despite the worries seniors have of becoming a statistic of exploitation, they still have to field a considerable amount of legitimate advice being directed toward them—but not all of it is well-informed. Bottom line? With so much information coming at us, it’s easy to become paranoid. And it gets easier as we age, easier as our desires and needs change. There are too many unfamiliar-to-us decisions to be made—even legitimate ones! And worry on top of tough decision-making can be both an overwhelming and confusing process. But who do you trust? Jill Yasskin, Elder Care Manager at Aging at 5280 and Senior Real Estate Realtor at the Barrington Group Real Estate company, understands all of your frustrations, and she wants to take all of the negativity away from you—all of the frustration and indecisiveness that the fear-of-the-unknown bogey monster piles on. Jill’s primary goal is to help elders navigate the healthcare system while also helping them move into

Jill is a dedicated advocate committed to helping older adults with all aspects of aging and transition. “Aging is a journey with evolving stages of health, social and financial well-being,” she shares. “Walking with you every step of the way is necessary and comforting for [the] families we serve and very fulfilling for me.” Having worked over 10 years in the hospice and palliative care industry, Jill feels she has “a unique and special understanding of the many key issues facing our seniors in the Denver community,” and is dedicated to helping older adults with all of the aspects of aging and transition. “Whatever phase you are in life,” she says, “I can help with senior community placement, transition, downsizing, real estate services, care navigation, Medicaid benefits and asset protection.” To achieve this ideal, Jill begins her client consultation process by conducting a complimentary evaluation. “I begin by listening to your needs and guiding you through the process,” she shares, “ensuring your

loved one is provided with the information needed to navigate the aging process.” Jill then drafts a personalized plan, tailored to both your short and long-term goals. Interestingly, the logo for Aging at 5280 contains a fingerprint image, and according to their website (www.agingat5280. com), every human fingerprint is unique. It doesn’t change with age or growth, and the “fingerprint pattern reveals a lot about our inborn personality, behavior, strengths, limitations, learning and acquiring style.” It is that explanation, right there, the understanding that our uniqueness is a gift. That is why Jill Yasskin takes great pride in working with her clients to customize their own, unique roadmap to aging. She strives to find each of her clients at Aging at 5280, as well as the Barrington Group, the ideal solution— one based on each individual’s personality, behavior and overall lifestyle. TRAIN to rediscover YOU R S E L F Joey Solano is an in-home personal trainer and coach. He named his business Black Sheep Lifestyle to represent the concept of being different and to use it as your advantage. While his journey began as a personal endeavor to help his mom regain her health after retirement, Joey realized so many people reach retirement and have health issues. His mission is to change that.

PERSONAL TRAINER JOEY SOLANO BELIEVES IN A BETTER FUTURE FOR YOU

“It’s possible to rediscover yourself,” Joey shares. That’s exactly what he aspires for in his clients. He begins with getting to know his clients through an assessment and genuine conversation. Being fit in his definition begins with love. “I don’t want to know how many pounds you want to lose, I want to know how many grandkids you have,” Joey goes on, “I think the focus should be loving yourself because that’s where it starts. A lot of times [losing weight] has more to do with lifestyle and being able to spend time with friends and family.” He firmly believes finding out your why behind your fitness goals is key. After the assessment he focuses on mobility and stretching exercises. “My job is to make you move correctly first, then we go into body weight exercises, what we call functional movement. From there goals can go any direction, build strength, muscle, lose 5 lbs, diet, etc.” Joey cares about time with loved ones and mobility for the future. That’s what it’s all for. He offers one-on-one training, building home gyms and educating his clients on how to reach their fitness goals. “Nothing beats serving people,” Joey says. Connection, community and perspective are key to transformation in his eyes. His desire is to build authentic relationships, be vulnerable and grow together in that way. His goal in 2024 is to take action. “Don’t think about it. Don’t question how you’re going to do it. Take action,” he emphasizes.

"...finding out your why behind your fitness goals is key."

“

“Yoga is a practice that encourages self-acceptance and meeting yourself wherever you are on that day in that moment and leaving judgment at the door.”

In the heart of Parker, a new oasis invites locals to embark on a journey of self-discovery and well-being. Offering a holistic retreat for the mind, body and soul, Santosha, meaning a feeling of complete contentment, combines yoga and therapy in one space. Owned by the dedicated husband-and-wife team, John and Kelly Nason, Santosha Studios opened in September, and became a hub for those seeking balance and rejuvenation. “Yoga is a practice that encourages self-acceptance and meeting yourself wherever you are on that day in that moment and leaving judgment at the door,” Kelly observes. “There’s not much difference between therapy and yoga since yoga helps you release tension in your body, which helps with anxiety and depression. There’s so much overlap, it makes sense that this space is shared.” CONTINUED >

The yoga studio boasts advanced temperature and humidity control, promoting detoxification and healthy breathing, while a boutique offers local jewelry and body care products. Five therapy rooms set the tone for a warm, non-judgmental environment for specialized counseling. “There’s a reason when people leave yoga that they’re all beaming—everyone feels so good,” relays Kelly. Santosha Studios prioritizes accessibility, offering a variety of monthly memberships. Plus, each licensed therapist accepts insurance, aligning with Kelly’s mission for an authentic, community-focused experience in Parker. ”There’s a real need for mental health, and the Parker community needed some additional options for yoga,” says Kelly.

Owners John and Kelly Nason Two years ago Kelly Nason’s doctor diagnosed her with breast cancer, requiring a double mastectomy. Mom to two young boys, she wanted to recover as quickly as possible. As a licensed therapist and certified yoga teacher, the idea of providing a space that combines therapy and yoga dawned on her and Santosha Studios, a wellness space for the entire self, was born.

SMOOTHIE BOWLS

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try some of these simple recipes, or create your own combinations to give your health a boost.

New Years Financial Resolutions

Now that we’ve reached 2024, you might be thinking about some New Year’s resolutions, such as volunteering or learning a new language. But why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few to consider: For starters, if you can afford it, try to contribute more to your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement account. Next, think about ways you might be able to reduce your debts — it’s not always easy, but the less you owe, the greater your cash flow. Here’s another financial resolution: Try to build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. You can use your emergency fund to pay unexpected costs, such as home or car repairs. You might also want to avoid making emotional decisions, such as selling quality investments just because their price has dropped. And finally, review your financial goals and estate plans, especially if you’ve experienced changes in your family situation. You may not be able to tackle all these resolutions at one time, but if you can work at them throughout the year, you can potentially brighten your financial outlook in 2024 — and beyond.
