In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. Our cover photo by staff photographer Abby Watkins portrays the legacy that fallen state trooper Cody Donahue left behind when he lost his life in the line of duty. His two children, his sister's, and his nephew's and nieces' hands are in this photo and remind us that even in the darkest times we can give thanks and remember those that have made a difference in our lives. This month we salute our veterans and all of the front-line and first responders that make Parker a better place. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our town the vibrant community that it is. RITCHIE JONES O W N E R /C E O O F T H E G R I T T Y Ritchie Jones makes it his mission to give back to his community through his mobile auto detailing business, The Gritty. As a veteran, Ritchie is committed to helping those in need. “Our philanthropy originated from simply wanting to offer assistance to less fortunate families and individuals,” he shares. And in an effort to live up to its motto—Solutions that fit your lifestyle—The Gritty aims to pay it forward whenever possible. For example The Gritty helped a single mom who needed her car detailed but couldn’t afford a deep cleaning. The Gritty did the job anyway! “Not only was she surprised,” Ritchie recalls, “but she was very thankful—and very emotional behind our gesture.” Ritchie believes the keys to helping those in need are to show them respect, using tact and professionalism, while also maintaining a high quality of service. “Tight-knit communities thrive on trust, reliability, and being relatable,” he says. “Reliability is the cornerstone of our business; a community needs to know that our business will be punctual, prepared to execute the services requested, and . . . easily contacted with clear, concise communication.” When choosing which community groups or causes to support, Ritchie says that all come from “great minds and honest origins.” But it’s the values, goals, and ideals that differ, he suggests. “We need to investigate a group’s core values from inception

to meeting to discovering if our business is a good fit. And, most importantly, if they’re excited to have us as a resource.” One organization excited to partner with The Gritty is Parker-based Be One of the Good Ones. “This organization actually reached out to our business in an effort to help in charitable efforts with struggling families,” shares Ritchie. “So, a few major charity events are happening soon, and we are going to provide free detailing services at these events. We’re very excited to introduce our mobile detailing business to the Parker community. We’ve quickly realized that in order for us to thrive and grow for years to come, we must be a reliable resource, a pillar to the community.” Ritchie’s advice for other entrepreneurs looking to contribute? “Develop a sustainable core of values, stick by your mission statement, and find community outreach groups/programs that fit your business model,” he says. “And make sure that your business can provide a solution or assist with a positive outcome that can garner immediate results, which has a noticeable impact on the community. MIKE & SUSAN BERTOCCHI O W N E R S O F K I LW I N S C H O C O L AT E S AND ICE CREAM Susan and Mike Bertocchi’s journey to Parker, Colorado began in 2007 when they traded the bustling streets of New York City for the charm of a small town. “We moved, not knowing what to expect,” says Susan. But Parker welcomed them with open arms, and in return, Mike and Susan made it their mission to be a force for good in Parker. “We have owned a number of businesses here,” shares Susan, “and each one has been successful.” Today, the Bertocchis own Kilwins Chocolates and Ice Cream in Parker, and Susan says they couldn’t be happier. “Parker is a very generous community,” Susan says. “We see where there is a need and seek ways to fill [it]. That’s not something that only our business does. I’ve seen many businesses and non-profit organizations do this. Seeking out ways to help our community is the least we could do to return the many ways we have been blessed by moving here.” Recently Kilwins was asked to host a school supply drive with Be The Good Ones. “We said yes without hesitation,” shares Susan. “Alex parked his Jeep outside of Kilwins, and the Jeep overflowed with school supplies. It was truly a sight to see! I got so emotional because my heart was warmed by such generosity. People came from Parker and neighboring communities, in the pouring rain, to fill the van. I can’t imagine how many teachers and students were helped that day.” Kilwins also partners with Parker Task Force, where Susan volunteered as a client advocate. “I know the way that place works,” she says, “and I know they are good stewards of the donations they receive. At Parker Task Force, they truly value and serve our seniors (65+) . . . I will never say no to our seniors. They are valued and an integral part of our community.” Parker events like the Parker Hometown Carriage Parade and the Brewfest are also supported by Kilwins. “That’s just the way it’s done,” CONTINUED >

shares Susan. “And one business or organization can’t do it all. We need to lean on each other. Look around Parker. You will see the efforts of everyone who cares about our beautiful town.” For those looking to give back, Susan suggests networking with local small businesses and organizations. “If you love to help those in need, seek out one of our food banks,” she advises, “and offer your team to collect food at a food drive. MEGHAN MITCHELL & MADISON MITCHELL S I S T E R – F O U N D E R S O F D E JA B R E W For the owners of Deja Brew in Parker, their philanthropic journey to making a positive community impact began with a heartfelt response to a crisis thousands of miles away. When wildfires ravaged Maui, the Mitchell sisters felt a deep connection to a local coffee business there, and they were moved to help in any way they could. “We felt motivated to help our fellow baristas and friends who are owners of a local coffee business in Maui after the tragic fires started and they lost everything,” says Meghan. “When we saw the reports, we thought [that] we would wish . . . someone would help us in the same way to support us as we navigated through an unexpected and challenging situation.” This act of compassion set the stage for a remarkable journey of community involvement for Madison and Meghan, which continues to reflect the core values that make Deja Brew a beloved establishment in Parker. “We are a very community-centered shop,” Meghan expresses. “We try to create personal friendships with the customers and locals who are in our small little local shop and provide something that is consistent for them to continue to return to,” says Meghan. “We have built quite the ‘Deja Family,’ and that is what, in return, helped us be able to give back and donate to our friends in Maui. Our customers really rallied and helped us pull off a great donation of $1,250 in the matter of four days’ time.” Because they run a small, newer business, Meghan and Madison are selective when donating their time, efforts, and money. “Our staff joins together to collaborate and brainstorm where and how we would like to donate back to the community,” explains Meghan. “We all value different groups or people or causes, as individuals, so it helps to be a part of a group that comes together to support our community. We also try our best to support our fellow small businesses that support us.” When considering philanthropy, the sisters suggest seeking opportunities you feel passionate about. SHAWN JOHNSON O W N E R O F O R A N G E T H E O RY F I T N E S S PA R K E R Shawn Johnson isn't just in the business of fitness; he's also in the business of community care. In the past nine years, Orangetheory Fitness Parker members have raised more than a quarter million dollars for local and national charities. “Recently we helped a local community member get a new athletic prosthetic leg,” Shawn shares. “[Our] members thought they were just going to get one, but I put them together with a non-profit called Move for Jen, where we donated the money to her organization, and we were able to provide six total prosthetic legs to people in need." Shawn continues, "Our members came together to support a local mom that has a child that is non-verbal, non-motive. We were able to buy them an adaptive bicycle that he's been able to enjoy since then.” Orangetheory Fitness has also helped their local schools with treadmills, offered support at the children’s hospital, and fundraised for national campaigns like Augie's Quest. Finding the right causes can sometimes be a challenge, but Shawn says he first looks to his members to see who can use help. “Take care of your own— your neighbors,” he shares, “and watch the ripple effect in your community. LATICIA LEWIS & FAMILY OWNERS OF TNT PIZZA AND WINGS Laticia Lewis and her children Terrell, Naynay, and Tyrese—the TNT in TNT Pizza and Wings (although Terrell and Tyrese argue whose T is first)— are not just entrepreneurs; they are dedicated Parker community builders on a mission. And (fun fact!) they own the first black-owned pizza shop in the state of Colorado. Laticia and her children share a commitment to giving back to the Parker community. At a time where quiet luxury is the key to comfort, Molly Coyne, the owner and founder of MC Design Interiors knows how to make a room feel approachable, organic and refined while holding true to complete livability. If you’re getting ready to host gatherings for the holidays, MC Design Interiors has recommendations to create a welcoming and organic environment for your guests. Their trusted team approaches design with intentionality as well as effortless refinement. They have an eye for casual elegance and a heart for hosting and connection. A mom first and designer second, Molly has always had a passion for interior design. With a background in commercial construction, she knows what goes into a project. Her passion for interior design is found in the language of both expression and functionality. Different designs can evoke unique emotions and influence how you function on a daily basis. “Molly really does take time to learn about her clients and learn about their lifestyle,” Kim O’Donnell, the marketing manager at MC Design Interiors says. When hosting, Molly finds it important to create a space that is welcoming, intentional and organic. While referring to leveling up a room, Molly thinks of paint first. “Paint really sets the tone within a space. A new paint job can work wonders in making a space feel brighter and more open and welcoming.” Molly refers to a wall they painted in a dining room that was used quite often for hosting. Originally the wall was

accented black. Molly wanted them to embrace that feeling while infusing natural elements to the space. They used a lime wash that brought a chalky depth and warmth to the gathering room. They also used a light fixture made of real shells and different textures of wood throughout to play with natural tones and texture. For the advantage of working with what you have, she suggests mixing and matching woods. She states, “you don’t have to overthink it. Mixing and matching all types of metals and woods can oftentimes be what brings it all together.” Use what you have and approachability will come naturally. Approachability is key to hosting. Molly comes from the San Francisco Bay area, and she finds an approachability to a room when greenery, faux or real flowers, pompous grasses, eucalyptus and even bay leaves are added. “Coming from California and having been outside so much I realized that there’s such a mental transformation that can happen from incorporating more nature into your life. I think that has really bled into my interior design style,” she shares. The key to these natural elements is to combine them with pottery and stoneware. “It’s really big right now, putting branches that look like you cut them out of a tree into a big earthenware pot,” Molly emphasizes. Molly and her team enjoy creating spaces for people that feel like it was curated just for them. Having an understated approach with color and bold clarity to combine all sorts of tones, natural elements and textures create a casual elegance in any room. When hosting it’s important to be intentional and create space for organic interactions. Set up areas so that people can interact easily with one another. Make sure chairs are facing the sofa or have swivel stools around your kitchen island so that people can easily turn and talk to each other. Consider traffic flow so that it’s easy to get from one room to the next, from indoors to outdoors, etc. It’s about both design and functionality.

DIRECTIONS Melt butter in a skillet. Place bread slices in the pan. Spread cranberry aioli and top with brie cheese. Layer turkey, apple and greens and grill until bread is slightly browned and cheese is melted.

2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 1 ½ cup oat milk 1½ teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground ginger 3 large eggs 2 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup sweet potato mash or leftover casserole • Butter and syrup for serving

In a large batter bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, spices, sugar and salt. Set aside. In a blender, add milk, eggs, vanilla extract, melted butter and sweet potatoes. Then blend until smooth. Add wet ingredients to the dry and mix well. Let the batter rest for about 5-6 minutes. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and grease the pan. Savory Bread Pudding INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • •

6 cups diced dinner rolls 2 cups of milk 2 cups of heavy whipping cream ½ cup turkey stock 1 tablespoon salt 2 teaspoons black pepper ¼ cup finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, etc.) 8 eggs 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese 2 cups diced turkey or ham 1 diced yellow onion 3 cloves minced garlic

DIRECTIONS In a large skillet, sauté onion over medium-high heat until the onion is slightly translucent. Add garlic and herbs, cooking just until fragrant. Turn off the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, milk, stock, salt and pepper. Add in sauteed onion, garlic, and herbs. Fold in the bread and stir until the cubes are thoroughly moistened. Let stand for 1 hour or cover tightly and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a large rectangular baking dish with unsalted butter. Fold the gruyere cheese and diced meat into the bread. Transfer the bread pudding to the greased baking dish, cover loosely with parchment paper and foil on top of the parchment (to keep the pudding from sticking to the foil). Bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 20 minutes, until the top is slightly golden brown and crusty, springing back when touched. Serve warm with gravy.

Topping • 1/4 cup brown sugar • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon butter • 3 tablespoons quick oats

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Fill the muffin pan with paper liners. In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, spices, baking soda and salt. Combine eggs, pumpkin and oil; stir into dry ingredients just until incorporated. Fold in dried cranberries. Fill each of the paper-lined cups ¾ full. For the topping, combine sugar, flour, oats and cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; sprinkle 1 teaspoon over each muffin. Bake muffins on the middle rack of the oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the muffin comes out clean.

Color the clothespin brown. Create the feathers by using feathers, pipe cleaners or leaves. If you choose pipe cleaners twist and wrap them into feather shapes making sure they’re looped around one another. Make sure the feathers, pipe cleaners or leaves meet at a central spot to attach the clothespin to.

Attach your feathers with the clothespin to the top of the body. Make the feet by bending a pipe cleaner in the middle. Then bend each end into toes by pressing half-inch pieces together. Glue the pipe cleaner to the inside of the cardboard.
