HOW WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR ARTS AND CULTURE?
Andy Manz | Amanz@LifestylePubs.com
Welcome to February in Parker, a month of love, romance and the arts! While your special someone might be the same ever year, the thriving Arts & Culture scene in Parker is definitely “mixing it up.” The Lifestyle team had so much fun exploring the thriving cultural scene in Parker, and we were struck by the shear diversity of offerings right here in town. From “Shall We Dance?” (pg. 34), our roundup of the best places to kick up your heels in and around the burbs (country, salsa, disco anyone?), to the PACE Center’s innovative stylings that are satisfying both new and old patrons of the arts (“Making Moves,” pg.26), we learned that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to creative tastes and offerings right here in Parker. And while you’re sweeping your sweetie off his or her feet, don’t forget the gifts! Check out our feature story South Suburban Artists Collective (pg.18). Here's to an inspiring and romantic February!

EXPERT TIPS FOR RUNNERS FROM THE COLORADO ATHLETIC CLUB ARTICLE JODI HORNER
RUNNERS ARE NOT BORN, THEY ARE MADE. So says Mona Kobishop, a certified master personal trainer who facilitates the Colorado Athletic Run Club in the Denver Tech Center. As a professional running coach with the Colorado Athletic Club, Kobishop helps her clients—from novice to advanced—approach the sport intentionally to pave the way for optimal performance and avoid injury. Here are five important tips from the running expert, for runners across the board:

n honor of interviewing a calligrapher, I decided to whip out a pen and draft Hannah Howard’s story by hand. Of course, it’s (much) faster to draft on a laptop, but after talking with Howard about her lifelong passion for handwriting and fonts, it sparked an interest to appreciate an overlooked art form: written language. “I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing,” says Howard when referring to her relatively new business Ink + Root. Howard, a self-taught, left-handed calligrapher, started Ink + Root in March of 2016 after moving a mile high. The Louisiana native formerly worked as a creative direc-

With newcomer confidence (while ignoring self-doubt) Howard sent out networking emails to the local wedding scene to share her nontraditional, organic calligraphy style. Many meetings later, she connected with a network that encouraged her to start her own business.
Howard also teaches introduction to modern calligraphy workshops. As you’d expect, they’ve been a hit. During the workshops, “everyone is on the same page, learning something new,” says Howard. If you’re interested in discovering your style of calligraphy,

SOSU South Suburban Artists Collective ARTICLE JENNIFER STARBUCK | PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO

t’s a cold early January morning in the Centennial home of sculptor Stephanie Wilson Thomas. She’s filling coffee cups for her artist friends as they gather in her warm kitchen, scribbling down their plans for the coming year. The
women, some of whom have known each other for more than 20 years, are laughing, making jokes, but they are serious about their mission here: To bring art to the communities south of Denver. They call themselves the South Suburban Artists Collective, or SOSU for short. The group started about two years ago when some friends —and then friends of friends — in Centennial began talking about the need for art community south of the the big city, where the major art museums, galleries and art collectives reside. “It’s amazing how much this area is growing, and how fast. Any community benefits from art,” says Thomas, who herself moved to Centennial five years ago from Galveston, Texas. “I want to live in a place where art is important.” Most of the SOSU artists are current or former elementary and middle school art teachers, which is how their friendships began, and have collaborated on exhibitions, sales and workshops over the years. For the past two Christmas seasons, SOSU has leased short-term retail locations for pop-up sales, as well as hosted sales and workshops in various members’ homes. But their end goal is to create something similar to the Art Students League of Denver, located near downtown, where all of them have spent time taking classes and collaborating with other artists to hone their skills.

enver’s own alternative hip-hop group THE FLOBOTS have been making music together since 2000. After releasing their first major-label album Fight with Tools in 2007, the hit single “Handlebars” pushed them into the national music spotlight. Since then, they’ve completed two other albums and are now in the middle of producing a third, titled NOENEMIES.
Both a social movement and an album, NOENEMIES aims to give musical voice
to today’s social movements in a way that is not divisive, but instead humanizing and accepting. Since production on NOENEMIES began, the Flobots have led workshops to protest the rise of RTD fares, advocate for a $15 minimum wage and bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement. Coming to The PACE Center in April, the band’s musical social movement will involve, well, movement. American dance company Wonderbound, long known for bringing dance to underserved communities including the elderly,

The Flobots-Wonderbound collaboration “Divisions” runs April 14-April 30 at the PACE Center and will explore topics ranging from identity struggles in society to the roles dance and music have played in past social movements. With the collaboration of the Flobots and Wonderbound, two groups who are “walking the walk” in both their approach and ideals, this performance is one not to be missed.
