August - Kids and Pets Issue As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. This month, we look at the importance of passing on traditions to our children. Our community is made up of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and passing on those customs to our families strengthens a sense of belonging and pride. Within this issue, we are honored to be able to share a tribute to Loren Harris, featured on our cover. Right before we were going to talk to Loren and her mom, Regina, Loren died in an automobile accident. So many people knew and loved Loren, and when our community loses a young person, it shakes us to our core. Please join us and the Lifestyle family in sending love and prayers to Loren's family. The reminder that life is fleeting reinforces the importance of creating memories through tradition. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time making those memories with the ones you love.

A quick 15-minute drive from downtown Parker is where you will find the aptly named Prairie Hill Flower Company at the top of a hill overlooking the beautiful Douglas County countryside with a view of the Rocky Mountains. Owner, Lisa Frahm, started Prairie Hill Flower Company in the spring of 2020 and is the only florist in the Denver metro area that grows its own flowers. “We get comments all the time about how long our flowers last,” Lisa says. “We cut them one day and they are out the door the next day.” Lisa’s background is in architecture, but she always wanted to be a florist and to do something that could incorporate being with her kids, Morgan (age 9) and Mason (age 6). Her mom ran a landscaping business and her grandfather was a farmer in Nebraska. Her grandfather used to visit her in Colorado every mother’s day and make her go outside to plant her garden. “You could say this business is in my blood,” laughs Lisa. Lisa’s passion for flowers is obvious as we walk through the brightly colored rows and she talks through the growing process. Prairie Hill uses a seed starting method called soil blocking, where up to 20 starter plants are grown in 4”x4” squares of soil under lights in Lisa’s basement prior to being transplanted outside. The farm uses all sustainable practices, with no pesticides or chemicals to ensure that our pollinator friends are safe and healthy. The resident goats eat the remains of spent flower beds and chickens keep the pests at bay. The goat and chicken waste is then composted and that compost is used to feed the new flowers, creating a closed-loop cycle!
Prairie Hill, a member of the American Society for Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG), is gearing up for agritourism on a small scale. “There is a resurgence of people wanting to know how to garden,” Lisa says. People were so tired and lonely during the pandemic. Post COVID, people want to come out and be part of a community. “Flowers connect with people where they are every day and I love sharing that with others.” The farm creates space for just that and continues to grow new opportunities to share with the community. Lisa and her husband are in the process of completing their barn, which will serve as a flower studio and have an indoor/outdoor event space for flower arranging classes as well as bridal and baby showers. In the meantime, Lisa hosts events on the porch of her home, looking out over the garden and rolling hills. She currently has You-Pick flower events at the end of each month through October where you can learn about the flowers that are in season, cut your own flowers, arrange them, and take them home to enjoy. Prairie Hill Flower Co. is a full-service floral company, delivering flower arrangements to Parker and the surrounding areas. Lisa is also booking weddings through 2023. She works with brides to curate and grow flowers to match their wedding color palette and then creates beautiful arrangements for the big day. Loren, facing west, and sending blessings to her ancestors, family, friends and everyone that had been an influence in her life.
Three Parker families keep the sense of family alive by sharing traditions that create a strong family bond. Family traditions can be rooted in culture or religion or can be just for fun. Sharing culture and beliefs with children helps create a feeling of identity, belonging and pride. Traditions can be traced back for generations or be new. Either way, kids can look forward to daily, seasonal, or annual rituals that they can pass on to future generations too. Alex Yakubovich, co-founder of Be the Good Ones, is humble when he talks about giving back to his community. Alex’s family is from Kiev, Ukraine, and they immigrated to America when he was nine years old. Just like his parents, a beautician and a barber, he grew up with a small village mentality. “Everyone comes together to help,” Alex says. “I want to help people because it is the right thing to do.” He and his family donate to various causes and giving is important to his four children too. Alex and his wife, Ann, have a blended family. Alex is Jewish and Ann is Catholic. “My wife brings faith into our family,” Alex explains. They support each other even though their religions are very different. Audrey, Alex’s 17-year-old daughter, was on her Israeli Study Tour (IST) in July, which is a Bible tour and rite of passage for Jewish teenagers. Audrey took Ann’s Rosary with her and went out of her way to visit Christian holy sites. “She was celebrating both the Jewish and Christian faiths on her trip,” Alex says. Shraddha and Pritesh Patel live in Parker with their two sons, Druv, which means “brightest star in the sky,” and Niyam, which means “discipline.” “We wait until a baby is born to decide on a name,” Shraddha explains. “We get three letters based on the stars the day the baby is born and then choose the name.” The couple’s goal is to raise the boys with a good balance between Indian and American cultures. Shraddha moved to the United States when she got married and was 26 years old. Pritesh grew up in the United States. They are excited to take their boys to India in December so they have a sense of the country. “We want to show them the palaces, traditional dress and spiritual aspects of their heritage,” Shraddha says.

“It is important to pass down traditions and for them to see where their grandfather and great grandfather came from.” The boys are learning about their Hindu religion and the family prays together before breakfast in the temple room in their home. Dialects and traditional food both vary by the different states in India. Shraddha started cooking when she got married and makes traditional Indian food three to four days per week. Samosas are popular across state boundaries. A flour dough is rolled out and stuffing includes potatoes, peas and spices. Samosas are served with different chutneys. Loren Harris was learning all she could about her indigenous culture. “Loren embraced her Native American heritage,”
her mom, Regina Harris says. “She was so intrigued and so proud.” Loren’s life ended suddenly on June 30th. She had just turned 18 on June 3rd. Loren was Navajo, Lakota Sioux and Caucasian. She was registered with the Navajo Nation. Regina and Loren’s dad, Wovoka Begaye, weren’t raised traditionally. “I am learning also,” Regina explains. “It is important to keep our story alive.” Tanya and William, Loren’s sister and brother, both lived on the reservation in New Mexico. “I would see my grandmother practice our traditions,” Tanya says, “and that’s what made me practice our culture and hand it down. For me to teach Loren what I know was an honor.” The indigenous regalia that Loren wore in some of her senior photos means
everything to Regina. Each piece of her outfit has a significant meaning. The squash blossom represents knowledge, the earrings protect the ears from negative talk, and turquoise is sacred and is a protector – it represents renewal and good fortune. The type of moccasins on Loren’s feet are only worn by females. The soles represent Father Sky and the tops, Mother Earth. The wraps signify rainbows and sunbeams. The rug dress, which is usually woven, represents the universe. The eagle feathers in the fan symbolize bravery and strength. Loren showed me the equilibrium between cultures,” Willam says. “I shared an unwavering patriotism with my sister. We were very proud of the Navajo tradition and the Christian tradition – we always shared that love.”

LOREN HARRIS TRIBUTE Loren’s family would like to thank the Parker community, her friends and teachers at Legend High School, her work family at Chicken Shack, Crossroads Community Church and the Navy recruiting office in Parker. They would also like to thank Jolie Rodriguez for capturing Loren’s spirit and pride of her heritage during her senior photo session last year. “Loren was kindhearted, thoughtful, caring, generous, silly and a jokester. She was strong-willed and won the ‘most sarcastic’ award,” Regina, her mom, reminisces. She grew up loving football and her family says she was the No. 1 Broncos fan. Loren was thrilled when she met Tim Tebow a couple of times. Loren played club volleyball since she was 12 years old and had hoped to get a scholarship. During the COVID pandemic, she lost all passion for the game. “Let’s think of Plan B,” Regina says she suggested. “She gradually talked to us about joining the military and pursuing her education.” Loren was scheduled to leave for Navy training in Illinois on July 7th. “I had shared the story of the Navajo Code Talkers with her. Loren wanted to serve her country and she didn’t want anyone to mess with her family. She was a protector, and was ready to go into warrior mode,” Tanya, her sister, tells us. “She learned it from the great deep roots of her indigenous heritage.”

August marks the beginning of the school year, but there’s still time for at least one more day of family fun. We’ve planned out the ultimate day in the city in hopes that you would get inspired to get out there and make some memories.
1. LITTLE MAN ICE C R E A M C O M PA N Y PRICE RANGE: $2.50 (Little Dip) - $6.50 (A Large) Nothing tops off a perfect family day like a scoop of ice cream! Luckily, Denver’s premier place to get a sweet treat, Little Man Ice Cream, is less than ten minutes from Coors Field. It’s hard to miss—the shop is housed in a 28-foot steel replica of an old-fashioned milk can. There’s something for everybody, from sundaes and milkshakes to handmade waffle cones and ice cream sandwiches. They always have vegan flavors and sorbets available, too. Prepare yourself for a long line—potentially 30 minutes or so—and treat yourself to an extra scoop or rainbow sprinkles for your patience. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science backs up to City Park, Denver’s most popular park, which boasts over 320 lush green acres. It contains tennis courts, horseshoes, two playgrounds, picnic sites, and baseball, football, and soccer fields. Electric scooters and bicycles can be rented for a minimal fee, so the whole family can zoom around the park’s perimeter. Bring a ball, pack some backyard games, and hang out for a while. If you’re feeling really ambitious, the Denver Zoo is within the park’s limits (note that it has additional admission.) Here are a few other Denver free parks you should put on your list to explore this summer: Washington Park, Cheesman Park, Confluence Park, and Central Park.
3. DINNER PRICE RANGE: Dependent on Restaurant There are several places to grab a delicious bite to eat near City Park. Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs presents a kid-friendly option for grub-on-the-go. They sell reasonably-priced hotdogs and burgers. Olive & Finch offers juice blends and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread, and Dos Santos has modern Mexican cuisine with a creative twist on tacos. As for us, pizza was the move. We drove to Blue Pan Pizza, home of the Detroit-style pie Westword Magazine voted best pizza in Denver in 2021. If you go, look closely at the menu. A few pizzas have blue ribbons by their names, meaning that they won first place in International Pizza challenges. The pictured pizza[be1] , The Brooklyn Bridge, is one such winner. It is layered with signature marinara sauce, mozzarella and brick cheese, cupping pepperoni, ricotta, hand-pinched Italian sausage, fresh garlic, Sicilian oregano, and pecorino Romano cheese. 4. ROCKIES GAME PRICE RANGE: Starting at $4 per person Nothing says summer in Denver like an evening of baseball at Coors Field. The stadium is quintessentially Colorado, with great views of the Rocky Mountains and the highest elevation of any field in the MLB. The Rockies play approximately 80 games at home from April to early October, so there are plenty of opportunities to take your family out to the ballgame! Kids 15 and younger can join the Rockies Rookies fan club to receive free merchandise and gear. Nine innings can be a long time to sit still--especially for kiddos. Dinger’s Playground provides an opportunity for younger kids to expel some energy. In addition, the Coors Field Interactive Area for kids is located behind the bullpen. If you aren’t picky about your seats, you can reserve tickets in the Rockpile, 2,300seat bleacher section located behind the centerfield backdrop. These $4 tickets ($1 for seniors) are available on a first come, first serve basis up to two hours before the game. They can only be purchased at the designated window next to gate A, and once you purchase Rockpile tickets, you cannot leave and reenter the stadium. Kids under the age of two don’t need a ticket if you’re willing to have them sit on your lap.

MUST SEE MUSEUMS PRICE RANGE: $13.95-$19.95 per person* There are many kid-friendly museums to check out in Denver, including but not limited to the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Children’s Museum of Denver, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We opted for the latter, and it did not disappoint! You’ll want to carve out at least 2-3 hours, a modest time commitment for a three-story museum that transports you from the dinosaur age to modern space travel. The Denver Museum of Art and Science is constantly rotating exhibitions, so there’s always something new to see. During August, you can check out Egypt: Time of the Pharaohs and Mazes and Brain Games. Kids will be amazed by replicas of mummies and pyramids, and then they can expend their energy with dozens of puzzles and interactive games. Year-round, families can venture on a prehistoric journey, check out hundreds of sparkling gems and minerals, explore north American Indian cultures, and more. All in all, a museum is a great way to get your kids’ imaginations running and ready for another successful school year. *Pro-Tip: Douglas County Libraries offers free passes to Denver museums and attractions through their Adventure Pass. SWIRLS FROZEN YOGURT Swirls Frozen Yogurt is the ideal place to cool off with a treat after strolling down Main Street. And if you are on a walk, the chances that you have your dog with you are high! Luckily, Swirls has a number of dog-friendly flavors for two dollars (plus tax) in their freezer. They get their supply from Yöghund, a company that creates healthy probiotic treats for dogs.
