We hope this letter finds you hanging out by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed vitamin D.
As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, we find ourselves eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure.
We are lucky to experience four seasons—fall has our favorite flavors and scents, winter has its cozy charms and we can't deny the beauty of spring. But when the summer solstice rolls around, we’re more than ready for the long, languid days sitting by the pool or floating on a boat.
The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season in and around Parker. And even if summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our summer bucket list and curling up with a new favorite beach read. (P.S. Teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!)
Our family loves exploring new hiking trails, going for bike rides, swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking each summer. There's something about being in nature that feels so rejuvenating and refreshing.
Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of Parker and beyond this summer!
Here's to Summer Fun!

If so, consider investments that can help you achieve the future you’ve envisioned. For starters, think about investing in a retirement plan, such as an owner-only 401(k), a SEP IRA or a SIMPLE IRA. By contributing regularly to one of these accounts, you can avoid being entirely dependent on the sale of your business to pay for your retirement years.
You might also consider the pros and cons of investing in property. If you can afford to own your own building, you could avoid unpredictable rent increases. And it’s also important to invest in business interruption insurance to pay for your operating costs if you’re forced to shut down for a while. At the same time, you may want to build an emergency savings fund to cover unexpected costs, such as a large medical bill or a major home repair.
Finally, you’ll want to invest in a business succession plan, as well as in a team of professionals who can help you make decisions in the best interest of your business and you. Your business may well be a lifelong endeavor —somakesureyou’reinvestingwhateverittakestoearnalifetimeofbenefits.
Colorado is globally known for its abundance of outdoor activities and awe-inspiring mountain views. With 42 state parks, 58 peaks that exceed 14,000 feet, and thousands of trails, the Rocky Mountain state is the perfect place to experience active summer fun.
If you aren’t an avid hiker, traversing Colorado’s trails can be intimidating. It helps to have guidance from someone who’s been around the block a time or two. So, we chatted with Colorado native Sherryl Klosterman to get the scoop on the best trails—and a few hiking tips—to keep you safe and active all summer long.
For as long as she can remember, Sherryl’s summers have consisted of sunny afternoons full of hiking, camping, and fishing. When she was younger, Sherryl’s grandfather operated a Christian camp at the foot of Longs Peak and Twin Sisters Mountain. She had the privilege of living near this breathtaking property and leading hikes for the campers. Some of her fondest memories are from the 4th of July, when Sherryl, her family, and the neighbors would climb straight up the mountain to watch a spectacular firework display, and then scoot their way down in the dark.
After she got married and had her two children, Sherryl and her family moved to Parker. Despite the distance from the mountains, the family still found plenty of time to hike. Today, Sherryl’s primary hiking partners are her husband and two Weimaraners. She also enjoys a serene solo hike. When she’s not hiking, she works as the manager of The Exercise Coach on Hilltop Road. “I love to help our clients gain strength and improve their overall fitness so they can hike, bike and enjoy their favorite outdoor activities,” she emphasizes.
“Hiking restores your soul,” Sherryl says. “It’s so nice to get out in nature and away from the city. On a lot of the hikes, you don’t have a cell signal. So, you’re out there, enjoying nature and doing something physical, which is really good for you mentally as well as physically.”
Unique Views: Lake Haiyaha
Last summer, a rockslide turned this iconic lake in Rocky Mountain Park into a gorgeous shade of milky turquoise. Experts don’t know how long this chemical reaction will last, so put this four-mile hike at the top of your list this year.
Gratifying Challenge: Royal Arch
This heavily trafficked, classic Boulder trail is quite the workout. It’s scattered with loose rocks and challenging switchbacks. As a reward for the 1,400 feet you gain in elevation, you’ll get great views of the front range, flatirons, and, of course, the glorious arch at the top.
Black Powder Pass at the top of Boreas PassKid and Dog Friendly: Castlewood Canyon State Park
Only a 20-minute drive from Parker, this is an excellent option for families with small children and pups. There are several scenic spots to rest and over a dozen trails of varying lengths. Kids will be delighted by the homestead trail, which includes impressive ruins of an 1890s homestead and failed dam project.
All-Time Favorite: Silver Dollar and Murray Lake Trail
This hike is situated along the historic Guanella Pass and simultaneously offers a view of three different lakes. In July, the trail is alive with blooming wildflowers. It gives hikers ample opportunities to take a deep breath, capture a few photos, and enjoy the scenery that makes Colorado America’s number-one hiking destination.

Bring the Essentials
“
Pack your backpack lightly but efficiently. I carry trail mix, a flashlight, a jacket, sunscreen, bug spray, bear spray, a hat, sunglasses, and extra socks in case of stream crossings.”
Tell Someone Your Whereabouts
“If you’re hiking alone, always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Be sure you know your route, and carry bear spray just in case!”
Travel Smart
“Do your research beforehand and make sure your car can handle the journey. Most iconic Colorado hikes require a 4-wheel drive to get to the trail. You can take a shuttle to some spots inside Rocky Mountain National Park.”
“If your schedule can swing it, the ideal time to hike is on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. If you need to go on a weekend when it’s more crowded, be sure to leave early and finish by 1:00 pm (especially if your hike goes above the tree line.) This allows you to beat the crowds and afternoon thunderstorms!”

Colorado summers get dry and water restrictions can create tedious boundaries when planning and designing your dream garden and yard. It takes strategic effort to keep the grass green and the flowers luscious and healthy. That’s where John Van, president of Four Elements Landscape & Outdoor Living, comes in. John manages the company’s vision, quality, and footprint in the landscaping industry. He and his team have a lot of wisdom to share when it comes to creating and maintaining your yard and garden in anticipation of the Colorado heat.
“As a company, we are always reinventing ourselves based on the new trends, the changing climate and what’s friendly for the environment,” John says. As a full-service landscaping company, Four Elements takes care of landscaping, hardscaping, maintenance, electrical, and anything else needed to complete an outdoor living space. By taking ownership of every element in a project, they cut out the hassle of having multiple contractors. Their passion is to make your yard and garden an extension of your home.
“This summer, we are most excited about helping create outdoor spaces
where lasting memories can be created with families,” John shares. When approaching a new project, they take great care to identify your wish list, budget, and survey the property in regard to slopes, elevations, drainage, and impervious coverage. They even consider resale value as they draw up plans. Every detail is important. This includes picking out the best waterwise grasses and plants.
So, what is the best way to plan out your yard and garden? John suggests xeriscaping, a landscaping method developed especially for arid and semiarid climates that utilize water-conserving techniques. He also recommends automatic irrigation systems, carefully considering your trees, choosing drought-tolerant perennials, and incorporating hardscaping. He even mentions artificial grass as a viable option. For your garden, container gardening is a great consideration as well.
“Landscaping is very much an art,” John explains. “To create a beautiful design, there needs to be depth, texture, and colors to create an aesthetically pleasing space. For example, trees and plants of various heights, multi-tiered walls or patios of different shapes or materials, fireplaces,
fire pits, water features, and colorful flowers or bushes can really add some drama to your home.”
John says the best waterwise grasses and plants are blue fescue, blue avena, and fountain grass, as well as ground covers such as snow-in-summer, ice plants, creeping phlox, daylily, salvia, and yarrow. If you’re looking for more low-maintenance native plants, he advises toward the Colorado blue columbine, black-eyed susan, fringed sage, mountain mahogany, and rabbitbrush. And his favorite garden plant combination is serviceberry, dwarf mugo pine, feather reed grass, daylily, plus snow-insummer and veronica for ground covers.
“A person’s outdoor living space speaks a lot about their personality,” John says. “Social butterflies tend toward outdoors that mirror an indoor vibe. They have at least two couches, loads of cushions, and a table for eight with a range and minifridge close by. With a setup like this, there’s a pretty good chance you’re a born entertainer. A quieter soul may have more simple plantings (or none at all), and a quiet solitary spot to read. The crafty sort relishes an outdoor space that is full of clever furnishings built from scratch or upcycled.”No matter which setting speaks to who you are, there are many options for creating a unique yard and garden. Even as you proactively approach the dry bouts of summer, with the right grasses and plants you can enjoy your home and make memories that will last a lifetime in the comfort of your own backyard.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU OFFER CLIENTS TO HELP THEM AVOID SKIN DAMAGE WHILE IN THE COLORADO SUNSHINE?
Kate Messana, DO, FAOCD, FAAD, affectionately known as Dr. Kate, is co-owner of Elevated Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery Center in Parker. Parker City Lifestyle caught up with her to chat about summertime skin care—how to avoid sun damage, how to help repair it, when to get skin checkups and which products help promote sun safety.
I recommend an SPF of 30 or higher, applied to all exposed areas, with reapplication every two hours if you are actively out in the sun. Tolerability and [the] feel of the sunscreen are more important than active ingredients; if you don't like it, you won't put it on. Any sunscreen is better than none. Be extra careful if your shadow is shorter than you, as this means the sun is [at] its strongest. I also recommend UPF [ultraviolet protection factor] clothing that protects you from the sun because it’s easy to use and you don’t have to worry about reapplication.

Top tips for avoiding skin damage and obtaining and maintaining healthy skin
WHAT TREATMENTS DO YOU OFFER CLIENTS WITH PREVIOUS SKIN DAMAGE?
I recommend an appointment for a full-body skin exam to screen for skin cancers or to discuss sun damage concerns on any part of the body. I also offer cosmetic consultations to discuss the wide variety of aesthetic treatments we offer to improve the health of your skin.
WHAT SKIN DAMAGE/SYMPTOMS SHOULD COMPEL A PERSON TO SEE A DERMATOLOGIST?
Any lesion or lesions [that are] growing, changing color, bleeding, painful or [are] tender for more than a few weeks should be evaluated. It’s also a good idea to watch for textural changes like scaly spots or patches that look dry. I also see many people for aesthetic concerns like worsening wrinkles, skin laxity, dullness, dryness or excessive spots. These are all directly related to sun exposure and damage from the UV radiation from the sun.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD A PERSON COME IN FOR A SKIN SCAN? DOES THIS TIMEFRAME CHANGE WITH AGE?
The older you get, the higher the risk you have for developing a skin cancer, so I recommend an exam every 2–5 years as a youth/adolescent, and this interval decreases with age. By the age of 30, I recommend a skin exam yearly. Those with a history of multiple skin cancers may come even as often as every 3–6 months. Skin cancer, especially melanoma, is a cancer that can affect someone at any age. If someone has a changing mole, it should be evaluated no matter the person’s age.
WHAT SKIN CARE PRODUCTS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR SUMMERTIME?
I recommend vitamin C, vitamin A and many other products that can be used safely in the summer—along with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. I customize each person's skin care regimen based on several different factors, including age, sun exposure, goals and skin type.
Laser facials utilizing LaseMD Ultra for treating: skin laxity | fine lines/wrinkles | acne | hyperpigmentation texture | large pores | and much more
Combine with Morpheus 8 for a total skin solution.
Laser treatment for spider veins, red veins, angiomas, etc. Keralase hair restoration to treat thinning hair and multiple types of alopecia.

Electric bicycles, or e-bikes, seem to be everywhere these days, and it’s no wonder—with the cost of gasoline, environmental concerns, and consumer interest in health and wellness, e-bikes make it a little easier to get where you want to go in a clean and healthy way. Oh, and they’re a lot of fun.
ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PEDEGO ELECTRIC BICYCLESFountain Valley, California-based Pedego Electric Bicycles has been designing, manufacturing and selling e-bikes since 2008. They sell their bicycles through locally owned dealerships, with more than 230 in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Rick Crabtree co-owns seven Pedego dealerships with business partner Stephanie Lawrence, including three in Colorado—Fort Collins, Denver and the Southlands in Aurora.
ELECTRIC BICYCLES OPEN THE WORLD OF BIKING TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES
“We're a lot like a car dealership,” Rick says. “We have a service center. We have sales, of course. We offer test rides and rentals. And every bike comes with a five-year warranty, rim to rim, including the battery. And so, other than the occasional flat tire, if there's a defect or something came loose, we're going fix it for you.”
It’s hard to find that kind of service and support when buying an e-bike off the internet, which is why Rick says it’s important to have brick-and-mortar stores. “E-bikes aren’t cheap; they’re an investment, and you should be able to test-ride the different models and find the one that’s right for you,” Rick explains.
Rick discovered the fun of e-bikes when he rented one during a vacation. “It was just fabulous. Life-changing, really, because they really take the pain away from riding bikes.” The pain is taken away because of a battery that provides electric power when you’re riding over rough terrain, going uphill, or are just tired of pedaling. So you can use your own pedal power to move forward or switch to electric power and just enjoy the ride.
The electric boost allows a lot of people a new opportunity to get out and ride. “We all start to age, or maybe we’ve had some injuries,” Rick says. “Should you stop exercising? Should you stop loving the bicycle? No. These bicycles allow you to continue riding, instead of giving up the benefits of bicycling just because of age or an injury.”
When selecting an e-bike to purchase, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. How will you use it? To commute to work? For exercise? For fun? Are you a road cyclist or
Avoid traffic—and sweat—by biking to work on Pedago's City Commuter.
do you want to conquer mountain trails? Do you need a little extra stability or more battery power? Those questions and considerations are why Rick believes e-bikes should be purchased in a store. “We are e-bike enthusiasts with the knowledge to help you find the perfect bike. And we’ll be here long after your purchase to repair it and take care of it for you.”
Pedego offers several types of e-bikes, from on- and off-road models to a tandem and a tricycle. They also have lots of handy accessories, like phone holders, saddle bags, and carriers for pets, kids and groceries that they'll install for you. And just like a car dealership, they buy and sell used models and take trade-ins if your e-bike needs change or you’re ready to upgrade to a new model.
In the end, Rick wants all his customers to find the best electric bike, which he says is “the one that fits you best. It all comes down to the one that’s the most fun for you to ride. That’s what it’s all about.”
