LIFESTYLE LETTER

LOVE LOCAL

February 2023 PUBLISHER S

Joan Dameron | joan.dameron@citylifestyle.com Jeni Fleck | jeni.fleck@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

This time of year we can be a little bit torn. We might find ourselves torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. February and art go hand in hand too. This is the perfect month to attend a theater production, concert, or class. Parker’s very own PACE Center offers an array of amazing performances and classes. Musicals are so much fun and one of our family’s favorites! Douglas County Libraries also offer classes and camps for all ages, as well as the perfect place to escape this time of year. While we teeter between the chill of January winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community—but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Fika, Coffee Cabin or Kunjani World Coffeehouse and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Purgatory Winery or The Wine and Barrel and some chocolate from Kilwins Chocolates and Ice Cream and indulge on a movie night in. You can also pick up Colorado chocolates at Nest Salon and Boutique, The LOCAL, Niche & Co and 39 North Co. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before.

business monthly A round-up of exciting news from local businesses.

Douglas County Libraries Partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Parker Youth Commission seeking businesses to offer internships

Douglas County Libraries Partner with OLLI to Offer Lifelong Learning

Douglas County Libraries is sending books to children in Douglas County in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Through the Imagination Library, children from birth to age five receive a free, age-appropriate book each month, sent straight to their home, that they get to keep. Registration is required, and every child in a family may participate and receive their own books when each child is registered individually. DCL.org/imagination-library for details.

The newly formed Parker Youth Commission is looking for local businesses willing to join their internship program. Businesses that would like to participate will provide internships for students looking for experience in that particular industry. Internship length and purpose can be determined by the business. Approved by the Parker Town Council last May, the high school members have the willingness to serve the youth and Parker community. If interested, please email Landon Schnell at schnelllandon@gmail.com

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Denver (OLLI at DU) provides relaxed, interactive learning, without grades or exams, to inquiring adults ages 50 and better. DCL partners with OLLI to provide these classes to our community as part of our Ageless suite of services for lifelong learners. Adults 50 and over are encouraged to register for four-week noncredit courses, with no assignments or grades—because curiosity never retires! Various dates and locations.

THE SCULPTING LIFE Four Colorado artists you should know about

For these four Colorado artists—Richard Pankratz, Laurel Peterson Gregory, Reno Carollo, and Melissa J. Cooper—sculpting is a way of life. From nature and wildlife to a lifelong study of the human form, the work they create is a gift for all to enjoy. “It’s a 24/7 job,” Reno says. “And so fun to do.”

RICHARD PANKRATZ Monument Artist Richard Pankratz says he likes “the way form interacts with space and derives meaning from the intention of the artist.” “It has been a lifetime commitment to the unique that is gaining strength in me as society careens along and into this big box, mass-produced, sterile, and technologically precise millennium,” Richard says. “As the pressures and influences of modern existence continue to press upon and modify essential characteristics of fundamental humanity, art for me is becoming even more essentially relevant.” Richard describes his sculpture Happy Dance (shown) as a “heartfelt thank you to all who have joined me in my happy dances. It is a celebration of all of life’s happy dances.” The work is on permanent display at the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland. Richard Pankratz’s work can be found at Hunter Wolff Gallery, Colorado Springs; Exposures International Gallery of Fine Art, Sedona, AZ; and Ramey Fine Art, Palm Desert, CA. richardpankratz.com Happy Dance, installed in Benson Sculpture Park, Loveland, in 2015.

LAUREL PETERSON GREGORY Sedalia

Rambunction, 15.75”h × 7.75”w × 5”d, Edition of 77

Born in Stamford, CT, Laurel Peterson Gregory wandered from coast to coast before settling in Colorado in the 1970s. Her work is highly stylized, grounded by her early training with classic masters in anatomy, form, and motion. The result is a unique application of curves and planes that invites the viewer deep into each piece’s story. Laurel believes “you have to know the rules to break the rules.” Her work has been collected around the world and can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public installations. Rambunction (shown) “was a blast to sculpt once I figured out how to make the armature,” Laurel says. It’s just total play and friendly mayhem." Locally, she has large work in the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland and Running Fox Park in Greenwood Village. Selections of her work can be seen at Smith Klein Gallery, Boulder; Renee Taylor Gallery, Sedona, AZ; and Cobalt Gallery, Tubac, AZ. laurelpetersongregory.com CONTINUED >

RENO CAROLLO Aurora

In Motion, 18"x 7" x 5".

Sculptor and goldsmith Reno Carollo is a Colorado native who creates sculptures using the Abstract Figurative Manifesto. By making a commitment to the human figure, Reno’s creativity combines new figures with statements of the human condition. “I believe there are two parts to the creative process,” Reno says. “The first is the vision, concept, or idea you have inside of you, based on life experiences or an insight or quest you have participated in. The second is expressing that vision in a material or medium.” His bronze piece, In Motion (shown) “is a figure captured moving in space,” Reno says. “What motion frozen might look like.” His work can be found at Art Design Consultants, Cincinnati, OH; and Gallery V, Overland Park, KS. His leased public art can be seen at Sculpture Walk, Sioux Falls, SD; Partner Sculpture Walk, Vermillion, SD, and Art Around Town, Carbondale. Born and raised in Colorado, Melissa J. Cooper has a great appreciation of wildlife and art. The daughter of a china painter and a sculptor, Melissa has a natural ability to capture the spirit of life and emotion in each of her sculptures and refers to her style as realistic impressionism. Devoted to her faith and family, Melissa says, “I give the Lord Jesus thanks for the gifts and abilities He has given me.” Created in 2022, Plentiful (shown) depicts a Western Tanager perched on a circular vase covered in oak leaves and branches. Melissa’s work is displayed in numerous galleries and in private and public collections in the U.S. and around the world. Currently, her sculptures can be seen at Broadmoor Gallery, Colorado Springs; Breckenridge Gallery, Breckenridge; and Bronze Coast Gallery, Cannon Beach, OR. C R E AT I N G A JOB YOU LOVE ARTICLE BY HANNAH ECHOLS GRIESER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ZAMARRON DESIGNS

Denae Zamarron of Zamarron Designs shows how a fun hobby can turn into a serious business

We all want to do what we love, but we don’t always create the space for it. Even fewer of us find a way to turn our creative passions into a career. Through hard work and ingenuity, Denae Zamarron did just that. She started Zamarron Designs in 2019 as a way to earn some extra cash as a stay-at-home mom. Since then, the company has grown into a bustling business serving the south Denver community and beyond with custom wood signs, DIY kits, and creative events. With a professional artist for a mom and a CPA for a dad, both creativity and business were championed in Denae’s childhood home. She also had three uncles who were professional woodworkers. As a kid, she watched in awe as they crafted flawless furniture. Denae adopted the craft and put her spin on it. “I call myself the lazy woodworker. I took a bit of the artistic side and a little of the woodworking side and put them together,” Denae says. “Now I have three lasers, a CNC machine, and I make 3D engraved and acrylic signs, as well as tumblers.” At first, Denae created signs as a way to gather with friends and craft together. However, when the pandemic hit in 2020, Denae found an even greater need for fun, at-home activities. She sold DIY kits that

24

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | SHOPPI NG

included paint and wood signs for people to complete at home with their loved ones. The most popular kit was a simple square piece of wood and vinyl that said, “When the world shut down, we learned how to be together.” Families were instructed to place their handprints on the sign as a finishing touch. Now that events are back, Zamarron Designs hosts monthly Make-N-Takes at Two22 Brew in Centennial and Purgatory Cellars in Parker. She provides all of the supplies people need to create personalized signs, door hangers, or charcuterie boards. “Events are one of my favorite parts of what I do,” Denae says. “I meet amazing people who paint gorgeous things. It just blows my mind. You really get to see everyone’s personalities, and it shows that everyone can be creative.” In addition, Zamarron Designs makes interchangeable signs that people can switch out with the seasons. Denae provides different inserts that customers can either paint themselves or order pre-made, allowing their decor to move seamlessly from summer vibes to Christmas cheer. In addition, she takes custom orders for individuals and businesses alike.

ADVICE FROM DENAE ZAMARRON

How to Convert Your Creative Hobby Into a Business Denae and her husband transformed Zamarron Designs from a hobby to a side hustle, and then from a side hustle to a main hustle. Here are a few of the practices that helped them succeed.

1

| Create the Space

Entrepreneurship takes time and intention. Create the space to practice your craft, both physically and figuratively. I work on Zamarron Designs from my garage during “in-between” life. Between drop-off and pick-up with my three kids, I’m at the schools three times a day. I find pockets of time when they’re away or asleep to really focus on my business.

2 | Collaborate With Your Community Having support from your community is crucial for business success! Leverage the power of online Facebook groups and find other local makers you can learn from. It’s also helpful to find people who you can share resources with. I am friends with a few guys in the area who also use lasers for work, so we can lean on each other if our equipment happens to fail.

3

| Control Your Calendar

If you want to scale from a hobby to a business, knowing when to say no and when to say yes is a crucial skill. As creative people, we enjoy what we do and often want to say yes to every opportunity that comes our way. However, knowing your limitations and homing in on your niche will help you succeed (and avoid burnout!) I also recommend setting boundaries around personal and family time, as the impulse to work on your business all the time is a real temptation. Learn more about Zamarron Designs and explore the catalog at zamarrondesigns.com. For specific order inquiries, email Denae at info@zamarrondesigns.com FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Change Your Mindset

Hypnotherapist Angie Egan explains how hypnotherapy can help change bad habits and conquer fears ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

28

I NSP IR E D BY | WEL L NESS

Hypnosis tends to get a bad rap. The word conjures up old ideas about magic tricks and mind control. And we’ve all heard about a swinging pocket watch followed by the words, “You’re getting sleepy....” But as Parker-based hypnotherapist Angie Egan explains, this results-driven therapy doesn’t deserve its less-than-stellar reputation.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU GOT INTO THIS PROFESSION. I was a student of hypnosis long before I was a teacher. I used HypnoBirthing to birth my children. I trained using self-hypnosis and had a really wonderful birth experience, so I knew I was going to do it again. Then my instructor said, “You know, you should teach this.” So I became certified to teach HypnoBirthing right before my son was born in 2008. And that’s what started me in the industry. And I loved it. I loved working with moms who were choosing to do an alternative, non-medicated birthing method. I taught for nine years, but within about five years I knew I wanted to really go more into the hypnosis side, not just the birthing side. I started seeing how people were changing in other ways. They weren’t just preparing for their births; they were getting more confidence. They were setting boundaries. And I thought, gosh, if this can help with birthing, what else could it help with? So that’s what really got me into the industry.

WHAT CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HAVE? I first trained with Marie Mongan, who developed the HypnoBirthing method. It’s the most famous hypnosis program for birth in the world. She’s no longer with us, but she was amazing.

And then, about five years later, I became certified for general hypnotherapy through the National Guild of Hypnotists. I’m state licensed and insured and became board certified in 2022. I think that’s an important thing for people to know I have the credentials behind the sign.

DO YOU HAVE AN OFFICE IN PARKER? I do. It’s at 11479 Pine Drive, right across from the Goddard School.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON CONCERNS OR HELP THAT CLIENTS COME TO YOU FOR? Most people come to me for habit change. The most common ones would be tobacco cessation or weight loss, but I also work with a lot of people to overcome fears, like the fear of flying or public speaking. Sleeping issues are really common, as are struggles with self-confidence.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU LOOK AT IT FROM A WIDER LENS—OVERALL SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-CONTROL. Absolutely. It’s confidence building. It’s habit-changing in your subconscious mind. So whatever habit we’ve developed, and we’ve gotten used to, we tend to reinforce that negative mindset. Like, if someone has to speak publicly, they might think, “I’m going to go up there and it will be terrible. Nobody will like what I say.” Hypnotherapy helps shifts those thoughts to be more positive. And I don’t mean “fake it till you make it.” I really don’t care for that idiom, because it’s not faking it, it’s believing it till you do it. You’re believing it’s going to happen just before it happens— but it’s a belief, not a hope.

HOW DOES A TYPICAL SESSION GO? It starts when a client calls me with a concern and asks if I can help. If it’s, say, a sleep issue,

I’ll do some discovery work about what’s been going on, and what they’ve done to try to fix it. Interestingly, it doesn’t matter how long the issue has been going on—it could be lifelong, a few years, or a few months. As long as they have the motivation for it to be different, I can work with them. If they’re saying, “I want to sleep better, but I don’t want to change anything about my life,” I can’t help with that. During a client’s first appointment, I talk through what they want to accomplish, doing what I call an intuitive session. I don’t have any stock scripts; all my ideas and suggestions come from the conversation I have with my client. That way, it resonates more deeply with them. Because if I say, “Okay, you’re going to sleep eight hours a night,” but maybe they really only sleep six or seven hours. Or they like to stay up late and sleep in or they want to go to bed early and get up early. So everything that I say comes from their specific desire, their choice. That conversation takes about 25–30 minutes, and then I guide them into a hypnotic state. And that piece involves body relaxation, mental relaxation, and then suggestions. And then when they emerge—because hypnosis is not sleep, they do not “wake up”— they emerge from their hypnotic state. Then I give them their follow-up instructions to reinforce their practice.

HOW MANY TIMES, GENERALLY, WOULD SOMEONE SEE YOU AND THEY FELT THEY HAVE MADE A POSITIVE CHANGE IN THEIR HABITS? My goal is that even after the first session the client will notice some shifts and changes immediately. It doesn’t mean the entirety of the issue is fixed. For most clients, I see them

30

I NSP IR E D BY | WEL L NESS

somewhere between three and six sessions. It’s not a forever modality. It’s not like traditional behavioral therapy, as I don’t need to know much about the “why” behind the issue you want to address. If you’re coming in, let’s say, for a car accident or trauma or something like that, we can discuss it a little bit, or we can discuss it not at all. There’s so much work that’s done within the own client’s mind, and we can release that, so I don’t have to know everything about it. That’s really powerful because I teach people how to use hypnosis so they can keep improving and reinforcing their success without being tied to in-office sessions.

ARE YOU SAYING THAT THEY LEARN HOW TO HYPNOTIZE THEMSELVES? Exactly! I want my clients to know how to hypnotize themselves. Which again, makes me a little different. I don’t want people to think it’s me somehow controlling their minds, which is a big misconception about hypnosis. I want them to understand it’s them allowing themselves to go into a hypnotic state. And actually, we spend seven out of every 90 minutes in self-hypnosis. When we’re driving a familiar road, or we’re reading, or we’re doing our makeup and kind of lost in our head, those are all levels of self-hypnosis.

SPEAKING OF MISCONCEPTIONS, WHAT OTHERS WOULD YOU LIKE TO DEBUNK? SWINGING POCKET WATCHES? MIND CONTROL? The pocket watch thing is huge. Yes, I have a pendulum, but I don’t use it; I pull it out kind of as a joke and people get a kick out of that. The biggest misconception is that hypnosis is mind control. It’s absolutely not—it’s about getting a deep part of your mind to

work better for you. I am more like a coach and a guide, who will show you the process of how to use what you’re already walking around with. And once that happens, you automatically begin tapping into your subconscious mind more often. So the first thing is that it’s not mind control. It is a modality for clients who want it to work. People think they go to sleep, and then I say these magic words, and then they come out changed. Hypnosis is actually the theta brain state. It’s the state where you’re not quite asleep and not quite awake. It’s that in-between state when your subconscious awareness is really strong.

It’s similar to meditation in that you’re doing body relaxation and mental relaxation, but the focus of meditation is really just openness and flow. Hypnotic focus is for a very specific result, so if it’s something like sleeping better, the focus might be suggestions like, “The moment your head touches your pillow, you instantly and easily fall right to sleep” or “Your bed is your cocoon of safety and comfort.” Meditation is about being open, whereas hypnosis has intention. Elevate Your Skin Care Routine ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ELEVATED DERMATOLOGY

When she was in middle school, Taylor Douthitt would watch Extreme Makeover and The Swan with her mother. “I was struck by the substantial impact plastic surgeons could have on the lives of their patients by giving them the self-confidence to live their lives as they always dreamed,” Taylor says. “I realized that this incredible form of medicine was one I needed to practice.” After graduating from the University of Florida, Taylor attended graduate school to become a physician assistant. She graduated with a master’s degree in clinical medical science, then began training as an aesthetic injector. Last year, in her fifth year of practicing medical aesthetics, Taylor became part of the team at Elevated Dermatology in Parker, specializing in aesthetic injectables. “Dr. Chris and Dr. Kate Messana have built an incredible practice centered on evidence-based medicine, compassion, and a drive to give the highest level of care possible,” Taylor says. “The values of Dr. Kate, head of the cosmetic branch of Elevated Dermatology, aligned with mine in such a symbiotic way. I was immediately drawn to the practice and knew I had to join. Dr. Kate’s knowledge of lasers and light therapy drew me to the practice as well, as I firmly believe they are an integral part of both aging gracefully and anti-aging.” Taylor believes skincare and aesthetics should center around helping people feel confident in their own skin as well as achieving natural results delivered with a gentle touch. “Neither needs to be complicated, so finding the right aesthetic practitioner who aligns with your values is the best way to get the results you’re looking for,” Taylor says. “My philosophy revolves around using a multi-directional approach to anti-aging. For example, a laser session and a Sculptra session per year, as well as a solid daily skincare regimen, is a great base regimen to either stick with or build from.”

But what does a “solid daily skincare regimen” mean? “There is a difference between dermatologist-recommended skincare and influencer-recommended skincare,” Taylor warns. “Experts are experts for a reason, and simply using Google to make ‘informed’ decisions may work for some, but not all. It is important to learn from reliable, verifiable sources. There is a lot of amazing non-medical-grade skincare out there, and I use numerous products; however, there are also a lot of scams that are taking your money and potentially hurting you and your skin.” Taylor says there is a common misconception that professional skincare is overly irritating and most people can’t tolerate it. “Yes, ingredients like tretinoin can be irritating to some skin types, but there are ways of improving tolerance for most people,” Taylor explains. For example, she advises making sure skincare products are used properly, such as using a pea-size amount on completely dry skin and increasing hydrators to compensate for the drying effect. “Tretinoin should also be gradually incorporated into your skincare routine and not used with other active ingredients in the beginning to improve tolerance,” Taylor adds. It’s probably no surprise that the most common concern Taylor hears from her patients is the aging process and how it is affecting their appearance over time—after all, we all want to look our best. “It can be overwhelming and disconcerting to approach anti-aging due to the sheer volume of products, treatments, and information currently available,” Taylor says. “There are a few staple treatments that can be incorporated over time to age gracefully, and I am happy to tailor those to my patient’s needs. Dr. Kate and I agree the best anti-aging injectable is Sculptra, which causes your body to build collagen that is lost at around 1–2 percent each year. This product

Sticker pads are applied to the cheeks and forehead, which target the muscles used for browlift and facelift procedures, to cause a lifting and tightening effect through the lower face and brow. Highlands Ranch Native Ingrid Andress Talks About Her Songwriter-Turned-Artist Journey, Touring With Superstar Keith Urban, And Her Road to Success

38

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE

Ingrid Andress is on top of the world, even when she’s not quite sure where she is. The 3-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter originally from Highlands Ranch spent the past several months on the road, opening for country superstar Keith Urban on his “The Speed of Now’’ North American tour. On Halloween, she couldn’t contain her pinch-me shock on Insta at being invited to open for rock ’n’ roll icon Stevie Nicks in Huntsville, AL. And in November, Ingrid earned a fourth Grammy nomination, this time for “Wishful Drinking,” a song that Ingrid co-wrote and appears on her sophomore album “Good Person.” The song, performed by Ingrid and Sam Hunt (yep, that’s right) hit No. 1 on the country charts the same month. Life has been good. “Manifesting” is how the 2009 Rock Canyon High School graduate describes her current zero-to-60 road to success. She’s turning dreams into reality. “It’s been a whirlwind and also has felt like a lifetime,” Ingrid says. Her first album, “Lady Like,” was released in March 2020, just as the pandemic shut down the world, which made touring to support her album impossible. And what an incredible debut. “Lady Like” garnered three Grammy nominations and turned heads on the country music scene. She’d already made a name for herself as a songwriter, co-writing for tracks recorded by Hunt, Alicia Keys, Charli XCX, and Bebe Rexha, among others. Ingrid Andress grew up in Highlands Ranch, and her mom has said she was always performing, pretending to be Snow White or talking to ladybugs — and always singing. Ingrid’s dad, Brad Andress, was the strength and conditioning coach for the Colorado Rockies and they traveled frequently for his work. In Boston to see the Rockies play the Red Sox during the 2007 World Series, Ingrid and her family walked past a building with music spilling out of its open doors from a student jam session. That building, she discovered, was part of the renowned Berklee College of Music, and that was a turning point in her life. She came home, quit sports (volleyball, soccer and track, if you’re

keeping score) and threw herself into performing, joining every choir and musical theater production she could manage. “I’m a very headstrong person. Once I decided that that’s where I wanted to go, nothing would get in my way,” Ingrid says. Always a sucker for the storytelling aspect of music — there’s just something about the way life experiences make all of us feel — Ingrid focused on songwriting at Berklee and afterward, moved to Nashville, waited a lot of tables, and focused on honing her craft. That’s where she landed her publishing deal. “You’re not born a good songwriter,” Ingrid says. “You have to practice writing, network with other songwriters, practice your songs on the public. It can be a long process.” It took Ingrid a few years to realize she couldn’t bear to have someone else lend voice to her songs, which oftentimes came out of deeply personal heartache, and she

40

was ready to front her own work. “Lady Like” was her salvo. “I just thought I was a songwriter. I thought I had too many opinions to be an artist. I wasn’t hearing people singing about things I was singing and writing about,” Ingrid says. Her Colorado roots are all over her lyrics, from “Blue’s” “Thought I knew just what to call the color of the Colorado sky, but looking in your eyes, It’s like seeing blue for the first time.” Or in the multi-platinum No. 1 single “More Hearts than Mine”: “I can’t wait to show you where I grew up, Walk you ‘round the foothills of my town.” Ingrid has been in full tour mode, hanging out with her band — “We’re good friends” — and loving being able to see the whole country. Success for her is seeing more and more people sing her songs during shows.

“It feels like you are all agreeing that you feel whatever is in the song. You’re all sort of coming together and saying ‘I’ve felt this’ and as a songwriter that’s your goal, to show your feelings and put those out into the world.” Right now, Ingrid is basking in the success of two critically acclaimed albums and the world that has opened for her. Expect to hear more about her in 2023, including her own headlining tour with a European leg. “Definitely being on stage playing music is one of the happiest places for me. I do feel very in my element, now that I’ve embraced it. I feel a lot of times the world is showing you signs, this is your purpose, and if we aren’t paying attention, we miss it.” Follow Ingrid on Instagram @ingridandress or hear more at ingridandress.com.

8 WAYS T O O R G A N I Z E A N D I N J E C T S T Y L E I N T O YO U R S PAC E

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our eight tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.

44

H OM E U P DAT E | STY L E + BE AUTY

A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

01

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY

ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR

02

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE

03

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION

04

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

05

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

UPGR ADED HA NGERS 46

H OM E U P DAT E | STY L E + BE AUTY

06

BAG & SHOE STOR AGE

Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

07

HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small. FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
