A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION STARTS WITH AN EXPERIENCED, RELIABLE CONTRACTOR. HERE'S HOW TO FIND ONE.

As the lead designer and general contractor (respectively) at 5 Rings Construction, they've helped clients who have been burned by bad contractors. Through excellent service and clear communication, Sara and Lance aim to redeem those experiences. Now, they’re here to help you. Asking the right questions before hiring a contractor will mitigate risk and elevate your confidence. Here’s a list of 10 questions Sara and Lance recommend asking before you sign on the dotted line.

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE HIRING A CONTRACTOR 1. Do you have a reference list? Acquire a list of past customers and reach out to a few. If they were satisfied with their service, there’s a higher chance you will be. 2. Do you offer financing options? You don’t have to break the bank or stretch your credit limit to afford home renovations. Some contractors offer project financing for lower rates than personal or equity loans. For example, 5 Rings Construction offers financing through Redstone Bank and EnerBank USA. 3. How long have you been in business? The longer a contractor has been in business, the more reliable they are prone to be. Longevity in business lowers your chances of being ripped off by a shady contractor.

4. What is the pay schedule for the project? This industry lingo will make it sound like you know your stuff. A transparent pay schedule ensures that you and the contractor are on the same page about when payments are due. Pro-tip: Never pay for an entire project upfront! 5. Are you licensed and insured? People make mistakes, but you don’t want to be the one that has to pay for them. Let’s say that your handyman is patching a hole in the wall, and they accidentally puncture a water line. If they don’t have insurance, you are responsible for that cost. Never hire a contractor who doesn’t have updated licensure and insurance. 6. How will we deal with additional charges? When the project is underway, you may decide to do something differently. Perhaps you want to remove an additional wall and need to implement a change order. In such instances, you’ll want to know the pay schedule and relevant details for additional charges. 7. Will you be on site every day? Typically, contractors are not on site every day. It will give you peace of mind to know when people are supposed to be at your house and when they are waiting on materials or inspections. 8. What is the timeline for the project? For your sanity, setting time expectations up front is a smart idea. For instance, you don’t want to be out of a kitchen for four months! 9. How will my project be supervised? Every project has a point of contact. Knowing your project supervisor(s) will help you get answers quickly and avoid wasting time playing phone tag. 10. When can you start? After signing a contract, the last thing you want is to realize that your contractor can’t start for several months. Communication is critical to having a great experience with your contractor!

Perhaps you know Kurt and Angie Hughes; they’ve owned Parker-based Hughes Landscaping for more than 30 years. But you may not know the Hughes also own Pine Lane Nursery on Apache Drive in Parker. “Pine Lane Nursery was where we got our plants from,” Angie says. When the nursery came up for sale in 2010, Kurt and Angie bought it. Under Angie’s management, you might say the business has bloomed. Known for its incredible hanging baskets, Pine Lane Nursery is nine acres of floral nirvana, a place that delights gardeners—especially early in the planting season when everyone is done with

their stark winter landscapes and are itching to get their hands in the dirt. “Every year, we spend the profits basically improving this place, every year we do a little bit more, and we continue to add more greenhouses,” Angie says. “We grow a lot of our own perennials and annuals, and I think we're known far and wide for how beautiful our hanging baskets are.” A self-described “lazy gardener,” Angie is all about creating and maintaining a foliage-laden yard with minimal work and care. She’s a Colorado Certified Nursery Professional and says that having a garden CONTINUED >

that lasts from May to October is all about planting the right plants at the right time. “We don’t do full-fledged landscaping projects,” Angie says, “but we can help people design their beds. Just bring us pictures of your yard, and we can tell you which perennials or shrubs or trees to plant. And then we have crews that will plant them for you.” Inspired by customers who would bring their pots to the nursery to be properly planted, the nursery decided to start its Custom Container Program—instead of lugging pots to Pine Lane, the nursery will come to you to plant, fertilize, water, and maintain your container gardens. Kristy Psaltis has been in the gardening business for 10 years and is in charge of the program. “Creating custom containers has always been my favorite part of my job,” says Kristy. “People would come in and have all these ideas and then I get to implement them—I learn what kind of sun their yard gets, what colors they like, how tall they want the plants to be. Then I design their containers. It’s the fun stuff that I really enjoy doing.” “Kristy is really good at it,” says Angie. “And this is such a great idea because even though we’re happy to plant pots our customers bring to us, going to them allows us to do it on a much bigger scale. And it’s hard to bring the really big pots to us.” By signing up for this service, customers can make it completely custom for

their specific needs. If you want a truly maintenance-free container garden, Kristy and her team will take care of everything—from planting to watering and fertilizing to deadheading and trimming (or replacing) dead or spent flowers. If you just want Kristy to plant your pots and then take care of them from there, she can do that too. Or any combination of services. Kristy can also keep your pots beautifully filled year-round through Pine Lane’s Four Seasons Gardening Program. Starting with those cold-hardy plants in spring, she’ll add summer blooms like petunias and geraniums when the time is right, then replace them with fall plants like chrysanthemums. When the snow starts to fall and the holidays approach, Kristy can fill the pots with small evergreens and festive decor. “So we do both,” Angie continues. “We have people who prefer to bring their pots to us because we start them here with the little plants we get and grow them in our greenhouses so they’re full and beautiful by Mother's Day. Parker business owner Matt Gibb likes to stay busy. While working for a digital banking startup, Matt began searching for a side gig, he says, “to keep me busy. I like to have a lot on my plate.” He started researching franchising opportunities, and discovered a Canadian company called Spray-Net. “The CEO was on Dragon’s Den (the Canadian Version of Shark Tank). The franchise covers most of Canada, and in the last few years, they’ve started expanding into the States. I’m the first person in Colorado to own a Spray-Net franchise.”

With a background working in corporate America for Fortune 500 companies like Visa, Kaiser Permanente, and Lockheed Martin, Matt knows what it takes to run a successful business. “Right out of the gate, I was blown away with Spray-Net’s infrastructure, support, and vetting process. And it’s really a great product. I was kind of sold after that.” Spray-Net is a home improvement company that develops and produces its own paint specifically for cabinetry. Matt explains that it’s harder than paint from a hardware store. It’s also heat- and chip-resistant because it’s made to be in a kitchen. For a recent kitchen project, Matt changed dated cream cabinets with an antiqued finish into the popular two-tone look, with white upper cabinets and a dark, modern gray on the lower cabinetry—in four days. Homeowner Teri Schulte met Matt at the Castle Rock Home Show. “There were a lot of other companies that were offering the same kind of thing,” Teri says, “but when Matt showed me the finish and what he could do, I asked him to give me a bid.” CONTINUED >

“Everything is done with a spray,” Matt says. “We don’t use brushes or rollers, so there are no brush strokes; we provide a factory finish. Once people see that next to any other typical type of paint, it’s pretty apparent that the difference is in the finish. And then we warranty it for 15 years.” Teri says she’s really happy with the finished product and especially enjoyed working with Matt. “A lot of times when you hire a contractor, they don’t communicate with you very well. Matt contacted me several times to let me know what was going on and where we were in the process. He was always right on time, and during the process, he would tell me exactly what they were doing. I really appreciated that.” What started out as a way to stay busy is now Matt’s full-time gig. “I get to use all those skills I developed over the last 10 years. But I also get to meaningfully impact people’s lives. I get to create jobs for my crew, and I get to help people fall in love with their home again and save money while doing it.”

Embrace the need to get out of the house! Even though Colorado springs can be unpredictable (and snowy), we can always count on a few warm days to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, and loads of fun with these family activities.

PLANT A FLOWER OR VEGETABLE GARDEN. Gather up the kids, head to the nursery, and pick out flats of flowers or packets of vegetable seeds. When you get home, plan the arrangement and spacing of the plants. Then have everyone pitch in with digging and planting. To maintain your kids' interest in the garden, set up a watering schedule, and have everyone take turns throughout the season.

VISIT A STATE OR NATIONAL PARK. Forests and parks come alive in the spring. Not only does the greenery begin to fill in, but wildlife abounds—it's the perfect time of year for a nature hike. Be sure to take along your binoculars and a camera to capture newly blossomed plants, animals, and birds.

FLY A KITE. A breezy spring day is perfect for flying kites. For even more fun, order a kite kit in advance that your family build together. Then, check out Youtube videos on how to fly a kite before you head out to ensure your adventure is a success.

GO GARAGE SALING. Spring is when rummage sales get into full swing. So go on a treasure hunt for great buys and reduce our imprint on the planet by buying used. Before you head out, check your local newspaper, Nextdoor, and Craigslist for garage sale listings. Then plan your route to make the most of your outing.

MAKE A YARD ORNAMENT. Gather up your family to brainstorm a fun project to liven up your yard or landscape. Here are a few ideas to get you started: a unique birdhouse, colorful bird feeder, artistically painted planter, mosaic walkway or welcome sign, fun sculpture, or musical wind chimes. Whatever you come up with, you can likely find design ideas, instructions, or kits online.

GO ON A PICNIC. Pack some finger foods like sandwiches, cheese sticks, veggies and dip, fruit, cookies, and beverages. Then head to the park to enjoy some play, relaxation, and grub.

BUILD A FORT. If you have a stash of construction materials lying around, this is an excellent way to put it to use. Another option is to buy several sections of privacy fencing for prebuilt walls for your fort. There are many ways to build an awesome hideout. So search online for easy, low-cost ideas. CONTINUED >

PLAY DISC GOLF. These courses have popped up in parks everywhere and are fun for all ages. Just head to your nearby sporting goods store and pick up a few discs before you go.

GO ON A SCAVENGER HUNT. Make a list of items that are found outdoors, such as an oak leaf, clover, piece of trash, chunk of gravel, dandelion, pop can, speckled rock, wildflower, and so forth. Before heading out for the hunt, set a time limit and any safety rules. Then split up into two teams and see who can bring home the most items on the list.

SET UP A LEMONADE STAND. For the entrepreneurial family, this is a fun way to spend a spring day. Bake some cookies or brownies, make some lemonade, and design colorful "Cookies & Lemonade" signs. Then hang the posters at nearby corners and main intersections. Better yet, take advantage of the extra traffic when a neighbor holds a yard sale.

GO FOR A PEDDLE. Whether it's a ride through your neighborhood or on a paved trail system, a bike ride is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and take in all the sights of spring.

HOLD A GARAGE OR TOY SALE. Have your kids clean out their old toys and outgrown clothes. Then offer them a portion or all of the proceeds for holding or helping with the sale. Be sure to advertise it online and post yard sale signs on nearby corners and your main intersection.

ATTEND A SOCCER OR BASEBALL GAME. Nothing says "it's spring" like a baseball or soccer game. Get some tickets to a pro baseball game, or check the game schedule for your kids' school. Before you go, be sure to dress in the colors of your favorite team.

TAKE A MOUNTAIN DRIVE. Spring is the perfect time of year to roll down the windows and take a scenic cruise. Kick back, put on some happy music, and enjoy the blue skies, budding trees, and snowcapped peaks.

Like any large purchase, having a knowledgeable local expert to help you make an informed decision is key. The first step is setting up a consultation to see if a solar system is right for you and your home. “We want to make it as easy as possible to become a power owner and not a power renter,” says Duane Amado with Mile High Solar. Investing in a residential solar system can be compared to purchasing a home when you have been renting. Rising electric costs have been a major topic of conversation, and rates typically rise 4% - 12% each year. Installing a solar system will lower your electric bill, avoid increasing costs of electricity, and increase the value of your home. The panels themselves are very durable and require little maintenance. Local electric companies might offer incentives, and two federal programs can lower the initial cost of installation. The Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable

Energy Equipment prevents purchasers of solar systems from having to pay sales tax. Net metering allows homeowners to get credit for excess solar that is generated and “banked” during summer months and then can be used on cloudy winter days, for example. The Property Tax Exemption for Residential Renewal Energy Equipment means that homeowners won’t have to pay property tax on the increased value of a home as a result of installing a solar system. The federal incentive can reduce your federal tax bill by up to 30% depending on when the solar system was or is installed. A local expert can guide you through what permits are needed, getting approval from your HOA, and the best type of panels for your home. A company that offers the best equipment and panels and also has them in stock is also something to look for so installation can take place in a timely manner. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
