Making exercise fun again WORKING OUT CAN GET BORING. No matter how killer the music is that’s playing in your headphones... and despite the 16 TVs you’re watching at once while thumping out another 30-minute treadmill session, the reward is often found in the thrill of being done. Not anymore. As the Lifestyle team explored top fitness trends for this month’s “Active” issue, we found that traditional group fitness classes have been replaced by carefully designed ecosystems pulsing with energy, connection and positive reinforcement. From Burn Boot Camp and Pure Barre to Koko Fit Club and Farrell’s Extreme Body Shaping, the group dynamic reigns supreme. Just get yourself there, and fall in to the groove. And if getting to your workout is your big challenge, here’s a tip: the most consistent exercisers, according to a recent study in the journal Health Psychology, are those who are triggered by a daily cue. Something as habitual and mundane as hearing your morning alarm clock can get you to the gym and through your workout before you even have time to think about it.

you’re housebound. Use your own body weight, or grab items around the house for added intensity—cans of beans for hand weights, and a stair or a bench as a riser. THE MOVES 1. THRUSTERS Use just your own body weight, or grab a barbell, dumbbells or a few cans from the pantry. Each repetition begins with a full squat and ends with arms, legs and hips fully locked out. 2. BOX JUMPS Find a solid surface anywhere between 1020 inches tall, or even a stair case. Repetition can be done by: (1) stepping up and down on the surface; or (2) performing a two-footed jump, either stepping or jumping down. If stepping up, be sure to alternate which leg leads the movement. 3. PUSHUPS Repetitions can be done in a full plank position, from the knees, or even at an angle against the kitchen counter. The chest touches the ground on each movement and arms lock out at the top. WORKOUT FLOW: 3 Thrusters, 3 Box Jumps, 3 Pushups, 6 Thrusters, 6 Box Jumps, 6 pushups, 9 Thrusters... your outdoor experience to a higher level, and expert trail tips for the Front Range —where trail choices are abundant— can’t go wrong.
Small but mighty, this little guide from a seasoned trail runner is stuffed with great information on everything you can think of, including safety hazards, gear for all terrains and climates, sports nutrition, animals that may want to eat you, fitness conditioning, trail etiquette and more. It’s pragmatic, funny and informative. ++ CONTEMPLATIVE HIKING ALONG THE COLORADO FRONT RANGE: DISCOVERING YOUR SOUL AND RECONNECTING TO NATURE ON HIKING TRAILS FROM DENVER TO FT. COLLINS, COLORADO BY MARGARET EMERSON This fun book blends the practicality of a hiking guide with the practice of mindful meditation through a series of exercises that helps readers forge a deeper connection to their environment. Emerson keeps a blog at ContemplativeHiking.com and holds a master’s in ecopsychology: the study of the relationship between humans and the natural environment, and the healing power of our connection to nature. ++ EVERY BODY YOGA: LET GO OF FEAR, GET ON THE MAT, LOVE YOUR BODY BY JESSAMYN STANLEY We often think we have to be the "right" size before starting fitness activities, especially activities that require wearing spandex in a room full of people. Stanley tackles this self-punishing and depriving perspective in her memoir/guidebook on yoga. A funny, blunt and candid writer, she digs right in to working past self-consciousness.

FARRELL’S EXTREME BODY SHAPING “We use the word results a lot,” says Farrell’s Extreme Body Shaping owner, Chad Davis, with both enthusiasm and pride. He describes their usual client as being between 35 and 55 years old and frustrated with other “typical” approaches to fitness. “They’ve tried everything else—every other diet, regular gym memberships, they’ve paid for personal trainers, and haven’t seen a lot of success,” Davis says. He’s seen clients—some are even former NFL players—transform their bodies and their minds while attending the 45-minute sessions six days a week. It starts with a 10-week-challenge. “We measure results, chest, arms, weight and body composition.” There are four components that, combined, get those results that are putting Farrell’s on the map. ++ Cardio-kick boxing. ++ Building dynamic strength and lean muscle mass. ++ A complete nutrition package. “It’s not a starvation program by any device,” Davis says. “You have to eat correctly, fuel the body correctly.” ++ Accountability though teams and coaches throughout the process. The couple have taken to heart the five-pillars of the Burn Boot Camp franchise, which are: Mindset, Nutrition, HIIT (high-intensity interval training), Strength-building and Community. Nearly two years ago, Becky tried Burn Boot Camp for the first time. “She loved it and never got tired of it,” Carmen says. “She also became mentally and emotionally stronger—and we wanted to bring that to more people.” Ergo, the Ragatzes opened a Burn Boot Camp in Parker. Carmen says they see a range of clients walk in to their gym, from experienced athletes to sedentary people looking to find their verve again.

IMPACT & INNOVATION PROJECT CU.R.E. STRENGTHENS HEALTHCARE FOR PATIENTS & EMPOWERS MEDICAL PERSONNEL IN UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD
delivering HEALTH & HOPE to the world
C.U.R.E. CARGO Project C.U.R.E.’s Cargo program delivers semi-trailer sized cargo containers carrying medical supplies & equipment donations to under-resourced hospitals, clinics and community health centers in developing countries. PROC.U.R.E.
C.U.R.E. CLINICS & VOLUNTEERS
Working with hospitals and medical manufacturers nationwide, Project C.U.R.E. collects life-saving equipment and supplies through our ProC.U.R.E. program.
At the heart of Project C.U.R.E. are our volunteers! Volunteers represent many backgrounds, including nurses, doctors, students, young professionals and retirees, among many others. These volunteers sort and pack, provide administrative support, and can travel with us on our regular C.U.R.E. Clinics trips. Our Clinics trips need medical professionals, including physicians, OB/GYNs, pediatricians, surgeons and nurses.
Donations from hospitals provide environmentally friendly ways to redirect surplus or retired products. IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD, THE SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT EMPOWER HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS & ELEVATE THE LEVEL AND QUALITY CARE FOR THEIR PATIENTS.
LAST YEAR, 62 MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS PROVIDED FREE CARE FOR MORE THAN 10,000 PATIENTS & TRAINED 154 NURSES.
