Lifestyle Letter
Hello, Spring
A
nd goodbye to the winter that practically wasn’t! April weather in Colorado can be unpredictable, but it finally feels safe to put away those winter clothes and start making plans for road trips, outdoor dining and strolling in beautiful downtown Parker, which, by the way, is getting more awesome every day. This month, we talked with Twenty Mile Central’s co-owner Shelli Mango about the cool mix of businesses that’s helping turn Mainstreet into a beehive of activity in “Parker’s Sense of Place” (p. 20). Next, we test-drove some fresh “Derby Day” cocktail recipes from the master mixologists at Parker Garage (p. 14). (Psst.. be sure to mark your calendar for THE event of the spring season, the Parker Garage Annual Derby Viewing Party on May 6th.)

20 MILE CENTRAL PARKER’S SENSE OF PLACE
ARTICLE ROBIN BOND | PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN OTT
W
hile Main Streets across America strive to create a unique downtown experience that draws patrons out of the suburbs
and beyond, it seems that downtown Parker has had that from the start. And nowhere is that "je ne sais quoi" more evident than at 20 Mile Central – the three commercial buildings on Mainstreet that extend from Vines Wine Bar down to Las Delicias Restaurant. Named “20 Mile” in 1864 for the train stop’s proximity to Denver, 20 Mile Central today is a destination in its own rite, a bustling com-
mercial space filled with businesses that represent both the heritage of the community and the businesses of the future. Purchased in 2014 by Shelli and Tony Mango and a handful of investment partners, 20 Mile Central is a place where sole proprietorships both old and new are thriving. The common thread: locally owned. “We don’t have Starbucks, we have Fika. We don’t have Walmart, we have Mainstreet General Store. We don’t have Kay’s Jewelers, we have Victoria Marie,” says owner, Shelli Mango. In addition to the coffee house, general store and jeweler, current retailers at 20 Mile include an art and framing shop, a wine bar & bistro, a flower shop, a hair salon, a women’s clothing boutique, decorative home décor and a Mexican restaurant. Service offerings range from travel services, insurance agencies, mortgage companies, and CPAs to attorneys, family therapists, staffing services and financial planners. “Our goal is to make the 20 Mile Central buildings brighter, more visually appealing and pedestrian friendly,” says Mango. Those improvements include the all-new LED lighting that’s been installed throughout the exterior of the buildings, improved sidewalks, and new gutters that have helped with ice and drainage. “We’ve also added a new pedestrian sidewalk that connects the Parker Station parking lot to ours,” says Mango, who adds that the Town of Parker has begun placing “way-finding” signs around town – guiding pedestrians, bikers and drivers to key destinations. When asked about the types of new businesses she sees coming in to Downtown Parker 20 Mile? It’s all about adding value to the already robust beehive of commerce, says Mango. “We would love to see a spice shop, a shoe store, a men’s clothing store, a toy store, a deli, a pet store perhaps. “And in the spirit of what we already have – all locally owned, of course.” CONTINUED >
